Abstract:The (Ca1–2xNaxLax)TiO3 (0⩽x⩽0.5) A-site substituted perovskite compounds have been synthesized and characterized by XRD and Raman spectroscopy at room temperature. The XRD powder diffraction study suggests that the end-member Na1/2La1/2TiO3 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4/mcm. The phase transition from Pbnm to I4/mcm is located between x=0.34 and 0.39 and is driven by the variation of ionic radii at the A-site. The observed Raman modes are in agreement with group theory analysis, and the relationships between the behavior of structural parameters (e.g. Ti–O–Ti bond angle), indicated by long-range order, and the corresponding Raman frequency shifts and intensity evolution, indicated by short-range order, are established and discussed in terms of the radius effect and the mass effect.

Abstract:Na(Nb1-xTax)O-3 binary solid-solution ceramics with high quality were fabricated by conventional solid-state sintering routes for improving the electric(E)-field-induced irreversible polarization and transition behaviors of NaNbO3. The studied results confirm that this binary solid-solution ceramics exhibit orthorhombic Pbcm space group companying with reduced unit-cell volume at x <= 0.4, and orthorhombic Pbnm space group at x = 0.5. As the Ta5+ content increases in the binary solid-solutions, the E-field-induced irreversible antiferroelectric -> ferroelectric (AFE -> FE) transition becomes reversible at x >= 0.2, giving rise to double-polarization hysteresis; the key E-fields triggering both irreversible and reversible transitions (E-F) increase in general. In particular, the E-field-induced FE phase at x = 0.15 is unstable upon unloading E-field to zero, which can return to AFE phase with time lapse. At x = 0.5, the Curie temperature (T-C) of AFE shifts to below room temperature, but E-field-induced reversible transition is still observed, which results in a nonlinear polarization with the lowest hysteresis and contributes to the largest energy-storage density. This transition is not due to the AFE <-> FE transition but rather to the order <-> disorder behavior of polar clusters or/and nanoregions within nonpolar Pbnm structure matrix.

Abstract:La1-xSrxFeO3-delta (x = 0.3, 0.4, 0.5) materials were investigated by in situ high-temperature X-ray diffraction in pure O-2 and N-2. A rhombohedral symmetry was found at ambient temperature for the perovskite materials in agreement with previous reports. The rhombohedral distortion of the perovskite structure (space group R (3) over barc) from the cubic prototype decreased with increasing temperature, and the materials became cubic perovskites (Pm (3) over barm) at elevated temperatures. The cubic to rhombohedral phase transition temperature decreased with increasing Sr-substitution level and with decreasing partial pressure of oxygen. The thermal expansion of the materials below the phase transition was strongly aniantropic. The two order parameters of the phase transition, the antiferrodistortive tilting and compression of the FeO6/2 octahedra, were determined by Rietveld refinement of die diffraction patterns. A large chemical expansion of the materials because of thermal reduction of the oxidation state of Fe was observed. The chemical expansion was strongly anisotropic below the rhombohedral to cubic phase transition temperature and strongly nonlinear with respect to the oxygen non-stoichiometry. The microscopic origin of the anisotropic nature of the chemical expansion is discussed as well as the nonlinear dependence of chemical expansion with respect to the concentration of oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:Substitutions of the zirconium and tin ions along with the indium-niobium and iron-niobium complexes for titanium in the barium modified NBT solid solutions impact the formation of phases in the process of the solid state synthesis and the relative stability of the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric phases. We showed that the synthesis of solid solutions is a multi-step process during which a number of intermediate phases (depending on the solid solution composition and the annealing temperature) are formed. The sintering temperature to 1000 - 1100 C allows to obtain single phase solid solutions. The increase of the substituting ion content results in a linear variation in the lattice unit cell size. At the same time it leads to a change in the relative stability of the antiferroelectric and ferroelectric phases according to the variation of the tolerance factor. Substitutions by ions with a radius larger than the radius of the initial ion leads to a decrease of the ferroelectric-antiferroelectric phase transition temperature while the smaller ion substitutions produce the opposite effect.

Abstract:The crystal structures of Ca0.6Sr0.4TiO3 and Ca0.8Sr0.2TiO3 perovskites have been studied at high temperatures by X-ray powder diffraction. The most likely sequence of phase transitions with increasing temperature in Ca0.6Sr0.4TiO3 is the same as that shown by the system CaTiO3-SrTiO3 with increasing Sr content at room temperature. This sequence is: orthorhombic Pbnm, orthorhombic Bmmb, tetragonal I4/mcm and cubic Pm3m. The second orthorhombic phase could not be determined in Ca0.8Sr0.2TiO3, either due to the poorer resolution of the diffractometer employed or because the Bmmb phase might not have a stability field at this composition. The transition temperatures decrease on going from Ca0.8Sr0.2TiO3 to Ca0.6Sr0.4TiO3. Calorimetric measurements on 12 samples spanning the system CaTiO3-SrTiO3 then allow one to draw, in combination with the RT XRD data, the temperature vs. composition phase diagram. Phase boundaries show a linear shift toward lower Sr content with the increase of temperature, implying a negligible plateau effect near the CaTiO3 composition, but quantum saturation occurs at low temperatures near the SrTiO3 composition.

Abstract:The structure of Bi4-xLaxTi3O12 (BLaTx) as a function of La content from x = 0.00 to 1.25 was studied by Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). It was observed that the Raman modes evolve discontinuously at about x = 1.00, which indicates a structural phase transition. Specifically, the B2g and B3g Raman modes shown evidences to coalesce into Eg modes with increasing La content. The evolution of Raman modes corresponds to the weakening of ferroelectric orthorhombic lattice distortion with increasing La substitution when x 1.00 and the final transition into the paraelectric tetragonal structure at higher La content. XRD and electrical measurement results confirm this phase transition by the observation that diffraction peaks from (200) and (020) planes of BLaT0.75 coalesce into one peak in BLaT1.25 and by the corresponding disappearance of remanent polarisation. The impact of La substitution on electrical properties of BLaTx is discussed briefly.

Abstract:The A-site mixed-ammonium solid solutions of metal-organic perovskites [(NH2 NH3 )x (CH3 NH3 )1-x ][Mn(HCOO)3 ] (x=1.00-0.67) exhibit para- to ferroelectric diffuse phase transitions with lowered transition temperatures from x=1.00 to 0.67. These properties are due to the decreased framework distortion and polarization in their low temperature ferroelectric phases caused by the increased CH3 NH3 (+) concentration.

Abstract:Single crystals of the systems Pr0.5(Ca1-xSrx)0.5MnO3, (Pr1-yYy)0.5(Ca1-xSrx)0.5MnO3, and Sm0.5Sr0.5MnO3 were grown to provide a series of samples with fixed ratio Mn(III)/Mn(IV)=1 having geometric tolerance factors that span the transition from localized to itinerant electronic behavior of the MnO3 array. A unique ferromagnetic phase appears at the critical tolerance factor tc= 0.975 that separates charge ordering and localized-electron behavior for t<tc from itinerant or molecular-orbital behavior for t>tc. This ferromagnetic phase, which has to be distinguished from the ferromagnetic metallic phase stabilized at tolerance factors t>tc, separates two distinguishable Type-CE antiferromagnetic phases that are metamagnetic. Measurements of the transport properties under hydrostatic pressure were carried out on a compositions t a little below tc in order to compare the effects of chemical vs. hydrostatic pressure on the phases that compete with one another near t=tc.

Abstract:Phase transition‐induced lamellar domain structures together with the phase transition process in Ca [( Mg 1/3 Ta 2/3)0.9 Ti 0.1] O 3 complex perovskite ceramics have been investigated by high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. As the orthorhombic and monoclinic structures coexist in the present ceramics and even in a single grain, groups of lamellar domains have been observed and analyzed in the three characteristic zone axes of the parent cubic perovskite structure: 〈100〉, 〈110〉, and 〈111〉. zone axes. The antiparallel displacement of A‐site cations, in‐phase, and antiphase oxygen octahedra tilting and B‐site 1:2 cation ordering cause superstructure reflections to destroy the symmetry of the parent cubic structure and subsequently induce domain structures. Groups of (010), (100) reflection twin domains and 90° rotation domains along the [100], [010], and [001] directions in the 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 zone axes are refined to be caused by the loss of reflection planes and fourfold rotation symmetry, whereas the loss of threefold rotoinversion and gain of twofold rotation symmetry lead to 120° and 180° rotation domains in the [111] zone axis. Rhombohedral m and tetragonal 4/mmm structures are revealed to act as the bridging intermediate phase to make the first‐order phase transitions from the parent cubic m m structure to the orthorhombic mmm structure and monoclinic 2/m structure without group‐subgroup relations continuous and diffusionless, and thus could occur via second order to form domain structures.
Powder X-ray study on perovskites in the system of Ca1-xSrxTiO3 (O ≤ x ≤ 1)

Abstract:The structures of perovskites in the system CaTiO3-SrTiO3 were measured and refined at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction. The sequence of phase transitions for Ca1-xSrxTiO3(0 ≤ x ≤ 1), found with increasing Sr content, is orthorhombic Pbnm, orthorhombic Bmmb, tetragonal I4/mcm and cubic Pm3m. The boundaries of phase transitions are at x = 0.45(5) for Pbnm-Bmmb, x = 0.65(5) for Bmmb-I4/mcm and x = 0.92(2) for Pm3m, respectively.

Abstract:High-quality (1 - x)(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3-xSrTiO(3) lead-free piezoelectric thin films (x = 0, 0.1, and 0.25) on Pt(111)/Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates were prepared by a sol-gel method. The microstructures of the thin films as a function of SrTiO3 doping level and temperature were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Their temperature-and frequency-dependent piezoelectric properties were studied on the nanoscale using switching spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy (SS-PFM). A rhombohedral ferroelectric to pseudocubic relaxor phase transition was observed when either ST content or temperature increased. The significant frequency dependence of both ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties was also disclosed by analyzing polarization hysteresis loops on the macroscopic scale and local switching dynamics at various frequencies. It was determined that the short-range order clusters came out through the long-range ferroelectric order, thus the nanoscale approaches are consistent with macroscopic data at elevated temperatures and various frequency ranges.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline (Pb0.95−xCa0.05Lax)Ti1−x/4O3 (PCLT) powders were prepared by the sol–gel technique. Doping-induced or grain size-induced structure phase transition was investigated by using Raman scattering and x-ray diffraction for the PCLT system. Experimental results show that the soft phonon mode E(TO1) displays a decrease in frequency but an increase in linewidth with increasing concentration of La. A discontinuous behavior of the phonon energy is associated with a phase transition from a ferroelectric tetragonal to a paraelectric cubic phase, and occurs at a morphotropic phase boundary of x≈0.30 for grain sizes being 20 nm. The dependence of Raman phonon modes on the size of particles has been analyzed for nanocrystalline (Pb0.88Ca0.04La0.08)Ti0.98O3 with grain sizes of 10–60 nm and a grain size-induced phase transition is observed for sizes below 14 nm.

Abstract:Multiferroic material has become an extremely popular because of its coupling of different orders and the potential application in multifunctional devices. Herein we successfully prepared xBaTiO(3)-(1-x)La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 solid solution via sol gel method and traditional sintering process. The solid solution is single phase with perovskite phase and its homogenous microstructure was proved via SEM. A colossal positive magnetoresistant behavior (8% between 150 K and 180 K) was observed, beside the traditional negative magnetoresistant in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 based materials.

Abstract:The series Ba1−xLaxTi1−xCrxO3 (0≤x≤1) was synthesized at 1400°C for about 60 h. Their structure was carefully analyzed by the use of powder X-ray diffraction and Rietveld analysis software GSAS (General Structure Analysis System). Four solid solutions are found in this series: tetragonal solid solution Ba1−xLaxTi1−xCrxO3 (0≤x≤0.029), cubic solid solution Ba1−xLaxTi1−xCrxO3 (0.0365≤x≤0.600), rhombohedral solid solution Ba1−xLaxTi1−xCrxO3 (0.700≤x≤0.873), and orthorhombic solid solution Ba1−xLaxTi1−xCrxO3 (0.956≤x≤1). There are corresponding two-phase regions between the adjacent two solid solutions. The detailed lattice parameters are presented. The relationship between the lattice parameters and the composition of the solid solutions is developed.

Abstract:Abstract (La, Nd)2/3TiO3 ceramics were prepared through a conventional solid state mixed oxide route. For phase and microstructure analysis, XRD and SEM were used, respectively. Microwave dielectric properties were measured using a network analyzer. XRD patterns revealed the formation of the parent (La, Nd)2/3TiO3 phase along with (La, Nd)4Ti9O24 as a secondary phase. The microstructure consisted of rectangular and needle shaped grains, which decreased in size from 4 μm to 2 μm with an increase in sintering temperature from 1300 °C to 1350 °C. Decrease in grain size caused an increase in density of the samples from 4.81 g/cm3 to 5.17 g/cm3. Microwave dielectric properties of the samples calcined and sintered in air atmosphere were εr = 40.35, Q × f = 3499 GHz and τf = 0 ppm/°C, whereas for a sample calcined in nitrogen and sintered in air they were εr = 40.18, Q × f = 4077 GHz and τf = +4.9 ppm/°C, respectively.

Abstract:SrTiO3 undergoes a cubic-to-tetragonal phase transition at 105 K. This antiferrodistortive transition is believed to be in competition with incipient ferroelectricity. Substituting strontium by isovalent calcium induces a ferroelectric order. Introducing mobile electrons to the system by chemical nonisovalent doping, on the other hand, leads to the emergence of a dilute metal with a superconducting ground state. The link between superconductivity and the other two instabilities is a question gathering momentum in the context of a popular paradigm linking unconventional superconductors and quantum critical points. We present a set of specific-heat, neutron-scattering, dielectric-permittivity, and polarization measurements on Sr1-x Ca-x TiO3 (0 < x < 0.009) and a study of low-temperature electric conductivity in Sr-0.9978 Ca-0.0022 TiO3-delta. Calcium substitution was found to enhance the transition temperature for both antiferrodistortive and ferroelectric transitions. Moreover, we find that Sr-0.9978 Ca-0.0022 TiO3-delta has a superconducting ground state. The critical temperature in this rare case of a superconductor with a ferroelectric parent is slightly lower than in SrTiO3-delta of comparable carrier concentration. A three-dimensional phase diagram for Sr1-x Ca-x TiO3-delta tracking the three transition temperatures as a function of x and delta results from this study, in which ferroelectric and superconducting ground states are not immediate neighbors.

Abstract:Perovskite-type cobaltates in the system La2Co1+z(MgxTi1−x)1−zO6 were studied for z=0≤x≤0.6 and 0≤x<0.9, using X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, electron diffraction (ED), magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy. The samples were synthesised using the citrate route in air at 1350°C. The space group symmetry of the structure changes from P21/n via Pbnm to R3¯c with both increasing Mg content and increasing Co content. The La2Co(MgxTi1−x)O6 (z=0) compounds show anti-ferromagnetic couplings of the magnetic moments for the Co below 15K for x=0, 0.1 and 0.2. XANES spectra show for the compositions 0≤x≤0.5 a linear decrease in the L3/(L3+L2) Co–L2,3 edge branching ratio with x, in agreement with a decrease of the average Co ion spin-state, from a high-spin to a lower-spin-state, with decreasing nominal Co2+ ion content.
