Abstract:Numerous investigations of the mechanical properties of the intermetallic compound NiAl were carried out in the past and subsequent research has identifled NiAl as an ordered intermetallic material which possesses low density and good oxidation resistance combined with a high yield strength [1»3] . For the composition dependence of its properties [3»5] , accurate composition control is signiflcant during the melting process. For ISM process, the skull formed in the melting process holds the liquid alloy and prevents the reaction between the crucible material and the alloy melt. At the same time, it avoids the contamination by the impurity elements, such as oxygen or nitrogen. However, in the ISM process, because of the high temperature of the melt and the high vacuum degree in the vacuum chamber, the evaporation loss of the volatile element may be very serious. Undoubtedly, the large quantity of evaporation loss might cause serious in∞uence on the strength and ductility of the as-cast alloy. The notable efiect of the real vapor pressure of the volatile element in a molten alloy on its evaporation loss has been noticed by some
