Abstract:In this report, zirconium(IV)- and hafnium(IV)-bishydroxamic acid complexes were utilized in the highly enantioselective epoxidation of homoallylic alcohols and bishomoallylic alcohols, which used to be quite difficult substrates for other types of asymmetric epoxidation reactions. The performance of the catalyst was improved by adding polar additive and molecular sieves. For homoallylic alcohols, the reaction could provide epoxy alcohols in up to 83% yield and up to 98% ee, while, for bishomoallylic alcohols, up to 79% yield and 99% ee of epoxy alcohols rather than cyclized tetrahydrofuran compounds could be obtained in most cases.

Abstract:Carbonyl ylide is one of the most important intermediates which can undergo a series of 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reactions. The C-C heterolysis of oxirane is believed to be the most atom-economic and straightforward way to generate carbonyl ylide. However, this chemistry was only achieved under photochemical and thermal conditions in past years. In this work, the one-step diastereoselective synthesis of cis-2,5-disubstituted 1,3-dioxolanes via [3 + 2] cycloadditions of aldehydes and carbonyl ylide, which is obtained from Lewis acid catalyzed C-C bond heterolysis of aryl oxiranyl diketones at ambient temperature, is described.

Abstract:In the presence of Lewis acid TMSOTf, ring-opening reaction of aryl cyclopropyl ketone with arylaldehyde took place under mild conditions to give 2-(2-hydroxyethyl)-1,3-diarylpropenone in good yield. By protection of hydroxy group with triethylsilyl group (TES), the corresponding ring-opened product 7 was obtained in high yield with good geometrical selectivity.

Abstract:3-Zircona-1-cyclopentenes and zirconacyclopentanes react with aldehydes at or below 25 °C to give the corresponding carbonyl addition products, i.e., 7-membered oxazirconacycles, which can be readily converted to the corresponding alcohols via protonolysis and 5-iodoalcohols via iodinolysis; the latter product can be further converted to 7-membered lactones via Pd-catalyzed carbonylation.
