Abstract:The two-volume set LNAI 8346 and 8347 constitutes the thoroughly refereed proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Advanced Data Mining and Applications, ADMA 2013, held in Hangzhou, China, in December 2013. The 32 regular papers and 64 short papers presented in these two volumes were carefully reviewed and selected from 222 submissions. The papers included in these two volumes cover the following topics: opinion mining, behavior mining, data stream mining, sequential data mining, web mining, image mining, text mining, social network mining, classification, clustering, association rule mining, pattern mining, regression, predication, feature extraction, identification, privacy preservation, applications, and machine learning.

Abstract:Various kinds of social networks develop explosively, such as online social networks, scientific cooperation networks, athlete networks, airport passage networks, and so on. With the large number of participants and real-time property, social networks increasingly demonstrate their strength in information dissemination. Social computing has become a promising research area and attracts lots of attention. Analyzing and mining human behaviors, topological structure, and information diffusion in social networks can help to understand the essential mechanism of macroscopic phenomena, discover potential public interest, and provide early warnings of collective emergencies.

Abstract:Big Data is defined as an emerging paradigm that includes complex and large-scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional tools. Traditional data analytics methods have been commonly used for many applications, such as text classfication, image recognition, and video tracking. For analysis purposes, these data often need to be represented as vectors. However, many other types of data objects in real-world applications contain rich feature vectors and structure information, such as chemical com pounds in bio-pharmacy, brain regions in brain networks and users in social networks. Unfortunately, vector representa tions are very simple features that do not inherently contain the object’s structure information. In reality, objectsmay have complicated characteristics depending on how the objects are assessed and characterized. Data may also reside in het erogeneous domains, such as traditional tabular-based data, sequential patterns, social networks, time series information, and semi-structured data. As a result, novel data analytics methods are needed to discover meaningful knowledge in advanced applications from objects with large-scale com plex characteristics. In total, there were 104 submissions to this IEEE ACCESS Special Section, with 39 accepted after rigorous peer review.

Abstract:The application of Data Mining (DM) technologies has shown an explosive growth in an increasing number of different areas of business, government and science. Two of the most important business areas are finance, in particular in banks and insurance companies, and e-business, such as web portals, e-commerce and ad management services. In spite of the close relationship between research and practice in Data Mining, it is not easy to find information on some of the most important issues involved in real world application of DM technology, from business and data understanding to evaluation and deployment. Papers often describe research that was developed without taking into account constraints imposed by the motivating application. When these issues are taken into account, they are frequently not discussed in detail because the paper must focus on the method. Therefore knowledge that could be useful for those who would like to apply the same approach on a related problem is not shared. The papers in this book address some of these issues. This book is of interest not only to Data Mining researchers and practitioners, but also to students who wish to have an idea of the practical issues involved in Data Mining.

Abstract:Advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning have catalyzed the transformation of big data analytics and management into pivotal domains for research and application. This work explores the theoretical foundations, methodological advancements, and practical implementations of these technologies, emphasizing their role in uncovering actionable insights from massive, high-dimensional datasets. The study presents a systematic overview of data preprocessing techniques, including data cleaning, normalization, integration, and dimensionality reduction, to prepare raw data for analysis. Core analytics methodologies such as classification, clustering, regression, and anomaly detection are examined, with a focus on algorithmic innovation and scalability. Furthermore, the text delves into state-of-the-art frameworks for data mining and predictive modeling, highlighting the role of neural networks, support vector machines, and ensemble methods in tackling complex analytical challenges. Special emphasis is placed on the convergence of big data with distributed computing paradigms, including cloud and edge computing, to address challenges in storage, computation, and real-time analytics. Abstract:Abstract In this chapter, we provide a review of the knowledge discovery process, including data handling, data mining methods and software, and current research activities. The introduction defines and provides a general background to data mining knowledge discovery in databases. In particular, the potential for data mining to improve manufacturing processes in industry is discussed. This is followed by an outline of the entire process of knowledge discovery in databases in the second part of the chapter. The third part presents data handling issues, including databases and preparation of the data for analysis. Although these issues are generally considered uninteresting to modelers, the largest portion of the knowledge discovery process is spent handling data. It is also of great importance since the resulting models can only be as good as the data on which they are based. The fourth part is the core of the chapter and describes popular data mining methods, separated as supervised versus unsupervised learning. In supervised learning, the training data set includes observed output values (“correct answers”) for the given set of inputs. If the outputs are continuous/quantitative, then we have a regression problem. If the outputs are categorical/qualitative, then we have a classification problem. Supervised learning methods are described in the context of both regression and classification (as appropriate), beginning with the simplest case of linear models, then presenting more complex modeling with trees, neural networks, and support vector machines, and concluding with some methods, such as nearest neighbor, that are only for classification. In unsupervised learning, the training data set does not contain output values. Unsupervised learning methods are described under two categories: association rules and clustering. Association rules are appropriate for business applications where precise numerical data may not be available while clustering methods are more technically similar to the supervised learning methods presented in this chapter. Finally, this section closes with a review of various software options. The fifth part presents current research projects, involving both industrial and business applications. In the first project, data is collected from monitoring systems, and the objective is to detect unusual activity that may require action. For example, credit card companies monitor customersʼ credit card usage to detect possible fraud. While methods from statistical process control were developed for similar purposes, the difference lies in the quantity of data. The second project describes data mining tools developed by Genichi Taguchi, who is well known for his industrial work on robust design. The third project tackles quality and productivity improvement in manufacturing industries. Although some detail is given, considerable research is still needed to develop a practical tool for todayʼs complex manufacturing processes. Finally, the last part provides a brief discussion on remaining problems and future trends.

Abstract:Data mining, or knowledge discovery in databases (KDD), is an interdisciplinary field that integrates techniques from several research areas including machine learning, statistics, database systems, and pattern recognition, for the analysis of large volumes of possibly complex, highly-distributed and poorly-organized data. The prosperity of the data mining field may attribute to two essential reasons. Firstly, a huge amount of data is collected and stored everyday. On the one hand, along with the continuing development of advanced technologies in many domains, data is generated at enormous speeds. For examples, purchases data at department/grocery stores, bank/credit card transaction data, e-commerce data, Internet traffic data that describes the browsing history of Web users, remote sensor data from agricultural satellites, and gene expression data from microarray technology. On the other hand, the progress made in hardware technology allows today’s computer systems to store very large amounts of data. Secondly, with these large volumes of data at hand, the data owners have an imminent intent to turn them into useful knowledge. From a commercial viewpoint, the ultimate goal of the data owners is to gain more and pay less for their business activities. Under the competition pressure, they want to enhance their services, develop cost-effective strategies, and target the right group of potential customers. From a scientific viewpoint, when traditional techniques are infeasible in dealing with the raw data, data mining may help scientists in many ways, such as classifying and segmenting data. By applying the knowledge extracted from data mining, the business analyst may rate customers by their propensity to respond to an offer, the doctor may estimate the probability of an illness re-occurrence, the website publisher may display customized Web pages to individual Web users according to their browsing habit, and the geneticist may discover novel gene-gene interaction patterns. In this talk, we aim to provide a general picture for important data mining steps, topics, algorithms and challenges.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to explore the practical application of big data comprehensive mining and analysis technology in the overall human resource management work of the entire enterprise under the gradual increase in the amount of enterprise data, so as to effectively improve the overall core strategic competitiveness of the entire enterprise and improve the overall human resource management level of the entire enterprise. This article adopts the risk management theory of quantifying the characteristics of business management data, analyzes various management models in modern human resource information system management, and analyzes the entire process of modern enterprise daily operation and various types of human resource system risk management and business data. Combined with quantitative management theory, it introduces the basic concepts of business data feature mining system theory and its most common six data analysis and calculation methods. The module design examples are organically combined, and the traditional data mining analysis theory and its application are extended to the enterprise human resource project management information system. Finally, the experimental results show that the use of big data mining and analysis technology can solve the problems of human resource quality management in small- and medium-sized enterprises. The independent quantitative data mining analysis model has achieved 25% improvement in the application effect of the analysis of the types of human resources in management enterprises, the prevention of internal talent loss in management enterprises, and the performance evaluation management system of enterprises.

Abstract:Data mining is a powerful technology that converts data into competitive intelligence which businesses can use to proactively predict future trends, uncover meanings to historical happenings and discover business imperatives which was hitherto unknown to business. Data mining is a “process of discovering and interpreting previously unknown patterns in data to aid business in better decision-making”. Data mining is a set of automated techniques used to extract buried or previously unknown pieces of information from large databases. Data mining by nature is an iterative process and gets refined for further probing into data in a continuous manner. From a data management point of view, the data mining process requires exploration of data, creating the analytic data sets for evaluation, generating patterns and forecasting models.

Abstract:The main stream of research in data mining (or knowledge discovery in databases) focuses on algorithms and automatic or semi-automatic processes for discovering knowledge hidden in data. In this paper, we adopt a more general and goal oriented view of data mining. Data mining is regarded as a field of study covering the theories, methodologies, techniques, and activities with the goal of discovering new and useful knowledge. One of its objectives is to design and implement data mining systems. A miner solves problems of data mining manually, or semi-automatically by using such systems. However, there is a lack of studies on how to assist a miner in solving data mining problems. From the experiences and lessons of decision support systems, we introduce the concept of data mining support systems (DMSS). We draw an analogy between the field of decision-making and the field of data mining, and between the role of a manager and the role of a data miner. A DMSS is an active and highly interactive computer system that assists data mining activities. The needs and the basic features of DMSS are discussed.

Abstract:We are delighted to welcome you to the 8th ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM 2015), held in Shanghai, China, from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, 2015. As in the previous years, WSDM continues to be a leading forum for reporting the latest research developments in the field. We are pleased to present here the proceedings of the conference. We received a total of 238 submissions, out of which 39 were accepted for publication in the proceedings, thus reaching an acceptance rate of 16.4% (compared to 18% last year). The accepted papers are from 44 institutions in 16 countries, making WSDM a truly international forum. This year, oral presentation slots were allocated to all papers. Yet, in order to maintain the single track model that most attendees prefer, we introduced this year short 10-minute presentations. Out of the 39 accepted papers, 18 were assigned such shorter slots, while 21 were assigned longer 20-minute slots. The type of slot was chosen by the Senior PC members and Program Chairs, based on whether the topic and the content of the paper would appeal to a broad group of conference attendees. In addition to oral presentations, authors of all accepted papers were invited to present their work in an interactive poster session. We would like to acknowledge the tremendous work of the 28 Senior Program Committee members, 220 Program Committee members, and 41 additional reviewers. The credit for creating a high quality technical program goes to them. To recognize the hard work of the best reviewers, which rarely makes it to the public limelight, this year we created Outstanding Reviewer Awards. 3 members of the Senior Program Committee and 27 members of the Program Committee received these awards. The technical program this year featured keynotes by prominent researchers from the industry and academia, Lada Adamic (Facebook), Michael Franklin (UC Berkeley), and Thorsten Joachims (Cornell University). We thank the keynote speakers for their illuminating talks and for sharing their insights and wisdom with the conference attendees. The program also featured 5 Practice & Experience talks, which were introduced for the first time at WSDM'14. These were presented by Tushar Chandra (Google), Rong Jin (Baidu), Jure Leskovec (Stanford), Kaihua Zhu (Baidu), and Juchao Zhuo (Tencent). We thank the P&E speakers for taking the time off their busy schedules to attend the conference and share their experience in applying recent research results in industrial settings.
