Abstract:Various kinds of social networks develop explosively, such as online social networks, scientific cooperation networks, athlete networks, airport passage networks, and so on. With the large number of participants and real-time property, social networks increasingly demonstrate their strength in information dissemination. Social computing has become a promising research area and attracts lots of attention. Analyzing and mining human behaviors, topological structure, and information diffusion in social networks can help to understand the essential mechanism of macroscopic phenomena, discover potential public interest, and provide early warnings of collective emergencies.

Abstract:Big Data is defined as an emerging paradigm that includes complex and large-scale information beyond the processing capability of conventional tools. Traditional data analytics methods have been commonly used for many applications, such as text classfication, image recognition, and video tracking. For analysis purposes, these data often need to be represented as vectors. However, many other types of data objects in real-world applications contain rich feature vectors and structure information, such as chemical com pounds in bio-pharmacy, brain regions in brain networks and users in social networks. Unfortunately, vector representa tions are very simple features that do not inherently contain the object’s structure information. In reality, objectsmay have complicated characteristics depending on how the objects are assessed and characterized. Data may also reside in het erogeneous domains, such as traditional tabular-based data, sequential patterns, social networks, time series information, and semi-structured data. As a result, novel data analytics methods are needed to discover meaningful knowledge in advanced applications from objects with large-scale com plex characteristics. In total, there were 104 submissions to this IEEE ACCESS Special Section, with 39 accepted after rigorous peer review.

Abstract:I n many of today’s data-driven applications, the main theme seems to revolve around the effective and efficient use of ‘big data’ generated in modern processes/systems. This usually requires the involvement of various disciplines such as Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics. The term data mining is often used to describe in general the analysis efforts of large data sets and has attracted enormous interest in multiple research fields in recent years. The knowledge generated through data mining has benefited a variety of application domains. This special issue of QREI provides a collection of recent research efforts in this area. We are very grateful for the contributions of the authors who submitted their work for this special issue. After two rounds of rigorous reviews, eight papers are accepted for publication. The application domains include engineering, health care, mobile networks, and finance. Motivated by an ingot growth process in semiconductor manufacturing, the paper by Dai et al. proposes a method to monitor growth profile trajectories of unequal lengths. The paper by Zhang et al. proposes a method to estimate the remaining useful life for engineering systems with high fluctuating degradation. The paper by Zeng and Peterson develops models to mine telephone nurse triage data. These models reveal the variation in the accessibility of the triage service and the effect of weekday/weekend, which provide significant information for performance assessment and improvement of the service. Duan et al. present a semisupervised learning method to integrate low-accuracy and high-accuracy mobile device location data. The paper by Li et al. proposes an L1-regularized support vector machine and applies it to the modeling of financial early warning systems. Phaladiganon et al. propose a support vector data description method, in which the boundary constructed for differentiating novel from normal patterns considers both shape and dense region of the data. Han and Clemmensen propose a double weighted support vector regression in which one weight is added to the slack variables in the objective function and another weight to the slack variables in the constraints. This approach is shown to be able to describe the relative importance of observations and lower the influence of possible outliners. The paper by Smith et al. studies how to improve statistical process control methods for understanding and visualizing process variation in data-rich environment and creates a quality visualization toolkit for practitioners. Abstract:Advancements in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning have catalyzed the transformation of big data analytics and management into pivotal domains for research and application. This work explores the theoretical foundations, methodological advancements, and practical implementations of these technologies, emphasizing their role in uncovering actionable insights from massive, high-dimensional datasets. The study presents a systematic overview of data preprocessing techniques, including data cleaning, normalization, integration, and dimensionality reduction, to prepare raw data for analysis. Core analytics methodologies such as classification, clustering, regression, and anomaly detection are examined, with a focus on algorithmic innovation and scalability. Furthermore, the text delves into state-of-the-art frameworks for data mining and predictive modeling, highlighting the role of neural networks, support vector machines, and ensemble methods in tackling complex analytical challenges. Special emphasis is placed on the convergence of big data with distributed computing paradigms, including cloud and edge computing, to address challenges in storage, computation, and real-time analytics. The integration of ethical considerations, including data privacy and compliance with global standards, ensures a holistic perspective on data management. Practical applications across healthcare, finance, marketing, and policy-making illustrate the real-world impact of these technologies. Identifying The Academic Rising Stars Via Pairwise Citation Increment Ranking

Abstract:Predicting the fast-rising young researchers (the Academic Rising Stars) in the future provides useful guidance to the research community, e. g., offering competitive candidates to university for young faculty hiring as they are expected to have success academic careers. In this work, given a set of young researchers who have published the first first-author paper recently, we solve the problem of how to effectively predict the top k% researchers who achieve the highest citation increment in Delta t years. We explore a series of factors that can drive an author to be fast-rising and design a novel pairwise citation increment ranking (PCIR) method that leverages those factors to predict the academic rising stars. Experimental results on the large ArnetMiner dataset with over 1.7 million authors demonstrate the effectiveness of PCIR. Specifically, it outperforms all given benchmark methods, with over 8% average improvement. Further analysis demonstrates that temporal features are the best indicators for rising stars prediction, while venue features are less relevant.

Abstract:Online social networking is one of the most prominent features and main reasons of the big data era. In this paper, we first present the immense opportunities brought by big data in: advancing the technical level of the Chinese IT industry, leading development of the new Internet economy, and accelerating interdisciplinary research between sociology and information science. Next we analyze key issues in online social networks and point out new challenges of big social data research on semantic understanding and analysis, multi-modal association and fusion, group behavior analysis and mining, multidimensional analysis and visualization, and system development and integration. We then focus on introducing key international and domestic achievements in big data and online social networks. We conclude with a look at future trends in big social data analytics and mining.

Abstract:The papers in this special section focus on scholarly data collection and knowledge discovery. Academics and researchers worldwide continue to produce large numbers of scholarly documents including papers, books, technical reports, etc., and associated data such as tutorials, proposals, and course materials. The ever-increasing diversity of disciplines and complexity of real-word problems, require researchers to seek new inspiration and collaboration outside of their own fields. Nowadays, besides traditional venues of collaboration such as conference meetings, the Internet provides a wide range of platforms for scholars to engage with other scholars. These new platforms (such as Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Wi-ki-style virtual collaboration sites) enrich and document the ways scholars share academic resources, exchange opinions, follow each other’s research, keep up with current research trends, and build their professional networks. The first part of this special issue includes two articles that exemplify research opportunities and challenges in scholarly big data. Their contributions cover three themes: scalable algorithms for extracting scholarly-specific information content, fine-grained tools for analyzing and anticipating scientific impact, and system design for supporting scholarly specific information query.

Abstract:Data mining has actively contributed to solving many real-world problems with a variety of techniques. Traditional approaches in this field are classification, clustering and regression. During the last few years a number of chal-lenges have emerged, such as imbalanced data, multi-label and multi-instance problems, low quality and/or noisy data or semi-supervised learning, among others [item 1) in the Appendix]. When these non-standard scenarios are encountered in the realm of big data, it remains an uncharted research territory, although a growing effort has been made to break the limits. The current trend is to address the classical and newly emerging data mining problems in big data and knowledge processing. Granular computing provides a powerful tool for multiple granularity and multiple-view data analysis at differ-ent granularity levels, which has demonstrated strong capabil-ities and advantages in intelligent data analysis, pattern recog-nition, machine learning and uncertain reasoning [item 2) inthe Appendix]. Big data often contains a significant amount of unstructured, uncertain and imprecise data. There are new challenges regarding the scalability of granular computing when addressing very big data sets [item 3) in the Appendix]. Big data mining relies on distributed computational strate-gies; it is often impossible to store and process data on one single computing node. The exploration of data mining and granular computing in big data and knowledge processing is an emerging field which crosses multiple research disciplines and industry domains, including transportation, communications, social network, medical health, and so on.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">The mining industry faces a number of challenges that promote the adoption of new technologies. Big data, which is driven by the accelerating progress of information and communication technology, is one of the promising technologies that can reshape the entire mining landscape. Despite numerous attempts to apply big data in the mining industry, fundamental problems of big data, especially big data management (BDM), in the mining industry persist. This paper aims to fill the gap by presenting the basics of BDM. This work provides a brief introduction to big data and BDM, and it discusses the challenges encountered by the mining industry to indicate the necessity of implementing big data. It also summarizes data sources in the mining industry and presents the potential benefits of big data to the mining industry. This work also envisions a future in which a global database project is established and big data is used together with other technologies (i.e., automation), supported by government policies and following international standards. This paper also outlines the precautions for the utilization of BDM in the mining industry.</p>

Abstract:Since the first Global Tech Mining (GTM) conference was held in Atlanta in 2011, the GTM conference has created a platform to connect tech mining researchers, exchange ideas and research progress, and promote collaborations. When it came to its 10th anniversary in 2020, COVID-19 forced the GTM conference into an online format. In tumultuous times for ST&I research activity, the GTM conference sought to focus on several issues: How to better collect and combine multiple "large data" sources? How to analyze these data effectively? And how to utilize these results more powerfully in ST&I management? In this collection, 15 papers are selected after evaluating by the science advisory committee, the guest editor team, and our peer review experts to address the following aspects regarding "tech mining": (1) DATA: Maximizing the potential of traditional and novel data; (2) METHODS: Advancing and integrating methods; (3) APPLICATIONS: Innovative analyses translating to usefulintelligence.

Abstract:Production and distribution are two key constituents of a supply chain. In view of the growing availability of data and advances in big data analytics techniques, there have been more and more applications of data analytics to deal with the problems in production and distribution management. With this in mind, we proposed a special issue on 'Big Data Analytics in Production and Distribution Management' to report the latest development in this field. In this editorial, we first introduce the background and examine the existing review works on the applications of data analytics to operations management. We then introduce the papers accepted in the issue, and discuss how different types of big data analytics techniques are applied to production and distribution management, including demand forecasting, production scheduling, distribution management, manufacturing management, and supply chain management. Finally, we conclude the paper with a discussion of future research.
