Abstract:Liquid-like binary Cu2-δX (X = S, Se, and Te) chalcogenides and their ternary solid solutions have gained notable attention in thermoelectrics due to their interesting and abnormal thermal and electrical transport properties. However, previous studies mainly focus on a single element alloying at either an anion or cation site whereas the investigation on cation/anion co-alloying is very rare so far. Here, a series of quaternary Cu2-2 xAg2 xSe1- xS x ( x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15) liquid-like copper chalcogenide materials have been fabricated and the effects of Ag/S co-alloying on the thermoelectric properties of Cu2Se have been systematically studied. It is found that all compounds are mixed phases at room temperature but single cubic phase at high temperatures. The introduction of Ag and S in Cu2Se brings about a large mass fluctuation rather than strain field fluctuation that effectively suppresses the lattice thermal conductivity. Furthermore, on increasing the Ag and S contents, the high electrical conductivity of pristine Cu2Se is well tuned to the optimal range derived from the single parabolic band model analysis. Consequently, a peak zT of 1.6 at 900 K is achieved in Cu1.8Ag0.2Se0.9S0.1, which is about 33% higher than that of binary Cu2Se.

Abstract:Inorganic Na-ion superionic conductors play a vital role in all-solid-state Na batteries that operate at room temperature. Sodium thioantimonate (Na3SbS4), a popular sulfide-based solid electrolyte, has attracted serious attention due to its advantages of high ionic conductivity at room temperature and impressive chemical stability under ambient conditions. Much research detailing Na3SbS4 focused on its synthetic approaches and interfacial stability against Na metal, yet, there is limited information elucidating a fundamental understanding of the Na- ion diffusion mechanisms in Na3SbS4 with different crystal structures (e.g., tetragonal and cubic). Herein, we combine real-time electrochemical impedance measurements with theoretical simulations based on density functional theory and in situ quasi-elastic neutron scattering to study the Na-ion conductive properties of Na3SbS4 during its phase transition from a tetragonal to cubic structure. Although there is a slight change in the lattice parameters, the energy barrier for Na-ion diffusion in the tetragonal structure was determined to be much larger (5-10 times) than that in the cubic structure from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. The high degree of symmetry in cubic Na3SbS4 leads to less interatomic correlations between Na and S(Sb) atoms, a shorter jump distance (2.85 angstrom), and a larger diffusion coefficient. This research provides insight into understanding the Na-ion diffusion in solid electrolytes with phase transitions and provides fundamental guidance for designing novel solid-state Na-ion conductors.

Abstract:Copper silver selenide has two phases: low-temperature semimetal phase (α-CuAgSe) and high-temperature phonon-glass superionic phase (β-CuAgSe). In this work, the electric transport and thermoelectric properties of the two phases are investigated. It is revealed that β-CuAgSe is a p-type semiconductor and exhibits low thermal conductivity while α-CuAgSe shows metallic conduction with dominant n-type carriers and low electrical resistivity. The thermoelectric figure of merit zT of the polycrystalline β-CuAgSe at 623K is ~0.95, suggesting that superionic CuAgSe can be a promising thermoelectric candidate in the intermediate temperature range.

Abstract:Binary silver chalcogenides (Ag2X, X = S, Se, Te) are a group of intriguing thermoelectric materials. When utilised for thermoelectrics, however, the syntheses of these chalcogenides commonly require energy-intensive, high-temperature melting-annealing processes. Herein, we have developed a general surfactant-free and scalable solution synthesis strategy to nano/micro-particles of binary silver chalcogenides, which requires neither high temperature nor long reaction duration. The chalcogenide particles were spark plasma sintered into pellets with porous structures. By modifying the Ag+/X2- molar ratios in the solution precursors from 2:1 to 2:1.1, the thermoelectric properties of the pellets have been effectively optimised, leading to maximum ZT values of 0.84 at 380 K for Ag2Se, 0.59 at 650 K for Ag2Te and 0.27 at 540 K for Ag2S that are comparable to those of samples fabricated by other synthetic methods, such as melting and annealing. This study provides a general surfactant-free solution approach to binary silver chalcogenide nano/micro-materials with tuneable thermoelectric properties.

Abstract:A good thermoelectric material usually has a high power factor and low thermal conductivity for high figure of merit (ZT), and is also environmentally friendly and economical. Superionic compounds are heavily studied because of their ultra-low thermal conductivity even though the thermal stability remains an issue. In this work, we report a superionic argyrodite compound Ag8SnSe6 as a promising mid-temperature thermoelectric material because of its high ZT and good thermal stability up to 550 degrees C. It is revealed that Ag8SnSe6 exhibits a decent Seebeck coefficient (n-type) and electrical conductivity. At the same time, its thermal conductivity is lower than the glass limit with the thermal capacity CV below 3Nk(B) at high temperature, where N is the Avogadro's number and k(B) the Boltzmann constant. Detailed microstructural and thermodynamic characterization of this compound is performed to understand the electronic and phononic origins of the thermoelectric properties. The highly random ionic occupations in the cubic phase, leading to the molten silver sublattice and phononic mode softening, are responsible for the very low thermal conductivity and ZT similar to 1.1 at 450 degrees C.
Nano-scale Compositional Oscillation and Phase Intergrowth in Cu2S0.5Se0.5 and Their Role in Thermal Transport

Abstract:Solid solution alloying is a promising strategy to establish high performance thermoelectrics. By alloying different elements, phase structures and phase compositions may vary accompanied by appearance of variety of interesting microstructures including mass fluctuation, lattice strain, nano-scale defects and spinodal decomposition, all of which may greatly influence the electrical and specifically the thermal transport of the material. In the present study, atomic structures of Cu2S0.5Se0.5 solid solution have been examined by using atom-resolved electron microscopy in order to investigate the structure-correlated physical insights for the abnormal thermal transport in this solid solution. Then the exceptional intergrowth nanostructures were observed. The solid solution consists of two high symmetrical phases, i.e. the hexagonal and cubic phase, which alternately intergrow to form highly oriented ultra-thin lamellae of nano or even, unit cell scales. The compositional oscillation in Se/S atomic ratio during alloying is responsible for the phase stability and intergrowth nanostructures. The unique binary phase intergrowth nanostructures make great contribution to the ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity comparable to glass and extremely short phonon mean free path of only 1.04 angstrom, peculiar continuous hexagonal-to-cubic structural transformation without a critical transition temperature and its corresponding abnormal changes of thermal characters with temperatures. The present study further evokes the unlimited possibilities and potentials for tailoring nanostructures by alloying for improved thermoelectric performance. Abstract:Thermoelectric silver selenide alloys have attracted significant attention owing to their high carrier mobility and promising thermoelectric performance. In this study, the phase diagram window is utilized to synthesize Ag2Se1+ x samples within the range of −0.02 ≤ x ≤ 0.03. It is found that an excess of Se is helpful to fabricate pure-phase Ag2Se samples at room temperature. Combined with the optimized carrier concentration and reduced thermal conductivity, Ag2Se1.03 sample exhibits an average zT ∼ 0.72 in the temperature range of 310–380 K, as well as a 25 % improvement of the Vickers hardness compared to that of the stoichiometric Ag2Se sample.

Abstract:Nonstoichiometric ternary thermoelectric materials Ag2−ySbyTe1+y (y=1.26, 1.29, 1.32, 1.35, and 1.38) were prepared by a direct melt-quench and hot press process. In situ composites of AgSbTe2 and Sb2Te3 were obtained over the entire composition range with a typical Widmanstätten pattern. Thermoelectric properties were measured from 300K to 673K, which changed systematically with Sb2Te3 ratio. The phase transition occurring at about 633K, forming the single phased AgSbTe2, can significantly influence the electrical transport properties. Various crystallographic defects in different scales, such as atomic ordering, nanodomains, dislocations and stacking faults, have been observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and their influences on lattice thermal conductivity have been discussed. Due to the extremely low thermal conductivity (about 0.6Wm−1K−1) and large positive Seebeck coefficient of ∼250μVK−1 detected in Ag0.71Sb1.29Te2.29, the maximum dimensionless figure of merit ZT of 1.37 was obtained at 600K.
Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity and Superior Thermoelectric Performance in AgAlS2 and AgAlSe2

Abstract:The search for thermoelectric materials with efficient energy conversion capabilities is crucial for addressing energy crises and environmental issues. In this work, we explore two Ag-based chalcopyrites, AgAlS2 and AgAlSe2, as potential thermoelectrics with outstanding performance using first-principles calculations and Boltzmann Transport theory. We compute formation energies and phonon spectra to verify their thermodynamic and dynamical stabilities. In addition, we perform ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations to confirm their thermal stability at high temperatures. Using the PBE and HSE06 methodologies, these materials are classified as medium-wide indirect band gap semiconductors. Remarkably, at 700 K, AgAlS2 and AgAlSe2 show low lattice thermal conductivities (κL) of 0.53 and 0.37 W/mK, respectively, in the z directions. The ultralow κL observed in the AgAlSe2 compound is attributed to the strong phonon anharmonicity and increased scattering rates resulting from the simultaneous presence of antibonding-induced anharmonic rattling of Ag atoms and low frequency optical phonon modes. Furthermore, at optimal carrier doping, the flat and heavy degenerate valence band edges result in high thermopower, while the light bands at conduction band minimum lead to high electrical conductivity (σ) and electronic thermal conductivity (ke). Upon combining the high power factor and low κL, the predicted figure of merit (ZT) can reach up to 1.55 (2.18) for p-type AgAlS(Se)2 at 700 K, suggesting that Ag-based chalcopyrites are promising thermoelectrics at medium temperature.

Abstract:The subject of the involved phase transition in solid materials has formed not only the basis of materials technology but also the central issue of solid-state chemistry for centuries. The ability to design and control the required changes in physical properties within phase transition becomes key prerequisite for the modern functionalized materials. Herein, we have experimentally achieved the high thermoelectric performance (ZT value reaches 1.5 at 700 K) and reversible p-n-p semiconducting switching integrated in a dimetal chalcogenide, AgBiSe(2) during the continuous hexagonal-rhombohedral-cubic phase transition. The clear-cut evidences in temperature-dependent positron annihilation and Raman spectra confirmed that the p-n-p switching is derived from the bimetal atoms exchange within phase transition, whereas the full disordering of bimetal atoms after the bimetal exchange results in the high thermoelectric performance. The combination of p-n-p switching and high thermoelectric performance enables the dimetal chalcogenides perfect candidates for novel multifunctional electronic devices. The discovery of bimetal atoms exchange during the phase transition brings novel phenomena with unusual properties which definitely enrich solid-state chemistry and materials science.

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology provides a promising solution to sustainable energy utilization and scalable power supply. Recently, Ag2Q‐based (Q = S, Se, Te) silver chalcogenides have come forth as potential thermoelectric materials that are endowed with complex crystal structures, high carrier mobility coupled with low lattice thermal conductivity, and even exceptional plasticity. This review presents the latest advances in this material family, from binary compounds to ternary and quaternary alloys, covering the understanding of multi‐scale structures and peculiar properties, the optimization of thermoelectric performance, and the rational design of new materials. The "composition‐phase structure‐thermoelectric/mechanical properties" correlation is emphasized. Flexible and hetero‐shaped thermoelectric prototypes based on Ag2Q materials are also demonstrated. Several key problems and challenges are put forward concerning further understanding and optimization of Ag2Q‐based thermoelectric chalcogenides. This article is protected by copyright. Phase-Controlled Synthesis and Quasi-Static Dielectric Resonances in Silver Iron Sulfide (AgFeS2 ) Nanocrystals

Abstract:Ternary metal-chalcogenide semiconductor nanocrystals are an attractive class of materials due to their tunable optoelectronic properties that result from a wide range of compositional flexibility and structural diversity. Here, the phase-controlled synthesis of colloidal silver iron sulfide (AgFeS2 ) nanocrystals is reported and their resonant light-matter interactions are investigated. The product composition can be shifted selectively from tetragonal to orthorhombic by simply adjusting the coordinating ligand concentration, while keeping the other reaction parameters unchanged. The results show that excess ligands impact precursor reactivity, and consequently the nanocrystal growth rate, thus deterministically dictating the resulting crystal structure. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the strong ultraviolet-visible extinction peak exhibited by AgFeS2 nanocrystals is a consequence of a quasi-static dielectric resonance (DR), analogous to the optical response observed in CuFeS2 nanocrystals. Spectroscopic studies and computational calculations confirm that a negative permittivity at ultraviolet/visible frequencies arises due to the electronic structure of these intermediate-band (IB) semiconductor nanocrystals, resulting in a DR consisting of resonant valence-band-to-intermediate-band excitations, as opposed to the well-known localized surface plasmon resonance response typically observed in metallic nanostructures. Overall, these results expand the current library of an underexplored class of IB semiconductors with unique optical properties, and also enrich the understanding of DRs in ternary metal-iron-sulfide nanomaterials.
An Instant Change of Elastic Lattice Strain during Cu 2 Se Phase Transition: Origin of Abnormal Thermoelectric Properties

Abstract:The superionic conductor Cu2Se is a promising thermoelectric material due to its low thermal conductivity. An abnormal but clear change in the thermoelectric parameters has been observed during the phase transformation from the ordered and non‐cubic α‐Cu2Se to the disordered and cubic β‐Cu2Se. However, the microstructural origin of the abnormal change and its implications for thermoelectric applications remain largely unknown. Herein, by mimicking the real working conditions of thermoelectrics, the phase transition from α‐ to β‐Cu2Se induced by the rising temperature has been carefully investigated by in situ transmission electron microscopy. It is observed that an abrupt and anisotropic volume‐change in the Se‐sublattice occurs when the temperature is raised to the phase transition point. The abnormal change in the crystalline volume versus temperature, which is caused by the local migration of Cu‐ions, induces an instant and uncommon strain‐field, which reduces the carrier's mobility and increases the electrical resistance. Local migration of Cu‐ions is responsible for a quite low thermal conductivity. Such effects exist only at the instance of the phase transition. Observing the thermoelectric response of the structure during the phase transition may provide insights into the development of high performance thermoelectric materials, which fall beyond the traditional approaches.

Colloidal Ag2SbBiSe4 nanocrystals as n‑type thermoelectric materials

Abstract:Materials with low intrinsic thermal conductivity are essential for the development of high-performance thermoelectric devices. At the same time, the solution processing of these materials may enable the cost-effective production of the devices. Herein, we detail a high-yield and scalable colloidal synthesis route to produce Ag2SbBiSe4 nanocrystals (NCs) using amine-thiol-Se chemistry. The quaternary chalcogenide material is consolidated by a rapid hot-press maintaining the cubic crystalline structure. Transport measurements confirm that n-type Ag2SbBiSe4 exhibits an inherently ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of ca. 0.34 W m-1K-1 at 760 K. Moreover, a modulation doping strategy based on the blending of semiconductor Ag2SbBiSe4 and metallic Sn NCs is demonstrated to control the charge carrier concentration in the final composite material. The introduction of Sn nanodomains additionally blocks phonon propagation thus contributing to reducing the thermal conductivity of the final material. Ultimately, a peak thermoelectric figure of merit value of 0.64 at 760 K is achieved for n-type Ag2SbBiSe4-Sn nanocomposites that also demonstrate a notable Vickers hardness of 185 HV.
Ultra-low lattice thermal conductivity and enhanced thermoelectric performance in Ag2−xSe1/3S1/3Te1/3 via anion permutation and cation modulation

Abstract:Silver chalcogenides Ag2X (X = S, Se, and Te) bear intrinsically low lattice thermal conductivity and decent electrical properties due to their ionic conduction feature. In this work, we report that even lower lattice thermal conductivities and enhanced thermoelectric performance can be realized in moderately porous Ag2−xSe1/3S1/3Te1/3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.15) samples synthesized via high-energy ball milling and spark plasma sintering (SPS) methods. Lattice thermal conductivity for sample Ag1.9Se1/3S1/3Te1/3 can get down to ~0.2 W·m−1·K−1 at room temperature; maximum figure of merit ZT value appears at 423 K to be ~0.55, and the calculated average ZT is 0.46 from 300 to 423 K (~10% higher than state-of-art Ag2Se). We attribute the enhanced figure of merit ZT largely to the significantly reduced lattice thermal conductivity, which results from the synergetic effect of strong alloy scattering at anion site due to Te/Se/S permutation and moderate sample porosity up to 14.42%.

Abstract:An entropic and enthalpic‐co‐stabilization approach is employed to successfully synthesize Cu2‐yAgy(In0.06Sn0.94)Se2S high‐entropy materials with stable nanosized grains even at elevated temperatures. This stability is attained through entropy engineering, surface ligand retention, and a controlled secondary phase. Consequently, an ultra‐low thermal conductivity of 0.22 W m−1 K−1, a record‐high zT value of 1.76 at 873 K for Cu1.73Ag0.27(In0.06Sn0.94)Se2S is achieved. With the reduction in size, nanoparticles (NPs) exhibit unique chemical and physical properties due to surface effects and size‐dependent electronic bands. However, a significant challenge that limits their practical application is the tendency for grain growth at elevated temperatures. Herein, an entropic and enthalpic‐co‐stabilization strategy is employed in a series of high‐entropy Cu2‐yAgy(In0.06Sn0.94)Se2S materials. Remarkably, the grain size of these materials remains at 70 nm even after repeated tests up to 873 K. This stability has enabled to achieve an ultra‐low thermal conductivity (κtot) of 0.22 W m−1 K−1, a record‐high peak zT value of 1.76, and a high average zT value of 0.54 for nanostructured Cu1.73Ag0.27(In0.06Sn0.94)Se2S. Additionally, a high thermoelectric conversion efficiency of 4.5% for the segmented single‐leg module and 3.8% for the 2‐pair module at ΔT ≈ 460 K are achieved with the Cu2SnSe3‐based material, marking its debut in thermoelectric power generation. These findings provide a paradigm to stabilize grain size and improve the thermoelectric performance of nano‐sized high‐entropy materials (HEMs), presenting a promising avenue for substantial advancements across various applications.

Abstract:Superionic conductors offer unique advantages for novel technological devices in various fields, such as energy storage and neuromorphic computing. Above 414 K, Cu2Se turns into a well-known superionic conductor via a phase transition, and it is demonstrated to exhibit peculiar electrical and thermoelectric properties in bulk. Here, we report a large-area synthesis of ultra-thin single crystalline Cu2Se using the chemical vapor deposition method. We demonstrate that Cu2Se crystals exhibit optically and electrically controllable robust phase reconfiguration below 414 K. Moreover, our results show that the mobility of the liquid-like Cu ion vacancies in Cu2Se causes macroscopic fluctuations in the Cu ordering. Consequently, phase variations are not dictated by the diffusive motion of the ions but by the local energy minima formed due to the interplay between the extrinsic and the intrinsic material parameters. As a result, long-range ordering of the crystal below 414 K is optically observable at a micrometer scale. Our results show that Cu2Se could find applications beyond thermoelectric such as smart optical coatings, optoelectronic switching, and ionic transistors.

Abstract:Phase transition will lead to abrupt change of thermoelectric material’s properties, which will have a negative influence on the application of thermoelectric device. Therefore, avoiding the phase transition of Ag2S is particularly important for its heat collection applications. In this work, we reported, for the first time, that Cu-Se co-alloying in Ag2S can suppress phase transition and improve thermoelectric properties. Specifically, different elements and compounds alloying in Ag2S samples were prepared, and their influences on the phase change behavior and thermoelectric performance stability of Ag2S are systematically studied. It is found that the free enthalpy decreases and the heat absorption peak disappears for the Cu-Se co-alloyed Ag2S sample. In addition, the average lattice thermal conductivity is greatly reduced, and the κ L of Ag1.8Cu0.2S0.5Se0.5 is around 0.27 Wm −1 K −1 from 330 K to 450 K. Therefore, a high ZT is obtained for Cu-Se co-alloyed Ag2S.

[O47] Phase equilibria of thermoelectric materials: Ag-Sb-Te and AgSbTe2-AgSbSe2

Abstract:Ge3MnSb2Te7 and Ge3.5Mn0.5Sb2Te7 are doped variants of Ge4Sb2Te7, a material from the homologous series (GeTe)nSb2Te3. Phase purity was confirmed by ICP-AES, EDX and quantitative yield according to powder X-ray diffraction. Quenched solid solutions are metastable and exhibit a rocksalt-type average structure and contain multiply twinned domains with superstructures. At ∼300 °C, a phase transition leads to a trigonal layered phase, predominantly corresponding to the 33R-Ge3As2Sb6 type. However, traces of a rocksalt-type phase remain. A rocksalt-type high-temperature phase forms between 500 °C and ∼590 °C. EPR spectra reveal the oxidation state +II for Mn [g = 2.001(5)], which is also supported by an effective magnetic moment μeff = 5.713 μB. The Mn2+ content of 7.2(5) at% as derived from the magnetic susceptibility agrees with the nominal content of 7.7 at%. A temperature-dependent change in the line width and shape of the EPR signal below 20 K indicates magnetic ordering, which is in agreement with magnetic measurements. A paramagnetic Curie temperature ΘP = −43 K indicates antiferromagnetic fluctuations that set in at ∼50 K. Mn doping reduces the electrical conductivity, while the Seebeck coefficient increases significantly up to 190 μV/K. The thermoelectric properties are affected by the phase transitions. In a first heating cycle, ZT reaches a maximum of ∼0.5 below 300 °C and again at 500 °C. After the first cycle the first maximum disappears as the metastable phase is accessible only by quenching, but the second one is reproducible. Compared to Ge4Sb2Te7, the ZT value of Mn-doped samples is higher for the quenched phase and at high temperatures.

Abstract:In this work, a comprehensive research coupling experiment and computation has been performed to understand the phase transition of Na3SbS4 and to synthesize cubic Na3SbS4 (c-Na3SbS4), a high temperature phase of Na3SbS4 that is difficult to be preserved from high temperature. The formation of c-Na3SbS4 is verified by Rietveld refinement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Both experiment and theoretical calculation reveal that the ionic conductivity of c-Na3SbS4 is higher than that of t-Na3SbS4, though the values are in the same order of magnitude. Both structures allow fast ion transport.
