Abstract:Bistatic forward-looking synthetic aperture radar (BFSAR) breaks through the limitations of the conventional monostatic SAR on the forward-looking imaging. However, the problems of range cell migration (RCM) caused by the linear range walk and 2-D spatial variability of Doppler parameters become more serious and complicated in translational variant BFSAR. In this article, a keystone transform is introduced to correct the linear RCM. Based on the characteristics of a small aperture, the nonlinear chirp scaling (NCS) is discussed in the frequency domain to equalize the azimuth-range-dependent Doppler parameters. The improved NCS in our newly proposed BFSAR imaging algorithm, especially the re-definition of range direction and the model of spatial variant phase, differentiates this article from all the existing studies in the literature on BFSAR signal processing. Simulation results and real data processing further validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Aim. In our opinion, the R-D algorithm of Bao et al[3] for squint SAS imaging gives images that are not quite satisfactory and therefore needs to be improved if possible. We now offer an improved R-D algorithm. We found that the Fresnel assumption adopted by Ref. 3 is the cause of image quality not quite satisfactory; so, in our improved R-D algorithm, we abandon this assumption. In the full paper, we explain our improved R-D algorithm in detail; in this abstract, we just add some pertinent remarks to listing the two topics of explanation; (1) the geometric and mathematical model for squint SAS imaging and (2) improved R-D algorithm; in topic 2, we derive eqs.(3) through (15) in the full paper, which are needed for programming our improved R-D algorithm; also, in topic 2, the improved algorithm corrects range walk in azimuth time domain firstly and then corrects range curve in frequency domain; still, in topic 2, by virtue of geometric deformation revision, the image is almost indistinguishable from the original scene. Finally we performed simulations with both Ref. 3's and our improved algorithms, whose results are given in Fig.4(a) (our improved R-D algorithm) and Fig.4(b) (Ref. 3's algorithm). These results show preliminarily that the improved algorithm does enhance the quality of squint SAS imaging.

Abstract:With appropriate geometry configurations, bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can break through the limitations of monostatic SAR for forward-looking imaging. Thanks to such a capability, bistatic forward-looking SAR (BFSAR) has extensive potential applications. This paper develops a frequency-domain imaging algorithm for translational invariant BFSAR. The algorithm uses the method of Lengendre polynomials expansion to compute the two dimensional point target reference spectrum, and this spectrum is used to perform the range cell migration correction (RCMC), secondary range compression and azimuth compression. In particular, the Doppler-centroid and bistatic-range dependent interpolation for residual RCMC is presented in detail. In addition, a method that combines the ambiguity and resolution theories to determine the forward-looking imaging swath is also presented in this paper.

Abstract:When the size of target or the rotation angle is big, migration through resolution cell may occur in the bistatic inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR), which will affect the imaging quality. Aiming at the problem of migration through resolution cell of bistatic ISAR in the presence of time-varying bistatic angle, a correction algorithm is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the echo model of bistatic ISAR is built, and the mechanism of migration through resolution cell is analyzed. Migration through range cell may be corrected through the generalized Keystone transformation, and the effect of non-uniform rotation is eliminated at the same time. Then the rotating center is estimated according to the maximum criterion of image contrast, and the range bin is scaled absolutely. A phase compensation term is constructed and the correction of migration through Doppler cell is finished. Finally, the simulations are carried out and the results show that the method proposed in this paper can solve the problem of migration through resolution cell and improve the image quality.

Abstract:This paper is based on the special mode of a stationary receiver configuration in Bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar,and firstly established the basic system geometrical model and signal model,Secondly,Based on the geometric character,two main problems,i.e.spatial variance of the FM rate and cubic phase terms,were introduced in the image formation algorithm.In view of the quadratic model is invalid,when the principle of stationary phase is used to transfer signal from the 2-D frequency domain to Range-Doppler domain,this paper introduced a cubic model to realize the compensation of cubic phase in Range,then after multiplying the quadratic and cubic perturbation function in Range-Doppler domain,the correction of range cell migration and the focus in the range direction can be achieved by expanding FM rate at the reference point,and the improved correction function is then deduced.Finally,corresponding simulated and real bistatic data are processed to support it.

Abstract:Accurate two dimension frequency spectrum (2D FS) with acceleration, two-way range coupling terms, and spatial variant Doppler parameters are main problems to be solved in translational variant bistatic forward-looking SAR (TV BFSAR) with curved trajectory. For these issues, a modified Omega-K imaging algorithm is derived in this paper. The maximum usage of 2D FS based on method of series reversion (MSR) is achieved by linear range cell migration correction and 2D FS is linearized in bistatic range by using high-order polynomial fitting. Then, a method of azimuth resampling is introduced to implement compensation of spatial variant Doppler parameters. And the small-aperture data is focused in the azimuth frequency domain to avoid azimuth aliasing without padding zeros. Finally, the raw bistatic SAR data verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method

Abstract:The conventional monostatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) shows a limitation if a forward-looking geometry is used. However, bistatic forward-looking SAR gives a good solution, providing a high resolution image in the flight path direction. Due to the fact that the range history of bistatic SAR is a double square root, classical imaging algorithm cannot be applied to the bistatic SAR directly. Also it is difficult to deduce imaging algorithm from double square root directly. The hyperbolic approximating method can transform double square root into single one, when being used in forward-looking geometry, and the high order term error is obvious and cannot be ignored. In this paper, we propose a modified hyperbolic approximating method, which makes a cubic term approximation and improves the precision, then we apply the new method to bistatic forward-looking SAR and deduce the bistatic point spectrum. Based on the spectrum, a modified range Doppler algorithm is proposed for focusing bistatic forward-looking SAR. Finally, numerical simulation is used to compare the original hyperbolic approximating method with the modified one for veridating the proposed algorithm and processing approach.

Abstract:Because of the great speed difference between the transmitter and the receiver of the spaceborne/airborne bistatic SAR (SA-BiSAR), the bistatic angle changes with time, which makes the geometric structure of the SAR system no longer invariant, and the imaging result distort seriously and dissimilarly. In order to solve this problem the geometric model of the SA-BiSAR is established in this paper at first. Then based on the analysis to cause the image distortion, a correction method for bistatic SAR distortion named Inverse-Projection is brought up. The simulation results demonstrate that this method can work well for spaceborne/airborne configuration.

Abstract:For parallel bistatic forward-looking synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging, the instantaneous slant range is a double-square-root expression due to the separate transmitter-receiver system form. The hyperbolic approximation provides a feasible solution to convert the dual square-root expression into a single-square-root expression. However, some high-order terms of the range Taylor expansion have not been considered during the slant range approximation procedure in existing methods, and therefore, inaccurate phase compensation occurs. To obtain a more accurate compensation result, an improved hyperbolic approximation range form with high-order terms is proposed. Then, a modified omega-K algorithm based on the new slant range form is adopted for parallel bistatic forward-looking SAR imaging. Several simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed imaging algorithm.

Abstract:With appropriate geometry configurations, bistatic Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) can break through the limitations of monostatic SAR for forward-looking imaging. This paper develops an extended nonlinear Chirp Scaling imaging algorithm for translational variant BFSAR. The method utilizes a point target reference spectrum of generalized Loffeld's bistatic formula (GLBF). Without bistatic deformation term, GLBF is the latest development of Loffeld's bistatic formula. After an azimuth frequency transformation in 2-D frequency domain, the azimuth spatial variation is removed. Then through a fourth-order frequency domain filtering, the algorithm can consider the quadratic variance term of the range frequency modulated rate and the linear term of the tertiary coupling phase term along cross-track direction. In addition, by a fourth-order nonlinear Chirp Scaling equalization operation, the algorithm can finish the correction of quadratic range cell migration in terms of range. The result of this paper can be used for forward-looking reconnaissance, guidance and so on.

Abstract:The paper concentrates on image formation method for the practical forward-looking bistatic SAR (FL-BiSAR). In the FL-BiSAR configuration presented in the paper, the transmitter operates in the broadside mode, while the receiver is dynamic toward the target. In practical applications, however, the platforms cannot maintain constant velocity or move with acceleration. Considering the influence to form image, the actual aperture is split into subapertures. It is reasonably assumed the platforms move with constant acceleration vector in a subaperture when the subaperture is small enough. The equivalent bistatic squint range model incorporating three-dimensional acceleration and velocity is deduced. Based on this model, an improved CS algorithm with new phase compensation factors for FL-BiSAR is proposed. The simulation results show that the imaging quality processed by the proposed method is close to the value of the BP algorithm.

Abstract:Spaceborne-airborne hybrid bistatic SAR is translational variant bistatic SAR.So the traditional algorithms are no longer suitable any more.An imaging algorithm is proposed in this paper,which suitable for Spaceborne-airborne hybrid bistatic SAR.The main idea of this method is that:decomposing the imaging space into several linearity regions,and expanding the range history in space domain in every region;find the differences of ehco sinals between reference point and other points in the regions,which can be used to reduce the computational cost.Then SIFFT is used to correcting the RM,after that the phenomenon of non-uniformly-spaced is analyzed and corrected.At last the final imaging is finished using range-dividing,and the validity of this algorithm is prooved.

Abstract:Seeing that the strip mode of bistatic SAR which the platforms of transmitters and receivers are flying parallel at a constant speed, an improved bistatic SAR imaging algorithm is proposed. The 2-D transfer function of the bistatic SAR is obtained. Azimuth position distortion along range existing in the original alogrithm is corrected by mapping from scene coordinate to azimuth-slant distance coordinate. Bistatic SAR date can still be processed by a mono-static SAR processor.The efficaciousness of the proposed algorithm is verified through point target simulations. The proposed algorithm can perform range cell migration correction accurately without any interpolation, so it is suitable for fast parallel processing.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of bistatic SAR geometry model, bistatic SAR echoed signal is modeled in the double range variables domain in this paper, and the relationship between the double range variable domain and the single range variable domain is established. Then a range-dependent Doppler algorithm for imaging processing airborne bistatic SAR raw data of the translationally invariant configuration is derived, and the effect of error of the algorithm is analyzed by simulating. The algorithm is also tested with real data, and the advantage of the algorithm is proved by the comparison with bistatic SAR traditional RD algorithm.
