Abstract:Absolute rotation and translation matrixes from unconstrained movements of multiple 2D coplanar planes are converted to relative ones respective to the reference view of the camera. A virtual 3D object is simulated using the reference position of the plane and the relative matrixes. It avoids the shortcoming , which movements of multiple 2D coplanar planes are performed by special equipments in order to compute successfully parameters of camera, of traditional 3D simulation. A calibration method based on the principle including pinhole model and nonlinear model is applied to the constructed 3D object and the simulated result shown that the proposal method has higher accuracy.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel method to easily conduct the extrinsic calibration between a camera and a 3D LIDAR. By taking advantage of orthogonal trihedrons which are ubiquitous in structured environments, our method makes it convenient for a mobile robot to collect the data needed for calibration. The proposed method estimates the relative position of the sensors by first determining the pose of each plane of the trihedron in two acquisitions and then solving a planarity-constrained optimization problem. The algorithm is validated first by performing experiments on simulated data and investigating its sensitivity to noise. Moreover, we carry out a calibration for a real 3D LIDAR–camera system and further apply the calibration results to render 3D points with pixels' colors. The colored 3D points visually validate the effectiveness of our method.

Abstract:LiDAR-camera calibration is a precondition for many multi-sensor systems that fuse data from LiDAR and camera. However, the constraint from common field of view and the requirement for time synchronization make the calibration a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel LiDAR-camera calibration method aiming to eliminate these two constraints. Specifically, we capture a scan of 3-D LiDAR when both the environment and the sensors are stationary, then move the camera to reconstruct the 3-D environment using the sequentially obtained images. Finally, we align 3-D visual points to the laser scan based on a tightly couple graph optimization method to calculate the extrinsic parameter between LiDAR and camera. Under this design, the configuration of these two sensors is free from the common field-of-view constraint due to the extended view from the moving camera. In addition, we also eliminate the requirement for time synchronization as we only use the single scan of laser data when the sensors are stationary. We theoretically derive the conditions of minimal observability for our method and prove that the accuracy of calibration is improved by collecting more observations from multiple scattered calibration targets. In addition, the proposed method is beneficial to not only plane measurement error-based calibration targets, such as chessboards, but also other point measurement error-based calibration targets, such as boxes and polygonal boards. We validate our method on both simulation and real-world data sets. Experiments show that our method achieves higher accuracy than other comparable methods, which is in accordance with our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:LiDAR-camera calibration is a precondition for many heterogeneous systems that fuse data from LiDAR and camera. However, the constraint from the common field of view and the requirement for strict time synchronization make the calibration a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a hybrid LiDAR-camera calibration method aiming to solve these two difficulties. The configuration between LiDAR and camera is free from their common field of view as we move the camera to cover the scenario observed by LiDAR. 3D visual reconstruction of the environment can be achieved from the sequential visual images obtained by the moving camera, which later can be aligned with the single 3D laser scan captured when both the scene and the equipment are stationary. Under this design, our method can further get rid of the influence from time synchronization between LiDAR and camera. Moreover, the extended field of view obtained by the moving camera can improve the calibration accuracy. We derive the conditions of minimal observability for our method and discuss the influence on calibration accuracy from different placements of chessboards, which can be utilized as a guideline for designing high-accuracy calibration procedures. We validate our method on both simulation platform and real-world datasets. Experiments show that our method can achieve higher accuracy than other comparable methods.

Abstract:LiDAR-camera intrinsic and extrinsic parameters calibration is a prerequisite for LiDAR-camera sensor suite in the cooperative vehicle-infrastructure system or autonomous driving system. However, the calibration of LiDAR-camera is not trivial in some special scenes such as traffic scenes since the traditional target-based calibration methods are subject to the road condition. Moreover, the changing intrinsic parameters of the camera owing to focusing also pose unique challenges to such calibration tasks. Hence, a novel targetless method that jointly performs the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters calibration of LiDAR and camera sensor suite is proposed in this paper. The 2D and 3D features are collected from color images and point cloud respectively. The distance transform image is obtained from a 2D feature map and used as a reprojection error energy function for optimization. Alternatively, the observability of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters in our calibration system is theoretically verified, and the proposed method is tested in simulation and real-world scenes. Experiment results show that the method has better robustness and accuracy than other targetless calibration methods.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel way to address the extrinsic calibration problem for a system composed of a 3D LIDAR and a camera. The relative transformation between the two sensors is calibrated via a nonlinear least squares (NLS) problem, which is formulated in terms of the geometric constraints associated with a trihedral object. Precise initial estimates of NLS are obtained by dividing it into two sub-problems that are solved individually. With the precise initializations, the calibration parameters are further refined by iteratively optimizing the NLS problem. The algorithm is validated on both simulated and real data, as well as a 3D reconstruction application. Moreover, since the trihedral target used for calibration can be either orthogonal or not, it is very often present in structured environments, making the calibration convenient.

Abstract:Stereo vision has been studied for decades as a fundamental problem in the field of computer vision. In recent years, computer vision and image processing with a large field of view, especially using omnidirectional vision and panoramic images, has been receiving increasing attention. An important problem for stereo vision is calibration. Although various kinds of calibration methods for omnidirectional cameras are proposed, most of them are limited to calibrate catadioptric cameras or fish-eye cameras and cannot be applied directly to multi-camera systems. In this work, we propose an easy calibration method with closed-form initialization and iterative optimization for omnidirectional multi-camera systems. The method only requires image pairs of the 2D target plane in a few different views. A method based on the spherical camera model is also proposed for rectifying omnidirectional stereo pairs. Using real data captured by Ladybug3, we carry out some experiments, including stereo calibration, rectification and 3D reconstruction. Statistical analyses and comparisons of the experimental results are also presented. As the experimental results show, the calibration results are precise and the effect of rectification is promising.

Abstract:Mobile robotic drilling for flight control surface assembly at multiple stations demands high positioning accuracy of the equipped industrial robot. However, disturbances, arising from movement from station to station, significantly deteriorate the positioning accuracy. This paper proposes a novel in-process robot base frame calibration method with a 2D vision system. A proposal layout of flight control surface assembly, the developed mobile robotic drilling system, and the 2D vision system are first introduced. Then an iterative measurement scheme is proposed to eliminate measurement errors induced by non-perpendicularity and erroneous object distance during 2D vision-based positioning of preset reference holes. In order to obtain the third-dimension Cartesian coordinates of the reference holes, depth control with autofocus is achieved by using a new sharpness function. Based on the acquired Cartesian coordinates of the reference holes in the robot base frame, and their counterparts measured in advance in the world coordinate system, the description of the robot base frame with respect to the world coordinate system can be obtained with least-squares fitting. Numerical experiments show that depth control with autofocus contributes to enhanced accuracy of robot base frame calibration. Experiments performed on the developed mobile drilling system indicate that the maximum positioning error is about 0.6 mm with the proposed calibration method. Since position errors of drilled fastener holes will be further measured and compensated for based on the 2D vision system, the proposed in-process robot base frame calibration method is effective.

Abstract:In the large-scale vision measurement of the industrial field, it needs to not only build the high quality image acquisition system, but also calibrate the camera precisely. This paper proposes a camera calibration method based on 3D target, which consists of multiple planes with large viewing angle and range. Based on Zhang's calibration method, multiple intermediate coordinate systems are used to unify the vision sensor to the preset global coordinate system. The singular value decomposition method is adopted to solve the rotation matrix, when the external parameters are fused. Numerical experiments show that this method has high precision and stability.

Abstract:Background Camera calibration is a key process in optical deformation measurement techniques, like close-range photogrammetry and digital image correlation (DIC). Traditionally, an expensive calibration board with precisely machined feature points is employed in camera calibration. Low-precision calibration boards will lead to unstable camera parameters and worse length measurement accuracy (the relative measurement accuracy high than 0.1%). Objective To introduce camera calibration methods capable of achieving high measurement accuracy even with low-precision calibration boards, and give practices guide on selecting suitable calibration methods and judging calibration results. Methods Three calibration methods are introduced and discussed. In the iterative board-points method, all the feature points on the calibration board are flexible. The coordinates of all the feature points and camera parameters are iteratively updated and solved simultaneously. In the fixing 3-points method, three feature points on the calibration boards are selected and the distances between them are measured precisely; the locations of these points are fixed in the optimization process. Both the simulation experiments and the real experiments were carried out to study the performance of the three calibration methods. Results Experimental results showed that both the iterative board-points method and the fixing 3-points method can effectively improve the accuracy of calculated camera parameters. Compared with the iterative board-points method, the fixing 3-points method restores the calibration board more precisely, as well as showing improved reproducibility and higher measurement accuracy. The relative accuracy of 3D distance measurement is also increased from 0.1% to 0.01 %, even using a low-precision paper calibration board. Conclusions High measurement accuracy can be obtained using the fixing 3-points calibration method, even with a low-precision calibration board. This will decrease the cost and expand the application of optical measurement, especially in large structure deformation measurement.
Accurate Intrinsic Calibration Of Depth Camera With Cuboids

Abstract:Due to the low precision, the consumer-grade depth sensor is often calibrated jointly with a color camera, and the joint calibration sometimes presents undesired interactions. In this paper, we propose a novel method to carry out the high-accuracy intrinsic calibration of depth sensors merely by the depth camera, in which the traditional calibration rig, checker-board pattern, is replaced with a set of cuboids with known sizes, and the objective function for calibration is based on the length, width, and height of cuboids and its angle between the neighboring surfaces, which can be directly and robustly calculated from the depth-map. We experimentally evaluate the accuracy of the calibrated depth camera by measuring the angles and sizes of cubic object, and it is empirically shown that the resulting calibration accuracy is higher than that in the state-of-the-art calibration procedures, making the commodity depth sensors applicable to more interesting application scenarios such as 3D measurement and shape modeling etc.

Abstract:Aiming at the camera calibration in vision navigation system of mobile robot,this paper proposes an efficient method of camera calibration.The radial distortion and tangential distortion is taken into account.Hough transform is applied to extract the checkboard corners,and initial values of camera parameters are obtained.Levenberg Marquardt algorithm is used for nonlinear iteration optimization.The corners are reprojected to the rectangular checkboard,the corners extracted are compared with Hough transform,and the causes of error are analyzed.The results show that this method of anti-noise ability is strong,and the experimental conditions are relatively low.The precision completely satisfies requirement of actual navigation,which is suitable for camera calibration of mobile robot.

Abstract:Precise calibration of a binocular vision system is the foundation of binocular vision measurement. In this paper, we propose a highly precise and robust binocular camera calibration method, which is devoted to minimize the error between the geometric relation of 3D reconstructed feature points and the ground truth, such as adjacent distance error, collinear error, and right-angle error. In addition, the reprojection error and epipolar are introduced to satisfy the homography relation and epipolar geometry theory better. We optimize all intrinsic parameters, extrinsic parameters, and distortion parameters to minimize the objective function, which is the sum of a series of nonlinear least squares terms. Levenberg-Marquardt iterative algorithm is used to find the optimal solution of the camera parameters. To test the precision and robustness of the proposed method, both actual measurement experiments and Gauss noise-adding experiments are carried out. The experimental results show that compared with the other two calibration methods in the contrast experiment, the distance measurement error, collinear error, and right-angle error are reduced dramatically. It is noticeable that in Gauss noise-adding experiments, the calibration parameters estimated by the proposed method are more stable.

Abstract:As the basis of multi-sensor fusion, accurate extrinsic calibration among multi-sensors is vital for hetero-geneous information fusion. However, most existing methods only focus on the calibration between two specific heteroge-neous sensors, such as camera-LiDAR, LiDAR-thermal, and etc. which may cause inevitable accumulation when applied to a multi-sensor system. To address this problem, a novel calibration target and a high-accuracy method are proposed to simultaneously calibrate the intrinsic and extrinsic of a 3D LiDAR, a thermal camera and a visible camera without any user intervention. The proposed method only relies on one calibration board, to calibrate all the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters in one-step, without any strict pose requirement or long-time optimization. Furthermore, 2D-3D corresponding features can be extracted with higher precision by considering sensor model, comparing to the common feature extraction methods. Experiments with Velodyne VLP-16 LiDAR, ZED camera and D843NT thermal camera demonstrate that the proposed method can complete calibration among three of them automatically. Finally, this paper also presents a target-based method of uniformly expressing the calibration errors among multi-sensor system, with a competitive performance against most state-of-the-art methods.

Abstract:A calibration method was presented for a three dimensional positioning system. Three high -resolution linear CCD (charge coupled device) cameras with wide -angle lens were used to provide a large field of view, but image errors due to large lens distortions occured as well. A modified camera model was used to correct the distortions. The proposed calibration procedure consists of two steps to correct the lens distortion and to avoid non -orthogonality problems arising in the ordinary direct linear translation (DLT) method. The performance of the calibration procedure was tested with real images, with a 1‰ accuracy achieved. The method can be extended to various photogrammetry applications.

Abstract:Sensor-based environmental perception is a crucial step for autonomous driving systems, for which an accurate calibration between multiple sensors plays a critical role. For the calibration of LiDAR and camera, the existing method is generally to calibrate the intrinsic of the camera first and then calibrate the extrinsic of the LiDAR and camera. If the camera's intrinsic is not calibrated correctly in the first stage, it isn't easy to calibrate the LiDAR-camera extrinsic accurately. Due to the complex internal structure of the camera and the lack of an effective quantitative evaluation method for the camera's intrinsic calibration, in the actual calibration, the accuracy of extrinsic parameter calibration is often reduced due to the tiny error of the camera's intrinsic parameters. To this end, we propose a novel target-based joint calibration method of the camera intrinsic and LiDAR-camera extrinsic parameters. Firstly, we design a novel calibration board pattern, adding four circular holes around the checkerboard for locating the LiDAR pose. Subsequently, a cost function defined under the reprojection constraints of the checkerboard and circular holes features is designed to solve the camera's intrinsic parameters, distortion factor, and LiDAR-camera extrinsic parameter. In the end, quantitative and qualitative experiments are conducted in actual and simulated environments, and the result shows the proposed method can achieve accuracy and robustness performance. Abstract:Accurate and robust calibration of intrinsic and extrinsic parameters is crucial to multi-sensor simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) systems. However, extrinsic calibration of heterogeneous sensors is challenging owing to the differences in data acquisition methods. Therefore, we propose a more robust and convenient method to calibrate the intrinsic parameters for the camera and extrinsic parameters for cameras and light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors based on a 3D checkerboard. We tested the algorithm in simulation and real-world environments. Experiments in the simulation environment showed that our proposed method had similar accuracy as the state-of-the-art calibration method velo2cam_calibration.11https://github.com/beltransen/velo2cam_calibration. However, our proposed algorithm had less interaction and was more automatic. The real-world test also confirmed the results of our proposed method. Thus, the proposed method is a convenient means to calibrate intrinsic parameters for cameras, and extrinsic parameters for cameras and LiDAR sensors based on a 3D checkerboard.

Abstract:In the field of three-dimensional (3-D) metrology based on fringe projection profilometry (FPP), accurate camera calibration is an essential task and a primary requirement. In order to improve the accuracy of camera calibration, the calibration board or calibration target needs to be manufactured with high accuracy, and the marker points in calibration image require to be positioned with high accuracy. This paper presents an improved camera calibration method by simultaneously optimizing the camera parameters and target geometry. Specifically, a set of regularly distributed target markers with rich coded concentric ring pattern is first displayed on a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. Then, the sub-pixel edges of all coded bands radial straight lines are automatically located at several positions of the LCD screen. Finally, the sub-pixel edge point set is mapped into parameter space to form a line set, and the intersection of the lines is defined as the center pixel coordinates of each target point to complete the camera calibration. The simulation and experimental results verify that the proposed camera calibration method is feasible and easy to operate, which can essentially eliminate the perspective transformation error to improve the accuracy of camera parameters and target geometry.

Abstract:Cameras are widely used in many scenes such as robot positioning and unmanned driving, in which the camera calibration is a major task in this field. The interactive camera calibration method based on a plane board is becoming popular due to its stability and handleability. However, most methods choose suggestions subjectively from a fixed pose dataset, which is error-prone and limited for different camera models. In addition, these methods do not provide clear guidelines on how to place the board in the specified pose. This paper proposes a new interactive calibration method, named ‘Calibration Venus’, including two main parts: pose search and pose decomposition. First, a pose search algorithm based on simulated annealing (SA) algorithm is proposed to select the optimal pose in the entire pose space. Second, an intuitive and easy-to-use user guidance method is designed to decompose the optimal pose into four sub-poses: translation, each rotation along X-, Y-, Z-axes. Thereby the users could follow the guide step by step to accurately complete the placement of the calibration board. Experimental results evaluated on simulated and real datasets show that the proposed method can reduce the difficulty of calibration, and improve the accuracy of calibration, as well as provide better guidance.

3D Radar and Camera Co-Calibration: A Flexible and Accurate Method for Target-based Extrinsic Calibration

Abstract:Advances in autonomous driving are inseparable from sensor fusion. Heterogeneous sensors are widely used for sensor fusion due to their complementary properties, with radar and camera being the most equipped sensors. Intrinsic and extrinsic calibration are essential steps in sensor fusion. The extrinsic calibration, independent of the sensor's own parameters, and performed after the sensors are installed, greatly determines the accuracy of sensor fusion. Many target-based methods require cumbersome operating procedures and well-designed experimental conditions, making them extremely challenging. To this end, we propose a flexible, easy-to-reproduce and accurate method for extrinsic calibration of 3D radar and camera. The proposed method does not require a specially designed calibration environment, and instead places a single corner reflector (CR) on the ground to iteratively collect radar and camera data simultaneously using Robot Operating System (ROS), and obtain radar-camera point correspondences based on their timestamps, and then use these point correspondences as input to solve the perspective-n-point (PnP) problem, and finally get the extrinsic calibration matrix. Also, RANSAC is used for robustness and the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) nonlinear optimization algorithm is used for accuracy. Multiple controlled environment experiments as well as real-world experiments demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy (AED error is 15.31 pixels and Acc up to 89\%) of the proposed method.
