Abstract:In this paper, we consider asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds endowed with a continuous metric and the metric is smooth away from a compact subset with certain conditions. If the metric is Lipschitz and the scalar curvature is nonnegative away from a closed subset with (n - 1)-dimensional Hausdorff measure zero, then we prove that the ADM mass of each end is nonnegative. Furthermore, if the ADM mass of some end is zero, then we prove that the manifold is isometric to the Euclidean space. The Hausdorff measure condition is optimal, which confirms a conjecture of Lee in 2013. The proof of the nonnegativity is based on a smoothing argument with some new estimates such as a L-1-scalar curvature approximation estimates. The proof of the rigidity relies on the RCD theory where we show that the manifold has nonnegative Ricci curvature in RCD sense. The idea involving RCD theory in the proof turns out to be much more suitable in the study of the rigidity for continuous metrics. Furthermore, our result generalizes the result of Lee and LeFloch (Commun Math Phys 339(1):99-120, 2015) from spin to non-spin.

Abstract:By studying a fully nonlinear flow deforming conformal metrics on compact and connected manifold, we prove that for $\lambda < 1$, any metric g with its modified Schouten tensor $A^\lambda_{g}\in \Gamma_k^-$ always can be deformed in a natural way to a conformal metric with constant $\sigma_k$-scalar curvature at exponential rate.

Abstract:In this article we first show that any finite cover of the moduli space of closed Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $g\geq 2$ does not admit any Riemannian metric $ds^2$ of nonnegative scalar curvature such that $ds^2 \succ ds_{T}^2$ where $ds_{T}^2$ is the Teichm\"uller metric. Our second result is the proof that any cover $M$ of the moduli space $\mathbb{M}_{g}$ of a closed Riemann surface $S_{g}$ does not admit any complete Riemannian metric of uniformly positive scalar curvature in the quasi-isometry class of the Teichm\"uller metric, which implies a conjecture of Farb-Weinberger.

Abstract:Let V be an open manifold with complete nonnegatively curved metric such that the normal sphere bundle to a soul has no section. We prove that the souls of nearby nonnegatively curved metrics on V are smoothly close. Combining this result with some topological properties of pseudoisotopies we show that for many V the space of complete nonnegatively curved metrics has infinite higher homotopy groups.

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between geometry and topology is a central theme in Riemannian geometry. We establish two results on the fundamental groups of open (complete and noncompact) $n$-manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature and linear volume growth. First, we show that the fundamental group of such a manifold contains a subgroup $\mathbb{Z}^k$ of finite index, where $0\le k\le n-1$. Second, we prove that if the Ricci curvature is positive everywhere, then the fundamental group is finite. The proofs are based on an analysis of the equivariant asymptotic geometry of successive covering spaces and a plane/halfplane rigidity result for RCD spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove a global rigidity theorem for negatively curved Finsler metrics on a compact manifold of dimension it greater than or equal to 3. We show that for such a Finsler manifold, if the flag curvature is a scalar function on the tangent bundle, then the Finsler metric is of Randers type. We also study the case when the Finsler metric is locally projectively flat.

Abstract:Extending Aubin's construction of metrics with constant negative scalar curvature, we prove that every $n$-dimensional closed manifold admits a Riemannian metric with constant negative scalar-Weyl curvature, that is $R+t|W|, t\in\mathbb{R}$. In particular, there are no topological obstructions for metrics with $\varepsilon$-pinched Weyl curvature and negative scalar curvature.

Abstract:In this article, we prove that if the Ricci tensor of a compact nonpositively curved manifold M n is nowhere negative definite, then it admits local flat factors. To be more precise, let U C M be the open subset where the Ricci tensor has maximum rank r. Then for any connected component U a of U, its universal cover U a is isometric to R n―r ×N r a , where n r a is a nonpositively curved manifold with negative Ricci curvature. In particular, if M n is compact, nonpositively curved without Euclidean de Rham factor, and both the manifold and the metric are real analytic, then its Ricci tensor must be negative definite somewhere.

Abstract:We consider the sets of negatively associated (NA) and negatively correlated (NC) distributions as subsets of the space $\mathcal{M}$ of all probability distributions on $\mathbb{R}^n$, in terms of their relative topological structures within the topological space of all measures on a given measurable space. We prove that the class of NA distributions has a non-empty interior with respect to the topology of the total variation metric on $\mathcal{M}$. We show however that this is not the case in the weak topology (i.e. the topology of convergence in distribution), unless the underlying probability space is finite. We consider both the convexity and the connectedness of these classes of probability measures, and also consider the two classes on their (widely studied) restrictions to the Boolean cube in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Abstract:Using minimal hypersurfaces, we obtain topological obstructions to admitting complete metrics with positive scalar curvature on a given class of non-compact n-manifolds with n less than 8. We show that the Liouville theorem for a locally conformally flat n-manifold of non-negative scalar curvature follows from the impossibility of there being a positive scalar curvature metric on its connect sum with the n-torus. With the recent work of Chodosh-Li, the Liouville theorem is now proved in all remaining cases. Finally, using MOTS instead of minimal hypersurfaces, we show an Initial Data Set version of these results with the Dominant Energy Scalar appearing instead of positive scalar curvature.

Abstract:We prove that closed manifolds admitting a generic metric whose sectional curvature is locally quasi-constant are graphs of space forms. In the more general setting of QC spaces where sets of isotropic points are arbitrary, under suitable positivity assumption and for torsion-free fundamental groups they are still diffeomorphic to connected sums of spherical space forms and spherical bundles over the circle.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we present finite topological type theorems for open manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature, under almost maximal local rewinding volume. Unlike previous related research, our theorems remove the constraints of sectional curvature or conjugate radius, which were crucial additional assumptions on metric regularity in prior results. Notably, our settings do not necessarily satisfy a triangle comparison of Toponogov type. In fact, the method we adopt also extends to many previous related studies.

Abstract:Galatius and Randal-Williams defined a topology on the set of closed submanifolds of ${\mathbb R}^n$. B\"okstedt and Madsen proved that a $C^1$-version of this topology is metrizable by showing that it is regular and second countable. Using that the scanning map of a topological sheaf on manifolds is an embedding, we give an explicit metric to the space considered by B\"okstedt and Madsen. Then, we compare this topology with the Fell topology and we use the Hausdorff distance to give another metric to the space of Galatius and Randal-Williams.

Abstract:We give examples of spin $4$-manifolds with boundary that do not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature and nonnegative mean curvature. These manifolds in fact have the stronger property that the conformal Laplacian with appropriate boundary conditions is never positive. The obstruction to the positivity of the conformal Laplacian is given by a real-valued $\xi$-invariant associated to the APS theorem for the twisted Dirac operator. We use analytic techniques related to the prescribed scalar curvature problem in conformal geometry to move beyond earlier work where the metric is a product near the boundary.
