Abstract:The floatover installation method is one of the two installation methods of the offshore platform topsides and is a much safe and efficient method for the mega integrated topsides. This paper presents a literature review on the research and technical challenges of floatover installations. Various floatover installation methods and concepts for the fixed and floating substructures with passive and active load transfer systems are reviewed, including the conventional single barge floatover installation, the T-barge floatover installation, the twin/dual floater floatover installation, and the dynamically positioning floatover installation. The exclusive mating units including the deck/leg mating units and the related guidelines are discussed. Investigations in respect of the in-site measurements, numerical modeling, and physical model tests are presented, following challenges and gaps between the practices and the research. Finally, further developing and refining modeling techniques are envisioned. This review aims to provide suggestions on research and development activities of floatover installation.

Abstract:Offshore oil and gas development plays an important part in the global energy sector. Offshore platforms and flexible pipes are the key equipments in the whole offshore oil and gas development system. Because of the randomness and uncertainty of wave and current loads in the ocean environment, the structural design and mechanical analysis of the marine equipment can be highly complicated. Therefore, this paper reviews the recent works of the theoretical model, numerical simulation, and experimental test in three research areas: hydrodynamic analysis of offshore platforms, structural mechanics analysis of flexible pipe and cable, and monitoring technology of offshore floating structures under marine loads. By analyzing their main research methods and key technical difficulties, this paper provides theoretical basis and technical support for the reliability engineering application of offshore platforms and flexible pipelines. Also, China is relatively backward in the design of marine floating platform, the design, analysis and testing of flexible pipeline and cable, as well as the marine equipment prototype monitoring technology research. Calling for breakthroughs at the earliest possible stage in the above fields, prime research should be focused on and strategic planning should be made to deal with "key areas and stranglehold problems". It is of great significance for the development of China's deep-sea energy and resource development of independent technology and on time to achieve the "carbon peak" national strategic objectives.

Abstract:Offshore platforms deal with challenges brought by the marine environment, providing workplaces for oil production, wind energy, and marine research. Offshore platforms play important roles in the ocean development. Although there are still challenges such as stability, control, and sensing technology, offshore platforms hold the potential to further improve their performance and application value with the continuous progress in technology. This paper presents a summary of the present research status within the domain of offshore platform studies, introducing different types of offshore platforms from the perspectives of their applications and basic structures. In terms of technology, this paper presents the technical aspects and architectural framework of offshore platforms. Additionally, the applications of offshore platforms are discussed. Comprehensive analysis indicates that offshore platforms exhibit strong adaptability and stability in marine environments. With the advancement of technologies, the reliability and performance of offshore platform are expected to improve in practical scenarios. This paper may offer a reference for the research of offshore platforms.
Long Pile Upending Lifting Study for Fixed Platform on Offshore Oil and Gas Field

Abstract:Fixed platform have been widely employed in the offshore oil and gas reservoirs development. Pile foundation reliability is critical for these platforms where drilling, production and other functions are integrated. The lifting operation for the long pile, being a key step in the jacket installation, has been considered for further developments. With deep water developments, the sizes and weights of long piles are reasonably bigger. The corresponding process and equipment employed are subsequently altered, which brings challenges to developing a cost-effective, easy-operable approach for lifting operation. In this paper, the technology for the offshore long pile upending lifting operation including pile feature, installation methodology, lifting rigging and analysis model, covering water depths ranging from shallow to near deep water zone (60-300 m water depth) has been suggested. In addition, the applicability of the adoptable novel approaches has been discussed considering the practical project experience.

Abstract:Marine resources and energy exploitation has driven the advancement of floating structures, e.g., the oil & gas platforms, the floaters to support floating wind turbines. Mooring systems, encompassing mooring lines and anchors, are adopted to position the floaters and restrict their motions due to the environmental loads. The evolving diversity of floating structures poses new challenges to mooring systems, needing to be summarized for further development. This review introduces the recent advancements in the research and application of mooring lines and anchors, and some crucial issues related to design and analysis are discussed. First, the applications of floating structures are reviewed, and different types of floaters are compared based on the characteristics. Subsequently, the mooring system classification and shared mooring line and anchor are reviewed and discussed, and then design principles and analysis methodologies of mooring systems are summarized. Furthermore, mooring line components are discussed, the modelling and analysis methods of mooring lines are introduced. A critical threat to mooring safety, seabed trenches, is scrutinized. Finally, various anchors are compared and summarized based on their capacities and installation methods. Some problems related to anchor long-term capacities are discussed. This review provides a guide on further research and applications of moorings and anchors, which targets to benefit more precise mooring and anchor design, potentially prompting significant cost reductions in the deployment of floating wind turbines.

Abstract:Using artificial island as a production platform is a common method to develop offshore oilfield with technology and equipment which used on land oilfield in China, it is a long-term, high efficient and low-cost development strategy of offshore Oilfield. However, there are some new challenges on the selection of artificial lift, such as intensive wellhead, limited space, complex well track and higher health safety environment requirement. For the project of Nanpu offshore oilfield, integration Gas-lift was selected as the artificial lifting method by consideration of the characters of artificial island and high gas oil ratio in Nanpu reservoir. In order to overcome the challenges mentioned above, the gas-lift design method was improved for the highly deviated well, many down hole tools such as packers were invented to apply to highly deviated well, several gas-lift production strings were researched to be used in different situation. The new reliability technology that has 4 grades’ control system was implemented to ensure the process safety. This project ultimately achieved a successful result by all implementations. Over ten years of operation, the integration gas-lift platform has built 136 wells and produced 1,500,000 ton's oil, maximum production is 1,200 ton per day. There is no accident happened on the platform. Moreover, this practice provides a good example for new long-term, high efficient and low-cost development strategy, it also can be an invaluable reference for other offshore oilfields.

Abstract:Floating platforms are an economical option for offshore energy harvesting in deep water sea. Lightweight design and structural stability are most important concerns in the design of floating foundations under the premise of ensuring load-bearing capacity. Topology optimization has proven to be a successful method for determining the optimal material distribution with the desired stiffness, strength, and robustness of the subjected design structure. In this paper, a novel lightweight multifunctional offshore floating platform design is proposed utilizing the density-based topology optimization method for the combined utilization of wind-solar-wave energy. Firstly, based on the extreme sea conditions in the South China Sea, the minimum compliance subject to the prescribed volume percentage is formulated and an innovative platform structure is carried out by interoperating the variable density method in the ANSYS AQWA module. Secondly, the optimized floating platform structure was strength-checked based on the maximum von Mises stresses under extreme loading conditions specified in the DNV code. The total mass of the novel optimized structure is 40.82% of the primary structure. Moreover, the platform stiffness and durability have been significantly enhanced.

Abstract:The bucket foundation platform is a new-style platform used in offshore oil exploitation. The stability is one of the most important issues for the platform. Lowering and raising stability is analyzed theoretically. Furthermore, the results of model test and simulation are provided. Experiments and analysis results show that lowering and raising stability mainly rests with the platform underwater depth, structural characteristics, water entry angle, etc., and has scarcely any connection with the platform angles, to certain extent. As underwater depth increases, metacenter height increases, but water entry angle decreases, so the platforms allowable swing angles also decrease. In view of the above, the lowering and raising stability of the bucket foundation platform should be evaluated synthetically.

Abstract:Float-over method offers an efficient, reliable, and practical installation scenario for large-scale offshore topsides. It is, however, highly sensitive to marine environmental conditions and necessitates comprehensive pre-planning. Conventional deterministic approaches methodologies exhibit shortcomings in achieving a cost-effective and time-efficient float-over design, thereby necessitating a comprehensive reconsideration. This study aims to develop a reliability-based methodology for float-over analysis of super-heavy offshore topsides. Incorporating diverse geometric and mechanical limit state functions, the permissible weather window is determined by use of Monte-Carlo Simulation. This methodology leverages the data set generated based on nonlinear coupled multi-body hydrodynamic simulation of the float-over operations. The presented idea provides a decision-making platform that integrates safety and efficiency considerations. The float-over design is optimized utilizing the developed approach and some recommendations are made to enhance applicable codes and guidelines. To reduce the computational expenses, the application of the importance sampling technique is subsequently proposed. Long-term planning of float-over installation is derived finally, optimizing operational time and cost while keeping risks as low as reasonably practical. In conclusion, it is crucial to establish a reliability-based framework for scheduling weather-sensitive offshore construction projects.

Abstract:Floatover method has been widely applied in the installation of both fixed and floating platforms, which has the advantages of high efficiency, economy, and large lifting capacity compared with other installation methods. Few studies could numerically and experimentally simulate the continuous load transfer process which shows significant nonstationary characteristics. This paper conducts experimental research on the nonstationary mating process of the floatover system. The ballasting system based on the control logic of feedback adjustment is developed to adjust the draft and inertia properties of the floatover vessel, and the validation tests are conducted to verify the feasibility and reliability of the system. The load buffer devices are designed carefully and the piecewise linear spring simulation method is applied to simulate the nonlinear stiffnesses of the elastic cushion. The stationary model for 0% and 100% load transfer stages and the nonstationary model for continuous load transfer process are established and tested in the model tests, and the dynamic responses are analyzed by using statistical and spectral methods respectively. Stationary model tests indicate that the spectral characteristics and distribution of LMU (Leg Mating Unit) dynamic loads in transverse symmetric positions are similar, and the statistical values are also relatively close under different wave heads. The nonstationary dynamic responses are segmented according to the physical process, time-frequency spectrum and piecewise statistics diagram to find the critical stage. The greatest dynamic load occurs in the intermediate stage of the mating process when the larger stiffness of the LMU acts and the steel-to-steel contact will also occur.

Abstract:In the present paper,two fundamental forms of offshore oil storage system,dry and wet,are analyzed and compared by consulting agreat deal of academic literatures and web resources.The development history of oil-water displacement underwater oil storage technology is reviewed in brief.The basic information of 26 wet storage structures installed in foreign offshore oil fields are listed.The main features of concrete wet-storage platform are introduced by taking Hebron platform as an example.Some critical technical problems involved in oil-water displacement storage system are analyzed and summarized.At the end of the paper,a new deep-water Spar Drilling Production Storage Offloading platform is proposed,and the oil storage/offloading process of SDPSO storage system and corresponding experimental and numerical studies are introduced.

Abstract:Offshore green hydrogen emerges as a guiding light in the global pursuit of environmental sustainability and net-zero objectives. The burgeoning expansion of offshore wind power faces significant challenges in grid integration. This avenue towards generating offshore green hydrogen capitalises on its ecological advantages and substantial energy potential to efficiently channel offshore wind power for onshore energy demands. However, a substantial research void exists in efficiently integrating offshore wind electricity and green hydrogen. Innovative designs of offshore hydrogen platforms present a promising solution to bridge the gap between offshore wind and hydrogen integration. Surprisingly, there is a lack of commercially established offshore platforms dedicated to the hydrogen industry. However, the wealth of knowledge from oil and gas platforms contributes valuable insights to hydrogen platform design. Diverging from the conventional decentralised hydrogen units catering to individual turbines, this study firstly introduces a pioneering centralised Offshore Green Hydrogen Platform (OGHP), which seamlessly integrates modular production, storage, and offloading modulars. The modular design of facilitates scalability as wind capacity increases. Through a detailed case study centred around a 100-Megawatt floating wind farm, the design process of offshore green hydrogen modulars and its floating sub-structure is elucidated. Stability analysis and hydrodynamic analysis are performed to ensure the safety of the OGHP under the operation conditions. The case study will enhance our understanding OGHP and its modularised components. The conceptual design of modular OGHP offers an alternative solution to “Power-to-X” for offshore renewable energy sector.

Abstract:Offshore resource assessment with lidars on floating platforms is a flexible and particularly cost-effective alternative to the conventional meteorological mast solution, that is considered as onshore state-of-the-art transferred to offshore sites, and may enable better and more complete wind resource assessments for the growing offshore wind sector. Wind lidar technology, and remote sensing in general, has already been proven to be a very promising technology for resource assessment and power performance testing onshore. For offshore applications and on floating platforms in particular, the motions from the floating base have to be considered in addition, affecting the wind measurements significantly and causing systematic measurement errors. We have studied the motions and the corresponding influences on lidar measurements generated by different possible offshore platforms – vessels or buoys – both in detailed simulations as well as first validation experiments. In addition to this, we have developed motion compensation algorithms that allow to correct the affected measurements and retrieve the undisturbed wind data. The motions considered and studied comprise rotations as well as translations in all six degrees of freedom. For the evaluation of the motion-affected and corrected wind data in this paper, special attention is paid to the measurement of turbulence as well as extreme wind events. The research question to be answered is if a lidar device placed on a floating platform is capable of measuring more or less the same statistics of extreme wind events as a fixed lidar device. Quantities to be investigated are: the turbulence intensity as well as the statistics of maximum wind speed values within a 10-min period, but also wind speed increments on different time scales. At this, obviously two issues are to be discussed – the influence of the lidar measurement principle on the recording of extreme wind events, and the additional impact of the superimposed motions of the floating platform.
Analysis of Hydrodynamic Performance and Mooring Dynamic Response of Offshore Dual-Module Floating Photovoltaic Platform

Abstract:Floating photovoltaic (FPV) systems, as an emerging solar photovoltaic technology, have great development prospects. In order to investigate the adaptability of offshore multi-connected floating photovoltaic platforms under specific sea conditions, hydrodynamic performance research was conducted. A frequency domain hydrodynamic performance analysis of the floating photovoltaic platform was performed using the hydrodynamic analysis software AQWA, which includes platform RAOs (Response Amplitude Operators), hydrodynamic interaction characteristics, and shielding effects. Using the hydrodynamic analysis software Orcaflex, a time domain analysis was performed to investigate the influence of hydrodynamic interactions on the motion response of a multi-connected photovoltaic platform under extreme sea conditions. To ensure model consistency between the AQWA and Orcaflex, the platform model was simulated with six degrees of freedom for free decay under time domain analysis. In shallow water environments, the response generated by mooring dynamics cannot be ignored. In order to investigate the effect of mooring dynamics on the platform in shallow water environments, sensitivity analysis was performed for two cases: considering mooring dynamics and not considering mooring dynamics. Finally, the influence of the wave direction on the floating photovoltaic platform was investigated under normal operating sea conditions. The results show that the peaks of the platform RAOs are mainly clustered in the low frequency range. Hydrodynamic interaction on the two-body platform inhibits the platform motion response. Mooring dynamics have little effect on platform motion response in shallow water environments. Waves in the 60° direction exert the greatest force on the mooring chain and should be avoided as much as possible in practical engineering.

Abstract:In this paper, the fluid–structure interaction of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) platforms under complex ocean conditions is investigated using OpenFOAM and in-house developed models. Two types of FOWT platform, i.e., a semi-submersible platform and a barge platform, are studied for their dynamic responses to either wave or current. The results reveal that a semi-submersible platform exhibits larger cross-flow motion and lock-in phenomenon, while a barge platform experiences smaller motion with no significant lock-in within the velocity range examined. The combined wave–current conditions are further studied for the semi-submersible platform, with different angles between wave and current, the current speeds, and wave parameters. Unlike other investigations focusing on colinear wave–current interaction, in which the waves usually mitigate vortex-induced motion (VIM); here, we find that waves might lead to an enhanced VIM with a large angle between current and wave. The evaluation on the interaction effect factor shows that the largest wave height in the lock-in region does not lead to the most dangerous scenario, herein, the largest platform motion. Instead, a smaller wave height with a large wave period can induce even larger motion.

Abstract:The hydrodynamic performance of the floating foundation for offshore wind turbines is essential to its stability and energy harvesting. A semi-submersible platform with an integral heave plate is proposed in order to reduce the vertical motion responses. In this study, we compare the heave, pitch, and roll free decay motions of the new platform with a WindFloat-type platform based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations. The differences of the linear and quadratic damping properties between these platforms are revealed. Then, a FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) model with the consideration of fluid viscosity effects is set up to investigate the performance of the new platform under storm and operational conditions. The time-domain responses, motion spectra, and the mooring-tension statistics of these two platforms are evaluated. It is found that the integral heave plate can increase the viscous hydrodynamic damping, significantly decrease the heave and pitch motion responses, and increase the safety of the mooring cables, especially for the storm condition.

Abstract:The global push for clean energy has spurred interest in utilising the vast potential of the ocean, which covers two-thirds of the earth's surface. Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) system research has seen limited growth, but recent advancements in the domain of offshore engineering suggest that floating offshore platforms could efficiently adopt such technology for clean energy generation. One specific issue necessitating attention from researchers is to understand the hydrodynamics of floating offshore structures such as spar and semi-submersibles to support heat exchange systems and associated facilities. This paper aims to present a review of various floating offshore structures, intended for Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion and to discuss the methodology adopted for the experimental and numerical analysis, highlighting the modelling challenges and the key areas for further research. The dependence of moon pool and cold-water pipe (CWP) on the motion responses of floating structures are the focus of this study. The size and behaviour of CWP differ from the risers used in the case of conventional offshore structures, necessitating an elaborate investigation considering environmental loading and the interaction of its motion with the platform's motion. Deploying floating OTEC systems involves complex challenges requiring in-depth study of hydrodynamics, particularly the interactions between the supporting structure, cold water pipe, and moorings. This paper reviews the hydrodynamic behaviour of floating OTEC platforms and highlights the need for comprehensive modelling, coupled numerical methodologies, and experimental validations, emphasising the influence of CWP dynamics on platform stability and performance in normal and extreme oceanic conditions.
