Abstract:This paper elaborates the development of spatial structure in our country.Because the forms and types are colorful and incessantly innovating,it is necessary to divide spatial structure by component elements.After the 21th century,the development of our nation’s spatial structure comes into a new period that the application range and fields for spatial structure extend continuously.Besides the large-span public buildings such as gymnasiums and airports,there are extensive and innovative applications including large-scale railway stations,stations awning without column,bridges and high-rise buildings for spatial structure.About the international cooperation,it is suggested to have an open mind and optimistic view towards the fact that that architecture scheme for our nation’s spatial structures are frequently led by foreign companies.China is already a country with a great deal of the top of the world spatial structures,thus it is our responsibility to strive to create even better and advanced spatial structures.Some issues which we should pay more attention are pointed out.

Abstract:This paper describes the development history of spatial structures and classifies spatial structures into ancient spatial structures,modern spatial structures and contemporary spatial structures according to the development characteristic,types of form and the state of science and technology of spatial structures in all periods,points out factors that boost the development of spatial structures. The composing and classification of rigid spatial structures,flexible spatial structures and rigid-flexible combined spatial structures are presented and discussed. 38 types of spatial structures which have been applied in practical engineering are classified based on element composing,and the classification figure of spatial structures on the basis of element composing is clear and suitable.

Abstract:Based on the introduction of the concept of submerged plants, the researches of applied status and ecological function of submerged plants in landscape use are summarized. The paper also discusses the design, planting, maintenance and the control of submerged plants for landscape use, by giving the example of the landscape water body creation in the west line of West Lake in Hangzhou. The application value and existed problems of submerged plants used in China are indicated as well.

Abstract:Urban waterfronts are fascinating places,exhibiting both natural charm,usefulness for a vast array of human activities,as well as a rich heritage that generated significant tourist interest in some areas.On review of the waterfront development studies and urban development research both home and abroad,this article argues that a strong trend of urban waterfront development is recreation oriented,rather than business centered.This trend is in accordance with the humanist thinking among development paradigms.Thus,the authors of this study proposed the idea of urban waterfront recreational business district(RBD).Thirteen sites across the world were examined with field trip by at least one of the authors.The researchers summarized six issues that apply to the domestic waterfront RBD planning and development,which shares some commonality with China.

Abstract:Coastal land pressures due to urban population growth have seen various cities embrace the use of floating structures to extend their cities into their surrounding ocean space. Simultaneously, the need to go further into deeper waters to extract resources has also driven the development of innovative floating structures. This chapter introduces the developments in the area of predominantly static large scale floating structures. It begins with a review of the advantages of employing floating structures over traditional land reclamation technologies in availing habitable space; and the basic technical elements that underpin the technology. A brief history of the evolution of floating structures is then presented, before a survey of the examples of floating structures in a variety of uses and sites is ventured. Finally, the authors conclude with the ambitious and possible future uses of these large-scale floating structures in meeting our coming urban needs.

Abstract:Marine resources and energy exploitation has driven the advancement of floating structures, e.g., the oil & gas platforms, the floaters to support floating wind turbines. Mooring systems, encompassing mooring lines and anchors, are adopted to position the floaters and restrict their motions due to the environmental loads. The evolving diversity of floating structures poses new challenges to mooring systems, needing to be summarized for further development. This review introduces the recent advancements in the research and application of mooring lines and anchors, and some crucial issues related to design and analysis are discussed. First, the applications of floating structures are reviewed, and different types of floaters are compared based on the characteristics. Subsequently, the mooring system classification and shared mooring line and anchor are reviewed and discussed, and then design principles and analysis methodologies of mooring systems are summarized. Furthermore, mooring line components are discussed, the modelling and analysis methods of mooring lines are introduced. A critical threat to mooring safety, seabed trenches, is scrutinized. Finally, various anchors are compared and summarized based on their capacities and installation methods. Some problems related to anchor long-term capacities are discussed. This review provides a guide on further research and applications of moorings and anchors, which targets to benefit more precise mooring and anchor design, potentially prompting significant cost reductions in the deployment of floating wind turbines.

Abstract:Submerged Floating Tunnel (SFT) is a new type of transport structure. It is different from the general bridges and tunnels engineering, it has a significant advantage over conventional structures in crossing long, large and deep water areas. Hence, SFT has great potential for development of infrastructures in crossing straits. Aiming at features of SFT, this article discuses some challenges and problems, which are faced in design and construction of SFT, such as wave load determination, vortex-induced vibration, immigration and reduction of accidental load and situation, durability, innovational construction method, risk identification and control etc. The state-of-art and works done by Zhejiang University in the relative areas of SFT were introduced. The technological difficulties and corresponding solution were proposed. At last, the several key problems to be needed further research were proposed, so as to provide reference for the design, construction and project risk analysis of future SFT.

Abstract:Offshore oil and gas development plays an important part in the global energy sector. Offshore platforms and flexible pipes are the key equipments in the whole offshore oil and gas development system. Because of the randomness and uncertainty of wave and current loads in the ocean environment, the structural design and mechanical analysis of the marine equipment can be highly complicated. Therefore, this paper reviews the recent works of the theoretical model, numerical simulation, and experimental test in three research areas: hydrodynamic analysis of offshore platforms, structural mechanics analysis of flexible pipe and cable, and monitoring technology of offshore floating structures under marine loads. By analyzing their main research methods and key technical difficulties, this paper provides theoretical basis and technical support for the reliability engineering application of offshore platforms and flexible pipelines. Also, China is relatively backward in the design of marine floating platform, the design, analysis and testing of flexible pipeline and cable, as well as the marine equipment prototype monitoring technology research. Calling for breakthroughs at the earliest possible stage in the above fields, prime research should be focused on and strategic planning should be made to deal with "key areas and stranglehold problems". It is of great significance for the development of China's deep-sea energy and resource development of independent technology and on time to achieve the "carbon peak" national strategic objectives.

Abstract:Floating facilities such as, floating islands, floating houses, industries and, entire cities are constructions for habitation, entertainment, industrial or commercial purposes, and infrastructures are built to float on fresh- or seawater. They can be floating on air-filled or light materials. Recent developments in the ocean show a trend of offshore constructions, which can be situated above deeper waters, further offshore. These can replace the development of reclaimed lands close to shore. Floating architecture provides certain advantages for the planning of sustainable design, such as: (a) a number of viable responses to the problem of rising sea level, (b) much-needed space replacing the lack of land for agriculture, for housing, and for commercial growth, (c) the creation of new and innovative tourist destinations, (d) a much smaller ecological footprint than land-based constructions, (e) the extension of city centers that are built near the coast; (f) the possibility of green planning at an unclaimed plot. We present here a review of existing floating architecture with different functions, from housing, entertainment, and food production to industrial purposes such as wind parks and desalinization plants.

Abstract:The deep-sea ground contains a huge amount of energy and mineral resources,for example,oil,gas,and minerals.Various infrastructures such as floating structures,seabed structures,and foundations have been developed to exploit these resources.The seabed structures and foundations can be mainly classified into three types:subsea production structures,offshore pipelines,and anchors.This study reviewed the development,installation,and operation of these infrastructures,including their structures,design,installation,marine environ-ment loads,and applications.On this basis,the research gaps and further research directions were explored through this literature review.First,different floating structures were briefly analyzed and reviewed to introduce the design require-ments of the seabed structures and foundations.Second,the subsea production structures,including subsea manifolds and their foundations,were reviewed and discussed.Third,the basic characteristics and design methods of deep-sea pipelines,including subsea pipelines and risers,were analyzed and reviewed.Finally,the installation and bearing capacity of deep-sea subsea anchors and seabed trench influence on the anchor were reviewed.Through the review,it was found that marine environment conditions are the key inputs for any offshore structure design.The fabrication,installation,and operation of infrastructures should carefully consider the marine loads and geological conditions.Different structures have their own mechanical problems.The fatigue and stability of pipelines mainly depend on the soil-structure interaction.Anchor selection should consider soil types and possible trench formation.These focuses and research gaps can provide a helpful guide on further research,installation,and operation of deep-sea structures and foundations.

Abstract:Global warming caused by the emission of fossil fuel consumption has become critical, leading to the inevitable trend of clean energy development. Of the power generation systems using solar energy, the floating photovoltaic (FPV) system is a new type, attracting wide attention because of its many merits. The latest progress in the research and applications of FPVs from multiple aspects is summarized in this paper. First, the development of FPVs is briefly described with a summary of typical installed FPV systems. Innovative photovoltaic design concepts and hybrid usage with other renewable energies are emphasized for offshore applications. Furthermore, critical structural design considerations are discussed, particularly emphasizing critical aspects such as load estimations, wave-structure interaction analysis, floating structure types, and mooring system design. Finally, several significant future challenges to the development and applications of marine FPV systems are identified, including survivability in the open sea, long-term reliability, and environmental impact. It aims to provide a broad overview of the development status, offering limited insights into the trends and challenges for marine FPV systems.

Abstract:Ocean engineering and construction are promising foundations for the implementation of China ' s maritime power strategy. Compared to land engineering, ocean engineering requires more complex and demanding construction environments and conditions, which pose new challenges to structural engineering. Steel-concrete composite structures have broad application prospects in ocean engineering with significant performance advantages and comprehensive economic benefits as they successfully combine the respective advantages of steel and concrete. This paper summarizes the research work of composite structure research team of Tsinghua University with respect to the development and application of three types of composite structures in ocean engineering:cross-sea bridges, submarine immersed tunnels, and floating offshore platforms. Four new structural systems are proposed, including a long-span continuous beam bridge with integrated anti-crack technology, a double-steel-plate-concrete composite bridge tower suitable for cross-sea multi-tower cable-stayed bridges, a compartment steel-concrete-steel composite structure suitable for submarine immersed tunnels, and steel-concrete composite very large floating structure ( VLFS) . The key load-transferring mechanisms, mechanical performance, and design methods of the new structures are studied in depth, which are applied to the design of large-scale engineering projects such as the Dalian Bay Bridge, Nanjing No. 5 Yangtze River Bridge, Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, and offshore VLFS. Research and practice demonstrate that the new composite structural system has significant performance advantages and achieves satisfactory comprehensive economic benefits, thus providing new ideas and choices for ocean engineering construction and effectively promoting the application of steel-concrete composite structures in ocean engineering.
Risk analysis and management of submerged floating tunnel and its application

Abstract:Combining with the characteristics of submerged floating tunnel (SFT) and surrounding environment, it is of great theoretical and practical significance to develop research in the areas of potential risk and impact factors, risk index system, risk level of SFT. This paper summarized the main content of risk analysis of SFT, and classified the risk management into six stages: planning, feasibility study, design, tendering, construction and operation. Risk management workflow of SFT was given. Then, we focused on discussing the potential risks of SFT in investment, design, and environmental condition during planning and feasibility study stage. After identifying the risk factors of SFT, the risk assessment method of SFT was described by the presented fuzzy AHP method (FAHP). Finally, taking environment risks assessment of SFT prototype in Qiandao Lake as an example, environment risk assessment of SFT was completed by the programmed integration evaluation system of SFT based on Matlab7.5. Some measures and suggestions in risk control strategy were given.

Abstract:The development of solar energy is one of the most effective means to deal with the environmental and energy crisis. The floating photovoltaic (PV) system is an attractive type because of its multiple advantages and has been well developed based on fresh water areas on land. This paper focuses on the expansion of this sector towards the ocean, offshore floating PV plants, which is the new growth point with huge potential for the future PV sector. For this new field, the technology readiness level is really low and research to understand the interaction between offshore floating PV plants and marine environment are proceeding. In this paper, we aim to discuss the technological feasibility of offshore floating PV plants as well as analyze potential impacts on the marine environment during the life cycle of PV from manufacturing until disposal.

Abstract:To overcome the shortcomings of traditional very large floating structures constructed either of steel or concrete, a new type of very large floating structure constructed of steel-concrete composite components is developed. First, the concept of very large steel-concrete composite pontoon-type floating structure is proposed and the structural characteristics of the structure is described in detail, which has significant advantages and potential compared to steel or concrete floating structures, such as anti-explosion, durability, reliability, functional flexibility and economy. Then, on the basis of three-dimensional potential theory, the computer program THhydro is developed to calculate the three-dimensional hydroelastic response of floating structures. The program is substantially verified by the experimental and numerical results of previous literature. Finally, the parameter analysis on the hydroelastic response of very large steel-concrete composite pontoon-type floating structure is conducted, which shows that the usage of steel-concrete composite components can improve the performance of very large floating structures to an extent.
Hydrodynamic analysis of a novel box-type floating marine airport

Abstract:Very Large Floating Structure (VLFS) plays a crucial role in mitigating land resource scarcity in developed coastal areas. This paper introduces an innovative VLFS concept consisting of numerous concrete box-type floats interconnected by steel tie rods, designed for a 4000-m-long floating marine airport. Based on three-dimensional potential flow theory, two numerical models for the VLFS are established: the single-float model and the multi-float model interconnected by joints, where each float treated as rigid. The research explores the impact of wave direction, wave period, and real sea conditions on the hydrodynamic response of the VLFS. Additionally, this paper focus on the discrepancies in dynamic characteristics between single-float and muti-float, and investigate the special response principles of the muti-float model that closely resemble the actual hydrodynamic features of VLFS. The findings show that local deformation in the VLFS results in elevated wave loads on the structure, posing a significant challenge in designing the VLFS mooring system. Higher structural stiffness correlates with decreased mean and pulsation values of mooring cable tension. Incident waves at 0° induce local deformation on the wave-facing side of the VLFS; however, the deformation rapidly dissipates, exerting minimal impact on the floats supporting the airport runway—thus, creating an indirect wave-absorbing mechanism. When waves incident at 90°, the VLFS bends, adversely impacting the operations of marine airports and causing uneven stresses on the connectors, making them susceptible to fracture and damage. Hence, it is advisable to install marine airports parallel to prevailing wave directions. Furthermore, the hydroelastic behaviour of VLFS contribute to alleviating internal stresses within the structure. The focus of future research lies in balancing the impact of VLFS hydroelasticity on both system motion performance and structural internal stresses. The VLFS concept presented in this study performs effectively under various real sea conditions. The rationality and feasibility of the proposed VLFS concept are substantiated. The study lays the foundation and presents ideas for the future development of marine space.

Abstract:AbstractFloating solar materials and their devices, which can effectively solve the problems faced by powder solar materials, such as difficult recycling, poor stability, and difficult maintenance, have received widespread attention in recent years. However, it is still in the early stage of development and still faces many challenges in material design, device preparation, and systematic application. Therefore, it is particularly necessary to summarize the research progress of related aspects to promote the development of this field (To achieve large‐scale applications, it is necessary to develop devices that can be applied on a large scale). In this review, the systematic construction methods of floating materials are reviewed from the aspects of lightweight carrier integration as well as functionalization and surface modification. Subsequently, the recent studies on floating solar materials and their devices are categorized and summarized. Their applications in the purification of polluted seawater, water splitting, CO2 reduction, and prevention of water bloom are reviewed in detail. Finally, the outlook for future development is critically discussed.
