Abstract:We present an analysis of the shear-banding dynamics in a bulk metallic glass (BMG), including the temperature rise in the band, the sliding speed of the band, and the time elapsed as well as the step size of the shear offset growth in a stop-and-go cycle. This model analysis quantitatively demonstrates that the major shear band can remain cold and slide in a stick-slip manner. We predict that the shear step (distance covered by a stop-and-go cycle) scales with the sample size and machine stiffness. We also illustrate the conditions when such serrated shear is unsustainable and a hot shear band directly develops in a runaway instability (catastrophe). These findings provide physical insight into the shear-instability processes and offer useful information for improving the plasticity of BMGs. The calculation results are used to explain several intriguing recent experimental observations, including the stick slip of the dominant shear-band and the sample-size effects on the plastic-flow behavior of BMGs.

Abstract:In our paper [F.M. Li et al., 2008], two errors were noticed after the paper went to press. On page 3002, near the middle of the left column, it should say "In this method, zinc oxide and carbon powders are mixed together, usually in a ZnO:C ratio of 1: 1 or 1:4 by weight." In Fig. 8, on page 3005, the x-axis label should say "energy (eV)" instead of "wavelength (eV)." Also, this paper should have been designated as Invited, as it is now above.

Abstract:Due to the localization in space and the transience in time, investigations on the shear bands in metallic glasses are extremely difficult. The liquid-like layer frozen on fracture surfaces suggests a decreased viscosity in the shear band. Whether it is resulted from locally heating remains controversial. In this paper, the temperature rise in shear bands is profiled as a function of the duration of shear banding event, the distance from the shear band center and the thickness of shear band. The elastic energies released from the specimen and the testing machine are estimated regarding the serrations with different load drops in the compressive load–displacement curve of a Zr-based metallic glass. The duration of shear event and the released energy by serration are the two main factors determining the temperature rise in shear bands. It is found that both “cold” and “hot” shear bands are attainable. Then the sliding speed, the viscosity and the crystallization probability of shear band are studied. These results can help to better understand and describe the operation of shear band in a quantified and analytical way.

Abstract:Metallic glasses have received considerable attention in the fields of materials science and condensed matter physics. The disordered structure of metallic glasses gives rise to unique mechanical properties, such as high strength, large elasticity and a distinct deformation mechanism in contrast to conventional crystalline alloys. The plastic deformation of metallic glasses at temperatures well below the glass transition is generally carried out through the formation of highly localized shear bands. Therefore, a thorough understanding of shear banding behavior is vital for improving the mechanical properties of metallic glasses and tailoring the properties of post-deformed metallic glasses. This review article aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the atomic mechanisms underlying shear band nucleation, propagation and interaction. Additionally, the dynamics of shear bands and their correlation with plasticity are also presented. This article also focuses on the progress in the fundamental structure and properties of mature shear bands, such as density fluctuation, medium-range order, shear-band affected zone, and diffusivity. Furthermore, the fracture mechanism based on the development of cavities is elaborated. Finally, we identify a number of key unsolved issues on this subject.

Abstract:Bulk Zr64.13Cu15.75Ni10.12Al10 metallic glass has been rolled at room temperature in two different directions, and the dependences of microstructure and tensile mechanical property on the degree of deformation and rolling directions have been investigated. No deformation-induced crystallization occurs except for shear bands. Shear band formation in conjugated directions is achieved in the specimen rolled in two directions, while rolling in one direction induces shear band formation only in a single direction. Pre-existing properly spaced soft inhomogeneities can stabilize shear bands and lead to tensile plastic strain, and the efficient intersection of shear bands in conjugated directions results in work-hardening behavior, which is further confirmed by in situ tensile scanning electron microscopic observation. Based on the experimental results obtained in two different specimen geometries and finite element analysis, it is deduced that a normal-stress-modified maximum shear stress criterion rather than a shear plane criterion can describe the conditions for the formation of shear bands in uniaxial tension.

Abstract:Inelastic deformation of metallic glass is through shear banding, characterized by significantly localized deformation and emerged expeditiously under certain stress state. This study establishes a new constitutive model addressing the physical origin of the shear banding. In the modeling, the atomic structural change and the free volume generation are embodied by the plastic shear strain and the associated dilatation. The rugged free energy landscape is adopted to naturally reflect the rate-independent flow stress and flow serrations. Based on this, the conditions for the onset of shear banding instability are established, which enables the explicit calculation of the shear band inclination angle and its extension speed. The study concludes that shear band angle is significantly influenced by the diltancy factor and pressure sensitivity, that a shear band does not increase its thickness once emanated from a deformation unit, that the spreading speed of a shear band is intersonic, and that more shear bands, which lead to higher ductility, can be induced by high strain rates or by the introduction of a second material phase. The analysis also demonstrates that the ductility of metallic glass depends on the sample geometry and/or the stress state.

Abstract:The plastic flow of metallic glasses (MGs) in bulk is mediated by nanoscale shear bands, which is known to proceed in a stick-slip manner until reaching a transition state causing catastrophic failures. Such a slip-to-failure transition controls the plasticity of MGs and resembles many important phenomena in natural science and engineering, such as friction, lubrication and earthquake, therefore has attracted tremendous research interest over past decades. However, despite the fundamental and practical importance, the physical origin of this slip-to-failure transition is still poorly understood. By tracking the behavior of a single shear band, here we discover that the final fracture of various MGs during compression is triggered as the velocity of the dominant shear band rises to a critical value, the magnitude of which is independent of alloy composition, sample size, strain rate and testing frame stiffness. The critical shear band velocity is rationalized with the continuum theory of liquid instability, physically originating from a shear-induced cavitation process inside the shear band. Our current finding sheds a quantitative insight into deformation and fracture in disordered solids and, more importantly, is useful to the design of plastic/tough MG-based materials and structures.

Abstract:The authors regret to inform that one of the modifications proposed in the article “High-fidelity micro-scale modeling of the thermo-visco-plastic behavior of carbon fiber polymer matrix composites” [1] was found to be unnecessary: the paraboloid yield criterion is sufficient to describe the shear behavior of the epoxy matrix considered (Epoxy 3501-6). The authors recently noted that the experimental work [2] used to validate the pure matrix response considered engineering shear strain instead of its tensorial counter-part, which caused the apparent inconsistency with the paraboloid yield criterion.
