Abstract:Abstract Room temperature phosphorescence materials have inspired extensive attention owing to their great potential in optical applications. However, it is hard to achieve a room temperature phosphorescence material with simultaneous long lifetime and high phosphorescence quantum efficiency. Herein, multi-confined carbon dots were designed and fabricated, enabling room temperature phosphorescence material with simultaneous ultralong lifetime, high phosphorescence quantum efficiency, and excellent stability. The multi-confinement by a highly rigid network, stable covalent bonding, and 3D spatial restriction efficiently rigidified the triplet excited states of carbon dots from non-radiative deactivation. The as-designed multi-confined carbon dots exhibit ultralong lifetime of 5.72 s, phosphorescence quantum efficiency of 26.36%, and exceptional stability against strong oxidants, acids and bases, as well as polar solvents. This work provides design principles and a universal strategy to construct metal-free room temperature phosphorescence materials with ultralong lifetime, high phosphorescence quantum efficiency, and high stability for promising applications, especially under harsh conditions.

Abstract:Photoluminescent (PL) energy transfer (ET) between two typical rare earth activators Tb3+ and Eu3+ is utilized to achieve color-tunable emission and the color range is apparently dependent on the ET efficiency. In the target host ZnGdB5O10 (ZGBO), the relatively low symmetric coordination environment of rare earth cation not only suppresses the parity-forbidden law of the 4f-4f transitions of Tb3+ in the near-UV region, but also enhances the internal quantum efficiency (IQE), where the optimal IQE is 65.61% for ZGBO:0.8Tb3+. Moreover, its ET to Eu3+ is highly efficient, i.e. 94.71% in ZGBO:0.8Tb3+, 0.10Eu3+, which eventually leads to a wide range of color-tunable emissions from green (0.2915, 0.5915) to red (0.6207, 0.3731). The systematical PL spectra study on Tb3+/Eu3+ singly- and co-doped phosphors suggests the ET mechanism is through the electric dipole-dipole interaction according to the Inokuti-Hirayama (I-H) model. Additionally, the in-situ high temperature PL spectra indicate the very high thermal stability of ZnGd0.19Tb0.8Eu0.01B5O10, indicating the potential candidate to the near-UV light emitting diodes pumped phosphors.

Abstract:Abstract Tunable full-color room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) is charming due to its potentials in multiple anti-counterfeitings, all-color displays, and multichannel biomarkers. However, it is a huge challenge to acquire excitation-dependent continuously adjustable full-color RTP from a single-component compound. Herein, we report two Zn(II)−based organic complexes, which are the first examples that present blue, cyan, green, yellow, orange, and red continuously tunable phosphorescence with decent quantum efficiency in response to variation of excitation energy at ambient conditions. The unique photoluminescence property is induced by multiple triplet decay pathways, i.e. 3ligand-centered* and 3charge transfer*. The population and stabilization of the triplet excitons benefit from heavy atom effect of Br ions and restriction of molecular motion due to crystallization. This work contributes an insight for the construction of full-color RTP materials and endows Zn(II)−based organic complexes with fresh features for extensive applications.

Abstract:Organic phosphors offer a promising alternative in optoelectronics, but their temperature-sensitive feature has restricted their applications in high-temperature scenarios, and the attainment of high-temperature phosphorescence (HTP) is still challenging. Herein, a series of organic cocrystal phosphors are constructed by supramolecular assembly with an ultralong emission lifetime of up to 2.16 s. Intriguingly, remarkable stabilization of triplet excitons can also be realized at elevated temperature, and green phosphorescence is still exhibited in solid state even up to 150 oC. From special molecular packing within the crystal lattice, it has been observed that the orientation of isolated water cluster and well-controlled molecular organization via multiple interactions can favor the structural rigidity of cocrystals more effectively to suppress the nonradiative transition, thus resulting in efficient room-temperature phosphorescence and unprecedented survival of HTP.

Abstract:Controlling dopant ion concentration and temperature are two effectual methods to achieve color tuning and obtain white photoluminescent phosphors. Research of the emission manipulation by both concentration and temperature remains insufficient. In this work, we utilize the host defect emission and rare-earth ion emission in Y2CaGe4O12:Tb3+ under various temperatures to obtain a series of blue-green emissions widely distributed on the Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage (CIE) map. Concentration and thermal responses of the blue and the green emissions were analyzed and the host to dopant energy transfer shows significant at low doping concentration (<0.5%) and low temperature (<300 K). The overall luminescent behavior suggests the blue and the green emissions could be treated individually. A mathematical description (R-2 = 0.982) was given to illustrate the successful controlling of emission by concentration and temperature and several cold white lights were observed at various conditions.

Abstract:A series of rare-earth ion-doped gadolinium oxysulfide phosphors Gd2O2S:RE3+, Ti, Mg (RE=Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb) were synthesized by solid-state reaction. The excitation and photoluminescence spectra, afterglow spectra, afterglow decay curves and thermoluminescence spectra of the phosphors were examined. According to the afterglow spectra, gadolinium oxysulfide doped with rare-earth ions were classified into three groups. When rare earth ions such as Eu3+, Sm3+, Dy3+, Ho3+, Er3+ and Tm3+ were introduced into the Gd2O2S host, their characteristic emission as well as that from Gd2O2S:Ti, Mg were observed. In case of Yb3+ and Nd3+, only the broadband luminescence of Gd2O2S:Ti, Mg was obtained. Gadolinium oxysulfide doped with Pr3+, Tb3+ and Ce3+ did not show afterglow emission. The calculated trap energy levels of the samples were compared. The role of Ti and Mg ions and a potential mechanism for persistent luminescence in the samples were discussed.

Abstract:Long lasting phosphorescence has been observed in oxygen-deficient zinc–boron-germanosilicate glass–ceramics after 254nm ultraviolet lights irradiation at room temperature. Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum confirms the presence of two paramagnetic centers. And the ESR signal shows a synchronized decay process with afterglow intensity after removing the excitation light, suggesting the afterglow is associated with the paramagnetic centers which are generated during the irradiation. Based on the approximate t−1 decay law of the phosphorescence intensity, the long lasting phosphorescence is attributed to thermal assisted tunneling recombination between pairs of distant electrons and Ge-related oxygen-deficient centers.

Abstract:Nowadays, one-phase and full-color phosphors have gained increasing interest. Here, we show that Mn-activated zinc gallogermanate, Zn1+xGa2-2xGexO4: Mn, x = 0 similar to 1, phosphors exhibit a broadly tunable luminescence from green to deep red with the substitution of Ga3+ by Ge4+. The green and deep red emissions are attributed to Mn2+ and Mn4+ occupying the tetrahedrally coordinated Zn2+ and octahedrally coordinated Ga3+ sites, respectively. The origin of the tunable luminescence is discussed. The present phosphors have potential uses in field emission displays and in vivo bio-imaging. (C)2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Organic light-emitting materials, especially those with two-phase high emission, have attracted considerable attention for applications in bioimaging agents, sensors, optoelectronic devices, etc. Many fluorophores applied in such fields either emit brightly in dilute solution or in aggregate state, with the former often suffering from aggregation-caused quenching effect, and the latter falling dark at low concentrations. Herein, we overcame the dilemma by balancing the planar and distorted structures with various side units and achieved bright emission in both dilute solution (e.g., the absolute quantum yields (ФPL) = 90.2% in THF) and in aggregate states (e.g., ФPL=92.7% in powder state, ФPL = 95.3% in crystal). These luminescent mate-rials are demonstrated as promising guests embedded into host matrix to achieve efficient room temperature phosphores-cence, and these host-guest systems could be applied in the information encryption. Moreover, these luminogens could also be used as single-component emitting layers to construct non-doped organic light-emitting diodes, from which a maximum external quantum efficiency up to 4.75% with Commission International de L’Eclairge (CIE) coordinates of (0.15, 0.05), which is neatest to next generation ultra-high definition television (UHDTV) display standard, was realized. This work pro-vides a feasible strategy of balancing the planar and distorted structure of a luminogen toward highly efficient emission in both solution and solid states.

Abstract:A novel color tunable phosphor was developed by a high-temperature solid-state reaction route with apatite-type Ca8NaGd(PO4)6F2 (CNGF) as matrix for the doping with Ce3+ and Tb3+ ions. The crystal structures were studied by XRD and Rietveld refinement, which clarified the structural parameters and the occupation of doped ions in crystal lattice. The luminescent intensity of Tb3+ ions was significantly improved by the energy transfer from Ce3+ to Tb3+ ions. According to the luminescence spectra and fluorescence decay curves of CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+, a possible energy transfer mechanism was proposed. Fluorescent paper was prepared by binding the CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ phosphor particles with bacterial cellulose, and the morphology and luminescence properties of the paper were investigated. These results demonstrate that the obtained CNGF: Ce3+, Tb3+ is a promising green phosphor candidate for solid-state lighting and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Abstract:Solution-processed organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are promising emitters for next-generation optoelectronic devices. Multiple-colored, bright light emission is achieved by tuning their composition and structures. However, there is very little research on exploring optically active organic cations for hybrid perovskites. Here, unique room-temperature phosphorescence from hybrid perovskites is reported by employing novel organic cations. Efficient room-temperature phosphorescence is activated by designing a mixed-cation perovskite system to suppress nonradiative recombination. Multiple-colored phosphorescence is achieved by molecular design. Moreover, the emission lifetime can be tuned by varying the perovskite composition to achieve persistent luminescence. Efficient room-temperature phosphorescence is demonstrated in hybrid perovskites that originates from the triplet states of the organic cations, opening a new dimension to the further development of perovskite emitters with novel functional organic cations for versatile display applications.
