Abstract:Long afterglow phosphors play a significant role in practical applications. However, due to their complex electronic structures, it is difficult to obtain tunable long afterglow phosphors. Herein, a novel long afterglow phosphor, Gd1.5Y1.5Ga3Al2O12:Tb3+, was successfully synthesized. Its detailed structural information was extractedviathe Rietveld method, and its corresponding optical properties were further systematically exploredviaphotoluminescence (PL), phosphorescence and thermoluminescence (TL) spectroscopy. Both the photoluminescence and long afterglow properties showed tunable behavior with a variation in the concentration of Tb3+. The investigation of the tunability of its photoluminescence and long afterglow properties revealed that the cross-relaxation energy transfer mechanism contributes to its tunable character. Meanwhile, long-lasting phosphorescence could be observed for a few hours by the naked eye in a dark environment after discontinuing the UV irradiation. Due to the potential existence of the photo-excited (Tb3+)(+), thedefect clusters were proposed, with oxygen vacancies acting as electron trapping centers and (Tb3+)(+)attracting holes. Finally, an appropriate mechanism for the tunable long afterglow emission was proposed.

Abstract:A novel white long persistent phosphor of Y3Al2Ga3O12:Tb3+ was prepared by the soft chemical method. Y3Al2Ga3O12:Tb3+ presented a white long persistent luminescence when the doping concentration of Tb3+ was just 0.1% and the afterglow time was able to last more than 2 h. The persistent emission of Tb3+ in Y3Al2Ga3O12 consisted of all color emissions in the visible spectrum from an identical luminescent center (Tb3+); meanwhile, the white-light color won't vary as the afterglow time goes on. The mystery behind this phenomenon was studied deeply including trap depths, distribution and types. The trap depths was calculated from 0.65 to 1.15 eV by the initial rise method analysis, highly corresponding to the ideal energy for trapping and releasing at room temperature. What's more, the estimated trap structure was proved to be a continuous trap distribution by varying the thermal cleaning temperature. The persistent luminescence mechanism of Y3Al2Ga3O12:Tb3+ was illustrated and discussed in detail on the basis of the experimental results. Abstract:Long afterglow alkaline earth aluminates MAl2O4:Eu, Dy (M: Ca, Sr, Ba) phosphors were prepared at high temperature and weak reductive atmosphere. The excitation and emission spectra of these phosphors indicated that all of them are broad band, and the main emission peaks around 445, 496 and 518nm of CaAl2O4:Eu, Dy, BaAl2O4:Eu, Dy and SrAl2O4:Eu, Dy, respectively, are due to 5d→4f transition of Eu2+. The decay curves implied that these phosphors contain fast-decay and slow-decay process. The thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves showed that the peaks of MAl2O4:Eu, Dy phosphors are 124, 77 and 173°C as the order of Ca, Sr and Ba in the MAl2O4:Eu, Dy (M: Ca, Sr, Ba) structure, respectively. The Dy3+ trap levels may be considered to be responsible for the long afterglow phosphorescence at room temperature.

Abstract:A new phosphor Gd2O2S:Ti was synthesized by a traditional solid-state reaction method. The luminescent properties and thermoluminescence curves were investigated. An orange afterglow was observed in the Gd2O2S:Ti excited by UV light with a persistent time of about 2 h according to the light perception of dark-adapted human eyes. The mechanism of the afterglow has been discussed and analyzed by the thermo-luminescence spectra. We conclude that the transition E-2 -> T-2(2) of Ti3+ metastable state is the reason of luminescence and afterglow, and give a new afterglow mechanism of this kind of phosphor.

Abstract:A new green luminescent phosphor, Li(Y1-x Tbx )GeO4 , was prepared using a high-temperature solid-phase method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) measured spectrum agreed well with the standard card JCPDS No. 02-3479, indicating that it is a quaternary compound belonging to the space group of Pnma(62) with an orthogonal crystalline phase; the excitation and emission spectra measured using the phosphor spectrometer showed that it can be effectively excited by near-ultraviolet light at 378 nm and blue light at 482 nm, and produced excellent strong emission of green light at 550 nm. The afterglow test results show that the sample had a good long afterglow effect at lower doping concentrations; the thermal stability test results showed that its thermal burst activation energy ΔE ≈ 0.37 eV had its excellent thermal stability. The rare earth Tb3+ -doped green phosphor, LiYGeO4 :Tb3+ , has potential applications in household lighting, medical therapy, and optical storage.

Abstract:Long afterglow phosphor Y2O2S:Gd,Eu,Ti,Mg was synthesized by a gas absorption method and the effect of Ti4+ and Mg2+ ions doping on the luminescent properties was also investigated. Single phase Y2O2S can be obtained by calcining the oxide mixture in a graphite crucible absorbed with sulfur. Ti4+ and Mg2+ ions decrease the luminescent intensity of the phosphor, but either Ti4+ or Mg2+ ion doping results in red long afterglow. A strong thermoluminescence peak appears when codoping Ti4+ and Mg2+ ions in the phosphor.

Abstract:The new Er3+, Ho3+ and Tm3+ doped gadolinium oxysulfide phosphors with the long afterglow emission were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. The synthesized phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction. The excitation and photoluminescence spectra, afterglow spectra and afterglow decay curve were examined by fluorescence spectroscopy. The afterglow spectra of Gd2O2S:Er3+, Mg, Ti showed typical transitions of Er3+ at 528 (H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2)), 548 (S-4(3/2) -> I-4(15/2)) and 669 nm (F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2)). In the afterglow spectra of Gd2O2S: Ho3+, Mg, Ti, typical transitions of Ho3+ at 546 nm (S-5(2) -> I-5(8)), 651 and 661 nm (F-5(5) -> I-5(8)) were observed. In Gd2O2S:Tm3+, Mg, Ti, the afterglow emission at 800 nm ((1)G(4) -> H-3(5)) of Tm3+ was seen. The mechnism and model of afterglow energy transfer were proposed.

Abstract:A series of new long-lasting phosphor Gd2O2S:xEr,Ti are prepared by the conventional high-temperature solid-state method and their luminescent properties are systematically investigated in this paper. The characteristic afterglow emission of Er, which is due to the transition of 4F9/2→4I15/2 and 4S3/2→4I15/2, is reported for the first time. XRD, photoluminescence, long-lasting phosphorescence and decay curves are used to characterize the synthesized phosphors. The possible energy transfer mechanism of Gd2O2S:xEr,Ti is also investigated.

Abstract:A new type of long persistent green luminescent phosphor Ca2Ga2GeO7: Tb3+ was prepared by high temperature solid-state reaction technique. In this paper, the crystal structure, luminescence properties and decay curves of phosphors were mainly studied. The long persistent luminescence (LPL) properties of these phosphors were characterized by LPL spectra, LPL decay curves and thermoluminescence (TL) spectra. When the ultraviolet (UV) light source was turned off, Ca2Ga2GeO7: Tb3+ phosphor exhibit typical LPL behavior for approximately 1.2 h. The green-emitting LPL was originated form the typical 5D4→7F5 transition of Tb3+ ions, and the green LPL is similar to PL. Based on the experimental results, the LPL mechanism and traps distribution of the Ca2Ga2GeO7: Tb3+ was described via TL analysis in detail.

Abstract:A series of YGa1.5Al1.5(BO3)(4): Tb3+, Eu3+ inorganic luminescence materials were successfully synthesized through a high-temperature solid-state reaction. Powder X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the crystal structure and phase purity of the obtained samples. Then, scanning electron microscopy elemental mapping was taken to characterize the distribution of the doped ions. Detailed investigations on the photoluminescence emission and excitation spectra and fluorescence lifetime revealed that trivalent europium ions can be well sensitized by trivalent terbium ions under near-ultraviolet excitation. Additionally, the energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ can be controlled to realize multi-colour emissions covering the green to red visible region. Concentration quenching does not take place in Tb3+ or Eu3+ singularly-doped YGAB due to its structure isolation. Therefore, satisfactory luminescence properties related to the structure specificity make these phosphors suitable for WLEDs.

Abstract:In this paper, color-tunable Gd2O2CN2:Tb3+,Eu3+ phosphors were obtained by co-doping Eu3+ and Tb3+ ions into Gd2O2CN2 host and singly varying the Eu3+ doping concentration. The characteristics of the crystal structure, photoluminescence lifetime and photoluminescence of Tb3+, Eu3+ single-doped and Tb3+ and Eu3+ co-doped Gd2O2CN2, were carefully investigated by XRD, FTIR, PL decay curves and photoluminescence (PL). The results indicated that Tb3+ single-doped Gd2O2CN2 phosphor shows a green emission, and by increasing Eu3+ content, Gd2O2CN2:Tb3+, Eu3+ phosphors emit green to orange and then to red light under the excitation of 379nm.

Abstract:The tunable color emission and persistent luminescence lifetime in phosphor CaGa2S4: Eu2+, Ho3+ were achieved through the introduction of alkaline earth elements Mg, Sr and Ba, in which the Ca was partially replaced. The duration of the persistent luminescence of the material CaGa2S4: Eu2+, Ho3+ was remarkably shortened as Al was introduced, substituting for Ga. The luminescent properties were investigated via thermo-luminescence (TL) glow curves, phosphorescence spectra and decay time curves. These results show that vast changes in trap levels and charge density takes place with introduction of other alkaline earth elements or Al. Trap depths and the trap density were also evaluated by simple methodologies.

Abstract:Long afterglow alkaline earth aluminosilicates MAl2Si2O8:Eu2+, Dy3+ (M=Ca, Sr, Ba) phosphors were prepared by traditional solid state reaction and their luminescent properties were investigated. As CaAl2Si2O8, SrAl2Si2O8 and BaAl2Si2O8 acted as host crystal respectively, the luminescent intensity and peak positions of these phosphors varied with host crystals because of different crystal field environment of Eu2+ ions. The emission spectra of these phosphors are broad bands with peaks at 440 nm for CaAl2Si2O8:Eu, Dy, 409 nm for SrAl2Si2O8:Eu, Dy, 373 nm and 455 nm for BaAl2Si2O8:Eu, Dy. The decay curves illustrated that CaAl2Si2O8:Eu, Dy phosphor owned the best long afterglow property among these three kinds of phosphors.

Abstract:The white-light long-lasting phosphors Y2O2S:Tb3+, Sr2+ or/and Zr4+ were prepared and studied. The white-light afterglow emission after the irradiation with 254nm UV are composed of the blue light emission and the yellowish-green light emission, originating from the transitions of 5D3→7F5, 5D4→7F5 in Tb3+ when the Tb3+ concentration is not higher than 0.3at%. The codoped Sr2+ and Zr4+ ions act as trap-creating ions. The afterglow can last over 21min in the dark for Y2O2S:Tb3+0.3%, Sr2+4%, Zr4+4% after irradiation by 254nm ultraviolet light. Y2O2S:Tb3+ may be a promising material for the development of white-light long-lasting phosphor since the Tb3+ has a high luminescent efficiency and the dominant excitation band of 4f →5d is located at 220–300nm.

Abstract:A series of Bi3+ based blue long afterglow phosphor Ca14Ga10Zn6O35:Bi3+ were successfully synthesized via solid state reaction method. Under ultraviolet excitation of the samples, a blue emission originated from 3P1 -> 1S0 transition of Bi3+engendered a broadband from 380 to 600 nm with peak at around 432 nm. The peak positions of the emission curves have experienced a slight red shift from 432 to 442 nm when the concentrations of Bi3+ were increased from 0.1 % to 1.5 %. After excitation stopped, the persistent luminescence from Bi3+ ions could last more than half an hour. The afterglow duration times were shortened remarkably with the increasing concentration of Bi3+, from several thousand seconds to several hundred seconds, along with decreased afterglow intensity. With the alkaline metals Li+ and Na+ co-doped to provide charge compensation, the emission intensity of Bi3+ ions was increased, together with compensated by the shortened persistent time. A series of thermoluminescence glow curves of 0.1 % Bi3+ doped sample were measured with different delay times to detect the population dynamics of traps. With the systematical experimental results, a reasonable model was proposed to illuminate the mechanism of the emission and persistent phenomenon of this promising novel Bi3+ based blue long afterglow phosphor.

Abstract:Persistent luminescence (PerL) phosphors have been widely applied in many advanced applications in the field of emergency lighting, safety signage, and ornaments. Recently, the PerL phosphors based on germanates have attracted great attention owing to their excellent PerL performance. However, the design and development of excellent germanates-based PerL materials with full spectral emissions remain challenging due to the lack of color-tunable PerL, especially in the blue and green regions (400–600 nm). Herein, we develop a new type of Tb3+-activated LiYGeO4 PerL phosphor with real-time adjusting the photoluminescence (PL) and PerL color, which can be effectively excited by a 254 UV light. Both blue and green PerL are realized simultaneously in a single phosphor. When LiYGeO4:Tb3+ doped with lower concentrations of Tb3+ ions, phosphors emit blue PL and PerL. With increasing Tb3+ concentration, the PL and PerL colors of LiYGeO4:Tb3+ PerL phosphor are gradually regulated from blue to green. Besides, LiYGeO4:Tb3+ exhibits temperature-dependent luminescence property, whose PL and PerL colors can also be successively widely tuned by various temperature. This stable and tunable color in real-time PL and PerL property promote the as-designed LiYGeO4:Tb3+ phosphor to have potential applications in advanced anti-counterfeiting and display devices.
