Abstract:An ability to insert electronic/optoelectronic systems into precise locations of biological tissues provides powerful capabilities, especially in neuroscience such as optogenetics where light can activate/deactivate critical cellular signalling and neural systems. In such cases, engineered thermal management is essential, to avoid adverse effects of heating on normal biological processes. Here, an analytic model of heat conduction is developed for microscale, inorganic light-emitting diodes (mu-ILEDs) in a pulsed operation in biological tissues. The analytic solutions agree well with both three-dimensional finite-element analysis and experiments. A simple scaling law for the maximum temperature increase is presented in terms of material (e.g. thermal diffusivity), geometric (e.g. mu-ILED size) and loading parameters (e.g. pulsed peak power, duty cycle and frequency). These results provide useful design guidelines not only for injectable mu-ILED systems, but also for other similar classes of electronic and optoelectronic components.

Abstract:Considering the kinetic and fluid dynamic processes in the gain medium, a theoretical model is established to describe the mechanism of thermal-lensing effect in an exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser. The three-dimensional distribution of temperature and index of refraction in the gain medium are depicted. The effective focal length and radius of thermal lens are predicted. Our simulation results show the thermal lens plays a non-negligible role in high-power XPCsLs and can be significantly aggravated in higher wall temperature, buffer pressure and pump intensity. The divergence of laser beam influenced by thermal lens is also made in detail. This model is helpful for in-depth understanding of the thermal-lensing effect in XPALs.

Abstract:Considerable advances in manipulating heat flow in solids have been made through the innovation of artificial thermal structures such as thermal diodes, camouflages, and cloaks. Such thermal devices can be readily constructed only at the macroscale by mechanically assembling different materials with distinct values of thermal conductivity. Here, we extend these concepts to the microscale by demonstrating a monolithic material structure on which nearly arbitrary microscale thermal metamaterial patterns can be written and programmed. It is based on a single, suspended silicon membrane whose thermal conductivity is locally, continuously, and reversibly engineered over a wide range (between 2 and 65 W/m·K) and with fine spatial resolution (10-100 nm) by focused ion irradiation. Our thermal cloak demonstration shows how ion-write microthermotics can be used as a lithography-free platform to create thermal metamaterials that control heat flow at the microscale.

Abstract:An analytical model is developed to study the thermal properties of microscale, inorganic light-emitting diodes (μ-ILEDs) with ultra-thin geometries and layouts. The predicted surface and μ-ILED temperatures agree well with experiments and finite-element simulations. A simple scaling law is obtained for the normalized μ-ILED temperature versus the normalized μ-ILED size. This study provides a theory to guide the design of layouts that minimize adverse thermal effects on the performance of μ-ILEDs not only for solid-state lighting but also for applications integrating μ-ILED devices on complex/soft substrate as are currently of interest in optogenetics and other emerging areas in biology.

Abstract:Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in a pulsed operation offer combined characteristics in efficiency, thermal management, and communication, which make them attractive for many applications such as backlight unit, optical communication, and optogenetics. In this paper, an analytic model, validated by three dimensional finite element analysis and experiments, is developed to study the thermal properties of micro-scale inorganic LEDs (μ-ILED) in a pulsed operation. A simple scaling law for the μ-ILED temperature after saturation is established in terms of the material and geometrical parameters of μ-ILED systems, peak power, and duty cycle. It shows that the normalized maximum temperature increase only depends on two non-dimensional parameters: normalized μ-ILED area and duty cycle. This study provides design guidelines for minimizing adverse thermal effects of μ-ILEDs.

Abstract:Microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes (mu-ILEDs) have attracted much attention due to their excellent performance in biointegrated applications such as optogenetics. The thermal behaviors of mu-ILEDs are critically important since a certain temperature increase may degrade the LED performance and cause tissue lesion. The mu-ILEDs in a pulsed operation offer an advantage in thermal management. In this paper, a 3D analytic model, as validated by finite element analysis, is developed to study the thermal response of rectangular mu-ILEDs in a pulsed operation. A scaling law for the maximum normalized temperature increase of rectangular mu-ILEDs in terms of non-dimensional parameters is established. The influences of geometric (i.e. shape factor) and loading parameters (e.g. duty cycle and period) on the temperature increase are systematically investigated. These results are very helpful in designing mu-ILEDs by providing guidelines to avoid adverse thermal effects.

Abstract:The orthotropic material with the in-plane thermal conductivity much larger than the off-plane one can control the heat flow direction. This feature provides unique benefits in thermal management of micro-scale inorganic light-emitting diodes (μ-ILEDs) device for biointegrated applications by helping the heat dissipation from μ-ILEDs along the in-plane directions to lower the μ-ILED temperature and prevent the heat dissipation to the tissue along the off-plane direction to ensure a low tissue temperature. Three-dimensional analytical models, accounting for the coupling between the Fourier heat conduction in the μ-ILED device and the Pennes bioheat transfer in the human skin, are established to investigate the thermal behaviors of μ-ILEDs on an orthotropic substrate integrated with the human skin. Both the operations of μ-ILEDs in a constant mode and pulsed mode are studied. The maximum temperature increases of μ-ILED and in the tissue are derived and their dependences on various parameters such as the thermal conductivities of the orthotropic substrate, substrate thickness, and loading parameters (e.g., duty cycle, pulse period) are investigated. These results pave the theoretical foundation for the thermal management of μ-ILED devices for biointegrated applications.

Abstract:The microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes (mu-ILEDs) create novel opportunities in biointegrated applications such as wound healing acceleration and optogenetics. Analytical expressions, validated by finite element analysis, are obtained for the temperature increase of a rectangular mu-ILED device on an orthotropic substrate, which could offer an appealing advantage in controlling the heat flow direction to achieve the goal in thermal management. The influences of various parameters (e.g., thermal conductivities of orthotropic substrate, loading parameters) on the temperature increase of the mu-ILED are investigated based on the obtained closed-form solutions. These results provide a novel route to control the temperature distribution in the mu-ILED system and provide easily interpretable guidelines to minimize the adverse thermal effects. Abstract:A theoretical model of heat conduction is developed for wirelessly powered microscale inorganic light-emitting diodes (μ-ILEDs). Analytical solutions are obtained for the three-dimensional temperature distribution of each component in the system, which agree reasonably well with the finite-element analyses and experiment results. A simplified scaling law is presented between the non-dimensional temperature of the μ-ILEDs, and the combined geometrical parameters and thermal conductivities of the inductive receiver coil and the substrate. These results provide useful design guidelines for avoiding adverse heating of wireless μ-ILEDs systems, of critical importance for bio-implanted applications.

Abstract:In this article, an innovative micro-actuator based on photo-thermal heating is introduced. The basic ideas are to apply a new way to get large actuation power from laser source. When a beam of laser irradiates a thin sheet, the sheet temperature increases and volume expands. Besides irradiation laser power, convection coefficient and the parameters of sheet material, the length-width ratio of sheet also influences the heating process. Applying this characteristic, an asymmetric photo-thermal actuator was manufactured by the excimer laser micromaching system. Steady-state thermal analysis is presented. Feasibility experiments with a laser diode (655 nm) as the power source were carried out, and the data of deflection have been measured under different laser power. The experiment results prove the availability of these novel photo-thermal micro-actuators, and demonstrate that the deflection can be 11.8 μm at 10 mW laser power. This mirco-actuator doesn't need of the old power supply modes of external electric wire or small battery, and can be operated in non-focused uniform irradiation, so it has more mobility and can be controlled remotely. Furthermore, this actuator can be applied in many special environments. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:Transfer printing is an emerging technique for materials assembly and micro-/nano-fabrication. An important emerging variant of this process involves laser-induced impulsive heating to initiate separation at the interface between a soft, elastomeric stamp and hard micro-/nano-materials (i.e. inks) on its surface, due to a large mismatch in coefficients of thermal expansion. The result is the active ejection of the inks from the stamp to a spatially separated receiving substrate, thereby representing the printing step. In the following, a thermo-mechanical model is established to analytically obtain the temperature field, and the energy release rate for delamination at the interface between the stamp and ink in the form of a rigid plate. The normalized critical laser pulse time for interfacial delamination depends only on the normalized total heat flux at the interface and the normalized width of the ink structure. This scaling law has been verified by experiments and the finite element method.

Abstract:A one-dimensional analytic thermal model for the flexible electronic devices integrated with human skin under a constant and pulsed power is developed. The Fourier heat conduction equation is adopted for the flexible electronics devices while the Pennes bio-heat transfer equation is adopted for the skin tissue. Finite element analysis is performed to validate the analytic model through the comparison of temperature distributions in the system. The influences of geometric and loading parameters on the temperature increase under a pulsed power are investigated. It is shown that a small duty cycle can reduce the temperature increase of the system effectively. A thin substrate can reduce the device temperature but increase the skin surface temperature. The results presented may be helpful to optimize the design of flexible electronic devices to reduce the adverse thermal influences in bio-integrated applications.

Abstract:Inorganic Light-Emitting Diodes (ILEDs) are attractive for broad classes of applications in solid-state lighting, optical communication, and optogenetics due to their high efficiency, fast response, and long lifetime etc. The recently developed flexible ILED enables lots of novel applications especially in bio-integrated therapeutic devices that could be integrated with soft tissues well because they are able to be deformed like a rubber band. The low thermal conductivity of the elastomeric substrate in flexible ILEDs, which is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than that of the typical substrate for conventional ILEDs, imposes critical challenges in the thermal management. In this paper, an analytical model, validated by three dimensional finite element simulations, is developed to study the thermal properties of microscale inorganic LEDs with a rectangular shape. The temperature rise of ILED is derived analytically and agrees well with finite element simulations. A simple scaling law for the ILED temperature rise is then established in terms of the material and geometrical parameters. It is found that the ILED temperature rise depends on only 4 non-dimensional parameters. These results pave the basis for thermal management of flexible ILEDs and provide design guidelines for minimizing their adverse thermal effects on the performance as well as in applications.

Abstract:Determination of influences of various factors is important for improvement and optimization of a thermal management system for microelectronics. In this study, a series of orthogonal experiments and analysis of variance were performed on an LED cooling system which integrates thermoelectric cooler with microchannel heat sink using nanofluid as coolant. The significance of four factors, including nanofluid concentration, ambient temperature, nanofluid temperature, and power of the thermoelectric cooler, were evaluated. Substrate temperature was measured and temperature distribution of the LED was estimated. Results indicate that nanofluid demonstrated better cooling capacity compared with water. Results of difference analysis and analysis of variance indicate that all the four factors showed significant effects on the LED temperature, while the dominant factor was nanofluid concentration. The optimum nanofluid concentration was obtained. The variation of the nanofluid effect on the cooling performance with ambient temperature and nanofluid temperature were observed. The influence of dispersion stability of the nanofluid on the cooling performance was discussed.

Abstract:Common polymeric conductive electrodes, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET) coated with indium tin oxide, face a major challenge due to their low processing-temperature limits, attributed to PET's low glass transition temperature (Tg) of (70-80 degrees C). This limitation significantly narrows the scope of material selection, limits the processing techniques applicable to the low Tg, and hinders the ripened technology transfer from glass substrates to them. Addressing the temperature constraints of the flexible substrates is impactful yet underexplored, with broader implications for fields beyond photovoltaics. Here, a new thermal radiation annealing methodology is introduced to address this issue. By applying the above Tg radiation annealing in conjunction with thermoelectric cooling, highly ordered molecular packing on PET substrates is successfully created, which is exclusively unachievable due to PET's low thermal tolerance. As a result, in the context of perovskite solar cells, this approach enables the circumvention of high-temperature annealing limitations of PET substrates, leading to a remarkable flexible device efficiency of 22.61% and a record fill factor of 83.42%. This approach proves especially advantageous for advancing the field of flexible optoelectronic devices. The high-thermal tolerance flexible perovskite solar cells with excellent mechanical stability are successfully achieved by a new thermal radiation annealing methodology, which aids in the vertical growth of perovskite grains, reduction of grain boundaries, and decrease of lattice mismatch. These microstructural improvements are essential in enhancing the performance of flexible perovskite photovoltaics. image

Abstract:Spatially resolved dynamically reconfigurable control of thermal emission has comprehensive implications for fundamental science and technological applications, such as thermal camouflage and adaptive radiative heating/cooling. Materials and systems that can spatially control thermal emission with dynamic reconfigurability, simple manufacturability, and a large dynamic range have not been explored, so far. Here, a spatially resolved thermal emission control platform consisting of three components (a VO2 material with phase transition hysteresis, a thermal photonic device with a field-optimized planarized structure, and an optically controllable patterning system) is built and validated. This platform presents excellent merits such as spatially resolved control of thermal emission, multilevel (up to nine levels) emission control with a large dynamic range of the emissivity modulation (0.19 for the insulating phase and 0.91 for the metallic phase) over a broad bandwidth (8-14 mu m), and robust reconfigurability. The results demonstrate potential applications in the field of thermal photonics for information and energy harvesting.

Abstract:The applications of modern optoelectronic devices have been extended, and they now provide practical means for seamless real‐time monitoring of blood flow dynamics, by being integrated with flexible and stretchable wearable sensor platform technology. However, thermal management of these devices remains limited by undesired thermal energy originating from the heating of the light‐emitting diode. Specifically, the surface temperature of the optoelectronic device becomes very high compared to that of the adjacent biological tissue, causing challenges in skin–optoelectronics integration and functional deterioration of the light source. In this study, an optoelectronic module that integrates the light‐emitting diode, photodetector, and a thin metallic heat sink element for sustainable in situ thermal management is developed. Experimental and computational analysis results indicate that the proposed optoelectronic device has excellent heat dissipation capabilities for thermally safe long‐term usability, due to the high thermal conductivity of the device and film‐type geometrical design of the embedded heat sink for skin application. The proposed optoelectronic device architecture with metallic heat sink offers an ideal option for blood flow monitoring by providing both mechanical and thermal compatibility with biological tissue suitable for long‐term clinical applications. The optoelectronic device constituting microscale light‐emitting diode, photodetector, and heat sink, experimentally and theoretically, shows excellent heat dissipation due to high thermal conductivity and film‐type geometrical design of the embedded heat sink. The proposed optoelectronic device with metallic heat sink is an ideal blood flow monitor, which is mechanically and thermally compliant to skin for long‐term monitoring in clinical applications.
