Abstract:The delta phase of nickel-based superalloys plays an important role in mechanical properties and fracture behavior. The tensile tests were conducted to reveal the fracture mechanism of the d phase. The present study established a fracture model of the delta phase. The fracture of the delta phase occurs more easily when its long axis is closer to the loading axis. Compared to the needle-shaped delta phase, the granular delta phase is more difficult to fracture.

Abstract:As the key materials of aircraft engines, nickel-based superalloys have excellent comprehensive properties. Mircotensile experiments were carried out based on in situ digital image correlation (DIC) and in situ synchrotron radiation (SR) technique. The effects of the δ phase on the grain orientation, surface roughening, and strain localization were investigated. The results showed that the average kernel average misorientation (KAM) value of the fractured specimens increased significantly compared with that of the heat-treated specimens. The surface roughness decreased with an increasing volume fraction of the δ phase. The strain localization of specimens increased with the increasing ageing time. The size and volume fraction of voids gradually increased with the increase in plastic strain. Some small voids expanded into large voids with a complex morphology during micro-tensile deformation. The needle-like δ phase near the fracture broke into short rods, while the minor spherical δ phase did not break. The rod-like and needle-like δ phases provided channels for the propagation of the microcrack, and the accumulation of the microcrack eventually led to the fracture of specimens.

Abstract:Nickel-based superalloys are widely used in aerospace and other fields due to their excellent properties. In this study, the aging treatment and tensile tests of a GH4169 alloy were carried out. The effects of the δ phase on the alloy’s mechanical properties and fracture behavior were studied. The results showed that the appearance of the δ phase changed from a short rod shape to a needle shape with an increase in aging time. The precipitation method changed from a single mode of precipitation along the grain boundary to two modes of precipitation along the grain boundary and direct precipitation inside the grain. The yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloy first increased and then decreased with an increase in aging time and were related with the microstructure of the δ phase. The similar Widmanstatten structure was not conducive to the mechanical properties of the alloy. The distribution of the δ phase led to the generation of inhomogeneous strain and limited the surface roughening during plastic deformation. The voids initiated at the interface between the δ phase and the matrix γ phase or directly from the δ phase fracture site.

Abstract:The effects of γ′ phase volume fraction, morphology and size on tensile deformation behaviour of Ni-based superalloys at 300 K were studied using molecular dynamics simulation. The differences caused by different parameters were discussed in terms of atomic structure evolution, dislocation motion and stress–strain curve. The results showed that when the volume fraction of the γ′ phase was between 50% and 70%, the tensile strength and elongation increased with the volume fraction, but the variation trend was opposite when it was less than 50%. The cubic γ′ phase produced larger resistance to plastic deformation. Models with different-sized γ′ phases contributed to different fracture modes. Dislocation pile-up was avoided owing to the progressive movement of partial dislocations.

Effect of Δ Phase on Size Effect in Microtensile Deformation of a Nickel-Based Superalloy

Abstract:The plastic deformation behavior in microforming is difficult to predict due to the size effect. Studying the effect of δ phase on size effect in microtensile deformation of a nickel-based superalloy is of great significance because the size effect in microforming of superalloys has been less studied. In this paper, various solution heat treatments and aging heat treatments of a nickel-based superalloy were performed to obtain various grain sizes and δ phases. The microtensile tests were carried out to investigate the effect of the δ phase on the size effect and plastic deformation behavior. The results show that the average length and diameter of the δ phase significantly increase with the grain size and aging time. Additionally, the volume fraction of the δ phase significantly increases with the aging time. The δ phase plays a strengthening role in the mechanical properties during the microtensile deformation. The interaction of the grain orientation and δ phase resultes in a “smaller is stronger” phenomenon when 1 to 2 grains occur across the specimen thickness. A new size effect constitutive model is established by considering grain boundary strengthening, solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. The calculated flow stress values agree well with the experimental values. Fracture morphology analysis shows that the low stress triaxiality leads to ductile fracture with micropore formation, and high stress triaxiality results in intergranular fracture near the crack tip region.

Abstract:The tensile interruption tests of Nickel-based single crystal (NBSX) superalloys at room temperature were carried out to artificially introduce controllable levels of plastic damage, and linear and nonlinear ultrasonic nondestructive methods were used to evaluate it. The results indicate that ultrasonic nonlinear parameter β shows hypersensitivity to early tensile plastic damage compared with traditional linear parameters. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements of dislocation string length and dislocation density were conducted to calculate the theoretical predicted values of β by ultrasonic nonlinearity dislocation monopole model, and they are in well agreement with experimental results. In addition, the actuation of slip systems and evolution of dislocation configuration were observed under optical microscope (OM) and TEM. From the perspective of element distribution and energy, it is revealed that the plastic deformation mechanism of the NBSX superalloys at room temperature is anti-phase boundary (APB) dislocation pairs shear γ′ phase. The measurement results of macro mechanical properties manifested that accumulative tensile plastic deformation lead to increase of strength and decrease of plasticity.
Microstructure Characterization and Damage Coupled Constitutive Modeling of Nickel-Based Single-Crystal Alloy with Different Orientations

Abstract:The mechanical properties of nickel-based single-crystal superalloys are sensitive to temperature and orientation. The present work focuses on the stress and strain responses of a second-generation nickel-based superalloy at different temperatures and with different orientations. Microstructure and dislocation arrangements are observed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy of samples after tensile testing. The results reveal the tensile fracture failure modes and dislocation morphologies (braids, cells, stacking faults, etc.) for different temperatures and orientations. Although the [001] sample shows higher yield strength than the other two orientations, the strain hardening was more significant at [111] orientation and stress softening at [011] orientation due to their different dislocation mechanisms. In addition, a new hardening model and damage evolution law are proposed and coupled with a crystal plastic constitutive model. Numerical analysis results show that the proposed constitutive model can accurately fit the full stress-strain response from tensile experiments for different temperatures and orientations.

Abstract:The influence of orientation on the creep rupture properties of a single crystal superalloy DD6 under multiaxial stress was carried out at 980 degrees C and 400 MPa. A circumferential V-type notched specimen had been designed to investigate the effect of multiaxial stress state on the creep behavior. It was found that the creep lifetimes of the [111] oriented notched specimen were slightly longer than that of the [011] orientation and 1.36 times longer than that of the [001] orientation. The computational results showed that the strain and damage distribution revealed fourfold symmetry, double symmetry and threefold symmetry for [001], [011] and [111] orientation respectively, which was confirmed by experimental observation. At high temperature the creep anisotropy in three different orientations exhibited mainly in primary and secondary creep stages. Through the study of notched specimens by SEM, the morphology evolution of gamma'-phase proved that the directional coarsening was strongly dependent on the local effective stress and the direction of the local max principal stress with respect to loading axis. Fracture morphology displayed uneven cleavage configuration with multi-level feature, and the cleavage planes parallels (001), (011) and (111) crystal plane for [001], [011] and [111] orientation, respectively. The cleavage plane, which is attributed to the cracks propagated along the interfaces of gamma/gamma'phases, displayed square-like, rhombus-like and hexagon-like feature for [001], [011] and [111] orientation, respectively. Due to the higher density in dislocations of {111} planes, it is more easily as the secondary crack when the crack reach the {111} planes, which is thought to be the main reason of forming different feature on primary cleavage plane. Abstract:Uniaxial tensile tests of a typical Ni-based superalloy are conducted under the deformation temperature range of 920–1010°C and strain rate range of 0.01–0.001s−1. The effects of initial δ phase (Ni3Nb) on the hot tensile deformation behaviors and fracture characteristics are discussed in detail. The results show that: (1) For the studied Ni-based superalloy with a large amount of δ phase, the flow stress curves are composed of three distinct stages, i.e., work hardening stage, flow softening stage and the final fracture stage. (2) The initial δ phase has significant effects on the deformation behaviors of the studied superalloy. δ phase can cause the obvious work hardening at the beginning of hot deformation, and then accelerates the flow softening by promoting the dynamic recrystallization with further straining. With the increase of initial δ phase, the strain rate sensitivity coefficient decreases firstly and then increases. (3) The combined effects of localized necking and microvoid coalescence cause the final fracture of specimens. The increase of initial δ phase increases the density of nucleus for the formation of microvoids, and promotes the nucleation and coalescence of microvoids.

Abstract:In this work, to study the effects of stress triaxiality, temperature, and strain rate on the fracture behaviors of a single-crystal Nickel-base superalloy, a series of experiments over a temperature range of 293 to 1373 K, strain rate range of 0.001 to 4000/s, and stress triaxiality range of −0.6 to 1.1 are conducted. Anomalous peak of stress is noticed in the yield stress versus temperature curves, and strain rate effect on the anomalous peak of yield stress is analyzed. The anomalous peak shifts to higher temperature as the strain rate increases. Then the effects of stress triaxiality, temperature, and strain rate on its fracture behaviors, including strain to fracture, path of crack propagation, and fracture surface, are observed and analyzed. A valley of the fracture strain is formed in the fracture strain versus temperature curve over the selected temperature range. The micrograph of fracture surface is largely dependent on the temperature, stress triaxiality, and strain rate. Finally, the original Johnson-Cook (J-C) fracture criterion cannot describe the effect of stress triaxiality and temperature on the fracture behaviors of single-crystal Nickel-base superalloy. A modified J-C fracture criterion is developed, which takes the anomalous stress triaxiality and temperature effects on the fracture behaviors of single-crystal Nickel-base superalloy into account.

Abstract:The main aim of this work is to explore and analyze the crack initiation and propagation in nickel-based superalloy with film cooling holes (FCHs) during the in-situ tensile test. The stress value and position of crack initiation were determined by experiments and finite element analysis (FEA). Internal cracking of the metallic carbides (MC) composed by refractory elements has a greater impact on crack initiation and propagation. Both crack initiation and early expansion are Mode-I. The secondary crack spread in the opening type; however, the main crack spread in the form of slip separation. The material microstructure in crack tip plastic zone has a decisive effect on the crack propagation path. Finally, samples break along the {111} slip plane and perpendicular to the stress axis direction in the form of cross-cleavage.

Abstract:A high gamma ' volume fraction single-crystal superalloy specimens with various crystallographic orientations were tested under uniaxial tension/compression. The results show that there is apparent tension/compression asymmetry at the initial yielding (plastic strain < 0.2%, where no Kear-Wilsdorf lock and superlattice stacking fault generates during the deformation, so the existing models such as LCP and PPV cannot apply to two-phase nickel-based single-crystal superalloys). In this paper, the effect of elastic deformation on tension/compression asymmetry is discussed. A new constitutive model of two-phase nickel-based single-crystal superalloys is proposed to simulate the tension/compression asymmetry of yield strength. The model could well explain tension/compression asymmetry of two-phase alloy in [0 0 1] and [0 1 1] orientations, however it is not suitable for [1 1 1] orientation mainly due to the different slip mode.

Abstract:Results from compact tension specimens and scanning electronic microscopy are used to study the fracture characteristics of nickel-base single crystal superalloy DD3. Finite element analyses are also made to better understand the outcome. The experiments showed that the initiation and growth of cracks were dependent on the crystallographic orientation of specimens, and the fracture surfaces coincided with the slip planes, Three-dimensional stresses near the crack tip are obtained. The strain energy density criterion is applied to predict the fracture of the superalloy. Agreement with experiments is good.

Abstract:After solid solution treatment at 1335°C for 4 hours and cooling to room temperature at different rate, the nickel-based single crystal superalloy were made into three kinds of nickel-based single crystal superalloy materials containing different size γ′ phases, respectively. The tensile test of I-shaped specimens was carried out at 980°C, and their effect of γ′ phase microstructure on the tensile properties was studied. The results show that the yielding strength of the material air-cooled to room temperature was lower than that with cooling rate at 0.15°C/s, but both of them were lower than the yielding strength of original material. Little difference was found on the elastic modulus of I-shaped specimens made of three kinds of materials. When the cubic degree of the γ′ phase is higher and the size is larger, the tensile properties of the material is better, which can be attributed to the larger size and narrower channel of the matrix phase that lead to higher dislocation resistance.

Abstract:The evolution of microstructure and δ phase (Ni 3 Nb) in an aging-treated nickel-based superalloy is studied by hot compression tests. Combining with the detailed microstructure observation experiments, the influences of deformation parameters on the dynamic recrystallization (DRX), fracture behaviors and dissolution mechanism of δ phase are characterized and discussed. The results indicate that the DRX fraction increases with the strain rising or the strain rate declining. The discontinuous DRX is the main nucleation mechanism, and the continuous DRX nucleation occurs under the low strain rate. Furthermore, the promoting effect of DRX on the fracture behaviors of δ phase presents in two mechanisms. On the one hand, the DRXed grains grow towards the fractured δ phase and extrude δ phase, during which the fracture of δ phase is further promoted. On the other hand, the high-density dislocation regions first transform into subgrains and then into DRXed grains, and δ phase is twisted by the torsional forces of subgrain rotation and DRXed grain rotation, consequently expediting the fracture of δ phase. In addition, the poor Nb regions are found in the γ matrix near δ phase under the low strain. But with the further straining, the poor Nb regions around δ phase disappear, and the distribution of Nb element tends to be uniform. This is because that the dislocations around the phase boundary between γ matrix and δ phase act as the diffusion channels for Nb atoms, which benefits the diffusion of Nb atoms and therefore facilitates the dissolution of δ phase.

Abstract:DZ951G is a novel developed nickel-based directional solidified superalloy with an incipient high melting point and low density. Compared with DZ417G superalloy, DZ951G superalloy has a higher ultimate tensile strength. At intermediate temperatures, the plasticity and strength were both markedly improved, and an obviously anomalous yield behavior could be observed where the yield strength reached its maximum at 760 °C. Below 600 °C, two competitive modes of dislocations shearing γ′ particles existed, in which one was the formation of stacking faults and another was a/2 dislocations shearing. At intermediate temperatures, a transitional phase between shearing γ′ particles and bypassing appeared, and the fracture translated from brittle fracture into ductile fracture. Exceeding 900 °C, bypassing of dislocations was operated under thermal activation. Moreover, short continuous stacking faults still existed at 760 °C. Finally, the various dislocation configurations were rationally illuminated and explained with the intrinsic connection of mechanical properties.

Interfacial dislocation evolution and yield mechanism of nickel-based single crystal superalloy: A molecular dynamics research

Abstract:The evolution models of interfacial dislocation and yield mechanism are critical for the mechanical properties of nickel-based single crystal superalloy. In this paper, the deformation process of nickel-based single crystal superalloy was investigated through molecular dynamics methods. It was found that the interfacial dislocations decomposed and formed a special "cone-like" microstructural defect under uniaxial compressive loading, but this special structure would disappear with the increase in temperature. The special structure can significantly improve the yield strength due to its strong ability to hinder the slipping of dislocations. The yield mechanism is the decomposition of sessile dislocations and the shearing of the γ' phase by the Shockley dislocation for uniaxial compressive loading. In contrast, the yield mechanism is the shearing of the γ' phase by extended dislocation and the generation of antiphase boundary for uniaxial tensile loading. Although the temperature did not affect the yield mechanism, it could influence the yield strength by changing the dislocation density. Moreover, both the evolution models of interfacial dislocation and the yield mechanism exhibited tension-compression asymmetry, which eventually led to the tension-compression asymmetry of mechanical properties.

Abstract:Tensile fracture behavior of a single crystal nickel-based superalloy with different orientations and temperatures was studied. The tensile fracture surfaces and microstructure were analyzed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The results showed that, generally, this single crystal nickel-based superalloy exhibited obvious tensile anisotropy. Under the condition of room temperature, the different areas of crack nucleation, propagation and final fracture area were clearly observed and varied greatly in different orientations. At elevated temperature, the fracture surface presented mixed characteristics of holes and dimples and its fracture was dominated by micro-void coalescence. Fracture mechanism was discussed.
Dissolution Mechanisms and Kinetics of Δ Phase in an Aged Ni-based Superalloy in Hot Deformation Process

Abstract:High-temperature compressive experiments of a Ni-based superalloy containing δ phase (Ni3Nb) are conducted. The dynamic dissolution behavior of δ phase in hot deformation process is quantitatively investigated. The dissolution mechanisms of δ phase are analyzed by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and first-principles calculations. Results reveal that the dissolution of δ phase is accelerated with increasing deformation temperature or deformation degree. But, the dissolution of δ phase becomes weaken as the strain rate is raised. The shear modulus (G) and bulk modulus (B) of δ phase decrease with increasing temperature or reducing pressure. The positive Cauchy pressure (C12–C44) and the larger ratio of B/G (greater than 1.75) reveal that δ phase is ductile at high temperatures or pressures. The intense interactions between dislocations and δ phase induce the stress concentration and the rapid diffusion of Nb atoms, which accelerate the precipitation/dissolution of δ phase. A phenomenological model is established for depicting the dissolution behavior of δ phase in hot deformation process. The measured results are identical with the forecasted ones, which demonstrates the established model is feasible to accurately depict the dynamic dissolution behaviors of δ phase in hot deformation process.

At elevated temperature, the fracture surface presented mixed characteristics of holes and dimples and its fracture was dominated by micro-void coalescence. Fracture mechanism was discussed.
