Abstract:China’s oil fields have entered the stage of tertiary oil recovery. The development of oil displacement agents adapted to high temperature and high salt production environment has attracted extensive attention. In this paper, polyacrylamide, a traditional oil displacement agent, was modified, and acrylamide/2-acrylamyl-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid/sodium p-styrene sulfonate（AM/AMPS/SSS） terpolymer was prepared and optimized using aqueous solution polymerization. The effects of various reaction conditions on the apparent viscosity of the product aqueous solution were explored, and the optimum preparation conditions of terpolymer were obtained. The apparent viscosity, heat and salt resistance of terpolymer solution were studied by using rotary viscosimeter. Finally,AM/AMPS/SSS terpolymer with obvious heat and salt resistance and good thermal stability was obtained, which has a good application prospect in the current severe crude oil exploitation environment.

Abstract:A series of oil-soluble quadripolymers (denoted as AOSVs) have been synthesized to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil. The quadripolymers were characterized by H-1 NMR spectroscopy, GPC, and TGA to determine the structures and properties. By comparing the apparent viscosities of two different kinds of heavy oil before and after the addition of the quadripolymers, we found that the efficiency of the AOSVs for viscosity reduction was markedly elevated for almost the same molecular weight and mole ratio. Thermogravimetric tests and pumping transportation simulations showed that the AOSVs have good thermal stability up to 320 degrees C and strong shearing resistance. Furthermore, a heavy-component model and a copolymer model were built, and simulations of the interaction process were conducted. The results indicated that the copolymers changed the density of the crude oil by breaking down asphaltene and resin agglomerates to achieve a viscosity reduction.

Abstract:As flow improvers for heavy crude oil, two oil-soluble copolymers (DM-S-VA, DA-S-VA) were successfully synthesized and characterized by H-1 NMR and GPC. A rich alkyl chain and appropriate molecular weight of copolymer play fundamental role in viscosity reduction of heavy oil. Furthermore, synergistic effect of surfactants on polymers can promote the viscosity reduction, and the best formulation can increase the viscosity reduction rate to 78% to oil A. Comparing with the apparent viscosity of the different heavy oil mixing system in a wide shear rate range (0.1-200s(-1)), the results show good stability and viscosity reducing effect.

Abstract:In order to reduce the viscosity of heavy oil, the performance of emulsifying viscosity reducers is limited. In this study, a new kind of amphiphilic low molecular weight viscosity reducer was prepared by emulsion copolymerization of acrylamide (AM), acrylic acid (AA), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS), and Butene benzene (PB). The synthesis feasibility and viscosity reduction mechanism of viscosity reducer in heavy oil were explored using Materials Studio software from the perspective of molecular dynamics. The results of the molecular dynamics simulation revealed that the addition of viscosity reducer into heavy oil varied the potential energy, non-potential energy, density and hydrogen bond distribution of heavy oil. Benefiting from its structure, the benzene ring in PB was well embedded in the interlayer structure of asphaltene, contributing to weaken the network structure of the heavy oil. Moreover, the two strong polar groups (COO− and SO3−) of AA and AMPS, which constituted the branched chains of the viscosity reducer’s molecular structure, gradually disassembled the network structure from the ‘inward’ to the ‘outward’ of the heavy oil network structure, thereby driving heavy oil viscosity reduction (as clarified by molecular dynamics). Owing to its temperature resistance, this kind of new amphiphilic low molecular copolymer could be an effective viscosity reducer for heavy oil cold recovery at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Background Water-soluble polymers are increasingly attracting the attention of petroleum engineers for their excellent surface activity and viscosity-reducing properties in enhancing heavy oil recovery. However, the actual formation conditions are highly saline, for which we designed and synthesized a new salt-resistant water-soluble viscosity reducer. Methods Hydrophobically associating terpolymers, poly(Acrylamide/ N-vinyl caprolactam/ quaternary ammonium salt alkyl chains) (ANDs), were synthesized by free radical polymerization in an aqueous solution, and we obtained four different molecular weights of polymers by dialysis. Significant findings The results showed that the heavy oil viscosity reduction rates (VRR) of all four polymer solutions were above 98.3% under highly mineralized formation water and high-temperature reservoir conditions. Polymer AND-4 could show good salt tolerance at a high salt concentration of 5 × 104 mg/L NaCl and reached the best viscosity reduction rate of 99.07%. In addition, the polymers' thermal stability, hydrophobicity, surface activity, and salt resistance improved with the increasing molecular weight. Meanwhile, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and the emulsifying performance improved. This study also discussed the mechanism of viscosity reduction by different molecular weight viscosity reducers. Notably, compared with previous heavy oil viscosity reducers, this work provides a new water-soluble polymeric viscosity reducer with high efficiency and salt tolerance. It also facilitates the design and application of functionalized viscosity reducers for enhancing oil recovery.

Abstract:A high content of asphaltene and wax in crude oil leads to difficulties in the recovery and transportation of crude oil due to the precipitation of asphaltenes and the deposition of waxes. Comb-like polymers were found to be capable of inhibiting the aggregation of asphaltenes and crystallization of waxes. In this work, comb-like bipolymers of α-olefins/ultra-long chain (C18, C22 and C28) alkyl acrylate were synthesized and characterized by FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra. The results show that, for a model oil containing asphaltene, the initial precipitation point (IPP) of asphaltene was prolonged by UV, and the asphaltene particle size was reduced after adding the biopolymers, as revealed by dynamitic light scattering (DLS). The bipolymer containing the longer alkyl chain had a better asphaltene inhibition effect. However, DSC and rheological results show that the wax appearance temperature (WAT) of the typical high asphaltene and high wax content of crude oil was obviously reduced by adding bipolymers with shorter alkyl chains. The bipolymer (TDA2024-22) with a mediate alkyl chain (C22) reduced the viscosity and thixotropy of the crude oil by a much larger margin than others. Compared with the previously synthesized bipolymer with phenyl pendant (PDV-A-18), TDA2024-22 exhibited a better performance. Therefore, bipolymers with appropriate alkyl side chains can act as not only the asphaltene inhibitors but also wax inhibitors for high asphaltene and wax content of crude oil, which has great potential applications in the oil fields.

Synthesis and Mechanistic Investigation of an Amphiphilic Polymer in Enhancing Extra-Heavy Oil Recovery via Viscosity Reduction

Abstract:When applied to extra-heavy oil, conventional polymer surfactants exhibit poor efficacy in reducing viscosity and have limited adaptability. In this work, a novel amphiphilic polymer named PAADB was prepared by incorporating 2-acryloylamino-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS), benzyldimethyl [2-[(1-oxoallyl) zoxy] propyl] ammonium chloride (DML), and poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (BEM) into the main chain of acrylamide through free radical polymerization. PAADB exhibited outstanding interfacial activity, water-phase thickening ability, and emulsifying performance. The critical micelle concentration of PAADB was approximately 2500 mg/L, with a viscosity of 84.69 mPa·s at 50 °C. Additionally, interfacial tension experienced a notable decrease from 46.53 to 14.56 mN/m. At an optimal concentration of 4000 mg/L, PAADB reduced the viscosity of extra-heavy oil by over 92% across various temperatures and by more than 93% for different types of extra-heavy oil. PAADB demonstrated excellent emulsification ability and emulsion stability, effectively dispersing crude oil to create water-in-oil droplets measuring 35.33 μm in size. Meanwhile, molecular dynamics simulations further unveiled the viscosity reduction mechanism of PAADB. The hydrophilic groups within PAADB molecules are regularly distributed on the water interface, while the hydrophobic groups infiltrate the oil molecules to form a stable interfacial film. PAADB and asphaltene spontaneously form a sandwich structure, reducing intermolecular forces and disrupting the interlayer structure of asphaltene molecules. In general, this novel amphiphilic polymer demonstrates broad applicability and potential in extra-heavy oil recovery, providing valuable insights for the development of new heavy oil viscosity reducers (HOVRs).

Abstract:As is well known, resin and asphaltene greatly increase the viscosity of the oil, which causes difficulty for heavy oil to flow and to be displaced. Therefore, reducing the viscosity of heavy oil effectively is the key to enhance oil recovery. A hyperbranched copolymer named as HVR grafted with hydrophilic surfactant monomers, was synthesized and evaluated in this paper as an alternative to reduce the offshore heavy oil viscosity. The synthesis method of HVR through free-radical copolymerizing using the third generation polyamidoamine dendrimer, acrylamide, acrylic acid and surfactant monomers in deionized water was detailed in this paper. Thereupon the characterization of HVR were described by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The physical properties of HVR solution including apparent viscosity, oil viscosity reducing ability, interfacial tension were comprehensively studied. Otherwise the effect of HVR on sheet structure of asphaltene aggregate and asphaltene aggregation inhibition-dispersion activity were measured by X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer, respectively. The results indicate that apparent viscosities of HVR solution is relatively not high. For example, after shearing with a Waring blender at 3500 rpm for 20 s, the viscosity of 2500 ppm HVR solution is only 22.7 cP. However, the HVR solution has a relatively high viscosity remaining rate, which is approximately 58%. On the other hand, HVR solution has a good viscosity reducing ability on heavy oil. For the oil viscosities from 350 cP to 500 cP, the viscosity reduction rate of HVR at 2000 ppm is approximately 97% under the oil-water ratio of 3:7. In addition, the oil-water interfacial tension can be reduced by HVR solution at the concentration of 2500 ppm to 1.61 × 10−2 mN m−1. Comparing the asphaltene aggregates after interacting with HPAM and HVR, it illustrates that the layer spacing, interchain distance and diameter of the aromatic sheets are lager if interacting with HVR; meanwhile height of the aromatic clusters and effective number of aromatic sheets are smaller due to the reaction with HVR. In addition, if compared with the asphaltene treated by HPAM, with the increase of HVR concentration, the absorbance of asphaltene in toluene treated by HVR solution decreased significantly. Overall, this new hyperbranched copolymer shows potential for applications in heavy oil viscosity reduction.

Abstract:The high viscosity of heavy oil makes it difficult to realize its economic value. Therefore, improving the fluidity of heavy oil can effectively improve the economic benefit of the development of heavy oil resources. Oil-soluble viscosity reducers can utilize functional groups in monomers to break up asphaltene aggregates to improve the flow of crude oil. Graphene can be used to insert and split asphaltene aggregates through sliding phenomena and π–π interaction with colloidal asphaltene, thereby improving the fluidity of heavy oil. In this study, a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer was synthesized from lipophilic-modified graphene and a polymer viscosity reducer. The net viscosity reduction rate reached 80.0% at 400 ppm. Compared with a polymer viscosity reducer, the viscosity reduction effect of a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer was improved by about 7%. Structural characterization of a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer was characterized with infrared spectroscopy and a thermogravimetric test. The mechanism of a graphene nanocomposite viscosity reducer splitting asphaltene aggregates was verified with scanning electron microscopy. This study provides a theoretical and practical basis for the research and development of a novel nanocomposite viscosity reducer.

Molecular Design of the Amphiphilic Polymer as a Viscosity Reducer for Heavy Crude Oil: From Mesoscopic to Atomic Scale

Abstract:The use of an appropriate viscosity reducer is the key during the process of heavy crude oil exploitation. To design a new amphiphilic polymer as an efficient viscosity reducer, we combined the dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation and all-atom simulation in this work to reveal the viscosity reduction mechanism. Nine primary polymers were added into the oil–water system, in which the oil–water volume ratio was 4:1, by comparing the mean-square displacement (MSD) of asphaltene, aggregation ratio, the oil–water interfacial tension value, and the effects of nitrogen type, benzene ring morphology, and the alkyl side-chain length of the polymers on the properties of the system. The interaction mechanism was further revealed by analyzing the interaction energy between the asphaltene and the polymer molecules at the atomic scale. Finally, three kinds of polymers, P12, P22, and P31, which used polyacrylamide as a skeleton and were modified by pyrrolidone, a naphthalene ring, and the alkyl side chain without a −CH2 group, respectively, were selected to design a new amphiphilic polymer as a viscosity reducer. Abstract:The high viscosity of heavy oil is a vital parameter that hinders the heavy oil recovery efficiency. Viscosifying aqueous viscosity and reducing oil phase viscosity are the guiding principles under our current study to improve the offshore heavy-oil recovery using the cold production method. To achieve this goal, a novel amphiphilic macromolecule (HOA, already reported in our previous paper) has been synthesized by grafting three functional moieties onto the acrylamide backbone, which provides HOA both emulsifying and asphaltene dispersion capacities. To manifest the enhanced oil recovery (EOR) mechanisms of HOA, all experiments were carried out with hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) being a baseline. Consequently, when comparing the results of HPAM and HOA, it is found that the functional groups on HOA bring distinct properties to HOA, including both increasing displacing phase viscosity and reducing displaced phase viscosity. In detail, the bulk phase viscosity–concentration relationship proves that HOA generates significantly higher viscosity than HPAM at the same concentration, giving rise to a better mobility control performance. Furthermore, HPAM does not show any surface-active ability. In contrast, HOA lowers the oil–brine interfacial tension (IFT) from 37.8 to 1.4 mN/m and forms oil-in-water emulsion at a relatively low water content of 20%. As another means to reduce the viscosity by HOA, the asphaltene dispersion capacity reaches ∼32% by conducting ultraviolet (UV)-absorbance experiments. Furthermore, the underlying dispersion mechanism is confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, which demonstrate that HOA has loosened asphaltene cluster structure, thus reducing heavy oil viscosity. Overall, our laboratory results have paved the way for the future field application of HOA on offshore heavy oil oilfields.

Abstract:Heavy oil transportation has become a highly technical operation facing complex difficulties. One of the major difficulties in the pipeline transportation is the high viscosity that requires efficient and economical ways to deal with. The typical polymer viscosity reducers are a negative problem during oil refinement process for their chemical properties. The objective of this study is to seek small molecular compound, different from the traditional polymers, to reduce the viscosity of the crude oil. In this work, a spirocompound, 3,9-diphenyl-2,4,8,10-tetraoxa-spiro[ 5.5 ]undecane, was synthesized catalyzed by zeolite and modified zeolite, and the product was fully characterized by NMR, MS, and TG. Then, it was used as viscosity reducer for crude oil. The factors such as dosage and temperature on the viscosity behavior have been studied. The results showed a significant viscosity reduction at different temperature, and the most economical dosage is 500 ppm. The multiphenyl groups can interact with asphaltene by π - π stacking, and the spirostructure can fix the stacking in different direction, which can prevent the agglomeration of wax crystals.

Abstract:Since there are not many studies on the application of polymeric surfactants in viscosity reduction emulsification of heavy oil, a series of polyether carboxylic acid–sulfonate polymeric surfactants were synthesized. The viscosity reduction performance and the effect of different chain lengths on the viscosity reduction effect were also investigated. The viscosity reduction, emulsification, wetting, and foaming performance tests showed that the viscosity reduction performance of this series of polymeric surfactants was excellent, with the viscosity reduction rate exceeding 95%, and the viscosity was reduced to 97 mPa·s by the polymeric surfactant with a molecular weight of 600 polyethers. It was also concluded that among the three surfactants with different side chains, the polymeric surfactant with a polyether molecular weight of 600, which is the medium side-chain length, had the best viscosity reduction performance. The study showed that the polyether carboxylic acid–sulfonate polymer surfactant had a promising application in the viscosity reduction of heavy oil.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the formation of bitumen during the drilling of the H oilfield in Iraq. The high viscosity and strong adhesion properties of bitumen can influence the drilling operations. Some complex problems include paste screening, and drill pipe sticking, which cause huge economic losses. Therefore, it is necessary to effectively reduce the bitumen viscosity. The contribution of a single subcomponent of bitumen to the viscosity can vary, and the combined effect of different components of bitumen on the viscosity remains unclear. Furthermore, the mechanism of viscosity reduction remains unclear. In this study, the effects of organic solvents on the viscosity of bitumen were studied, and toluene was selected as the best organic solvent. The results showed that aromatics/resins, aromatics/asphaltenes, and resin/asphaltenes can help increase the bitumen viscosity. Novel methods, including the use of nanoparticles, ethyl cellulose, and the quaternary ammonium salt of heptadecenyl hydroxyethyl imidazoline (QASHI), were proposed to decrease the viscosity. TiO2 and CuO nanoparticles were chosen, and the main factors influencing the viscosity, such as the particle type, concentration, particle size, temperature, and shear rate, were analysed. The results show that the bitumen viscosity decreases with the increase in the concentrations of ethyl cellulose and QASHI. A synergistic effect between ethyl cellulose and QASHI was found with an optimal concentrations of ethyl cellulose and QASHI (1000 and 1600 mg L-1). A synergistic effect was also observed when nanoparticles, ethyl cellulose, and QASHI were used in combination. This paper reports the micro-mechanism whereby the viscosity of bitumen is decreased.

Abstract:This paper discussed the selection of functional monomers and optimal synthesis conditions for hyperbranched copolymer named as HVR, a novel polymer flooding chemical, intended to enhance offshore heavy oil recovery. The potential application of HVR as a polymer for oil displacement was also evaluated. Through experiments and molecular simulations, functional monomers AOS and OP-10 for Bohai heavy oil were screened out due to their high viscosity reduction rates for oil, both above 90%. Moreover, the interaction energy calculation results suggested that AOS and OP-10 were more likely to spontaneously disperse asphaltene aggregation. Furthermore, the influence of various factors on the synthesis of HVR was discussed using orthogonal design, and optimal synthesis conditions were determined. The optimal conditions for HVR synthesis are as follows: polymerization concentration of 30 wt %, initiator dosage of 1 wt %, initiation temperature of 50 °C, and system pH of 7; the sum of OP-10 and AOS accounts for 29.9 wt %, with a molar ratio of 1:1; the total amount of AM and AA accounts for 79.9 wt %, with a mole ratio of 6.5:3.5; and 3.0 G PAMAM accounts for 0.2 wt %. Moreover, HVR demonstrated good mobility control capacity and improved the recovery of heavy oil significantly in core flooding tests. Injecting a slug of 0.3 PV of HVR led to the additional recovery of 21.96 and 16.04% for oil viscosities of 350 and 500 cP, respectively. Notably, HVR’s additional recovery was over 7% higher than that of conventional hydrophobically associating polymer. These findings highlight the potential of HVR as a novel polymer to enhance the heavy oil recovery.

Abstract:Amphiphilic polymers represent significant ability in emulsifying crude oil during the displacement, enabling effective control the oil/water interface mobility and reduction of heavy oil viscosity. Herein, an amphiphilic polymer, named PMC16, was copolymerization using by hydrophobic monomer C16DMAAC, along with acrylamide and acrylic acid as comonomers. The structure of PMC16 was identified by 1 H NMR, and FT-IR. The potential of PMC16 for oil recovery enhancement was evaluated through assessments of fluid viscoelasticity, reduction in oil viscosity, wettability alternation and interfacial activity between heavy oil and PMC16. The results reveal that PMC16 showed well shear resistance due to the hydrophobic association between its molecular chains. In addition, the PMC16 can effectively decrease the viscosity of the oil phase through emulsification. The viscosity reduction achieved by PMC16 for heavy oil surpasses 95% under the condition of 60 °C, oil–water ratio of 3:7 and a concentration of 3000 mg/L. Additionally, PMC16 solution induces a shift in the wettability of solid surfaces towards water-wet characteristics, with the oil droplet contact angle reducing from 125° to 54°. Such wettability transformation proves advantageous for spontaneous imbibition, especially when considering capillary force as the driving mechanism. Furthermore, the results of oil displacement performance experiments substantiated that PMC16 contributed to a 17.9% increase in the recovery rate of heavy oil. The utilization of PMC16 holds significant theoretical importance in augmenting the recovery of heavy oil.

Abstract:A molecular modified polyacrylamide with Gemini surfactant monomers, named as HA1, was evaluated in this paper as an alternative to enhance the offshore heavy oil recovery. The physical properties of HA1 solution including apparent viscosity, rheological properties, static adsorption, interfacial activities (IFT, interfacial visco-elasticity and contact angle), emulsification ability, as well as oil recovery capacity were comprehensively investigated. Our results indicate that due to the hydrophobic and Gemini surfactant monomers on the acrylamide backbone, this novel amphiphilic polymer possesses more advanced functions than conventional polymers. HA1 demonstrates pronounced aqueous-phase viscosifying ability by forming 3D network in solution when the concentration is above CAC. In addition, the IFT, interfacial visco-elasticity and contact angle response illustrate that HA1 interacts strongly with the oil-phase which gives rise to its significant interfacial activity. Thereby, HA1 is able to reduce the heavy oil viscosity by emulsifying oil into water phase even at relatively low water content (20%) and also avoids dehydration difficulty by reducing the oil-brine interfacial rigidity. Furthermore, the asphaltene morphology change due to HA1 observed by SEM and AFM proves that HA1 can disperse the asphaltene aggregates in the crude oil, leading to a direct reduction of the heavy oil viscosity. At last, the coreflooding in an artificially synthesized triple-layered porous media shows that HA1 gives rise to an additional oil recovery of 27.04%, at the optimum concentration of 1600 ppm, by improving sweep efficiency, microscopic efficiency and dispersion of the asphaltene aggregates. Therefore, the potential of HA1 to enhance heavy oil recovery is comparable to traditional multi-component polymer-surfactant flooding. Since HA1 is single-component, it can also mitigate incompatibility issues like chromatography separation and surfactant-polymer interactions. Overall, this new self-assembly system shows potential for applications in heavy oil recovery.

Improving Heavy Oil Production Using Viscosity Reducers

Abstract:Abstract Chemicals for viscosity reduction play an important role in improving heavy oil production amongst other more commonly used technologies, such as crude oil heating by steam, and oil dilution with solvents. The viscosity reducer is able to dissolve in aqueous solutions, which makes it easy to handle and implement in wellbore lifting, huff-n-puff or well-to-well injection. In this work, eleven heavy oil viscosity reducers originally in emulsion form were investigated against a degassed conventional heavy oil with a viscosity of 246 mPa.s at 60°C. They were evaluated in terms of compatibility with high salinity water, interfacial tension, static adsorption onto carbonate core powders, viscosity reduction, micromodel displacement, and coreflooding displacement. The viscosity reducers present respectively either excellent or good compatibility with a high salinity brine of 57,760 mg/L total dissolved solids (TDS). The slight difference in compatibility did not affect wate/oil interfacial tension but affect significantly the static adsorption onto carbonates. Significant heavy oil viscosity reduction was observed when mixed with 2 wt% viscosity reducers at a water-cut of 30%. Among eleven viscosity reducers, one reduced the viscosity by 82%, three by 60% to 70%, four by 50% to 60%, and three by 25% to 50%. Micromodel displacement presented consistent trend in oil recovery, ranging between 10% and 50% beyond waterflooding. Coreflooding displacement showed that the selected viscosity reducer (HOVR10) in solution increased heavy oil production by 20.3%. Efficient viscosity reducers provide an economical way to improve heavy oil productoin. They would reduce the energy consumption in producing heavy oil from the subsurface formation to surface facilities. As such, the application of heavy oil viscosity reducer would not only improve well productivity but also reduce operational costs.

Abstract:A series of amphiphilic copolymers (PIDs) were synthesized through free radical copolymerization of isobutyl acrylate (IBA) with N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAA). The structure, composition, and average molecular weights of these copolymers were characterized by 1 H NMR spectra, infrared spectra , elemental analyse, and gel permeation chromatography. The solubility and aggregation behavior of these copolymers in different solvents were studied. In addition, thermo-responsive behavior of water-soluble copolymers in water was investigated by means of transmittance tests and DLS tests. The demulsification experiment showed that PID demulsifiers had excellent demulsification efficiency toward super heavy oil emulsions. The dehydration ratio reached 92.69 % at a concentration of 400 mg·L −1 for 210 min at 80 °C. Combined with the morphological changes of water droplets and active substances during demulsification, the characteristics of viscosity and interfacial activity proved that the higher content of lipophilic segments in PID copolymer could facilitate the diffusion of demulsifiers at the oil-water interface and accelerate the condensation of water droplets. Therefore, it is envisioned that this heavy oil demulsifiers with excellent demulsification performance and clean water phase will have promising prospects.

Abstract:Abstract Oil is a critical raw material for energy and industry, the depletion of conventional oil reserves necessitates efficient extraction and production of unconventional resources like acidic crude oil. However, its high viscosity poses significant challenges for transportation and processing. To address these challenges, this study developed a novel emulsion viscosity reducer. We designed a nanofluid based on a synergistic polyetheramine/nanofluid system consisting of alkyl ethoxy polyglycosides (AEG) as a green surfactant, SiO 2 nanoparticles, and an organic alkali polyetheramine. The mixture was evaluated for its viscosity reduction and emulsification performance with acidic crude oi obtained from Qinghe oil production plant in Shengli Oilfield. The results showed that the optimized viscosity reducer achieved a remarkable reduction rate of 98.1% at 50◦C in crude oil viscosity from 6862 mPa·s to 129 mPa·s. This demonstrated the reducer effectively transformed acidic crude oil into a low viscosity oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion with high stability. Furthermore, the core imbibition simulation tests demonstrated that the viscosity reducer could improve the recovery of acidic crude oil from 29.6% to 49.4%, indicating the potential application of the optimized viscosity reducer in the exploitation of acidic crude oil. In conclusion, this study developed a novel emulsion viscosity reducer, which can reduce the viscosity and improve recovery of acidic crude oil by emulsifying into O/W emulsion. The optimized formula has potential for practical application in the exploitation of acidic crude oil.
