Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide exists in various types of waste streams. Herein, surface oxidized stainless steel (SOSS) was applied to electrochemically desulfurize sulfide-containing wastewater. The properties of SOSS were investigated via mutiple analytical approaches, including SEM, XRD, XPS, LSV and CV. The results showed that higher Ni content and larger effective area of SOSS improved the sulfide removal efficiency. The effects of some environmental factors (e.g., initial sulfide concentration, pH, and inorganic ions) on the kinetics of sulfide removal and the formation of reaction products were also investigated. During the subsequent five application cycles, the electrode still maintained high sulfide removal efficiencies (>79%) with each cycle lasting for 64 h. Though the formed elemental sulfur would load on the surface of SOSS, resulting in gradual passivation of the anode, it can be partially dissolved successfully by the cathodeic polarization at -0.38 v vs. RHE for 5 h, and the sulfide removal rate increased from 22.0x10(- 3 )h(- 1 )(the fifth cycle) to 30.7x1010(- 3 )h(- 1) (the sixth cycle). The results of this study showed a great potential for the treatment of sulfide-containing wastewater with a SOSS electrode.
Simultaneous SO2 Removal and CO2 Reduction in a Nano-Bivo4|cu-in Nanoalloy Photoelectrochemical Cell

Abstract:SO2 and CO2 emitted from using of fossil fuels are causing serious environmental issues. Herein we put forward a promising strategy to realize CO2 reduction and SO2 removal simultaneously through a photoelectrochemical (PEC) process based on nanoelectrodes. In the present work, SO2 was oxidized to SO42- on BiVO4 photoanode after being absorbed by NaHCO3 solutions. At the same time, CO2 reduction occurred on nanoflower-like copper-indium alloy cathode. The absorption efficiency of SO2 was greater than 95%, and SO32- was oxidized to SO42- with oxidation efficiency about 50% in 3 h. Moreover, the energy of SO2 was recycled to assist the CO2 reduction on the cathode, consequently, the photocurrent densities were increased at least 3 times after introducing SO2. CO2 reduction with CO and HCOOH as main products was improved significantly when SO2 removal was conducted simultaneously. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) experiments were also performed to study the adsorption and conversion of SO2 on BiVO4 nanoparticles. The proposed approach could efficiently remove SO2 and recycle the energy of it to reduce CO2 into useful chemicals. This work provides a sustainable strategy for dealing with CO2 and SO2 in the flue gas by combining desulfurization and CO2 reduction in one PEC cell using nanoelectrodes.
A Green Desulfurization Technique: Utilization of Flue Gas SO2 to Produce H2 Via a Photoelectrochemical Process Based on Mo-Doped BiVO4

Abstract:A green photoelectrochemical (PEC) process with simultaneous SO2 removal and H2 production has attracted an increasing attention. The proposed process uses flue gas SO2 to improve H2 production. The improvement of the efficiency of this process is necessary before it can become industrial viable. Herein, we reported a Mo modified BiVO4 photocatalysts for a simultaneous SO2 removal and H2 production. And the PEC performance could be significantly improved with doping and flue gas removal. The evolution rate of H2 and removal of SO2 could be enhanced by almost three times after Mo doping as compared with pristine BiVO4. The enhanced H2 production and SO2 removal is attributed to the improved bulk charge carrier transportation after Mo doping, and greatly enhanced oxidation reaction kinetics on the photoanode due to the formation of SO32− after SO2 absorption by the electrolyte. Due to the utilization of SO2 to improve the production of H2, the proposed PEC process may become a profitable desulfurization technique.

Abstract:Converting SO2 into H2S is of great importance in recovering sulfur from SO2 streams, and even across the sulfur chemistry. However, H2S will comproportionate with SO2, resulting in undesired sulfur deposition to impede SO2 reduction reaction. Herein, a new concept of electrolysis paradigm to produce H2S from SO2 was introduced, wherein a gas-permeable catalyst membrane (Au/PTFE) was designed to in situ synthesis and separate H2S from the electrolyte, avoiding sulfur deposition behavior. This catalyst membrane electrolysis demonstrates a good performance with H2S Faraday efficiency of 99.6 % and separation efficiency of 99.1 %, with superior operational stability (exhibiting 38-hours continuous electrolysis without sulfur deposition). Computational studies and spectroscopic results reveal that S0 is the key intermediate for H2S production from SO2. The in situ separation of H2S not only prevents the S0 formation but also helps to self-clean the catalyst surface.

Abstract:The effect of Mn powder addition on the simultaneous removal of SO2 and NO coupled with FeII(EDTA) absorption was investigated in this work. In the NO absorption system with FeII(EDTA), SO2 reduced FeII(EDTA)-NO to FeII(EDTA) with a reduction efficiency reaching 88.5% under the conditions of 4000 mg/m3 SO2, pH 8.0, 44 °C, and the flow rate of 1.2 L/min within 60 min. Introducing 0.1 M Mn powder with SO2 increased the FeII(EDTA)-NO reduction efficiency to 96.8% within 5 min. SO2 was also removed by reducing FeII(EDTA)-NO and converted into SO42- at a removal efficiency of 100%. After adding Mn powder, NO was removed through the following reaction: $$ 5\mathrm{Mn}+2{\mathrm{Fe}}^{\mathrm{II}}\left(\mathrm{EDTA}\right)-\mathrm{NO}+12{\mathrm{H}}^{+}\longrightarrow 2{\mathrm{Fe}}^{\mathrm{II}}\left(\mathrm{EDTA}\right)+5{\mathrm{Mn}}^{2+}+2{\mathrm{NH}}_4^{+}+2{\mathrm{H}}_2\mathrm{O} $$ . Mn powder functioned as a reductant to regenerate the absorption of solution, and the coordinated NO in FeII(EDTA)-NO was reduced to NH4+. The resource utilization rate of N reached approximately 77.2%. The integrated technology is a potential solution for flue gas treatment in industrial sectors with coal-fired power plants and industrial boiler.

Abstract:SO2 removal is critical to flue gas purification. However, based on performance and cost, materials under development are hardly adequate substitutes for active carbon-based materials. Here, we engineered biomass-derived nanostructured carbon nanofibers integrated with highly dispersed bimetallic Ti/CoOx nanoparticles through the thermal transition of metal-phenolic functionalized industrial leather wastes for synergistic SO2 adsorption and in situ catalytic conversion. The generation of surface-SO32- and peroxide species (O22-) by Ti/CoOx achieved catalytic conversion of adsorbed SO2 into value-added liquid H2SO4, which can be discharged from porous nanofibers. This approach can also avoid the accumulation of the adsorbed SO2, thereby achieving high desulfurization activity and a long operating life over 6000 min, preceding current state-of-the-art active carbon-based desulfurization materials. Combined with the techno-economic and carbon footprint analysis from 36 areas in China, we demonstrated an economically viable and scalable solution for real-world SO2 removal on the industrial scale.
Efficient SO 2 Removal and Highly Synergistic H 2 O 2 Production Based on a Novel Dual-Function Photoelectrocatalytic System

Abstract:The direct conversion of SO2 to SO3 is rather difficult for flue gas desulfurization due to its inert dynamic with high reaction activation energy, and the absorption by wet limestone-gypsum also needs the forced oxidation of O2 to oxidize sulfite to sulfate, which is necessary for additional aeration. Here, we propose a method to remove SO2 with highly synergistic H2O2 production based on a novel dual-function photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system in which the jointed spontaneous reaction of desulfurization and H2O2 production was integrated instead of nonspontaneous reaction of O2 to H2O2. SO2 was absorbed by alkali liquor then oxidized quickly into SO42– by a nanorod α-Fe2O3 photoanode, which possessed high alkali corrosion resistance and electron transport properties. H2O2 was produced simultaneously in the cathode chamber on a gas diffusion electrode and was remarkably boosted by the conversion reaction of SO32– to SO42– in the anode chamber in which the released chemical energy was effectively used to increase H2O2. The photocurrent density increased by 40% up to 1.2 mA·cm–2, and the H2O2 evolution rate achieved 58.8 μmol·L–1·h–1·cm–2 with the synergistic treatment of SO2, which is about five times than that without SO2. Abstract:A Janus photocathode of asymmetric wettability with hydrophobic oxygen storage layer and hydrophilic catalyst layer was successfully fabricated by graphite felt (GF) polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-hydrophobization and a subsequent hollow sphere NiFe 2 O 4 @ZnFe 2 O 4 (NF@ZF) Z-scheme photocatalysts coating on the other side of GF. The designed Janus electrode showed significantly higher H 2 O 2 production than hydrophilic (NF@ZF/GF) and hydrophobic (NF@ZF/PTFE/GF) electrodes, and achieved a higher faradaic efficiency of 72%, as well as a record H 2 O 2 production rate of 255.9 mg·L −1 ∙h −1 , while maintaining a stable photoelectrochemical performance for 9 h at 2.8 mA∙cm −2 in Na 2 SO 4 solution. The two-electrode co-photoelectrolysis system by coupling the ORR with inorganic arsenic/organoarsenic oxidation can simultaneously produce H 2 O 2 at Janus photocathode and As (V) at Fe anode under a low energy consumption (a cell voltage of only 0.7 V), respectively, and then the generated As (V) could be rapidly removed (above 93%) by adsorption onto Fe (III) (hydro)oxides.

Abstract:A series of hybrid films were designed and fabricated by in situ growth of Ag2S nanoparticles with varying content on BiVO4 nanosheets deposited on stainless steel mesh. The formation of a p-n heterojunction between Ag2S and BiVO4 enabled an extended spectral response range and facilitated the separation of charge carriers through a single directional pathway for electron transport. Exploiting these advantages, Ag2S/BiVO4 composites were employed in various photocatalytic applications under simulated solar irradiation. The results demonstrated, in terms of water purification, that the composite not only possessed photocatalytic ability to degrade RhB or Cr(VI) individually but also exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic efficiency in simultaneously removing mixed pollutants containing RhB and Cr(VI). In terms of CO2 conversion, Ag2S/BiVO4 also displayed a stronger photocatalysis capability compared to pure BiVO4 film. Furthermore, the immobilized Ag2S/BiVO4 film exhibited improved mechanical strength and long-term stability, making it highly suitable for practical applications.
H2S Involved Photocatalytic System: A Novel Syngas Production Strategy by Boosting the Photoreduction of CO2 While Recovering Hydrogen from the Environmental Toxicant

Abstract:Simultaneous treatment of CO2 and H2S by photocatalytic technology is of great significance in mitigating the greenhouse effect and environmental hazards, while producing valuable solar fuels at the same time. In this study, well‐defined CdS/TiO2:Cu hollow spheres with highly dispersed heterointerfaces are successfully constructed for photoreduction of CO2 in presence of in situ generated H2S. Benefiting from the consumption of photo‐generated holes (h+) and large production of protons by H2S decomposition, the generation rates of CO (781.3 µmol·g−1∙h−1, accounting for 94.9 v/v% of CO2 reduction products) and H2 (5875.1 µmol·g−1∙h−1) increased significantly, which are 1.4 and 68.9 times higher than that of the system without H2S, respectively. Moreover, the remediation of photocorroded CdS by H2S prolonged the service life of the heterojunction, and maintained a CO generation rate of 96.8% after 4 cycles with or without H2S. Notably, as a potential syngas production strategy, by adjusting the initial concentration of Na2S, the ratio of CO and H2 is controlled from 1.07 to 7.21 to fulfill the demands of different chemical synthesis. This strategy opens up a new horizon for the combination of energy photocatalysis and environmental photocatalysis, which has great research and application prospects.
A novel SO3•- mediated photoelectrocatalytic system based on MoS2/Fe2O3 and CuNW@CF for the efficient treatment of sulfurous and nitrogenous oxides

Abstract:Sulfurous and nitrogenous oxides, including NOx and SO2, and the generated substances NOx- and SO32- widely exist in air and water as pollutants and thus are difficult to control in the environment. In this study, we designed a novel photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) system for the efficient conversion of SO2 and NOx in mixed gases and NOx- and SO32- in wastewater to N2 and SO42-, respectively, by activating SO32- to form SO3•-. The key ideas include the conversion of SO32- from SO2 and efficient activation of SO32- into SO3•- and further conversion into SO4•- by the MoS2/Fe2O3 photoanode. Simultaneously, NO3-/NO2- originating from NOx was rapidly reduced to NH4+ on the CuNW@CF cathode. Ultimately, the generated NH4+ was selectively oxidized to N2 by SO4•- and SO4•- was reduced to SO42-. The results indicated that 99.9 % of TN was removed and 100 % of SO32- was converted to harmless SO42-. This study provides new insights into the treatment of sulfurous and nitrogenous oxides in air and water.

Hydrophobic-treated yolk-shell SnS2@CSs Z-scheme confinement reactor for solar-electro-driven hydrogen peroxide production in neutral media

Abstract:The diffusion and adsorption properties of the O2/H2O corpuscles at active sites play a crucial role in the fast photo-electrocatalytic reaction of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. Herein, SnS2 nanosheets with abundant interfacial boundaries and large specific areas are encapsulated into hollow mesoporous carbon spheres (CSs) with flexibility, producing a yolk-shell SnS2@CSs Z-scheme photocatalyst. The nanoconfined microenvironment of SnS2@CSs could enrich O2/H2O in catalyst cavities, which allows sufficient internal O2 transfer, improving the surface chemistry of catalytic O2 to O2- conversion and increasing reaction kinetics. By shaping the mixture of SnS2@CSs and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) on carbon felt (CF) using the vacuum filtration method, the natural air-breathing gas diffusion photoelectrode (AGPE) was prepared, and it can achieve an accumulated concentration of H2O2 about 12 mM after a 10 h stability test from pure water at natural pH without using electrolyte and sacrificial agents. The H2O2 product is upgraded through one downstream route of conversion of H2O2 to sodium perborate. The improved H2O2 production performance could be ascribed to the combination of the confinement effect of SnS2@CSs and the rich triple phase interfaces with the continuous hydrophobic layer and hydrophilic layer to synergistically modulate the photoelectron catalytic microenvironment, which enhanced the transfer of O2 mass and offered a stronger affinity to oxygen bubbles. The strategy of combining the confined material with the air-breathing gas diffusion electrode equips a wide practical range of applications for the synthesis of high-yield hydrogen peroxide.

Abstract:Establishing an efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production system is an important part of facilitating the energy mix transition. By replacing the kinetically slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with the thermodynamically advantageous sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR), a hybrid water electrolysis system combining hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and SOR is constructed to reduce the total energy consumption of hydrogen production. Achieving electrochemical conversion of high concentration Na2S solution to sulfur at the anode while producing high purity hydrogen at the cathode. However, due to the toxic and corrosive effects of sulfion, it is still a challenge to construct catalysts that can catalyze efficiently and stably in high-concentration Na2S solution. To this end, the precursor material CuCoO nanosheets on carbon cloth (CuCoO/CC) was nitrided and vulcanized to produce CuCoN/CC and CuCoS/CC for HER and SOR, respectively. The hybrid water electrolysis system required only 0.75 V to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm-2 and to maintain the electrocatalytic stability for 144 h. In addition, the Faraday efficiency of both the cathode and anode is close to 100%. This research establishes an energy-saving hybrid water electrolysis system for hydrogen production and provides an effective solution for treating toxic waste.

Abstract:To avoid the potential risks during the transportation and storage of H2O2 as well as its low utilization efficiency in Fenton(-like) systems, we herein report a Cu-C3N4 layer coated Mo-BiVO4 photoanode that allows sunlight-induced on-site H2O2 production and in-situ activated Fenton-like process for pollutant remediation. Wherein Mo6+ serves as a dopant part to substitute V5+ in BiVO4 to enhance PEC two-electron water oxidation reaction to H2O2, and synchronously Cu imbedded in g-C3N4 hosting matrix catalytically activates Mo-BiVO4-evolved H2O2 to generate •OH at neutral condition via a Cu(I)-catalyzed Fenton-like reaction. As a result, the Mo-BiVO4 photoanode achieves on-site H2O2 production rate averaging 0.305 μmol min−1 cm−2 at 2.0 V vs. RHE under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm−2) in 1.5 M KHCO3 solution. The Cu-C3N4/Mo-BiVO4 composite photoanode delivers a removal efficiency of MB up to 93.5 % within 30 min, far superior to the g-C3N4/Mo-BiVO4 (59.8 %) or Mo-BiVO4 (56.4 %) control. Quenching experiments and EPR results prove that •OH and h+ are the primary active species in PEC degradation process. The integrated photoanodes proposed by this work can thereby guide the energy-saving PEC process for the on-site H2O2 evolution and in-situ Fenton system fabrication to boost practical utilization efficiency in environmental remediation.

Abstract:This work proposes a Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox mediated SO2 conversion to couple the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction to realize a low voltage hydrogen production. SO2 as a pollution gas can spontaneously reduce the Fe(III) into Fe(II), thus completing the continuity of Fe(II) electrooxidation reaction as well as the conversion of SO2 to sulfuric acid, which will be a good way to turn waste into treasure. Water electrolysis is recognized as a green hydrogen production technology, but the high voltage required for anodic oxygen evolution reaction restricts the practical application. In this work, a Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox mediated SO2 conversion is proposed to couple the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction to achieve sulfur dioxide conversion and hydrogen production at low voltage. The onset potential of Fe(II) electrooxidation to Fe(III) is as low as 0.75 VRHE (vs reversible hydrogen electrode). Ex situ ultraviolet spectroscopy (UV) spectrum and ion chromatography indicate that SO2 in electrolyte can reduce Fe(III) to Fe(II), completing the Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox cycle as well as the conversion of SO2 to sulfuric acid. The assembled flow cell electrolyzer requires a low operating voltage of 0.97 V at 10 mA cm−2 and shows good performance under both acidic and neutral conditions. This work proposes an innovative energy saving and environment friendly strategy for simultaneous hydrogen production and sulfur dioxide capture based on low‐cost catalyst materials.

Abstract:Simultaneous removal of NOx and SO2 is carried out by an oxidation-absorption process, which NO oxidized by active hydroxyl radicals (·OH) derived from catalytic decomposition of vaporized H2O2 over Fe3O4/TiO2 and then adsorbed by NaOH solution along with SO2. Fe3O4/TiO2 synthesized by wet impregnation method with an additional reduction under H2 atmosphere was characterized by XRD, FTIR, BET, XPS, and VSM analysis. Effects of H2O2 concentration, H2O2 injection rate, reaction temperature, gas flow rate, and flue gas component on simultaneous removal were investigated. The experimental results show that NO can be effectively oxidized by highly reactive ·OH radicals generated from H2O2 decomposition over Fe3O4/TiO2 catalyst, and removal efficiencies of 93.31% for NO, 85.90% for NOx, and 100% for SO2 were obtained. The surface zero-valent iron (Fe0) and divalent iron (Fe2+) are the key factors of the catalytic oxidation with hydroxyl radical. H2O2 adsorption and dissociation mechanism on catalyst surface was studied using DFT calculation. The calculation results demonstrate that H2O2 prefers to dissociate on iron containing surface, and ·OH radicals generation follow by Haber-Weiss (H–W) mechanism. The stable oxidative product of HNO2 and HNO3 were generated through NO/NO2 and H2O2 co-adsorption on the FeO/TiO2 (0 0 1) surface.

Near-Complete Suppression of Oxygen Evolution for Photoelectrochemical H2O Oxidative H2O2 Synthesis

Abstract:Solar energy-assisted water oxidative hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production on an anode combined with H2 production on a cathode increases the value of solar water splitting, but the challenge of the dominant oxidative product, O2, needs to be overcome. Here, we report a SnO2-x overlayer coated BiVO4 photoanode, which demonstrates the great ability to near-completely suppress O2 evolution for photoelectrochemical (PEC) H2O oxidative H2O2 evolution. Based on the surface hole accumulation measured by surface photovoltage, downward quasi-hole Fermi energy at the photoanode/electrolyte interface and thermodynamic Gibbs free energy between 2-electron and 4-electron competitive reactions, we are able to consider the photoinduced holes of BiVO4 that migrate to the SnO2-x overlayer kinetically favor H2O2 evolution with great selectivity by reduced band bending. The formation of H2O2 may be mediated by the formation of hydroxyl radicals (OH·), from 1-electron water oxidation reactions, as evidenced by spin-trapping electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies conducted herein. In addition to the H2O oxidative H2O2 evolution from PEC water splitting, the SnO2-x/BiVO4 photoanode can also inhibit H2O2 decomposition into O2 under either electrocatalysis or photocatalysis conditions for continuous H2O2 accumulation. Overall, the SnO2-x/BiVO4 photoanode achieves a Faraday efficiency (FE) of over 86% for H2O2 generation in a wide potential region (0.6-2.1 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE)) and an H2O2 evolution rate averaging 0.825 μmol/min/cm2 at 1.23 V vs RHE under AM 1.5 illumination, corresponding to a solar to H2O2 efficiency of ∼5.6%; this performance surpasses almost all previous solar energy-assisted H2O2 evolution performances. Because of the simultaneous production of H2O2 and H2 by solar water splitting in the PEC cells, our results highlight a potentially greener and more cost-effective approach for "solar-to-fuel" conversion.

Abstract:A novel process on simultaneous absorption of SO2 and NO from flue gas using ultrasound (US)/Fe(2+)Theat coactivated persulfate system was proposed. The influencing factors, active species, products and mechanism of SO2 and NO removal were investigated. The results indicate that US enhances NO removal due to enhancement of mass transfer and chemical reaction. US of 28 kHz is more effective than that of 40 kHz. NO removal efficiency increases with increasing persulfate concentration, ultrasonic power density and Fe2+ concentration (at high persulfate concentration). Solution pH, solution temperature and Fe2+ concentration (at low persulfate concentration) have double effect on NO removal. SO2 is completely removed in most of tested removal systems, except for using water absorption. US, Fe2+ and heat have a synergistic effect for activating persulfate to produce free radicals, and US/Fe(2+)iheat coactivated persulfate system achieves the highest NO removal efficiency..OH and SO(4)(-)l play a leading role for NO oxidation, and persulfate only plays a complementary role for NO oxidation. Photoelectrocatalytic peroxymonosulfate activation over CoFe 2 O 4 -BiVO 4 photoanode for environmental purification: Unveiling of multi-active sites, interfacial engineering and degradation pathways

Abstract:This work reported on the development of CoFe 2 O 4 -BiVO 4 photoanode based photoelectrocatalytic system collaborating with peroxymonosulfate activation for organic contaminants removal. CoFe 2 O 4 layer not only provided active sites for direct peroxymonosulfate activation but also accelerated charge separation process for the enhancement of photocurrent density and photoelectrocatalytic performance. Junction of CoFe 2 O 4 layer on BiVO 4 photoanode led to the improvement of photocurrent density to 4.43 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V RHE , which was approximately 4.06 times higher than that of pure BiVO 4 . Subsequently, the corresponding optimal degradation efficiency toward the tetracycline model contaminant achieved to be 89.1% with total organic carbon removal value of about 43.7% within 60 min. Moreover, the degradation rate constant of CoFe 2 O 4 -BiVO 4 photoanode in photoelectrocatalytic system was 0.037 min −1 , which was about 1.23, 2.64 and 3.70 times higher than the values in photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and PMS only based systems, respectively. In addition, radical scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance spectra indicated a synergy of radical and nonradical coupling process where •OH and 1 O 2 played vital roles during tetracycline degradation. Plausible photoelectrocatalytic mechanism and degradation pathway were proposed. This work provided an effective strategy to construct peroxymonosulfate assisted photoelectrocatalytic system toward green environmental applications.
