Abstract:The photocatalysis is a very promising technique to address the serious issues of environmental pollution. Among the common photocatalysts, the graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is widely used for the photodegradation of organic pollutants due to its proper band structure. To further improve the photocatalytic performance of g-C3N4, a novel composite photocatalyst of Co3O4/PT-C3N4 has been prepared by using a one-pot calcination method, in which cobalt tetroxide (Co3O4) nanoparticles as the cocatalyst are introduced on the surface of rectangular hollow g-C3N4 substrate (PT-Co3O4). As a result, the obtained composite photocatalyst (Co3O4/PT-C3N4) delivers an excellent photodegradation performance for diesel oil under a simulated sunlight, which can improve the separation efficiency of the photo-induced electron–hole pairs. The Co3O4/PT-C3N4 composite photocatalyst exhibits a high degradation efficiency of 96.27% after 2 h of visible light, which is much higher than that of the PT-C3N4 photocatalyst. Moreover, the composite photocatalyst can still maintain a high photodegradation efficiency after 10 cycles, exhibiting an excellent cyclic stability. The photo-induced carriers generated by the Co3O4/PT-C3N4 composite photocatalyst follow the Z-scheme heterojunction transfer mechanism. This work gives a fresh idea for the exploration of new high-performance photocatalyst for the treatment of organic environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Metal-free g-C3N4 is a promising candidate for the next-generation visible light-responsive photocatalyst; however, high recombination probability of the photogenerated charge carriers on g-C3N4 limits its photocatalytic activity. To further increase the intrinsic photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4, here, perylene tetracarboxylic diimide-g-C3N4 (PDI/GCN) heterojunctions are prepared by one-step imidization reaction between perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA) and g-C3N4 in aqueous solution. By the combination of various testing results, it is confirmed that the surface hybridization of PTCDA and g-C3N4 in the PDI/GCN heterojunctions via O=C-N-C=O covalent bonds occurs at lower PTCDA-to-g-C3N4 weight percentage. By selecting p-nitrophenol (PNP) and levofloxacin (LEV) as the target organic pollutants, the visible-light photocatalytic performance of the PDI/GCN heterojunctions is studied. It shows that the PDI/GCN heterojunction prepared at a PTCDA-to-g-C3N4 weight percentage of 1% exhibits remarkably higher visible-light photocatalytic degradation and mineralization ability toward aqueous target pollutants as compared with g-C3N4 and Degussa P25 TiO2. On the basis of the experimental results including photoelectrochemistry, indirect chemical probe, and electron spin resonance spectroscopy, it is verified that the surface hybridization in the heterojunctions is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity via accelerating the migration and separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, causing to produce more active species like O-center dot(2)-, h(vB)(+), and (OH)-O-center dot for deep oxidation of PNP or LEV to CO2 and inorganic anions.
In-situ route for the graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts with enhanced removal efficiency to emerging phenolic pollutants

Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Abstract:mpg-C3N4/anatase TiO2 with reactive {001} facets composites were synthesized via a facile ultrasonic dispersion method. Incorporation of mpg-C3N4 into anatase TiO2 was successfully confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The percentage of exposed {001} facets in TiO2 calculated from the Raman spectra was 80.6%. The microstructure and optical properties of the as-prepared samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The effects of mass ratios of mpg-C3N4/(TiO2 + mpg-C3N4) on the photocatalytic activities of the mpg-C3N4/TiO2 composites were investigated. The photocatalytic experiments indicated that the mpg-C3N4/TiO2 composites showed a much higher photocatalytic activity than the pristine TiO2 and mpg-C3N4 for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under UV light and visible light irradiation. This enhancement should be attributed to the reactive {001} facets of TiO2 and the heterojunction formed at the interface between anatase TiO2 and mpg-C3N4, thus resulting in a much lower recombination rate of the photoinduced electrons and holes. Compared with the decolorization process, mineralization is slower. The degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol suggests that the dye sensitization is not the main cause of dye degradation. In addition, the quenching effects of different scavengers proved that the superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) and holes (h(+)) were the main factors for the improved photoactivity under UV-light, while the superoxide radicals (O-center dot(2)-) play important roles in the photocatalytic reaction under visible light irradiation. Repeatability experiments of MB degradation suggest that the mpg-C3N4/TiO2 composites have high stability. The photocatalytic degradations of MB, RhB and MO were measured under UV and visible light irradiation and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency was found to be in the decreasing order of RhB > MB > MO. These results indicate that the incorporation of mpg-C3N4 into anatase TiO2 with reactive {001} facets is an effective method to improve the photocatalytic activity under both UV and visible light.

Abstract:The development of efficient catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of volatile organic compounds is paramount. Herein, urchin-like TiO 2 nanospheres were coupled with nitrogen and sulfur co-doped graphene quantum dots (NSGDs) through a facile impregnation method. The resulting NSGDs/TiO 2 composite forms an S-scheme heterojunction, owing to work function difference, which facilitates the effective separation of photogenerated charge carriers. The NSGDs/TiO 2 exhibits an impressive 99.8 % toluene conversion efficiency and 50 % mineralization efficiency during 6 h of visible light illumination. Furthermore, this composite retains its catalytic activity over five consecutive cycles. The remarkable performance is attributed to the augmented visible light absorption and reduced recombination of photogenerated carriers, stemming from the increased electron density of Ti and the establishment of an internal electric field. Photogenerated holes, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals are identified as the key active species in this process.

Abstract:Limited visible-light absorption and high recombination rate of photogenerated charges are two main drawbacks in g-C3N4-based photocatalysts. To solve these problems, g-C3N4/nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQDs)/TiO2 ternary heterojunctions were facilely prepared via a one-step calcining method. The morphology, structure, optical and electrochemical properties of g-C3N4/NGQDs/TiO2 were characterized and explored. The optimal g-C3N4/NGQDs/TiO2 composite exhibits enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance of ciprofloxacin (CIP) compared with the as-prepared g-C3N4, TiO2(P25) and g-C3N4/TiO2 heterojunction under visible light irradiation. The apparent rate constant of the composite is around 6.43, 4.03 and 2.30 times higher than those of g-C3N4, TiO2 and g-C3N4/TiO2, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency should be mainly attributed to the improvement of light absorption and charge separation and transfer efficiency, originating from the narrow band gap and high charge carrier mobility. The active species trapping experiments results showed that the h+ and ·O2− were the main active species in the degradation process. A possible photocatalytic reaction mechanism of the g-C3N4/NGQDs/TiO2 composite for the enhanced degradation of CIP under visible light irradiation was also proposed.

Abstract:The application of catalysts is one of the most effective methods in the oil refining, chemical, medical, environmental protection, and other industries. In this work, carbon dots (CDs) were selected as an initiator and doped into the main catalyst, Zn0.2Cd0.8S, and a novel Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CD composite catalyst with a nanoflower structure was successfully obtained. The synthesized composites (Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CDs) were characterized by means of SEM, TEM, XRD, FT-IR, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. Transient photocurrent response and Nyquist curve analysis further proved that the carrier separation efficiency of the composite catalyst was significantly improved. In addition, the photocatalytic activity of Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CDs for rhodamine B removal from aqueous solution was tested under visible-light irradiation. When the amount of Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CDs composite catalyst reached 50 mg, the degradation rate of rhodamine B was 79.35%. Finally, the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of the Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CDs complex was studied. CD doping enhances the adsorption capacity of Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CDs composite catalysts due to the increase in surface area, effectively inducing charge delocalization and enhancing the photocatalytic capacity. Zn0.2Cd0.8S@CDs composites with low cost and high carrier separation efficiency have broad application prospects in the photocatalytic degradation of dyes.

Abstract:Expanded graphite (EG) is synthesized by chemical intercalation of natural graphite (NG) and rapid expansion at high temperature, with titanium n-butoxide (TNB) used as titanium source by a sol-gel method to prepare EG-TiO2 composite. The performances of the prepared EG-TiO2 composite are characterized by BET surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). To compare the photocatalytic activities of the EG-TiO2 composite, three kinds of dye solutions, methylene blue (MB), methylene orange (MO) and rhodamine B (RhB), and two kinds of light source, UV light and visible light (VL), are used. Comparing the results, it can be clearly seen that the degradation of all of the dye solutions under irradiation by UV light is much better than that under irradiation by visible light, and the decomposition of MB solution was better than that of both of MO and RhB solution.

Abstract:Traditional photocatalysts are difficile to conform the provision of visible light catalysis, conducive recycling and eminent efficiency, which limits their practical applications for decomposing organic pollutants in wastewater. Herein, a multi-layered porous hierarchical titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride (TiO2/g-C3N4) hybrid coating is in-situ generated on titanium (Ti) substrate by sequentially employing plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), alkali immersing and hydrothermal reaction. The as-prepared coating exhibits surpassing photocatalytic performance to decay Rhodamine B (RhB) than g-C3N4 and TiO2 photocatalysts under 5 W LED visible light with 240 h cyclic stability. Moreover, the electrons transport and Z-scheme mechanism for TiO2/g-C3N4 heterojunction is pursued to account for the ultralow recombination of photo-induced electron-hole and the enhanced catalytic properties. Not only that, it inhibits the secondary pollution which has further intensified its significance for degradation of organic pollution in sewage treatment systems.
Photocatalytic Enhancement of Floating Photocatalyst: Layer-by-layer Hybrid Carbonized Chitosan and Fe-N- Codoped TiO 2 on Fly Ash Cenospheres

Abstract:Due to the advantage of floating on water surface, floating photocatalysts show higher rates of radical formation and collection efficiencies. And they were expected to be used for solar remediation of non-stirred and non-oxygenated reservoirs. In this research, floating fly ash cenospheres (FAC) supported layer-by- layer hybrid carbonized chitosan and Fe-N-codoped TiO2 was prepared by a simple sol-gel method. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy(DRS), nitrogen adsorption analyses for Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area. It is indicated that Fe-N codoped narrowed the material's band gap, and the layer of carbonized chitosan (Cts) increased the catalyst's adsorption capacity and the absorption ability of visible light. Comparing with Fe-N-TiO2/FAC and N-TiO2/FAC, the composite photocatalyst show excellent performance on the degradation of RhB. Photodegradation rate of RhB by Fe-N-TiO2/FAC-Cts was 0.01018 min(-1), which is about 1.5 and 2.09 times higher than Fe-N-TiO2/FAC and N-TiO2/FAC under visible light irradiation in 240 min, respectively. The dye photosentization, capture of holes and electrons by Fe3+ ion, and synergistic effect of adsorption and photodegradation were attributed to the results for the improvement of photocatalytic performance. The floating photocatalyst can be reused for at least three consecutive times without any significant decrease on the degradation of Rhodamin B after each reuse. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this study, ternary catalyst g-C3N4/Ag2CO3/graphene oxide was synthesized through a simple chemical precipitation method at room temperature. The CN/AC/GO composite was employed to degrade antibiotics under visible light irradiation. And the results indicated that the composite possessed excellent photocatalytic performance, which could remove 81.6% tetracycline (TC) after 60 min of irradiation. The PL, EIS, PC and UV-vis DRS tests demonstrated that enhanced photocatalytic efficiency could be attributed to rapid charge transfer, low recombination rate of photo-induced electron-hole pairs, as well as superior light absorption capability. Moreover, three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectra (3D EEMs) were employed to further grasp the behaviors of TC molecules in the process of degradation reaction. In addition, the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was carried out to explore the intermediates during the photocatalytic reaction. Meanwhile, the influences of initial TC concentration, light source, supporting electrolytes and water sources were explored from the perspective of practical application. Furthermore, the appearance of a small amount of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) not only accelerated the charge transfer, but also improved the stability of catalyst. The composite also possessed high stability and reusability, which were essential in practical application.

Abstract:A heterostructured graphitic-carbon-nitride-nanosheets/copper(I) oxide (g-C3N4 nano sheets/Cu2O) composite was successfully prepared using a facile precipitation method by combining g-C3N4 nanosheets with Cu2O particle, which was successfully used as an visible-light photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics. It is found that this composite had higher photocatalytic activity than the Cu2O as well as the g-C3N4 nanosheets. Especially, the 30 wt% g-C3N4 nanosheets/Cu2O composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity and 92.1% of TC was degraded within 100 minutes and 83.3% of total organic carbon (TOC) was removed after the reaction for 120 min. In addition, it showed an excellent reusability, and the severe photocorrosion issue of Cu2O was suppressed significantly by combining it with g-C3N4 nanosheets. The high photodegradation efficiency of g-C3N4 nanosheets/Cu2O composite could be ascribed to the efficient interfacial charge transfer at the p-n heterojunction and synergistic effect between Cu2O and g-C3N4 nanosheets with the enhanced separation efficiency of photogenerated e--h+ pairs. In addition, the active species trapping experiments confirmed that the photo-generated h+ and •O2− were the main active species involved in the TC degradation under visible light.

Abstract:Development of low-cost, high-performance photocatalysts for the effective degradation of antibiotics in wastewater is critical for environmental remediation. In this work, titanium dioxide/zirconium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride (TiO2/ZrO2/g-C3N4) ternary composites are fabricated via a facile hydrothermal procedure, and photocatalytically active towards the degradation of berberine hydrochloride under visible light illumination. The performance is found to increase with the Ti:Zr atomic ratio in the nanocomposites, and obviously enhanced in comparison to that of the binary TiO2/g-C3N4 counterpart, due to the formation of type I/II heterojunctions that help separate the photogenerated electron-hole pairs and produce superoxide and hydroxy radicals. The mechanistic pathways are unraveled by a deliberate integration of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry measurements with theoretical calculations of the condensed Fukui index. Furthermore, the ecotoxicity of the reaction intermediates is examined by utilizing the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST) and quantitative structure activity relationship calculations (QSAR).

Abstract:Enhancing the efficiency of visible light degradation is important for the actual application of TiO2/SiO2 (Ti/Si) composite materials for waste water treatment. In this manuscript, graphdiyne-doped TiO2/SiO2 (Ti/Si/GDY) (the Ti/Si composite exhibits a spherical shape with a diameter between 200 and 500 nm) composite material was successfully prepared using a hydrothermal method, which was utilized as photocatalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution under visible light illumination. Studies showed that Ti/Si/GDY-0.8 wt% exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency (91.8%) under visible light illumination than other composite materials such as Ti/Si/GDY-0.6 wt% (87.9%), Ti/Si/GDY-1.0 wt% (85.9%), and bare Ti/Si composite (32.3%). Moreover, Ti/Si/GDY also showed a higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency than other carbon materials (graphene (GR) and carbon nanotube (CNT) composited Ti/Si (Ti/Si/GR, Ti/Si/CNT)). The studies of the possible mechanism for the degradation of MA indicated that h+ was the major substance for the smooth degradation of methylene blue. Such a high efficiency photocatalyst might be also useful for the degradation of other contaminates in waste water or air.

Abstract:The development of visible-light-active photocatalysts with high performance has been regarded as a promising way to address environmental wastewater issues. In this work, a highly efficient g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2 ternary heterojunction photocatalyst with hollow structure has been fabricated using a step-by-step self-assembly strategy, which demonstrates excellent photocatalytic performance under visible light and removes various water-soluble organic pollutants effectively. The photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 20-g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2-10 against rhodamine B (RhB) is found to be 29.8 times higher than the pristine g-C3N4 within 90 minutes of visible light irradiation attributed to the active species of •O2- and h+. Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry results suggest that the degradation pathway of RhB involves main steps such as N-de-ethylation, chromophore cleavage, ring opening, and mineralization. A series of characterization analyses, combined with the observed enhanced photocatalytic performance, indicates that g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2 ternary heterojunction benefits from the rapid transport and separation of photogenerated carriers facilitated by the formation of heterointerface. Furthermore, the g-C3N4/CdS/TiO2 ternary heterojunction exhibits favorable stability, with 88.1% degradation efficiency after five cycles of degradation experiments. This work provides novel insights into the preparation and application of ternary heterojunctions with superior photocatalytic performance for eliminating organic pollutants from wastewater.

Abstract:The two-stage removal process of tetracycline (TC) in aqueous solutions using a novel photocatalyst based on nano-zero-valent iron (NZVI), g-C3N4 and expanded graphite by carbon layer (EGC) is reported for the first time. The composite (NZVI/g-C3N4@EGC) exhibits remarkable adsorption, reduction ability and visible light activity over the reaction course. Compared with pristine g-C3N4 (25.9%) and pure NZVI (45.9%), NZVI/g-C3N4@EGC achieves high degradation efficiency of TC (98.5%) due to the formation of a heterogeneous photo-Fenton system. This study shows that synergistic effects are achieved in the reaction system, including maintaining the reduction ability of NZVI and enhancing the photocatalytic activity of g-C3N4 by facilitating the separation of photogenerated electrons (e(-)) and holes (h(+)). TC removal involved a two-stage process of adsorption-reduction and photo-degradation. The quencher experiments determined that holes (h(+)) and superoxide radicals (O-2(-)) are the major reactive species in the degradation of TC. The degradation pathways of TC were proposed based on the analysis of the intermediates. In addition, NZVI/g-C3N4@EGC revealed a high stability in a five-cycle test and good magnetic properties for facile separation from aqueous solutions. From an application viewpoint, NZVI/g-C3N4@EGC has favorable prospects in the direction of the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotic wastewater.

Abstract:A type-II heterojunction photocatalyst H3PW12O40/TiO2-g-C3N4 is obtained by ultrasonic method. The structure, morphology and optical property of the composites are studied by a series of characterizations. 20 wt.% H3PW12O40/TiO2-g-C3N4, the optimum composite, has superior photocatalytic efficiency for degrading rhodamine B (RhB) and p-nitrophenol (PNP) under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic performance improvement of H3PW12O40/TiO2-g-C3N4 ternary composite material is ascribed to enhanced adsorption capacity of organic contaminants and efficient separation of photoinduced carriers. Furthermore, we can conclude that h(+), center dot O-2(-), and center dot OH are the major active substances in the photocatalytic degradation process, which further provides the evidence for superior photocatalytic activity of H3PW12O40/TiO2-g-C3N4 composite material compared to bare g-C3N4. The H3PW12O40/TiO2-g-C3N4 composite displays excellent stability and recyclability, which can be reused for four times with only slight inactivation. Overall, this work puts forward a new direction for the fabrication g-C3N4-based visible-light-driven photocatalytic composite materials.
