Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.

Abstract:Pt‐based alloys are considered the universal choice among electrocatalysts for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, improving the electrocatalytic efficiency with the use of minimal amount of Pt is very challenging. A new strategy has been developed to fabricate a “double nanoporous” structure, in which nanoporous PtFe alloy (np‐PtFe) is embedded in nanoporous graphene (NPG), through in situ etching and acid leaching treatments. The np‐PtFe/NPG‐700 served as an effective bifunctional catalyst for both HER and ORR, exhibiting higher activity and stability than 20% Pt/C. Theoretical calculations reveal that the graphene nanopores not only play a vital role in improving the stability of the nanoporous PtFe alloy but also downshift the d‐band center of the PtFe alloy, thus improving the catalytic activity. The double nanoporous structure also provides numerous diffusion channels, which facilitated the mass and charge transport during HER and ORR.
Core/shell Au/CuPt Nanoparticles and Their Dual Electrocatalysis for Both Reduction and Oxidation Reactions.

Abstract:We report a facile synthesis of monodisperse core/shell 5/1.5 nm Au/CuPt nanoparticles by coreduction of platinum acetylacetonate and copper acetylacetonate in the presence of 5 nm Au nanoparticles. The CuPt alloy effect and core/shell interactions make these Au/CuPt nanoparticles a promising catalyst for both oxygen reduction reaction and methanol oxidation reaction in 0.1 M HClO4 solution. Their specific (mass) reduction and oxidation activities reach 2.72 mA/cm(2) (1500 mA/mg Pt) at 0.9 V and 0.755 mA/cm(2) (441 mA/mg Pt) at 0.8 V (vs reversible hydrogen electrode), respectively. Our studies show that the existence of the Au nanoparticle core not only minimizes the Pt usage but also improves the stability of the Au/CuPt catalyst for fuel cell reactions. The results suggest that the core/shell design is indeed effective for optimizing nanoparticle catalysis. The same concept may be extended to other multimetallic nanoparticle systems, making it possible to tune nanoparticle catalysis for many different chemical reactions.
Size Controllable Metal Nanoparticles Anchored on Nitrogen Doped Carbon for Electrocatalytic Energy Conversion

Abstract:Metal nanoparticles (NPs) are an important class of materials for electrocatalysis. Synthesis of metal NPs with uniform particle size below 10 nm without a capping agent is challenging due to the tendency of particle aggregation to minimize surface energy. Here we demonstrate that pyrolysis of a metal-TCNQ (TCNQ(-) = tetracyanoquinodimethane radical anion) compound can produce metal NPs with controllable particle sizes anchored on nitrogen doped carbon (denoted as MetalNC). NiNC and CoNC derived from Ni-TCNQ and Co-TCNQ with Ni and Co particle sizes below 10 nm were successfully prepared. NiNC, with a particle size of 8.8 nm, showed excellent catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution in an alkaline medium, reaching a catalytic current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 230 mV. CoNC, with a particle size of 1.8 nm, exhibited the capability of producing syngas by electrocatalytic CO2 reduction over a wide potential range in an acetonitrile medium containing 0.3 M H2O. An artificial photosynthesis system based on CoNC achieved faradaic efficiencies of over 70% for production of syngas and 22% for formate. This work demonstrates a general strategy to synthesize size controllable metal NPs supported on carbon materials for electrocatalytic energy conversion.
Multimetallic AuPd@Pd@Pt Core-Interlayer-shell Icosahedral Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Abstract:Using FePtAu nanoparticles (NPs) as an example, this Communication demonstrates a new structure-control strategy to tune and optimize NP catalysis. The presence of Au in FePtAu facilitates FePt structure transformation from chemically disordered face-centered cubic (fcc) structure to chemically ordered face-centered tetragonal (fct) structure, and further promotes formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR). The fct-FePtAu NPs have mass activity as high as 2809.9 mA/mg Pt and retain 92.5% of this activity after a 13 h stability test. They become the most efficient NP catalyst ever reported for FAOR. This structure-control strategy can be extended to other multimetallic NP systems, providing a general approach to advanced NP catalysts with desired activity and durability control for practical applications.

Abstract:To further enhance the catalytic activity and durability of nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), we synthesized a new class of 20 nm X 2 nm ternary alloy FePtM (M = Cu, Ni) nanorods (NRs) with controlled compositions. Supported on carbon support and treated with acetic acid as well as electrochemical etching, these FePtM NRs were converted into core/shell FePtM/Pt NRs. These core/shell NRs, especially FePtCu/Pt NRs, exhibited much improved ORR activity and durability. The Fe10Pt75Cu15 NRs showed a mass current densities of 1.034 A/mg(Pt) at 512 mV vs Ag/AgCl and 0.222 A/mg(Pt) at 557 mV vs Ag/AgCl, which are much higher than those for a commercial Pt catalyst (0.138 and 0.035 A/mg(Pv) respectively). Our controlled synthesis provides a general approach to core/shell NRs with enhanced catalysis for the ORR or other chemical reactions.
Seed-mediated Synthesis of Core/shell FePtM/FePt (M = Pd, Au) Nanowires and Their Electrocatalysis for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Abstract:We report a new seed-mediated growth of FePt over 2.5 nm wide FePtM (M = Pd, Au) nanowires (NWs) into core/shell FePtM/FePt NWs with controlled FePt shell thickness from 0.3 to 1.3 nm. These FePtM/FePt NWs show shell thickness and core composition-dependent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1 M HClO4. These core/shell FePtM/FePt NWs are generally more active and durable than the corresponding alloy NWs. Among FePtM/FePt NWs, FePt NWs, FePtPd NWs, and commercial Pt studied, the FePtPd/FePt NWs (0.8 nm shell) show the specific activity of 3.47 mA·cm(-2) and the mass activity of 1.68 A/mg Pt at 0.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), superior to all other NWs (less than 1.59 mA/cm(2) and 0.82 A/mg Pt for FePtAu/FePt and FePt) as well as the commercial Pt (0.24 mA/cm(2) and 0.141 A/mg Pt). The FePtM/FePt (0.8 nm shell) NWs are also stable in the ORR condition and show no activity decrease after 5000 potential sweeps between 0.4 and 0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl). They are the most efficient nanocatalyst ever reported for ORR.

Abstract:A novel porous Au@MIL-100(Fe) core-shell nanocatalyst with controllable MIL-100(Fe) shell thickness has been fabricated by using a versatile step-by-step fashion. Catalytic studies show that the Au@MIL-100(Fe) nanocatalyst exhibits much higher catalytic activity than the pure Au nanoparticles, suggesting that the MIL-100(Fe) shell enhances the catalytic activity via a synergistic effect.

Abstract:Controlling nanoparticle (NP) surface strain, i.e. compression (or stretch) of surface atoms, is an important approach to tune NP surface chemistry and to optimize NP catalysis for chemical reactions. Here we show that surface Pt strain in the core/shell FePt/Pt NPs with Pt in three atomic layers can be rationally tuned via core structural transition from cubic solid solution [denoted as face centered cubic (fcc)] structure to tetragonal intermetallic [denoted as face centered tetragonal (fct)] structure. The high activity observed from the fct-FePt/Pt NPs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is due to the release of the overcompressed Pt strain by the fct-FePt as suggested by quantum mechanics-molecular mechanics (QM-MM) simulations. The Pt strain effect on ORR can be further optimized when Fe in FePt is partially replaced by Cu. As a result, the fct-FeCuPt/Pt NPs become the most efficient catalyst for ORR and are nearly 10 times more active in specific activity than the commercial Pt catalyst. This structure-induced surface strain control opens up a new path to tune and optimize NP catalysis for ORR and many other chemical reactions.

Abstract:Engineering noble metal nanostructures at the atomic level can significantly optimize their electrocatalytic performance and remarkably reduce their usage. We report the synthesis of atomically dispersed Pt on screw-like Pd/Au nanowires by using ultrafine Pd nanowires as seeds. Au can selectively grow on the surface of Pd nanowires by an island growth pattern to fabricate surface defect sites to load atomically dispersed Pt, which can be confirmed by X-ray absorption fine structure measurements and aberration corrected HRTEM images. The nanowires with 2.74 at % Pt exhibit superior HER properties in acidic solution with an overpotential of 20.6 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and enhanced alkaline ORR performance with a mass activity over 15 times greater than the commercial platinum/carbon (Pt/C) catalysts.

Abstract:Combining the interests of core-shell and alloy structures, herein we report the versatile co-reduction synthesis of core-shell nanoparticles. The current strategy can effectively tune the component of shell, from isolated Pt to binary PtNi alloy, then ternary PtNi-M (M = Fe or Cu) alloy. Further, significant improvement of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is optimized by the change in shell component. Compared to /C, /C catalyst presents the ORR-helpful mass activity of 1.29 A mg-1Pt. By incorporating a third metal (M) into shell layer, the optimized mass activity of /C and /C catalysts is 1.1 times and 1.4 times higher than that of /C, respectively. Meanwhile, the lower activity decays of 11.0% for /C and 10.6% for /C are obtained compared with that of /C (12.4%) after 5,000 cycles, respectively.

Abstract:Platinum is a widely used precious metal in many catalytic nanostructures. Engineering the surface electronic structure of Pt-containing bi- or multimetallic nanostructure to enhance both the intrinsic activity and dispersion of Pt has remained a challenge. By constructing Pt-on-Au (Pt^Au) nanostructures using a series of monodisperse Au nanoparticles in the size range of 2-14 nm, we disclose herein a new approach to steadily change both properties of Pt in electrocatalysis with downsizing of the Au nanoparticles. A combined tuning of Pt dispersion and its surface electronic structure is shown as a consequence of the changes in the size and valence-band structure of Au, which leads to significantly enhanced Pt mass-activity on the small Au nanoparticles. Fully dispersed Pt entities on the smallest Au nanoparticles (2 nm) exhibit the highest mass-activity to date towards formic acid electrooxidation, being 2 orders of magnitude (75-300 folds) higher than conventional Pt/C catalyst. Fundamental relationships correlating the Pt intrinsic activity in Pt^Au nanostructures with the experimentally determined surface electronic structures (d-band center energies) of the Pt entities and their underlying Au nanoparticles are established.

Abstract:Depositing Pt atoms on nanoscale two-dimensional (2D) substrates resulting in the exposure of specific crystal facets is an effective strategy for reducing the Pt content without compromising the catalytic property. Herein, the Pd/PtCu core/shell nanoplates exhibit substantially improved ORR and MOR mass activities, 8.3 and 3.3 times higher than those of commercial Pt. The present work highlights the important role of designing a 2D core/shell nano-structure in enhancing fuel cell electrocatalysis.

Abstract:Alloyed nanoparticles with core-shell structures provide a favorable model to modulate interfacial interaction and surface structures at the atomic level, which is important for designing electrocatalysts with high activity and durability. Herein, core-shell structured Pd3M@Pt/C nanoparticles with binary PdM alloy cores (M = Fe, Ni, and Co) and a monolayer Pt shell were successfully synthesized with diverse interfaces. Among these, Pd3Fe@Pt/C exhibited the best oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance, roughly 5.4 times more than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst used as reference. The significantly enhanced activity is attributed to the combined effects of strain engineering, interfacial electron transfer, and improved Pt utilization. Density functional theory simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed that engineering the alloy core with moderate lattice mismatch and alloy composition (Pd3Fe) optimizes the surface oxygen adsorption energy, thereby rendering excellent electrocatalytic activity. Future researches may use this study as a guide on the construction of highly effective core-shell electrocatalysts for various energy conversions and other applications.

Abstract:Shape-controlled metal nanoparticles (NPs) interfacing Pt and nonprecious metals (M) are highly active energy conversion electrocatalysts; however, there are still few routes to shaped M-Pt core-shell NPs and fewer studies on the geometric effects of shape and strain on catalysis by such structures. Here, well-defined cubic multilayered Pd-Ni-Pt sandwich NPs are synthesized as a model platform to study the effects of the nonprecious metal below the shaped Pt surface. The combination of shaped Pd substrates and mild reduction conditions directs the Ni and Pt overgrowth in an oriented, layer-by-layer fashion. Exposing a majority of Pt(100) facets, the catalytic performance in formic acid and methanol electro-oxidations (FOR and MOR) is assessed for two different Ni layer thicknesses and two different particle sizes of the ternary sandwich NPs. The strain imparted to the Pt shell layer by the introduction of the Ni sandwich layer (Ni-Pt lattice mismatch of ∼11%) results in higher specific initial activities compared to core-shell Pd-Pt bimetallic NPs in alkaline MOR. The trends in activity are the same for FOR and MOR electrocatalysis in acidic electrolyte. However, restructuring in acidic conditions suggests a more complex catalytic behavior from changes in composition. Notably, we also show that cubic quaternary Au-Pd-Ni-Pt multishelled NPs, and Pd-Ni-Pt nanooctahedra can be generated by the method, the latter of which hold promise as potentially highly active oxygen reduction catalysts.

Abstract:Selective growth/etching of hybrid materials is very important for the rational synthesis of hierarchical structures and precise modulation of their physical properties. Here, the lateral etching of the core-shell Au@Ag nanorods is achieved by FeCl3 at room temperature, producing a number of dumbbell-like Ag-tipped Au nanorods. This selective etching at the side of the core-shell nanorods is attributed to the increased reactivity of the side facets, due to less surface passivation of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The similar synthetic strategy has also been demonstrated to be successful for the Pd-tipped Au nanorods that have not been reported before, indicating the great potential of this selective etching. The Ag-tipped Au nanorods are examined as a catalyst for the reduction of p-nitrophenol at room temperature. The Ag-tipped Au nanorods exhibit a higher catalytic activity than Au nanorods and core-shell Au@Ag nanorods, which could be attributed to the electronic effect and the unique structure in the Ag-tipped Au nanorods.
Atomic Level Tailoring of the Electrocatalytic Activity of Au-Pt Core-Shell Nanoparticles with Controllable Pt Layers Toward Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a critical step in water splitting and demands efficient and low-cost catalysts for real applications. Pt catalyzes HER efficiently, however, its scarcity and high cost inspire researchers to explore metallic catalysts with core-shell nanostructures. Precise tailoring of Pt catalysts at atomic monolayer level would shed insights on the relationship between electronic structure and electrocatalytic properties. Herein, we report the preparation of Au-Pt core-shell nanoparticles deposited on graphene sheets with tunable Pt monolayer coverage by controlling Cu underpotential deposition (UPD)-Galvanic replacement cycles. The electrochemical results suggest that Au-Pt with monolayer Pt shows superior electrocatalytic activity toward HER. Increasing the thickness of Pt shell results in the decrease of the electrocatalytic activity, which might be attributed to the decreased electronic interactions of Au core with outmost surface Pt atoms as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic characterization. The present research would offer a design criterion for metallic nanostructures in realizing catalysts with high performance.
