Abstract:We showed earlier that using Au nanoparticles of ca. 3.5 nm for the cores to construct core-shell Au@NimPt2 nanostructures can be promising for developing high performance Pt catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic electrolytes (L.-L. Shen, G.-R. Zhang, S. Miao, J. Liu and B.-Q. Xu, ACS Catal., 2016, 6, 1680-1690). By varying the nanosize of Au cores (d = 2.2-10.3 nm) and the atomic Pt/Au (or Ni/Au) ratio (m = 0.5-6), serial Au-d@NimPtm nanostructures are herein constructed and characterized comprehensively to investigate effects of the Au-core size and NiPt-shell thickness on the Pt activity for the ORR. Maximization of the Pt intrinsic activity (IA(Pt)) to as high as ca. 1.06 mA cm(Pt)(-2) at 0.9 V (vs. RHE) is observed on Au-d@Ni2Pt2 of d = 7.7 and 10.3 nm, 4-fold higher than that of conventional Pt/C (E-TEK). Construction of Au-2.2@NimPtm samples by variation of m demonstrates that the formation of an integrated NiPt-shell of suitable thickness is essential for improving IA(Pt), whose number appears to correlate with the reduction potential of oxidized surface Pt (or surface Pt-O). The integrated NiPt-shell is also shown to be crucial to the catalytic durability of Pt during the ORR. These observations are discussed in terms of surface faceting, strain and electronic effects in association with the Au cores.
Local Coordination and Ordering Engineering to Design Efficient Core-Shell Oxygen Reduction Catalysts

Abstract:For most core-shell nanostructured Pt-based alloy electrocatalysts, the local environment and configuration of surface Pt layers are randomly generated, which would hinder the further improvement of the utilization, activity and stability of Pt atoms. Herein, we have selected AuCu alloys with different structural ordering as substrates and deposited a Pt shell on their surface via the precise control of replacing Cu with Pt atoms. Various physical and electrochemical characterizations indicate that the structural ordering of an AuCu core could influence the distribution of surface Pt atoms due to the rearrangement of surface atoms. After optimization, the obtained catalysts displayed a high mass activity (0.75 Amg(Pt)(-1)) and specific activity (0.491 mAcm(Pt)(-2)) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which were nearly 7.5 times and 3.6 times those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. In addition, the catalysts could also exhibit a high stability with a negligible activity decay after 10,000 cycles of accelerated durability tests (ADTs). The density functional theory (DFT) calculation reveals that the precisely controlled Pt local environment could lower the Gibbs free energy barrier for the rate-determining step of ORR more than a random distribution could, thus enhancing the catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts.
Shaped Pt-Ni Nanocrystals with an Ultrathin Pt-enriched Shell Derived from One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis As Active Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction

Abstract:Alloy nanocrystals (NCs) of Pt with 3d transition metals, especially Ni, are excellent catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, we, for the first time, demonstrated the water phase colloidal synthesis of Pt- M ( M = Ni, Co and Fe) alloy NCs with tunable composition and morphology through a facile hydrothermal method. Pt-Ni alloy NCs synthesized with this method presented better ORR activity than commercial Pt/C catalysts. The X-ray energy dispersive spectra (EDS) mapping technique revealed that Pt-enriched shells existed on the as-synthesized Pt-Ni alloy NCs. About two atom thick layered Pt-enriched shells formed on Pt 50 Ni 50 NCs and the thickness of the Pt-enriched shells increased as the Ni content increased. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that the oxidation level of the surface Pt atoms on the Pt-Ni alloy NCs decreased compared with monometallic Pt NCs, implying a decrease in the oxophilicity of the surface Pt atoms. Pt-Ni alloy NCs with lower oxophilicity of the surface Pt atoms give higher ORR activity. The most active alloy sample showed 13 times higher specific activity and six times higher mass activity at 0.9 V vs. a reversible hydrogen electrode when compared with commercial Pt/C. Pt-Ni alloy NCs also showed better durability than commercial Pt/C in long term ORR tests.
Multimetallic AuPd@Pd@Pt Core-Interlayer-shell Icosahedral Electrocatalysts for Highly Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Incorporating Pt with core metals into Pt-based core-shell catalysts is regarded as a promising strategy to substantially enhance the catalytic properties towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells due to the synergetic effect between distinct metals. In this wok, ultrathin Pt skins with two atomic layers were epitaxially coated on as-prepared icosahedral Au50Pd50, Au60Pd40 and Au-66 Pd-34 nanocrystal seeds, which are constructed with alloyed cores and Pd shells with different thickness. Through electron microscopic characterizations, Pd interlayers with tunable thickness of 3, 6, and 12 atomic layers can be found in the Au66Pd34@Pt, Au60Pd40@Pt and Au50Pd50@Pt icosahedra, respectively. These icosahedral AuPd@Pd@Pt nanocrystals show substantially enhanced activities and durabilities in electrocatalytic measurements towards ORR compared to Au75Pd25@Pt icosahedra without Pd interlayer and commercial Pt/C catalysts. Specifically, Au-60 Pd-40@Pt icosahedra with 6 atomically thick Pd interlayer display the best electrocatalytic performances, whose mass activities before and after durability tests of 50,000 cycles are 11.6 and 30.2 times, respectively, as high as that of the commercial Pt/C. Core–Shell Nanostructured Au@NimPt2 Electrocatalysts with Enhanced Activity and Durability for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Fabricating Pt-alloy and core-shell nanostructures with Au NPs in the cores are considered as two general approaches to improving the performance of Pt-based catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic electrolyte. These two approaches are combined herein to develop a heteroseed-mediated solvothermal method for synthesizing nearly monodisperse core-shell structured Au@NimPt2 nanoparticles (NPs) of 5.0-6.5 nm (with the atomic ratio of Ni/Pt/Au = m/2/1) as ORR catalysts. With respect to controlling the amount and relative concentrations of the metal precursors in the starting solution, this method enables not only facile manipulation of the shell composition and thickness but also fine-tuning of the core-shell interaction and surface electronic structures of the resultant Au@NimPt2 NPs, endowing the Au@NimPt2 NPs with improved Pt activity and durability for ORR. Subjecting the Au@NimPt2 NPs to an ex situ pretreatment in flowing 2%CO/Ar at 300 degrees C is shown to result in further improved Pt activity. Data are also presented to correlate the intrinsic Pt activity with experimentally determined CO adsorption property (CO-stripping peak potential) of Pt for the Au@Ni(m)Pt2 samples, and to show the excellent electrochemical durability of the Au@NimPt2 NPs during 20 000 potential cycles between 0.6 and 1.1 V (vs RI-IE) in O-2-saturated 0.1 M HClO4. Compared with the commercial E-TEK Pt/C catalyst, the most-active Au@Ni2Pt2 NPs exhibit 3-4- and 4-6-fold higher Pt activity at 0.9 V before and after the 20 000 potential cycles, respectively. Factors relevant to the activity and durability control of the Au@NimPt2 catalysts for ORR are discussed.

Abstract:The sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode largely hinders the practical application of the proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Pt-based nanocrystals are the most effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction, however, suffer high cost, scarcity and unsatisfied durability. Herein, we report a new category of annealed multimetallic core-shell catalyst of gold core doped with titanium and platinum-nickel (PtNi) shell with Pt-rich surface as a highly active and robust electrocatalyst for ORR. The introduction of titanium can effectively stabilize the gold core, avoiding the outward migration of Au atoms and ensuring the exposure of Pt-Ni active sites. The experimental findings revealed that the annealed Ti-Au@PtNi NPs catalyst provides 19.26 and 9.84 times higher mass and specific activities than commercial Pt/C catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction. Moreover, durability tests of annealed Ti-Au@PtNi NPs show no noticeable activity loss even after 20000 potential cycles between 0.6 and 1.0 V vs . RHE, demonstrating a promising catalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction. Abstract:Porous Pt-based nanostructures are highly promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells, because of their high catalytic surface area and sufficient catalytically active sites. Herein, we adopt a facile method in aqueous solution to synthesize the Au@PtPd mesoporous nanorod (Au@PtPd MNR) in which a Au nanorod (NR) serves as core, and mesoporous PtPd acts as shell. Because of the mesoporous core–shell structure and composition effect, Au@PtPd MNR exhibits superior catalytic activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), as compared with PtPd mesoporous sphere (MS), Au@Pt MNR, and commercial Pt/C catalyst. This synthetic strategy is appropriate for preparation of other mesoporous core–shell structures for various promising applications.

Abstract:Alloyed nanoparticles with core-shell structures provide a favorable model to modulate interfacial interaction and surface structures at the atomic level, which is important for designing electrocatalysts with high activity and durability. Herein, core-shell structured Pd3M@Pt/C nanoparticles with binary PdM alloy cores (M = Fe, Ni, and Co) and a monolayer Pt shell were successfully synthesized with diverse interfaces. Among these, Pd3Fe@Pt/C exhibited the best oxygen reduction reaction catalytic performance, roughly 5.4 times more than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst used as reference. The significantly enhanced activity is attributed to the combined effects of strain engineering, interfacial electron transfer, and improved Pt utilization. Density functional theory simulations and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analysis revealed that engineering the alloy core with moderate lattice mismatch and alloy composition (Pd3Fe) optimizes the surface oxygen adsorption energy, thereby rendering excellent electrocatalytic activity. Future researches may use this study as a guide on the construction of highly effective core-shell electrocatalysts for various energy conversions and other applications.

Abstract:Fabrication of non-Pt high-performance oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is essential for the application of fuel cells. In this work, monodisperse bimetallic Ni-Pd core-shell nanoparticles (NPs) with tunable shell compositions and contents were synthesized by using a modified one-pot colloidal approach and characterized. Also, the core shell structure dependence of their ORR performance without the interruption of an intermetallic phase was explored. The core-shell structured catalysts (Ni@Pd3/C NPs) exhibited a robust ORR activity and stability with a high onset potential of 0.99 V, a half-wave potential of 0.87 V and an average electron transfer number of 3.91 in 0.1 M HClO4. Furthermore, a high onset potential of 0.98 V, a half-wave potential of 0.86 V and an average electron transfer number of 3.98 were achieved in 0.1 M KOH. These results are comparable to those of the commercially available Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, the catalysts also maintained a good long-term cycling stability in both acidic and alkaline electrolytes. Thus, this work demonstrates that the ORR performance of the Ni-Pd alloy could be boosted through constructing the core-shell structure with a Pd-enriched surface and the Ni-Pd model alloy could be further applied to assess the role of the Pd-based core-shell structure in other electrochemical catalytic reactions.
Octahedral Pd@Pt1.8Ni Core-Shell Nanocrystals with Ultrathin PtNi Alloy Shells As Active Catalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Abstract:Forming core-shell and alloy structures offers generally two ways to design efficient Pt-based catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Here, we combined these two strategies and invented a versatile aqueous route to synthesize octahedral Pd@Pt1.8Ni core-shell nanocrystals. The Pt/Ni atomic ratios in the resultant shells can be varied from 0.6 to 1.8, simply by changing the amounts of Pt and Ni precursors, with the other conditions unchanged. Experimental studies showed that the mass activities of as-prepared catalysts were 5 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C. We believe that the ultrathin PtNi shells enclosed by {111} facets made it possible to reduce the Pt content while retaining the catalytic activity toward ORR. This strategy may be extended to the preparation of other multimetallic nanocrystals with shaped and ultrathin alloy shells, which is conducive to design highly active catalysts.

Abstract:We review our recent progress in the development of Pt–Ni bimetallic electrocatalysts with both high sustained activity and sustained stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This was achieved by an atomic understanding and rational control of the core–shell compositional patterns and size-related nanoporosity within the bimetallic nanoparticles formed during chemical and electrochemical pretreatment and electrocatalysis. In particular, we reveal how the size of the nanoparticle directly influences the nanoporosity formation and thereby the near surface composition, catalytic activity and stability. Our atomic insights provide a clearer picture on how bimetallic nanoparticles should be tailored for optimal ORR performance.
In Situ Atomic-Scale Observation of Oxygen-Driven Core-Shell Formation in Pt 3 Co Nanoparticles

Abstract:The catalytic performance of core-shell platinum alloy nanoparticles is typically superior to that of pure platinum nanoparticles for the oxygen reduction reaction in fuel cell cathodes. Thorough understanding of core-shell formation is critical for atomic-scale design and control of the platinum shell, which is known to be the structural feature responsible for the enhancement. Here we reveal details of a counter-intuitive core-shell formation process in platinum-cobalt nanoparticles at elevated temperature under oxygen at atmospheric pressure, by using advanced in situ electron microscopy. Initial segregation of a thin platinum, rather than cobalt oxide, surface layer occurs concurrently with ordering of the intermetallic core, followed by the layer-by-layer growth of a platinum shell via Ostwald ripening during the oxygen annealing treatment. Calculations based on density functional theory demonstrate that this process follows an energetically favourable path. These findings are expected to be useful for the future design of structured platinum alloy nanocatalysts.Core-shell platinum alloy nanoparticles are promising catalysts for oxygen reduction, however a deeper understanding of core-shell formation is still required. Here the authors report oxygen-driven formation of core-shell Pt3Co nanoparticles, seen at the atomic scale with in situ electron microscopy at ambient pressure.
Atomic PdAu Interlayer Sandwiched into Pd/Pt Core/Shell Nanowires Achieves Superstable Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

Abstract:Rationally designing the core/shell architecture of Pt-based electrocatalysts has been demonstrated as an effective way to induce a surface strain effect for promoting the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of fuel cells. However, unstable core dissolution and structural collapse usually occur in Pt-based core/shell catalysts during the long-term cycling operation, greatly impacting actual fuel cell applications. Impeding the dissolution of cores beneath the Pt shells is the key to enhancing the catalytic stability of materials. Herein, a method for sandwiching atomic PdAu interlayers into one-dimensional (1D) Pd/Pt core/shell nanowires (NWs) is developed to greatly boost the catalytic stability of subnanometer Pt shells for ORR. The Pd/PdAu/Pt core/shell/shell NWs display only 7.80% degradation of ORR mass activity over 80 000 potential cycles with no dissolution of Pd cores and good preservation of the holistic sandwich core/shell nanostructures. This is a significant improvement of electrocatalytic stability compared with the Pd/Pt core/shell NWs, which deformed and inactivated over 80 000 potential cycles. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations further demonstrate that the electron-transfer bridge Pd and electron reservoir Au, serving in the PdAu atomic interlayer, both guarantee the preservation of the high electroactivity of surface Pt sites during the long-term ORR stability test. In addition, the Pd/PdAu/Pt NWs show a 1.7-fold higher mass activity (MA) for ORR than the conventional Pd/Pt NWs. High Stability and Reactivity of Pt-Based Core–Shell Nanoparticles for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Structural stability and catalytic reactivity of M@Pt12 core–shell nanoclusters with different core atom (M) are systematically investigated using ab initio density functional theory calculations with the generalized gradient approximation. We found that the pure D5h-Pt13 cluster is venerable to reactants and may loss its activity in reaction conditions. The insertion of Fe, Co, Tc, Ru, Rh, Re, Os, or Ir into its core, forming D5h M@Pt12 core–shell nanoclusters, may significantly enhance the structural stability and may also further improve its catalytic activity. Our findings provide useful insights for the design of robust bimetallic nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Combining the interests of core-shell and alloy structures, herein we report the versatile co-reduction synthesis of core-shell nanoparticles. The current strategy can effectively tune the component of shell, from isolated Pt to binary PtNi alloy, then ternary PtNi-M (M = Fe or Cu) alloy. Further, significant improvement of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity is optimized by the change in shell component. Compared to /C, /C catalyst presents the ORR-helpful mass activity of 1.29 A mg-1Pt. By incorporating a third metal (M) into shell layer, the optimized mass activity of /C and /C catalysts is 1.1 times and 1.4 times higher than that of /C, respectively. Meanwhile, the lower activity decays of 11.0% for /C and 10.6% for /C are obtained compared with that of /C (12.4%) after 5,000 cycles, respectively.

Abstract:Fuel cells, as the alternative to fossil energy, have engaged widespread attention by reason of the high conversion efficiency from the chemical energy to the electric energy combined with low pollution emissions. The cathodic ORR catalysts with excellent performance and cost-effectiveness are the dominant point towards the massive development of fuel cells. Here, our group select the Pd NWs as the template and construct the Pd@PtRuNi core–shell bilayer nanostructure to expand platinum atom utilization. Pd@PtRuNi bilayer core–shell NWs unfold elevated mass activity of 1.62 A mg metal − 1 at 0.9 V versus RHE in alkaline media, 2.03- and 6.23-fold of pristine Pd NWs and benchmark commercial Pt/C, respectively. Meanwhile, the cyclic stability tests reveal the excellent durability of Pd@PtRuNi NWs, whose mass activity is only 13.58% degradation after accelerated durability tests. The catalytic activity and durability towards ORR are better than the U.S. 2025 DOE target ( 0.44 A mg pt − 1 and less than 40% activity attenuation at 0.9 V after 30 000 potential cycles). The elevated catalytic properties can be traceable to the synergism between the ligand effect of Ni and Ru and one-dimensional structure superiority, which optimizes the electronic structure of active sites, promotes the charge transfer and restrains the agglomeration and detachment.

Abstract:We report a new seed-mediated growth of FePt over 2.5 nm wide FePtM (M = Pd, Au) nanowires (NWs) into core/shell FePtM/FePt NWs with controlled FePt shell thickness from 0.3 to 1.3 nm. These FePtM/FePt NWs show shell thickness and core composition-dependent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in 0.1 M HClO4. These core/shell FePtM/FePt NWs are generally more active and durable than the corresponding alloy NWs. Among FePtM/FePt NWs, FePt NWs, FePtPd NWs, and commercial Pt studied, the FePtPd/FePt NWs (0.8 nm shell) show the specific activity of 3.47 mA·cm(-2) and the mass activity of 1.68 A/mg Pt at 0.5 V (vs. Ag/AgCl), superior to all other NWs (less than 1.59 mA/cm(2) and 0.82 A/mg Pt for FePtAu/FePt and FePt) as well as the commercial Pt (0.24 mA/cm(2) and 0.141 A/mg Pt). The FePtM/FePt (0.8 nm shell) NWs are also stable in the ORR condition and show no activity decrease after 5000 potential sweeps between 0.4 and 0.8 V (vs Ag/AgCl). They are the most efficient nanocatalyst ever reported for ORR.
Tuning the catalytic activity of Ru@Pt core-shell nanoparticles for the oxygen reduction reaction by varying the shell thickness

Abstract:The kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) was investigated in acid solutions on Pt monolayers that were deposited on carbon-supported Ru nanoparticles using the rotating disk electrode technique. The Pt mass and specific ORR activities greatly depend on the number of Pt monolayers, and the optimum activity occurs with two Pt monolayers. Density functional theory calculations showed that Pt overlayers destabilize O* and OH* with respect to pure Pt, leading to more favorable hydrogenation kinetics. However, with only a single Pt overlayer, the destabilization is too much, and O-O bond breaking becomes rate limiting. Two to three Pt monolayers supported on the Ru core of our nanoparticles lead to increased activity. This work demonstrates that one can modulate the ORR activity of Pt monolayers supported on other metals by eliminating a part of the ligand effect by increasing the thickness of the Pt shell on top of the supporting metal surface.

Abstract:Core/shell nanocatalysts have been regarded as potential catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurring at the cathode of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Notably, core/shell segregated nanocatalysts exhibit improved activity and stability compared with alloyed nanocatalysts because of the high noble metal utilization and electronic modification effect. Herein, we report that the ORR activity and stability of PtAuSn core/shell ternary nanorod catalysts are fine-structure-dependent in which AuSnOx-decorated Pt catalysts can reach a high ORR mass activity of 1069 mA/mgPt at 0.85 V (IR-free). Moreover, the x-decorated Pt catalysts with a surface SnOx protective layer show high ORR stability after an accelerated durability test of 10,000 cycles, which yet maintain a high mass activity (251 mA/mgPt).
