Abstract:The infinite availability of solar energy grants the potential of fulfilling the energy demands and environmental sustainability requirements with more feasible and reliant renewable energy forms through photocatalysis. In the past decade, the intensive plasmonic effect, suitable work function, superior electrical conductivity and physiochemical properties have made Ag-based photocatalysts attractive components for emerging applications. The local surface plasmon resonance effect (LSPR) provides extra hot-carriers to participate in the photocatalytic process, and Schottky/Ohmic contacts would facilitate charge transfer. Here, recent studies focused on Ag-based photocatalysts for emerging applications are reviewed. Notably, the mechanisms of LSPR, the Schottky barrier and ohmic contacts are introduced together with urgent issues in CO 2 reduction, antibacterial application, H 2 generation, and environmental hazard removal. Additionally, some perspectives and directions on more comprehensive designs on material system, band alignment and functionalization are given to further the exploration in this research area.

Abstract:Constructing suitable type II heterostructures is a reliable solution for high-efficient photovoltaic and photocatalytic materials. Arsenene, as a rising member of monoelemental two-dimensional materials, shows great potential as a building block of heterostructures because of its suitable band gap, high carrier mobility, and good optical properties. On the basis of accurate band structure calculations by combining the many-body perturbation GW method with an extrapolation technique, we demonstrate that arsenene-based heterostructures paired with molybdenum disulfide, tetracyano-quinodimethane, or tetracyanonaphtho-quinodimethane can form type II band alignments. These arsenene-based heterostructures cannot only satisfy all the requirements as photocatalysts for photocatalytic water splitting but can also show an excellent power conversion efficiency of ∼20% as potential photovoltaics.

Abstract:Global environment pollution and energy exhaustion are two main problems that threaten the existence of mankind. Construction of Ag-based heterostructures in photocatalytic application is one of the best promising means for resolving these environmental and energy issues. Ag materials possess with benign visible light absorption, great quantum efficiency, excellent electrical conductivity and photoelectrochemical activity. This critical review summarizes the construction and photocatalytic performance of Ag-based heterostructures (including semiconductor heterojunctions, Schottky junction and Z-scheme heterojunctions). The basic classification of photocatalyst and photocatalytic theory are briefly discussed for better understanding the construction principle of heterostructures. The foundational principles and recent progresses of these three kinds of heterojunction are also demonstrated subsequently. The roles of Ag-based semiconductors and metallic Ag in these heterostructures is an important parameter in design of these heterostructures. Among these heterostructures, Ag-based Z-scheme heterostructures presented with fast charge separation routes and more photostability in practical application have attracted interests in environment remedy and energy store. Therefore, the environmental and energy application, including environmental decontamination, photoelectrochemical water splitting, CO2 conversion and N2 fixation, are elaborated in detail. Eventually, the challenges and perspectives of these Ag-based heterostructures, even for Ag-based Z-scheme heterostructures, are proposed.

Abstract:Developing efficient and affordable catalysts is of great significance for energy and environmental sustainability. Heterostructure photocatalysts exhibit a better performance than either of the parent phases as it changes the band bending at the interfaces and provides a driving force for carrier separation, thus mitigating the effects of carrier recombination and back-reaction. Herein, the photo/electrochemical applications of a variety of metal sulfides (MSx) (MoS2, CdS, CuS, PbS, SnS2, ZnS, Ag2S, Bi2S3, and In2S3)/TiO2 heterojunctions are summarized, including organic degradation, water splitting, and CO2 reduction conversion. First, a general introduction on each MSx material (especially bandgap structures) will be given. Then the photo/electrochemical applications based on MSx/TiO2 heterostructures are reviewed from the perspective of light harvesting ability, charge carrier separation and transportation, and surface chemical reactions. Special focus is given to CdS/TiO2 and PbS/TiO2-based quantum dot sensitized solar cells. Ternary composites by taking advantages of positive synergetic effects are also well summarized. Finally, conclusions are made regarding approaches for structure design, and the authors' perspective on future architectural design and electrode construction is given. This work will make up the gap for TiO2 nanocomposites and shed light on the fabrication of more efficient MSx-metal oxide junctions in photo/electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Efficient solar‐to‐hydrogen (STH) conversion through water splitting relies on the development of low‐cost photocatalysts with high photoactivity and stability. ZnxCd1−xS, an emerging metal sulfide (MS) solid solution for STH, possesses several unique advantages, such as a tunable bandgap, abundant elemental constituents, and high stability. Although ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are investigated for hydrogen evolution, their photoactivity still has to be enhanced for commercial applications. Herein, the design concept, crystal and band structure properties, and original photoactivity of ZnxCd1−xS are briefly introduced, and ZnxCd1−xS solutions with different morphologies and structures, modifications, synthesis methods, and vacancy engineering are then discussed. Subsequently, the combination of ZnxCd1−xS and cocatalysts and several representative ZnxCd1−xS‐based heterojunction photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution are reviewed and discussed in detail. Finally, the unsolved issues in the application of ZnxCd1−xS photocatalysts and their potential solutions for developing advanced ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are discussed. ZnxCd1−xS‐based photocatalysts are reviewed based on the engineering of crystal and band structure, morphology and structure, vacancy, cocatalyst, and heterojunction; recent research progress and the unsolved issues have to be further studied in future research.

Abstract:Semiconductor photocatalysis is a new sustainable development technology that has demonstrated remarkable potential in the fields of energy-production and environmental-protection. However, a single photocatalyst usually does not possess both strong redox and fast charge-separation properties, greatly limiting photocatalysis efficiency. Heterojunction photocatalysts can perfectly solve this problem by providing multiple reactive sites and fast charge separation and migration, elevating photocatalytic efficiency to a new higher level. Metal sulfides are a family of compounds composed of metals and sulfur (e.g., CdS, CuS, MoS 2 , In 2 S 3 , ZnIn 2 S 4 , and Zn x Cd 1– x S) that are preferred choices for heterojunction photocatalysts due to their narrow bandgaps, broad visible-light absorption ranges, and convenient preparation methods. This review article introduces the characteristics of metal sulfides, summarizes methods for their synthesis, and discusses various types of metal-sulfide-based heterojunctions. The use of such photocatalysts in energy and environmental-remediation applications is subsequently discussed. In addition, the roles of charge separation and transfer in heterojunction photocatalysts are demonstrated using in-situ characterization techniques. Finally, we discuss some application prospects and challenges concerning metal-sulfide-based heterojunction photocatalysts. Abstract:Quaternary copper-based sulfides (QCSs) exhibit significant potential for solar hydrogen evolution due to their diverse compositions and structures, suitable band structure, controllable synthesis, and non-toxic nature. Strengthening cognition for nanostructures enables the fabrication of high-efficiency photocatalysts. Although a comprehensive understanding of photocatalytic processes of QCSs-based photocatalysts has been recently accumulated, the correlation between structure and function remains incompletely elucidated. This overview begins with an introduction to the fundamental principles of solar hydrogen evolution. Subsequently, we provide a succinct description of the controllable synthesis of QCSs-based photocatalysts. The structure-function correlation of single QCSs is systematically discussed by exploring how structure-related properties influence photocatalytic processes. Recent advancements based on the single QCSs are summarized in detail. As the guide, we further discussed the structure-function correlation of QCS-based derivatives including semiconductor heterojunctions, cocatalyst loading, heteroatomic doping, and polytypic homojunctions. Different mechanisms of activity enhancement are provided along with a summary of their research progress in solar hydrogen evolution. In conclusion, challenges and perspectives for material synthesis and energy conversion are proposed. We anticipate that this overview will offer valuable insights for future exploration of QCS-based photocatalysts, greatly advancing the progress in this emerging research field.

Abstract:Photocatalysis has received significant attention as a technology that can solve global energy and environmental issues that are essential for the sustainable development of society. The use of solar light and separated photo-generated charges plays an important role in enhancing photocatalytic efficiency. Constructing heterostructure-based full-solar-light-driven photocatalysts is a sensible method for widening the solar light response and accelerating charge migration. This review comprehensively summarizes progress in heterostructure development for use in full-solar-light-driven photocatalytic systems, including basic photo-response theory, photocatalytic mechanisms, and applications including environmental decontamination, water-splitting, CO2 conversion, and photocatalytic oxidation reactions. This review provides an in-depth discussion regarding the fundamental principles associated with solar-light harvesting and efficient charge migration that are crucial for heterostructure design. Therefore, this review provides inspiration for the development of further innovations in the full-solar-light-driven photocatalysis field.

Abstract:Porous photocatalysts are promising materials capable of simultaneously adsorbing and oxidizing/reducing target species, showing great potentials in environmental remediation and energy generation. This review offered a comprehensive overview of the recent progress in design, fabrication, and applications of porous photocatalysts, including carbon-based semiconductors, metal oxides/sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, and adsorbent-photocatalyst hybrids. The fundamental understanding of the structure-performance relationships of porous materials together with the in-depth insights into the synergetic effects between adsorption and photocatalysis were presented. The strategies to further improve the photocatalytic activity of porous photocatalysts were proposed. This review would provide references and outlooks of constructing efficient porous materials for adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of pollutants and energy production.

Abstract:Direct conversion of solar energy into chemical energy in a sustainable manner is one of the most promising solutions to the energy crisis and environmental issues. Fabrication of highly active photocatalysts is of great significance for the practical applications of efficient solar‐to‐chemical energy conversion systems. Among various photocatalytic materials, semiconductor‐based heterostructured photocatalysts with hollow features show distinct advantages. Recent research efforts on rational design of heterostructured hollow photocatalysts toward photocatalytic water splitting and CO2 reduction are presented. First, both single‐shelled and multishelled heterostructured photocatalysts are surveyed. Then, heterostructured hollow photocatalysts with tube‐like and frame‐like morphologies are discussed. It is intended that further innovative works on the material design of high‐performance photocatalysts for solar energy utilization can be inspired.

Abstract:Introduction of Two-Dimensional (2D) photocatalysts for solar water splitting has attracted significant attention in recent years, due to their considerably large surface areas and short pathways of charge carrier migration compared to their bulk counterparts. Herein, monolayers of Ag2S, Ag2Se, SAg4Se, SAg4Te, SeAg4Te and their heterostructures are predicted as promising overall-water-splitting photocatalysts according to first-principles calculations. Compared with Ag2S and Ag2Se monolayers, the Janus ones not only possess direct band gaps and moderate band edges for overall water splitting but also achieve the Janus-induced built-in electric fields of 0.14, 0.34 and 0.21 eV respectively, which could improve the photocatalytic efficiency via restraining the electron-hole recombination. Further investigations on their heterostructures show that they are also suitable for overall water splitting with enhanced optical absorbances and larger built-in electric fields. Our findings extend the scope of overall-water-splitting photocatalysts to monolayers of Ag2S, Ag2Se, SAg4Se, SAg4Te, SeAg4Te and their heterostructures, which is expected to inspire the experimental fabrications and relative investigations.

Abstract:Over the past years, photocatalytic technology has exhibited a great potential in treating wastewater, splitting water to hydrogen and reducing CO2 to fuel. Among, more and more researchers attempt to design AgI based heterojunction photocatalytic systems for developing novel photocatalysts with excellent performance. However, a review about AgI based photocatalytic systems is still absent. Herein, two the charge carrier transfer processes in Type II and Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalytic system were firstly presented systemically. Then the recent developments of AgI based different heterojunction photocatalytic systems were summarized. The photocatalysts commonly modified by AgI are classified, and the role of AgI in different heterojunction photocatalytic systems is analyzed in detail. Additionally, the application of AgI based composites in environmental restoration and energy conversion field are presented including degradation of pollutants, photocatalytic hydrogen generation, carbon dioxide reduction and disinfection. Meanwhile, the typical mechanism of these photocatalytic reactions based on AgI composites is also described in detail. Finally, unresolved challenges and potential applications of AgI based composites are presented for guiding the direction for future development.
Construction of Ag/Ag2S/CdS Heterostructures through a Facile Two-Step Wet Chemical Process for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Abstract:We have demonstrated a two-step wet chemical approach for synthesizing ternary Ag/Ag2S/CdS heterostructures for efficient photocatalytic hydrogen evolution. The CdS precursor concentrations and reaction temperatures are crucial in determining the efficiency of photocatalytic water splitting under visible light excitation. In addition, the effect of operational parameters (such as the pH value, sacrificial reagents, reusability, water bases, and light sources) on the photocatalytic hydrogen production of Ag/Ag2S/CdS heterostructures was investigated. As a result, Ag/Ag2S/CdS heterostructures exhibited a 3.1-fold enhancement in photocatalytic activities compared to bare CdS nanoparticles. Furthermore, the combination of Ag, Ag2S, and CdS can significantly enhance light absorption and facilitate the separation and transport of photogenerated carriers through the surface plasma resonance (SPR) effect. Furthermore, the Ag/Ag2S/CdS heterostructures in seawater exhibited a pH value approximately 2.09 times higher than in de-ionized water without an adjusted pH value under visible light excitation. The ternary Ag/Ag2S/CdS heterostructures provide new potential for designing efficient and stable photocatalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a green technology to use ubiquitous and intermittent sunlight. The emerging S-scheme heterojunction has demonstrated its superiority in photocatalysis. This article covers the state-of-the-art progress and provides new insights into its general designing criteria. It starts with the challenges confronted by single photocatalyst from the perspective of energy dissipation by borrowing the common behaviors in the dye molecule. Subsequently, other problems faced by single photocatalyst are summarized. Then a viable solution for these problems is the construction of heterojunctions. To overcome the problems and mistakes of type-II and Z-scheme heterojunctions, S-scheme heterojunction is proposed and the underlying reaction mechanism is summarized. Afterward, the design principles for S-scheme heterojunction are proposed and four types of S-scheme heterojunctions are suggested. Following this, direct characterization techniques for testifying the charge transfer in S-scheme heterojunction are presented. Finally, different photocatalytic applications of S-scheme heterojunctions are summarized. Specifically, this work endeavors to clarify the critical understanding on curved Fermi level in S-scheme heterojunction interface, which can help strengthen and advance the fundamental theories of photocatalysis. Moreover, the current challenges and prospects of the S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst are critically discussed.

Abstract:Artificial photocatalysis represents a hopeful avenue for tackling the global crisis of environmental and energy sustainability. The crux of industrial application in photocatalysis lies in efficient photocatalysts that can inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, thereby boost the efficiency of chemical reactions. In the past decade, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been growing extremely rapidly and have become the forefront of photocatalysis owing to their superior utilization of metal atoms and outstanding catalytic activity. In this work, we provide an overview of the latest advancements and challenges in SACs for photocatalysis, focusing on the photocatalytic mechanisms, encompassing the generation, separation, migration, and surface extraction of photogenerated carriers. We also explore the design, synthesis, and characterization of SACs and introduce the progress of SACs for photocatalytic applications, such as water splitting and CO2 reduction. Lastly, we offer our personal perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of SACs in photocatalysis, aiming to provide insights into the future studies of SACs for photocatalytic applications.

Abstract:The photo-conversion efficiency is a key issue in the development of new photocatalysts for solar light driven water splitting applications. In recent years, different engineering strategies have been proposed to improve the photogeneration and the lifetime of charge carriers in nanostructured photocatalysts. In particular, the rational design of heterojunctions composites to obtain peculiar physico-chemical properties has achieved more efficient charge carriers formation and separation in comparison to their individual component materials. In this review, the recent progress of sulfide-based heterojunctions and novel nanostructures such as core-shell structure, periodical structure, and hollow cylinders is summarized. Some new perspectives of opportunities and challenges in fabricating high-performance photocatalysts are also discussed.

Abstract:Metal sulfides (MSs) have been explored extensively as promising semiconductors for photocatalytic applications in pollutant degradation, CO 2 reduction, and H 2 production. However, pure MSs suffer from several drawbacks, especially rapid electron–hole recombination. The construction of S-scheme heterojunctions has been recommended as one of effective strategies to improve charge separation and transfer, as well as to retain high redox potential electrons and holes to participate in reaction. This paper reviewed recent advances on the construction of MS-based S-scheme heterojunctions with high photocatalytic performances. In particular, various design and construction approaches, including integration with other semiconductors, microstructure control, and interface modulation, were covered along with mechanisms governing the boosted photocatalytic performances. The challenges and prospects in the research about MS-based S-scheme heterojunctions were discussed finally, providing our insight on future research.

Abstract:Benefiting from the unique electronic structures and high specific surface areas, two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors present significant advantages in photocatalytic researches for realizing efficient solar energy utilization. As compared with the bulk counterparts, 2D semiconductors tend to possess distinct photoexcitation processes and thus diverse photocatalytic behaviors, owing to the abundant surface structural factors and strong quantum confinement effects. Accordingly, enormous efforts have been devoted to exploring the relationship between the structure and photoexcitation processes in 2D semiconductors, for the sake of the optimization of photocatalytic performance. The attempts not only establish various new 2D semiconductor-based photo catalysts, but also provide in-depth understanding on the involved relevant mechanisms. Herein, an overview of recent advances in the exploitation of 2D semiconductors in photocatalytic applications is presented. By summarizing the investigations on structural characterization and photoexcitation processes, we highlight the relationship between structural factors and photocatalytic performance; in particular, the impacts of excitonic effects mediated by Coulomb interactions on photocatalytic behaviors are discussed. We conclude the review by exploring the future challenges and opportunities for the developments of 2D materials on photocatalytic areas.

Abstract:Over the past decades, designing efficient photocatalysts represents a remarkable route to deal with energy crisis, environmental pollution issues and global warming problems. Zinc cadmium sulfide (ZnxCd1-xS) based photocatalysts have been explored extensively due to their continuously tunable band gap structure and outstanding absorption ability for visible light, and substantial satisfying contributions have been made. This work first summarizes recent progress on the synthesis of ZnxCd1-xS based materials. They also have various applications in photocatalytic area, including photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, pollutants degradation and carbon dioxide reduction. Especially, the mechanism of different pathways to improve the photocatalytic performance of ZnxCd1-xS based photocatalysts is discussed in detail, which has never been reported in any previous reviews up to now. Moreover, the current challenges and development ideas of ZnxCd1-xS based materials are proposed. It is expected that our review would be helpful for the application of ZnxCd1-xS based photocatalysts in future.
