Abstract:Metal-CO2 batteries, especially Li-CO2 and Na-CO2 batteries, offer a novel and attractive strategy for CO2 capture as well as energy conversion and storage with high specific energy densities. However, some scientific issues and challenges existing restrict their practical applications. Here, recent progress of crucial reaction mechanisms on cathodes in Li-CO2 and Na-CO2 batteries are summarized. The detailed reaction pathways can be modified by operation conditions, electrolyte compositions, and catalysts. Besides, specific discussions from aspects of catalyst design, stability of electrolytes, and anode protection are presented. Perspectives of several innovative directions are also put forward. This review provides an intensive understanding of Li-CO2 and Na-CO2 batteries and gives a useful guideline for the practical development of metal-CO2 batteries and even metal-air batteries.

Abstract:In the context of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the recovery and utilization of clean CO2 in energy storage systems have attracted significant attention from researchers. Recently, Li-CO2 batteries, that utilize CO2 as the cathode material, have been proposed to improve the economics of CO2 capture and reduce the accumulation of CO2, which can be applied to address problems with the operating environment. However, as an emerging research direction, this Li-CO2 battery system still faces many difficulties that require to be overcome, such as poor reversibility, low energy efficiency, and high overpotential, which are caused by poor electrochemical reaction kinetics. Therefore, designing and developing catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries with excellent catalytic activity and stability is pivotal in settling the above problems. In this review, the reduction and oxidation mechanisms of Li-O-2/CO2 and Li-CO2 batteries are introduced first. Next, a comprehensive and exhaustive review is provided to discuss the cutting-edge design strategies of materials and structures of metal-based electrocatalysts oriented by Li-CO2 batteries. Finally, based on the research progress of advanced Li-CO2 batteries in the past few years, the opportunities and challenges for the future development of Li-CO2 batteries are highlighted.

Abstract:Lithium carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries, noted for their high discharge voltage of approximately 2.8 V and substantial theoretical specific energy of 1876 Wh kg-1, represent a promising avenue for new energy sources and CO2 emission reduction. However, the practical application of these batteries faces significant hurdles, particularly at high current densities and over extended cycle lives, due to their complex reaction mechanisms and slow kinetics. This paper delves into the recent advancements in cathode catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries, with a specific focus on the designing philosophy from composition, geometry, and homogeneity of the catalysts to the proper test conditions and real-world application. It surveys the possible catalytic mechanisms, giving readers a brief introduction of how the energy is stored and released as well as the critical exploration of the relationship between material properties and performances. Specifically, optimization and standardization of test conditions for Li-CO2 battery research is highlighted to enhance data comparability, which is also critical to facilitate the practical application of Li-CO2 batteries. This review aims to bring up inspiration from previous work to advance the design of more effective and sustainable cathode catalysts, tailored to meet the practical demands of Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Aprotic lithium‐oxygen (Li‐O 2 ) batteries represent a promising next‐generation energy storage system due to their extremely high theoretical specific capacity compared with all known batteries. Their practical realization is impeded, however, by the sluggish kinetics for the most part, resulting in high overpotential and poor cycling performance. Due to the high catalytic activity and favorable stability of Co‐based transition metal oxides, they are regarded as the most likely candidate catalysts, facilitating researchers to solve the sluggish kinetics issue. Herein, this review first presents recent advanced design strategies for Co‐based transition metal oxides in Li‐O 2 batteries. Then, the fundamental insights related to the catalytic processes of Co‐based transition metal oxides in traditional and novel Li‐O 2 electrochemistry systems are summarized. Finally, we conclude with the current limitations and future development directions of Co‐based transition metal oxides, which will contribute to the rational design of catalysts and the practical applications of Li‐O 2 batteries. image

Abstract:Lithium–carbon dioxide (Li–CO2) batteries with a high current density have attracted tremendous research interests in recent years. The review provides the latest progress in hot modulating strategies of the catalysts applied in Li–CO2 batteries and proposes key aspects that need to be addressed for future development, paving an effective avenue for the exploration of novel catalysts for high‐performance Li–CO2 batteries. As a high energy density power system, lithium–carbon dioxide (Li–CO2) batteries play an important role in addressing the fossil fuel crisis issues and alleviating the greenhouse effect. However, the sluggish transformation kinetic of CO2 and the difficult decomposition of discharge products impede the achievement of large capacity, small overpotential, and long life span of the batteries, which require exploring efficient catalysts to resolve these problems. In this review, the main focus is on the hot spot regulation strategies of the catalysts, which include the modulation of the active sites, the designing of microstructure, and the construction of composition. The recent progress of promising catalysis with hot spot regulated strategies is systematically addressed. Critical challenges are also presented and perspectives to provide useful guidance for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for practical advanced Li–CO2 batteries are proposed.

Abstract:Rechargeable aprotic lithium (Li)-O2 batteries with high theoretical energy densities are regarded as promising next-generation energy storage devices and have attracted considerable interest recently. However, these batteries still suffer from many critical issues, such as low capacity, poor cycle life, and low round-trip efficiency, rendering the practical application of these batteries rather sluggish. Cathode catalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and evolution reaction activities are of particular importance for addressing these issues and consequently promoting the application of Li-O2 batteries. Thus, the rational design and preparation of the catalysts with high ORR activity, good electronic conductivity, and decent chemical/electrochemical stability are still challenging. In this Review, the strategies are outlined including the rational selection of catalytic species, the introduction of a 3D porous structure, the formation of functional composites, and the heteroatom doping which succeeded in the design of high-performance cathode catalysts for stable Li-O2 batteries. Perspectives on enhancing the overall electrochemical performance of Li-O2 batteries based on the optimization of the properties and reliability of each part of the battery are also made. This Review sheds some new light on the design of highly active cathode catalysts and the development of high-performance lithium-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li–CO2 batteries provide a promising new approach for carbon capture and energy storage technology. However, their practical application is limited by many challenges despite much progress in this technology. Recent development in Li–CO2 batteries is presented. The reaction mechanism with an air cathode, operating temperatures used, electrochemical performance under different CO2 concentrations, stability of the battery in different electrolytes, and utilization of different cathode materials were emphasized. At last, challenges and perspectives were also presented. This review provides a deep understanding of Li–CO2 batteries and offers important guidelines for developing reversible and high efficiency Li–CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-ion batteries are now considered to be the technology of choice for future hybrid electric and full electric vehicles to address global warming. One of the challenges for improving the performance of lithium ion batteries to meet increasingly demanding requirements for energy storage is the development of suitable cathode materials. The recent advancement of lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxides are investigated as advanced positive cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries. This review aims at providing the reader with an understanding of the critical scientific challenges facing the development of LiNixCoyMn1-x-yO2 materials, the latest developments in crystal structure, synthesis methods, and structure designs to unravel the mechanisms of charge and mass transport processes associated with battery performance, and the outlook for future-generation batteries that exploit gradient structures materials for significantly improved performance to meet the ever-increasing demands of emerging technologies.

Abstract:A lithium-carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) battery offers an effective and efficient approach for the simultaneous CO2 capture and electrical energy generation. However, the useful guidance for the electrode design and the electrolyte selection is still lacking. Herein, we carry out numerical analyses on the effects of design parameters on the discharge voltage plateau and specific capacity. The developed mathematical model concentrates on the integration of mass transport with the electrochemical reaction to describe the transport and kinetics progresses. After validated by experimental data, the effects of cathode geometries, electrolyte transport properties, and solid product component on the discharge behaviors are detailedly analyzed. The results reveal an interesting solid product distribution that more is accumulated near two edges and less is in the center of the cathode. For the electrode design, a thinner electrode with a larger porosity is beneficial for a large capacity, and highly active catalysts can diminish the voltage loss and increase the discharge plateau. For the electrolyte selection, it is suggested that higher CO2 solubility and diffusivity is preferred for the high energy density. Further, the hybrid product component with increasing the carbon content or decreasing the solid Li2CO3 content can lead to more reaction sites. This work gives a valuable direction of parameter selection to facilitate the development of Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for carbon neutrality, Li-CO2 batteries are a promising technology for using CO2 as an energy storage medium and have attracted extensive attention. However, the sluggish kinetics and complex reaction mechanism significantly affect the reversibility of Li-CO2 batteries, which has stimulated the study of reaction pathways, product regulations, and bidirectional catalysts. Modulating the structure of catalysts at the atomic level has attracted increasing attention recently for improving their selectivity and activity, thus accelerating reaction kinetics and regulating the reaction pathways. In this review, we systematically discuss the conversion reaction mechanisms and analyze the key factors that affect the reaction pathways during discharge and charge in Li-CO2 batteries. Then the strategies at the atomic level for developing efficient bidirectional catalysts are highlighted, including their features, advantages, and limitations. Finally, a summary and outlook on fundamental investigation and advanced catalysts development for high-performance Li-CO2 batteries are presented.

Abstract:Rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries have attracted extensive attention owing to their high theoretical energy density (1876 W h Kg-1). However, their practical application is hindered by large polarization, low coulombic efficiency, and cathode degradation. The electrochemical performance of Li-CO2 batteries is significantly affected by the thermodynamic stability and reaction kinetics of discharge products. Although advances have been achieved in cathode design and electrolyte optimization over the past decade, the reaction mechanism of the CO2 cathode has not yet been clear. In this review, various reaction mechanisms of CO2 reduction and evolution at the cathode interface are discussed, including different reaction routes under mixed O2/CO2 and pure CO2 environments. Furthermore, the regulating strategies of different discharge products, including Li2CO3, Li2C2O6, and Li2C2O4, are summarized to decrease the polarization and improve the cycling performance of Li-CO2 batteries. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are discussed from three aspects: reaction mechanisms, cathode catalysts, and electrolyte engineering, offering insights for the development of Li-CO2 batteries in the future.

Abstract:In recent years, the combustion of fossil fuels leads to the release of a large amount of CO2 gas, which induces the greenhouse effect and the energy crisis. To solve these problems, researchers have turned their focus to a novel Li-CO2 battery (LCB). LCB has received much attention because of its high theoretical energy density and reversible CO2 reduction/evolution process. So far, the emerging LCB still faces many challenges derived from the slow reaction kinetics of discharge products. In this review, the latest status and progress of LCB, especially the influence of the structure design of cathode catalysts on the battery performance, are systematically elaborated. This review summarizes in detail the existing issues and possible solutions of LCB, which is of high research value for further promoting the development of Li-Air battery.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries have great potential for applications in electric devices and vehicles due to their high theoretical energy density of 3500 Wh kg-1. Unfortunately, their practical use is seriously limited by the sluggish decomposition of insulating Li2O2, leading to high OER overpotentials and the decomposition of cathodes and electrolytes. Cathode electrocatalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities are critical to alleviate high charge overpotentials and promote cycling stability in Li-O2 batteries. However, constructing catalysts for high OER performance and energy efficiency is always challenging. In this mini-review, we first outline the employment of advanced electrocatalysts such as carbon materials, noble and non-noble metals, and metal-organic frameworks to improve battery performance. We then detail the ORR and OER mechanisms of photo-assisted electrocatalysts and single-atom catalysts for superior Li-O2 battery performance. Finally, we offer perspectives on future development directions for cathode electrocatalysts that will boost the OER kinetics.

Abstract:Lithium‑oxygen, −air, -CO2 are three typical types of Lithium-based batteries, which offer a promising, sustainable, and environment-friendly solution to construct carbon neutral society. Carbon-based cathodes provide active sites for mass and electronic transfer among Li, Li+, O2, Li2O2, LiO2. The synthesis methods of carbon cathode can affect the performance of Lithium-based battery. This review summarizes the fundamentals of carbon-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduced reaction (ORR) electrocatalytic reactions, and then explore a few key concerns on the interrelation between synthesis methods and electrocatalytic activities. Then, the most important tactics: defect engineering, heteroatom doping, and structure optimization for enhancement of electrocatalytic activity are presented. Finally, the most recent advances of carbon-based materials from dimensional views are also discussed. The review would provide insightful opportunities as well as the current challenges to accelerate the research and application on carbon-based materials for Lithium-based batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn–CO 2 battery possesses a large theoretical capacity of 820 mAh g -1 (5855 mAh cm -3 ) and high safety, showing a unique position in carbon neutrality and/or reduction and energy conversion and storage, which has developed rapidly in recent years. However, obstacles such as low value-added products, low current density, high overvoltage, and finite cycles impede its practical application. Cathode catalysts, as a key component, have a significant influence on gas cell performance. Despite many updated papers on cathode materials for aqueous Zn–CO 2 batteries, a systematic summary has rarely been reported, and even less is mentioned about the design principle and development strategy for efficient catalysts. Relying on the structure and mechanism of the Zn–CO 2 battery, this review discusses the research progress and existing challenges, and, more importantly, the design strategies and preparation methods of the efficient cathode are proposed, centering on material structure, charge distribution, and coordination environment. Finally, in this review, the opportunities for the development of a high-performance Zn–CO 2 battery are highlighted, which enables enlightening the future exploration of next-generation energy storage systems.

Abstract:At present, the capacity of commercial graphite anode materials for lithium-ion batteries is close to the theoretical value, which limits the development of power batteries. Therefore, it is particularly important to develop anode materials with high capacity, good stability, long cycle life, and excellent rate performance. Co-based oxide materials are one of the ideal anode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their high specific capacity. In this review, the influence of the increase of active sites of Co-based oxides to promote lithium storage performance is reviewed from the structural design including the construction of one-dimensional structures, two-dimensional structures, three-dimensional structures, hollow structures, carbon material support structures, and heterostructures. The control of intrinsic activity includes the introduction of amorphous structure, non-metallic heteroatom doping, metal heteroatom doping, and the construction of high-entropy oxides. Finally, the future development of Co-based oxides in the field of lithium-ion batteries is prospected.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries are considered as the next generation for energy storages systems due to the higher theoretical energy density than that of Li-ion batteries. However, the high charge overpotential caused by the insulated Li2O2 results in low energy efficiency, side reaction from electrolyte and cathode, and therefore poor battery performance. Designing noble metal-based catalysts can be an effective strategy to develop high-performance Li-O2 batteries with low charge overpotentials and outstanding cycle stability. However, the charge mechanism for noble metal-based catalysts is not clear and even contradictory. Herein, several charge mechanisms of Li2O2 are first discussed. Subsequently, the possible charge processes of Li-O2 batteries with noble metal-based catalysts are illustrated. In addition, the future development for noble metal-based catalysts is outlined.
