Abstract:Rechargeable Li–CO2 batteries provide a promising new approach for carbon capture and energy storage technology. However, their practical application is limited by many challenges despite much progress in this technology. Recent development in Li–CO2 batteries is presented. The reaction mechanism with an air cathode, operating temperatures used, electrochemical performance under different CO2 concentrations, stability of the battery in different electrolytes, and utilization of different cathode materials were emphasized. At last, challenges and perspectives were also presented. This review provides a deep understanding of Li–CO2 batteries and offers important guidelines for developing reversible and high efficiency Li–CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Metal-CO2 batteries, especially Li-CO2 and Na-CO2 batteries, offer a novel and attractive strategy for CO2 capture as well as energy conversion and storage with high specific energy densities. However, some scientific issues and challenges existing restrict their practical applications. Here, recent progress of crucial reaction mechanisms on cathodes in Li-CO2 and Na-CO2 batteries are summarized. The detailed reaction pathways can be modified by operation conditions, electrolyte compositions, and catalysts. Besides, specific discussions from aspects of catalyst design, stability of electrolytes, and anode protection are presented. Perspectives of several innovative directions are also put forward. This review provides an intensive understanding of Li-CO2 and Na-CO2 batteries and gives a useful guideline for the practical development of metal-CO2 batteries and even metal-air batteries.

Abstract:Achieving the target of carbon neutrality has become a pressing global imperative in the world where the imminent threat of greenhouse gas emissions looms large. Metal-CO2 batteries, which possess dual functions of CO2 utilization and electrical energy storage, are considered as one of the promising emission reduction strategies. Among varieties of metal-CO2 batteries, Li-CO2 batteries have the highest thermodynamic equilibrium potential (similar to 2.80 V) and the largest theoretical specific energy (similar to 1880 Wh kg(-1)), making them the center of research efforts and potentially transformational energy storage technologies. However, the development of Li-CO2 batteries is still in its early stages. The complicated CO2 reduction and evolution mechanisms have not been fully understood. Widely accepted CO2 reduction products are Li2CO3 and carbon. These products are produced following a surface-mediated or solution-mediated discharge pathway depending on the adsorption energy of cathode catalysts to intermediates and the solubility of intermediates in electrolytes. During charging, the self-decomposition of Li2CO3 or the reversible codecomposition of Li2CO3 and carbon could occur while applying different catalysts. In addition to the selection of catalysts, the modification of electrolyte components and the control of operation conditions can also affect the reaction processes, contributing to diverse reduction products including Li2C2O4, Li2CO3 and CO, as well as Li2O and carbon. Nonetheless, the exact determining factors of controlling reaction routes have been inconclusive. Besides, owing to the intrinsic properties of CO2 reactants and reduction products as well as the sluggish reaction kinetics at multiphase interfaces, Li-CO2 batteries are confronted with large overpotentials and undesirable parasitic reactions. Further improvement in battery performance, especially the energy efficiency and cyclic life, is necessary to propel the development of practical Li-CO2 batteries. In this Account, we summarize our and the community's efforts on the investigation of Li-CO2 batteries as an attractive avenue toward carbon neutrality. We start with a brief introduction of the physicochemical properties of CO2 and an in-depth discussion about the fundamental CO2 reduction and evolution reactions across multiphase interfaces. Then, diverse reaction pathways and underlying affecting factors involving catalysts, electrolytes, and operation conditions are highlighted. Furthermore, enhancement strategies for Li-CO2 batteries from four aspects of catalyst design, electrolyte modification, anode protection, and external field assistance are presented based on our recent works. At the end of the Account, we provide some potential directions in deepening the understanding of Li-CO2 batteries, optimizing battery performance, and broadening their application toward future carbon-neutral technologies.

Abstract:Li−CO2 batteries correspond to renewable energy storage in a cost‐effective, eco‐friendly CO2 fixation manner. However, an inadequate understanding of their reaction mechanism severely impedes their development. Here we outline recent mechanistic advances in the discharge processes of Li−CO2 batteries, especially from the theoretical aspect. We first highlight the vital factors affecting the formation of discharge intermediates and a surface lithiation mechanism that may dominate the catalysts with weak CO2 adsorption. Then, we discuss the modeling of the chemical potential of Li+ + e−, which is crucial for the evaluation of the theoretical limiting voltage. Finally, we describe challenges and future directions to facilitate the understanding of Li−CO2 electrochemistry. This concept article would inspire more experimental and theoretical studies to advance the development of Li−CO2 electrochemical technology.

Approaching Splendid Catalysts for Li-CO2 Battery from the Theory to Practical Designing: A Review

Abstract:Lithium carbon dioxide (Li-CO2) batteries, noted for their high discharge voltage of approximately 2.8 V and substantial theoretical specific energy of 1876 Wh kg-1, represent a promising avenue for new energy sources and CO2 emission reduction. However, the practical application of these batteries faces significant hurdles, particularly at high current densities and over extended cycle lives, due to their complex reaction mechanisms and slow kinetics. This paper delves into the recent advancements in cathode catalysts for Li-CO2 batteries, with a specific focus on the designing philosophy from composition, geometry, and homogeneity of the catalysts to the proper test conditions and real-world application. It surveys the possible catalytic mechanisms, giving readers a brief introduction of how the energy is stored and released as well as the critical exploration of the relationship between material properties and performances. Specifically, optimization and standardization of test conditions for Li-CO2 battery research is highlighted to enhance data comparability, which is also critical to facilitate the practical application of Li-CO2 batteries. This review aims to bring up inspiration from previous work to advance the design of more effective and sustainable cathode catalysts, tailored to meet the practical demands of Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:In recent years, the combustion of fossil fuels leads to the release of a large amount of CO2 gas, which induces the greenhouse effect and the energy crisis. To solve these problems, researchers have turned their focus to a novel Li-CO2 battery (LCB). LCB has received much attention because of its high theoretical energy density and reversible CO2 reduction/evolution process. So far, the emerging LCB still faces many challenges derived from the slow reaction kinetics of discharge products. In this review, the latest status and progress of LCB, especially the influence of the structure design of cathode catalysts on the battery performance, are systematically elaborated. This review summarizes in detail the existing issues and possible solutions of LCB, which is of high research value for further promoting the development of Li-Air battery.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-O2/CO2 and lithium-CO2 batteries are the promising energy devices expected to be the next generation of lithium batteries with high energy densities. However, their unsatisfactory performance of crucial materials such as electrodes, catalysts and electrolytes are still the challenges hindering the technology’s practical applications. To develop high-performance lithium-CO2 batteries, worldwide researchers have been focusing on exploring new electrode/electrolyte materials and the related technologies by developing novel synthesis methods and innovative assembling techniques, understanding degradation mechanisms, and creating mitigation strategies with particular emphasis on catalysts for CO2 reduction reaction and CO2 evolution reaction as well as their reaction products. In this paper, the state-of-the-art development in lithium-CO2 battery key materials, components and device assembling along with functional and degradation mechanisms and mitigation strategies are comprehensively reviewed. To facilitate further research and development of lithium-CO2 batteries toward practical applications, the existing challenges and several future research directions are discussed in this paper.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for carbon neutrality, Li-CO2 batteries are a promising technology for using CO2 as an energy storage medium and have attracted extensive attention. However, the sluggish kinetics and complex reaction mechanism significantly affect the reversibility of Li-CO2 batteries, which has stimulated the study of reaction pathways, product regulations, and bidirectional catalysts. Modulating the structure of catalysts at the atomic level has attracted increasing attention recently for improving their selectivity and activity, thus accelerating reaction kinetics and regulating the reaction pathways. In this review, we systematically discuss the conversion reaction mechanisms and analyze the key factors that affect the reaction pathways during discharge and charge in Li-CO2 batteries. Then the strategies at the atomic level for developing efficient bidirectional catalysts are highlighted, including their features, advantages, and limitations. Finally, a summary and outlook on fundamental investigation and advanced catalysts development for high-performance Li-CO2 batteries are presented.

In vivo predictors of renal cyst pseudoenhancement at 120 kVp.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The purpose of this article is to assess the effects of various CT, patient, and renal cyst characteristics on the occurrence of pseudoenhancement in in vivo renal mass CT examinations using subtraction MRI as the reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS Adult patients imaged with 120-kVp standard kernel biphasic renal mass protocol CT and dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of the abdomen from January 1, 2005, through May 4, 2012, were identified. Those with nonenhancing Bosniak categories I and II cysts on MRI were selected (n = 33 patients; 110 cysts). By treating measured cyst enhancement (nephrographic CT attenuation minus unenhanced CT attenuation) as either a continuous or categoric outcome variable, a variety of CT, patient-level, and renal cyst characteristics were assessed using mixed effect multivariate models. RESULTS On univariate assessment, cysts that exhibited pseudoenhancement (> 10 HU) were significantly more endophytic (p = 0.02), significantly smaller (p = 0.0004), and adjacent to significantly higher attenuation renal parenchyma in the nephrographic phase (p = 0.02). On multivariate assessment, cyst diameter (p < 0.0001) and background nephrographic phase parenchymal attenuation (p = 0.003) were the strongest in vivo predictors of pseudoenhancement. The odds of pseudoenhancement occurring increased by 2.14 (95% CI, 1.41-3.23) for every 5-mm decrease in renal cyst diameter and increased by 2.45 (95% CI, 1.41-4.26) for every 25-HU increase in enhanced renal parenchymal attenuation. Endophytic growth was not significant in the multivariate analyses (p = 0.07). CONCLUSION Renal cyst size and enhanced renal parenchymal attenuation are better in vivo predictors of pseudoenhancement than is endophytic growth pattern.

Abstract:The sluggish CO2 reduction and evolution reaction kinetics are thorny problems for developing high-performance Li-CO2 batteries. For the complicated multiphase reactions and multielectron transfer processes in Li-CO2 batteries, exploring efficient cathode catalysts and understanding the interplay between structure and activity are crucial to couple with these pendent challenges. In this work, we applied the CoS as a model catalyst and adjusted its electronic structure by introducing sulfur vacancies to optimize the d-band and p-band centers, which steer the orbital hybridization and boost the redox kinetics between Li and CO2, thus improving the discharge platform of Li-CO2 batteries and altering the deposition behavior of discharge products. As a result, a highly efficient bidirectional catalyst exhibits an ultrasmall overpotential of 0.62 V and a high energy efficiency of 82.8% and circulates stably for nearly 600 h. Meanwhile, density functional theory calculations and multiphysics simulations further elucidate the mechanism of bidirectional activity. This work not only provides a proof of concept to design a remarkably efficient catalyst but also sheds light on promoting the reversible Li-CO2 reaction by tailoring the electronic structure.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary The increasing demand for high‐energy storage systems has propelled the development of Li‐air batteries and Li‐O2/CO2 batteries to elucidate the mechanism and extend battery life. However, the high charge voltage of Li2CO3 accelerates the decomposition of traditional sulfone and ether electrolytes, thus adopting high‐voltage electrolytes in Li‐O2/CO2 batteries is vital to achieve a stable battery system. Herein, we adopt a commercial carbonate electrolyte to prove its excellent suitability in Li‐O2/CO2 batteries. The generated superoxide can be captured by CO2 to form less aggressive intermediates, stabilizing the carbonate electrolyte without reactive oxygen species induced decomposition. In addition, this electrolyte permits the Li metal plating/stripping with a significantly improved reversibility, enabling the possibility of using ultra‐thin Li anode. Benefiting from the good rechargeability of Li2CO3, less cathode passivation, and stabilized Li anode in carbonate electrolyte, the Li‐O2/CO2 battery demonstrates a long cycling lifetime of 167 cycles at 0.1 mA cm–2 and 0.25 mAh cm–2. This work paves a new avenue for optimizing carbonate‐based electrolytes for Li‐O2 and Li‐O2/CO2 batteries. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-oxygen batteries, especially the nonaqueous lithium-oxygen batteries have attracted much attention in recent years due to their high energy densities. However, few critical challenges remain to be overcome, including the low round-trip efficiency, high charge overpotential, poor cycling performance, decomposition of electrolyte, and instability of the carbon-based electrode. Among these, the instability of the carbon-based electrode is one of the major problems that hindered the practical application of the Li-O-2 batteries. Much work has been done to solve this problem and there are two widely-applied strategies: modification of carbon and designing a "carbon-free" cathode. In this review, we will introduce recent achievements of both strategies.

Abstract:Li-CO2 batteries arouse great interest in the context of carbon neutralization, but their practicability is severely hindered by the sluggish CO2 redox reaction kinetics at the cathode, which brings about formidable challenges such as high overpotential and low Coulombic efficiency. For the complex multi-electron transfer process, the design of catalysts at the molecular or atomic level and the understanding of the relationship between electron state and performance are essential for the CO2 redox. However, little attention is paid to it. In this work, using Co3S4 as a model system, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the adjusted d-band and p-band centers of Co3S4 with the introduction of Cu and sulfur vacancies are hybridized between CO2 and Li species, respectively, which is conducive to the adsorption of reactants and the decomposition of Li2CO3, and the experimental results further verify the effectiveness of energy band engineering. As a result, a highly efficient bidirectional catalyst is produced and shows an ultra-small voltage gap of 0.73 V and marvelous Coulombic efficiency of 92.6%, surpassing those of previous catalysts under similar conditions. This work presents an effective catalyst design and affords new insight into the high-performance cathode catalyst materials for Li-CO2 batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable aprotic lithium (Li)-O2 batteries with high theoretical energy densities are regarded as promising next-generation energy storage devices and have attracted considerable interest recently. However, these batteries still suffer from many critical issues, such as low capacity, poor cycle life, and low round-trip efficiency, rendering the practical application of these batteries rather sluggish. Cathode catalysts with high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and evolution reaction activities are of particular importance for addressing these issues and consequently promoting the application of Li-O2 batteries. Thus, the rational design and preparation of the catalysts with high ORR activity, good electronic conductivity, and decent chemical/electrochemical stability are still challenging. In this Review, the strategies are outlined including the rational selection of catalytic species, the introduction of a 3D porous structure, the formation of functional composites, and the heteroatom doping which succeeded in the design of high-performance cathode catalysts for stable Li-O2 batteries. Perspectives on enhancing the overall electrochemical performance of Li-O2 batteries based on the optimization of the properties and reliability of each part of the battery are also made. This Review sheds some new light on the design of highly active cathode catalysts and the development of high-performance lithium-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Li-CO2 batteries with dual efficacy for greenhouse gas CO2 sequestration and high energy output have been regarded as a promising electrochemical energy storage technology. However, battery feasibility has been hampered by inferior electrochemical performance due to large overpotentials and low cyclability primarily caused by the difficult decomposition of ultra-stable Li2CO3 during charge. The use of cathode catalysts has been highlighted as a promising solution and catalyst properties, as well as the nature of discharge products, are closely correlated with electrochemical performance. Here, the catalyst design strategies that include active site enrichment, electrical transport enhancement, and mass transfer improvement are summarized. Catalyst effects on product decomposition are then subsequently introduced, while product geometry and chemical composition will be explored, with an emphasis on the formation/decomposition of Li2C2O4 instead of Li2CO3. Building on previous research, future directions that facilitate improvements in catalyst design are put forward to reinforce the fundamental development of Li-CO2 batteries.
Energy Band Engineering Guided Design of Bidirectional Catalyst for Reversible Li–CO 2 Batteries

Abstract:Abstract Li–CO 2 batteries arouse great interest in the context of carbon neutralization, but their practicability is severely hindered by the sluggish CO 2 redox reaction kinetics at the cathode, which brings about formidable challenges such as high overpotential and low Coulombic efficiency. For the complex multi‐electron transfer process, the design of catalysts at the molecular or atomic level and the understanding of the relationship between electron state and performance are essential for the CO 2 redox. However, little attention is paid to it. In this work, using Co 3 S 4 as a model system, density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the adjusted d ‐band and p ‐band centers of Co 3 S 4 with the introduction of Cu and sulfur vacancies are hybridized between CO 2 and Li species, respectively, which is conducive to the adsorption of reactants and the decomposition of Li 2 CO 3 , and the experimental results further verify the effectiveness of energy band engineering. As a result, a highly efficient bidirectional catalyst is produced and shows an ultra‐small voltage gap of 0.73 V and marvelous Coulombic efficiency of 92.6%, surpassing those of previous catalysts under similar conditions. This work presents an effective catalyst design and affords new insight into the high‐performance cathode catalyst materials for Li–CO 2 batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery is a potential candidate to be next-generation commercial battery due to high theoretical capacity and energy density among the various rechargeable batteries. However, there are still some obstacles that hindering its commercial application due to the unsatisfactory practical electrochemical performance, including low discharge capacity, poor rate capability, high overpotential, and unstable cycle lifespan, etc. Rational design of cathode materials is demonstrated to be an efficient route to greatly ameliorate the aforementioned existential issues of Li-O2 battery system. Herein, the recent advances in the design and preparation of cathode materials for Li-O2 batteries were summarized in this review. The basic principles and comprehending of reaction mechanism for Li-O2 batteries were proposed in the first part. The following part introduced the latest research and development of the component design of cathode, including carbon-based materials, noble metals, transition metals and their compounds, bimetallic oxides, redox mediators, and photo-assisted catalysts. Then, the structure‐property relationship with different dimensions was covered. In addition, attempts to improve the electrochemical properties of Li-O2 batteries electrode materials via surface engineering, containing heterojunction construction, vacancy regulation, and optimization of exposed crystal planes were discussed. Eventually, a brief conclusion about the challenging and existing problems for Li-O2 batteries was proposed and some perspective related to the development direction were put out. This work will motivate the preparation of oxygen electrodes with stability and efficient catalytic activity for high performance Li-O2 batteries, aims to promote the commercial application of rechargeable Li-O2 energy storages.Graphical abstractThis minireview summarizes the latest research and development of the component design of cathode and their improved strategy, promoting the commercial application of rechargeable Li-O2 energy storages.
