Abstract:In the twentieth century, revolutionary changes took place in the human society and people’s life-style due to the improvement of the optoelectronic information technology based on the second-order nonlinear optical effects, such as the electro-optic effect, the second harmonic generation (SHG), and so on. Along with the rapid development of light information technology, new principles and methods of nonlinear optics are needed, and the third-order nonlinear optical effects attract great attention. The research progress of nonlinear optics is reviewed in this article. Our research work on the third-order nonlinear optical materials, ultrafast and low-power organic all-optical photonic crystal switching are introduced.

Abstract:Compared with traditional inorganic second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, organic second-order NLO materials have many advantages in bandwidth, dielectric constant, half-wave voltage, electro-optic (EO) coefficients, processability, and material cost. Due to their potential applications in telecommunications, computing, detection, terahertz generation, and construction of functional photonic crystals, organic NLO materials have been widely studied for several decades. Currently, the poling efficiency and long-term stability are the largest obstacles for the application of organic NLO materials. At the molecular level, these problems are mainly caused by the strong dipole–dipole intermolecular interactions between the NLO chromophores with D-π-A structures. In the molecular design of the polymer system, modification of the chromophores is considered to be an efficient pathway to solve this problem. Since 2009, many studies have been performed by our group to reduce the strong dipole–dipole intermolecular interactions between the chromophores. In this review, the development of organic NLO materials in recent years is summarized, including the following: 1) a brief introduction of organic second-order NLO materials, 2) the requirements of NLO materials for applications in devices, 3) optimization of the first-order hyperpolarizability of NLO chromophores, 4) the optimization of the chromophore loading parameters (N, ), and 5) improvements of the stabilities of organic NLO materials.

Abstract:By incorporating functionality from both inorganic and organic components,hybrid organic-inorganic second-order nonlinear optical materials exhibit high nonlinear optics(NLO) efficiency,good thermal and temporal stability,and have drawn considerable attention due to their application in electro-optic modulations and laser second-order harmonic generation.In this article the strategies to improve their NLO performance and stability,and the recent research progress in the application of hybrid Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulators are reviewed.To optimize NLO performance and film fabrication,a promising method to improve the compatibility of the hybrid NLO materials via hyperbranched structure is suggested.

Abstract:In recent years, the application of terahertz technology has gained substantial recognition across various domains. Nonlinear optical crystals have garnered emerged as a focal point of attention due to their pivotal role in advancing this technology. Within the realm of these crystals, organic second-order nonlinear optical materials stand out for their remarkable attributes. Their large nonlinear coefficient, elevated electro-optical coefficient, and low dielectric constant position them as exceptional materials for terahertz radiation sources. This article delves into a comprehensive exploration of two distinct categories of crystals: ionic and molecular. It provides an insightful overview of the structural design strategies employed in these crystals. Furthermore, this paper conducts a thorough analysis of the shared and different properties between these diverse crystal types, including optical, thermal, mechanical and nonlinear aspects. This in-depth exploration paves the way for a better understanding of the potential applications of these crystals in the ever-expanding realm of terahertz technology.

Abstract:Information technology is increasingly driving towards photonics, i.e., exploiting light signals on the basis of nonlinear optical effects [1-3]. Progress in photonic devices requires the development of novel materials exhibiting strong optical nonlinearities, especially organic conjugated compounds. These are of interest, not only because of their large hyperpolarizabilities and very fast responses (that are electronic in character), but also because of the possibilities of. tailored syntheses (adapting the molecular architecture at best for a given nonlinear optical process), multiple processing ways (namely in thin films), high damage thresholds, and appearance of novel mechanisms for optical nonlinearities.Here, we present a review of some of our recent work on the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of conjugated oligomers and polymers. We first briefly present the nature and merits of the computational techniques we have been using. We then discuss a novel type of second-order materials which by symmetry possess no dipole moment. We finally focus on third-order materials and examine the influence of molecular architecture and chain length on the nonlinear optical response.

Abstract:Organic optoelectronic molecules with resonance effects are a striking class of functional materials that have witnessed booming progress in recent years. Various resonances induced by particularly constructed molecular structures can effectively influence key photophysical processes to afford particular optoelectronic properties of the organic resonance materials. The charge transport behaviors were tuned to be dynamic and self-adaptive; emission spectra were made to be very narrow with high color purity; optical bandgaps were significantly reduced, and intersystem crossing was greatly promoted. Therefore, great success has been achieved in various optoelectronic devices by using organic resonance materials to function as smart host materials with high triplet energies, highly luminescent emitters with high quantum yields and narrow emission bands, efficient organic afterglow molecules, and sensitive fluorescent probes. In this Perspective, material design principles, molecular structures and properties, and device performance of organic resonance materials are highlighted and future directions and challenges for this series of amazing materials are discussed.

Abstract:Many recent activities in the use of one-dimensional nanostructures as photonic elements for optical information processing are explained by huge advantages that photonic circuits possess over traditional silicon-based electronic ones in bandwidth, heat dissipation, and resistance to electromagnetic wave interference. Organic materials are a promising candidate to support these optical-related applications, as they combine the properties of plastics with broad spectral tunability, high optical cross-section, easy fabrication, as well as low cost. Their outstanding compatibility allows organic composite structures which are made of two or more kinds of materials combined together, showing great superiority to single-component materials due to the introduced interactions among multiple constituents, such as energy transfer, electron transfer, exciton coupling, etc. The easy processability of organic 1D crystalline heterostructures enables a fine topological control of both composition and geometry, which offsets the intrinsic deficiencies of individual material. At the same time, the strong exciton-photon coupling and exciton-exciton interaction impart the excellent confinement of photons in organic microstructures, thus light can be manipulated according to our intention to realize specific functions. These collective properties indicate a potential utility of organic heterogeneous material for miniaturized photonic circuitry. Herein, focus is given on recent advances of 1D organic crystalline heterostructures, with special emphasis on the novel design, controllable construction, diverse performance, as well as wide applications in isolated photonic elements for integration. It is proposed that the highly coupled, hybrid optical networks would be an important material basis towards the creation of on-chip optical information processing.

Abstract:Recent advances in developing nonlinear optical techniques for processing serial digital information at high speed are reviewed. The field has been transformed by the advent of semiconductor nonlinear devices capable of operation at 100 gigabits per second and higher, well beyond the current speed limits of commercial electronics. These devices are expected to become important in future high-capacity communications networks by allowing digital regeneration and other processing functions to be performed on data signals “on the fly” in the optical domain.

Recently, various types of non‐classical chromophores have been developed, in the hope that they have improved physical properties for materials formation. The main research directions and latest developments reviewed here include multi‐dipolar chromophoric assemblies, multiple donor and acceptor chromophores, non‐rod‐shaped dipolar chromophores, and non‐conjugated donor‐acceptor chromophores, in which the charge transfer process is through space instead of the π‐conjugated bridge.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites feature characteristics of inherent quantum-well structures and intriguing optoelectronic properties, and have therefore attracted enormous research attention for their optical applications in light emitting, sensing, modulation, and telecommunication devices. The low-cost and solution-processed fabrications as well as alternative organic spacer cations endue 2D hybrid perovskites with higher tunability in optical and photonic applications. In particular, they demonstrate distinguished nonlinear optical characters such as second-harmonic generation (SHG), two-photon absorption (2PA), and saturable absorption (SA) under the excitation of laser pulses. Here, we discuss the construction of the various sorts of 2D hybrid perovskites with different structural features. We have also highlighted some representative properties and applications of these 2D hybrid perovskites in both linear and nonlinear optical regimes.

Abstract:We have measured the third-order optical nonlinearity of the organic-inorganic hybrid materials of supermolecules (C19H25N2)7Hn[P2Mo18-n VnO62] (n = 1, 2, 4, 5) and their reactants (C19H25N2)Br and Hn+6[P2Mo18-n Vn O62]by using the ultrafast optical Kerr effect at 830nm wavelength, with time resolution of 115fs. By comparing the γ values of the supermolecules and their reactants, it is concluded that the charge-transfer enhanced remarkably the third-order optical nonlinearity of the compounds. With the increment of the number of the vanadium atoms,the electron distribution changed strongly and the γ value decreased dramatically.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic thickness, tunable light-matter interaction, and significant nonlinear susceptibility are emerging as potential candidates for new-generation optoelectronic devices. In this review, we briefly cover the recent research development of typical nonlinear optic (NLO) processes including second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG), as well as two-photon photoluminescence (2PPL) of 2D materials. Nonlinear light-matter interaction in atomically thin 2D materials is important for both fundamental research and future optoelectronic devices. The NLO performance of 2D materials can be greatly modulated with methods such as carrier injection tuning, strain tuning, artificially stacking, as well as plasmonic resonant enhancement. This review will discuss various nonlinear optical processes and corresponding tuning methods and propose its potential NLO application of 2D materials.

Abstract:Photonic integrated circuits have found a remarkable range of applications in both fundamental science and commercial products. The development of photonic integrated circuits that use highly efficiency nonlinear optical materials as optical waveguides opens opportunities to achieve low power, on chip optical signal processing. In this article, we discussed the latest developments of two state-of-the-art second order nonlinear optical waveguide platforms, namely lithium niobate on insulator and aluminum gallium arsenide on insulator. We also presented some new progress we made in device performance and system integration. The demonstrated ultra-efficient conversion in those platforms paves the way for high performance optical signal processing, bringing an essential functionality from bench-top level into photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:Organic second-order nonlinear optical materials have been intensely pursued for the past two decades. Remarkable progress has been made in the design and synthesis of chromophores with exceptionally high-/spl mu//spl beta/ values. The superior nonlinearity, along with the inherent ultrafast response and large laser damage threshold, suggests that organic NLO materials are ideal for electro-optic and telecommunication applications. Here, we wish to report our preliminary progress in developing a crosslinked (XL) polymeric material containing a high-/spl mu//spl beta/ chromophore DHPT. At present, the largest electro-optic coefficient obtained from the polymer (20% loading by weight) is 27.5 pm/V (at 1.06 /spl mu/m).
