Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations have enabled numerous novel applications, such as frequency conversion, all-optical modulation, and ultrafast optical switching. Recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allow unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. In this chapter, we discuss the concepts of nonlinear optical effects and introduce several nonlinear optical applications, including broadband terahertz source based on plasmonic metasurfaces, nonlinear Fano resonances, and nonlinear interaction of topological graphene plasmons.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations can produce many exotic optical phenomena and are the basis of many novel applications of modern optics, including optical communications systems, optical sensing, and materials research. In recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allows unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. With the spectacular experimental development of nonlinear optics, computational methods and techniques for nonlinear optics have obtained prominent progress. This chapter summarizes the computational methods of free-carrier nonlinearities via the hydrodynamic description in a nonperturbative regime and bound-state electron nonlinearities via the Maxwell-Bloch description in a simplified two-level quantum system. The full-wave consideration of nonlinear dynamics of plasmonics and bound-state electrons reveals key contributions to the emerging nonlinear optical applications and allows the design of high effective nonlinearities in a desired spectral range.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:This invited plenary contribution presents some of our recent results in the area of optical nonlinear devices. It also briefly reviews the origins and past developments of what became a field of photonics. In conclusion it makes an attempt to suggest where photonics research might be directed in the future, which would truly materialize its inherent pervasiveness.

Abstract:In order to know how we can design effective NLO materials, we have studied several series of aromatic hydrocarbons used as NLO materials and found criteria as follows: (1) When the conjugated system is small then the nitro-group is an effective acceptor, and some of this kind of compound has a very high SHG response while fairly big conjugated compounds whose acceptor is nitro-group often reveal weak or no nonlinearity. (2) The compounds whose acceptor (-NO2) and donor (-NH2, -NHR or -NR2) are para-substituted on both ends of the conjugated chains always have very weak or SHG (second harmonic generation). (3) The substituted groups such as -CH3, -OCH3, -X(-Cl, -Br, -1) and biphenyl (C6H5C6H4-) are the best donors which are beneficial to SHG response and transparency. (4) The relatively big conjugated compounds often reveal fairly good second-order nonlinearity when greater than C equals O acts as their acceptor. We studied these laws theoretically and experimentally so as to give some useful guides to the research of the SHG materials.

Abstract:Information technology is increasingly driving towards photonics, i.e., exploiting light signals on the basis of nonlinear optical effects [1-3]. Progress in photonic devices requires the development of novel materials exhibiting strong optical nonlinearities, especially organic conjugated compounds. These are of interest, not only because of their large hyperpolarizabilities and very fast responses (that are electronic in character), but also because of the possibilities of. tailored syntheses (adapting the molecular architecture at best for a given nonlinear optical process), multiple processing ways (namely in thin films), high damage thresholds, and appearance of novel mechanisms for optical nonlinearities.Here, we present a review of some of our recent work on the nonlinear optical (NLO) response of conjugated oligomers and polymers. We first briefly present the nature and merits of the computational techniques we have been using. We then discuss a novel type of second-order materials which by symmetry possess no dipole moment. We finally focus on third-order materials and examine the influence of molecular architecture and chain length on the nonlinear optical response.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics investigates the light-matter interactions in media, in which the dielectric polarization of the medium responds nonlinearly to the electric and/or magnetic field of the light. Materials with the potential for a large, fast, and broadband nonlinear response have been explored for decades; if realized, these would revolutionize nonlinear optics, leading to low-power, compact, and ultrafast applications. However, the materials now available are limited, either by relatively low nonlinear susceptibilities for ultrafast nonlinear processes or by slow response times attributable to photorefractive effect and thermal nonlinear phenomena. Moreover, growing demand for integration of multiple optoelectronic functionalities on a chip calls for nonlinear materials that are compatible with standard fabrication approaches, such as complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology. Metamaterials have been predicted to enable a plethora of novel light-matter interactions, including magnetic nonlinear response, backward phase-matching, and the nonlinear mirror ( 1 – 3 ). Linear optical properties such as dielectric permittivity, magnetic permeability, and refractive index can be designed to be positive, negative, or even zero by properly tailoring various properties of meta-atoms (the unit cells of metamaterials). Engineering nonlinear properties of metamaterials beyond those available in nature may be feasible by judiciously designing their quantum, geometric, and topological properties ( 4 ).

Abstract:Fluorenone molecular materials provide an excellent platform to engineer new materials that are very promising for photonic and optoelectronic applications, such as very efficient optical second harmonic (SHG) and terahertz (THz) generation, light emitting diodes, biomarkers, solar cells, and sensors. More recently, there have been a lot of research efforts dedicated towards the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these fluorenone materials because of their unique combination of chemical, structural, and optical properties. This review addresses the state of the art of this very interesting and potent class of molecular materials. In particular, the NLO susceptibilities, their potential for optical SHG and THz generation and their two-photon luminescence properties and how to optimize these by rational design are reviewed. Flexibility and easiness of modification of their molecular properties combined with their structural polymorphism enable a variety of applications. Perspectives and future research directions for these fluorenone materials are also presented.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) processes in pi-electron organic and polymer systems have attracted considerable interest because their understanding has led onto many compelling technological promise as well as the discovery of new phenomena, new theoretical insights, and new materials and devices. In recent years, as the field has progressed toward technological applications, the main issues have focused on high-performance materials that comply with device manufacturing and end-use conditions. New challenges in materials synthesis are being presented. In has now been demonstrated on pilot plant scales that high-performance electro-optic polymer thin films can be routinely used in optoelectronic integrated circuit fabrication in existing microelectronic device manufacturing facilities. The key steps are standard, including spin coating, photolithography, etching, metallization, and multilayer assembly. Nanocrystal quantum dots (QDs) have been incorporated into various NLO polymers and the optical properties of the nanocomposite films have been studied by femtosecond laser Z-scan instrumentation. Nanodevices have been fabricated by UV-assisted imprinting fabrication techniques. Photonic devices based on nanomaterials and ring resonators e.g., optical switches and dispersion compensators, are discussed.

Abstract:In the twentieth century, revolutionary changes took place in the human society and people’s life-style due to the improvement of the optoelectronic information technology based on the second-order nonlinear optical effects, such as the electro-optic effect, the second harmonic generation (SHG), and so on. Along with the rapid development of light information technology, new principles and methods of nonlinear optics are needed, and the third-order nonlinear optical effects attract great attention. The research progress of nonlinear optics is reviewed in this article. Our research work on the third-order nonlinear optical materials, ultrafast and low-power organic all-optical photonic crystal switching are introduced.

Abstract:2D layered materials (2DLMs) are a subject of intense research for a wide variety of applications (e.g., electronics, photonics, and optoelectronics) due to their unique physical properties. Most recently, increasing research efforts on 2DLMs are projected toward the nonlinear optical properties of 2DLMs, which are not only fascinating from the fundamental science point of view but also intriguing for various potential applications. Here, the current state of the art in the field of nonlinear optics based on 2DLMs and their hybrid structures (e.g., mixed-dimensional heterostructures, plasmonic structures, and silicon/fiber integrated structures) is reviewed. Several potential perspectives and possible future research directions of these promising nanomaterials for nonlinear optics are also presented.

Abstract:Abstract Nonlinear optical effects have enabled numerous applications such as laser frequency conversion, ultrafast electro-optical, and all-optical modulation. Both gaseous and bulk media have conventionally been used for free-space nonlinear optical applications, yet they often require complex phase-matching techniques for efficient operation and may have limited operation bandwidth due to the material absorption. In the last decade, meta-optics made of subwavelength antennas or films have emerged as novel nonlinear optical media that may potentially overcome certain limitations of bulk crystals. Due to resonant enhancements of the pump laser field as well as the use of materials with extreme nonlinearity such as epsilon-near-zero materials, meta-optics can achieve strong nonlinear responses with a subwavelength thickness. Here, we review several nonlinear optical applications, such as electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation, entangled photon pair generation, terahertz generation, all-optical modulation, and high-harmonic generation that we envision meta-optics may have distinct advantages over their bulk counterparts. We outline the challenges still faced by nonlinear meta-optics and point out some potential directions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic thickness, tunable light-matter interaction, and significant nonlinear susceptibility are emerging as potential candidates for new-generation optoelectronic devices. In this review, we briefly cover the recent research development of typical nonlinear optic (NLO) processes including second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG), as well as two-photon photoluminescence (2PPL) of 2D materials. Nonlinear light-matter interaction in atomically thin 2D materials is important for both fundamental research and future optoelectronic devices. The NLO performance of 2D materials can be greatly modulated with methods such as carrier injection tuning, strain tuning, artificially stacking, as well as plasmonic resonant enhancement. This review will discuss various nonlinear optical processes and corresponding tuning methods and propose its potential NLO application of 2D materials.

Abstract:By incorporating functionality from both inorganic and organic components,hybrid organic-inorganic second-order nonlinear optical materials exhibit high nonlinear optics(NLO) efficiency,good thermal and temporal stability,and have drawn considerable attention due to their application in electro-optic modulations and laser second-order harmonic generation.In this article the strategies to improve their NLO performance and stability,and the recent research progress in the application of hybrid Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulators are reviewed.To optimize NLO performance and film fabrication,a promising method to improve the compatibility of the hybrid NLO materials via hyperbranched structure is suggested.

Abstract:Abstract Tailored nanostructures provide at-will control over the properties of light, with applications in imaging and spectroscopy. Active photonics can further open new avenues in remote monitoring, virtual or augmented reality and time-resolved sensing. Nanomaterials with χ (2) nonlinearities achieve highest switching speeds. Current demonstrations typically require a trade-off: they either rely on traditional χ (2) materials, which have low non-linearities, or on application-specific quantum well heterostructures that exhibit a high χ (2) in a narrow band. Here, we show that a thin film of organic electro-optic molecules JRD1 in polymethylmethacrylate combines desired merits for active free-space optics: broadband record-high nonlinearity (10-100 times higher than traditional materials at wavelengths 1100-1600 nm), a custom-tailored nonlinear tensor at the nanoscale, and engineered optical and electronic responses. We demonstrate a tuning of optical resonances by Δ λ = 11 nm at DC voltages and a modulation of the transmitted intensity up to 40%, at speeds up to 50 MHz. We realize 2 × 2 single- and 1 × 5 multi-color spatial light modulators. We demonstrate their potential for imaging and remote sensing. The compatibility with compact laser diodes, the achieved millimeter size and the low power consumption are further key features for laser ranging or reconfigurable optics.

Abstract:Liquid crystals materials form a special class of nonlinear optical materials. They are generally composed of highly nonlinear and anisotropie molecules, and possess a number of structurally different fluid phases in a readily accessible temperature range [1]. The optical properties of such media are easily modified by external perturbations because of the high molecular anisotropy, low viscosity of molecular motion, and strong correlation between molecules. The fact that even a weak laser field is strong enough to cause a significant change in the optical properties makes liquid crystals most unusual as nonlinear optical materials. Many nonlinear optical effects, including a few highly nonlinear ones, can be easily observed in thin films of such materials [2]. In this paper, we shall focus our discussion on the nonlinear optical properties of liquid crystals.

Abstract:<p>The nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are playing a crucial role in almost all aspects of photonics including imaging frequency, manipulation, photon generation, transmission and detection. The nonlinear optics aims to investigate light response in NLO media, in which the NLO response is normally weak and low energy efficient. A comprehensive summary, discussion, and correlation of the light–matter interaction in the 2D nano‐platform, like graphene and TMDCs, would be inspirational and timely needed. In this contribution, a broad overview and discussion about recent experimental evolution regarding the NLO response and its corresponding applications in various 2D materials are presented. A wide material library including graphene, transition metal dichalcogenides, black phosphorus, MXenes, semimetals, polymer materials, and hybrid structures (0D, 1D, 3D) are discussed. In this review, the qualitative description of NLO is firstly illustrated, followed by various fundamental NLO processes being highlighted. Fundamental limits of nonlinear optics and some of NLO applications are prospected. It is hoped that this comprehensive review will shed a light on the development of nonlinear optics with 2D materials to be applied in the field of photonics and optoelectronics.</p>
