Abstract:Carbon nanoscrolls (CNSs) are one of the carbon-based nanomaterials similar to carbon nanotubes (CNTs) but are not widely studied in spite of their great potential applications. Their practical applications are hindered by the challenging fabrication of the CNSs. A physical approach has been proposed recently to fabricate the CNS by rolling up a monolayer graphene nanoribbon (GNR) around a CNT driven by the interaction energy between them. In this study, we perform extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate the various factors that impact the formation of the CNS from GNR. Our simulation results show that the formation of the CNS is sensitive to the length of the CNT and temperature. When the GNR is functionalized with hydrogen, the formation of the CNS is determined by the density and distribution of the hydrogen atoms. Graphyne, the allotrope of graphene, is inferior to graphene in the formation of the CNS due to the weaker bonds and the associated smaller atom density. The mechanism behind the rolling of GNR into CNS lies in the balance between the GNR–CNT van der Waals (vdW) interactions and the strain energy of GNR. The present work reveals new important insights and provides useful guidelines for the fabrication of the CNS.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are promising building blocks for high-performance electronics due to their high electron mobility and dimensionality-induced bandgap. Despite many past efforts, direct synthesis of GNRs with controlled dimensions and scalability remains challenging. Here we report the scalable synthesis of GNRs using electrospun polymer nanofiber templates. Palladium-incorporated poly(4-vinylphenol) nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning with controlled diameter and orientation. Highly graphitized GNRs as narrow as 10 nm were then synthesized from these templates by chemical vapor deposition. A transport gap can be observed in 30 nm-wide GNRs, enabling them to function as field-effect transistors at room temperature. Our results represent the first success on the scalable synthesis of highly graphitized GNRs from polymer templates. Furthermore, the generality of this method allows various polymers to be explored, which will lead to understanding of growth mechanism and rational control over crystallinity, feature size and bandgap to enable a new pathway for graphene electronics.

Abstract:The successful fabrication of single layer graphene has greatly stimulated the progress of the research on graphene. In this article, focusing on the basic electronic and transport properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs), we review the recent progress of experimental fabrication of GNRs, the theoretical and experimental investigations of physical properties, and device applications of GNRs. We also briefly discuss the research efforts on the spin polarization of GNRs in relation to the edge states.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are narrow strips of graphene with widths ranging from a few nanometers to a few tens of nanometers. GNRs possess most of the excellent properties of graphene, while also exhibiting unique physical characteristics not found in graphene, such as an adjustable band gap and spin-polarized edge states. These properties make GNRs an appealing candidate for carbon-based electronics. In this review, we begin by introducing the edge geometry and electronic bands of GNRs. We then discuss various methods for fabricating GNRs and analyze the characteristics of each method. Subsequently, the performance of GNR field-effect transistor devices obtained from a few representative GNR fabrication methods is discussed and compared. We also investigate the use of GNRs as quantum dots and spintronic devices. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of GNRs as a quantum material for next-generation electronics and spintronics are explored and proposed.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) exhibit a series of essential electronic properties, especially in establishing tunable bandgaps. The bandgaps are determined by structural features of GNRs, including orientation, width, backbone/edge structure, heteroatom doping, and overall quality. These parameters affect the electronic properties of the GNRs to a large extent. To better incorporate GNRs into nanoscale electronic devices, obtaining high-quality GNRs with precisely defined bandgaps is a significant necessity. To date, different preparation techniques have offered a vast range of available materials for fabricating GNRs, where hydrocarbon gases and halogen-containing aromatic molecular precursors are the most important candidates. Therefore, it is fundamental to categorize the existing techniques in preparation, bandgap modulation, application of GNRs, and obtaining systematic knowledge on how to take advantage of this frontier material. Herein, overall understandings on the synthesis strategies and bandgap engineering tactics related to GNRs are presented in detail. Various techniques of top-down approaches and bottom-up syntheses, the origin of GNRs' bandgap from quantum confinement effect, a diversity of bandgap engineering tools, and the applications of GNR-based devices are comprehensively reviewed with critical comparisons. In addition, the remaining challenges and promising opportunities are listed to catalyze upcoming findings pushing forward the ultimate applications of GNRs.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons: a slice of the action Graphene, made up of graphite sheets a single atom thick, is an electronic conductor. However thin strips of the material, called graphite nanoribbons or GNRs, can express different electronic properties depending on their width. This tunability could lead them to overtake nanotubes for some applications. Producing bulk quantities of ribbons in a scalable manner has been a challenge until now, but it is required for using them in electronics applications. A team from Stanford University team now report an approach to reliably produce sub-10-nm graphene nanoribbons by partial encapsulation of carbon nanotubes in a polymer. A longitudinal strip of the nanotube remains exposed and can be cut by plasma etching, resulting in the unzipping of the nanotube when the polymer is removed, and formation of a thin strip of graphene. The potential of the material was demonstrated by using it to produce effective field-effect transistors.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate, by molecular dynamics simulations, the mechanical properties of a new carbon nanostructure, termed a graphene nanochain, constructed by sewing up pristine or twisted graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and interlocking the obtained nanorings. The obtained tensile strength of defect-free nanochain is a little lower than that of pristine GNRs and the fracture point is earlier than that of the GNRs. The effects of length, width and twist angle of the constituent GNRs on the mechanical performance are analyzed. Furthermore, defect effect is investigated and in some high defect coverage cases, an interesting mechanical strengthening-like behavior is observed. This structure supports the concept of long-cable manufacturing and advanced material design can be achieved by integration of nanochain with other nanocomposites. The technology used to construct the nanochain is experimentally feasible, inspired by the recent demonstrations of atomically precise fabrications of GNRs with complex structures [Phys. Rev. Lett., 2009, 102, 205501; Nano Lett., 2010, 10, 4328; Nature, 2010, 466, 470].

Abstract:An effective, large-scale synthesis strategy for producing graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with a nearly 100% yield has been proposed using a stepwise, solution-based, lengthwise unzipping carbon nanotube (CNT) method. Detailed Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis suggest that GNRs with tunable density of oxygen-containing functional groups on the GNR surfaces can be synthesized by adjusting the oxidant concentration during the CNT unzipping. The electrochemical characterization reveals that the as-produced GNRs with 42.91 atomic percent (atom %) oxygen-containing functional groups deliver a capacity of 437 mAh g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.33C, while the as-produced GNRs with higher oxygen-containing functional groups only present a capacity of 225 mAh g(-1). On the basis of the electrochemical assessment and XPS analysis, the funtionals groups (epoxy-, carbonyl-, and carboxyl groups) in GNRs could be the effective contributor for the high-performance Li-ion batteries with appropriate adjustment.
Rational Fabrication of Graphene Nanoribbons Using a Nanowire Etch Mask

Abstract:We report a rational approach to fabricate graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with sub-10 nm width by employing chemically synthesized nanowires as the physical protection mask in oxygen plasma etch. Atomic force microscopy study shows that the patterns of the resulted nanoribbons replicate exactly those of mask nanowires so that ribbons or branched or crossed graphene nanostructures can be produced. Our study shows a linear scaling relation between the resulted GNR widths and mask nanowire diameters with variable slopes for different etching times. GNRs with controllable widths down to 6 nm have been demonstrated. We have fabricated GNR field effect transistors (FETs) with nanoribbons directly connected to bulk graphene electrodes. Electrical measurements on an 8 nm GNR-FET show room temperature transistor behavior with an on/off ratio around 160, indicating appreciable band gaps arise due to lateral confinement. We find the on/off ratio in the log scale inversely scales with ribbon width. This approach opens a new avenue to graphene nanoribbons and other graphene nanostructures in the deep nanometer regime without sophisticated lithography. It thus opens exciting new opportunities for graphene nanodevice engineering.
Efficient Synthesis of Graphene Nanoribbons Sonochemically Cut from Graphene Sheets

Abstract:We report a facile approach to synthesize narrow and long graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) by sonochemically cutting chemically derived graphene sheets (GSs). The yield of GNRs can reach ∼5 wt% of the starting GSs. The resulting GNRs are several micrometers in length, with ∼75% being single-layer, and ∼40% being narrower than 20 nm in width. A chemical tailoring mechanism involving oxygen-unzipping of GSs under sonochemical conditions is proposed on the basis of experimental observations and previously reported theoretical calculations; it is suggested that the formation and distribution of line faults on graphite oxide and GSs play crucial roles in the formation of GNRs. These results open up the possibilities of the large-scale synthesis and various technological applications of GNRs.

Abstract:As cut-outs from a graphene sheet, nanographenes (NGs) and graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are ideal cases with which to connect the world of molecules with that of bulk carbon materials. While various top-down approaches have been developed to produce such nanostructures in high yields, in the present perspective, precision structural control is emphasized for the length, width, and edge structures of NGs and GNRs achieved by modern solution and on-surface syntheses. Their structural possibilities have been further extended from "flatland" to the three-dimensional world, where chirality and handedness are the jewels in the crown. In addition to properties exhibited at the molecular level, self-assembly and thin-film structures cannot be neglected, which emphasizes the importance of processing techniques. With the rich toolkit of chemistry in hand, NGs and GNRs can be endowed with versatile properties and functions ranging from stimulated emission to spintronics and from bioimaging to energy storage, thus demonstrating their multitalents in present and future materials science.

Facile Synthesis of High Quality Graphene Nanoribbons

Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons have attracted attention for their novel electronic and spin transport properties1-6, and because nanoribbons less than 10 nm wide have a band gap that can be used to make field effect transistors. However, producing nanoribbons of very high quality, or in high volumes, remains a challenge. Here, we show that pristine few-layer nanoribbons can be produced by unzipping mildly gas-phase oxidized multiwalled carbon nanotube using mechanical sonication in an organic solvent. The nanoribbons exhibit very high quality, with smooth edges (as seen by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy), low ratios of disorder to graphitic Raman bands, and the highest electrical conductance and mobility reported to date (up to 5e2/h and 1500 cm2/Vs for ribbons 10-20 nm in width). Further, at low temperature, the nanoribbons exhibit phase coherent transport and Fabry-Perot interference, suggesting minimal defects and edge roughness. The yield of nanoribbons was ~2% of the starting raw nanotube soot material, which was significantly higher than previous methods capable of producing high quality narrow nanoribbons1. The relatively high yield synthesis of pristine graphene nanoribbons will make these materials easily accessible for a wide range of fundamental and practical applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONR) are prepared by the top-down oxidative unzipping of carbon nanotubes. The unique one-dimensional morphology and the abundant functional groups of GONR distinguish it from other graphene-based carbon materials with increased solvent dispersibility and self-assembly behavior. These features have been exploited throughout the literature for various applications, including energy storage materials, sensors, catalysts, fillers for composites, and separation membranes. However, despite its drastically different chemical and physical properties, GONRs are often only discussed in the sub-context of graphene nanoribbons. This Perspective highlights GONRs specifically, focusing on their chemical properties and structuring behaviors, which can be manipulated to yield appealing structures for target applications. These characteristics constitute significant importance in scalable applications. The final section of this Perspective catalogs a comprehensive summary of recent GONR developments and additional perspectives for future research.

Abstract:The absence of dangling bonds in close-edged graphene nanoribbons (CEGNRs) confers upon them a series of fascinating properties, especially when compared with cylindrical carbon nanotubes and open-edged GNRs. Here, the configuration of CEGNRs is described, followed by the structure-related properties, including mechanical, thermal, electrical, optical, and magnetic properties. Based on the unique structures and extraordinary properties, their potential applications in a variety of fields, such as field-effect transistors, energy suppliers, nanoactuators, and fibers, are discussed. Remarkably, the strategies applied for generating CEGNRs, mainly from the collapse of carbon nanotubes and graphene tubes, are depicted in detail. Finally, the prospects in the research area of CEGNRs are proposed.

Abstract:Graphene fibers (GFs), assembled from graphene-based building blocks, have received considerable attention both from academia and industry due to their intriguing features of high specific surface area, lightweight, easy functionalization, excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. Herein, we have summarized current research status of GFs in terms of their latest fabrication techniques, characterization methods and reduction processes. Wet and dry spinning, dimension-confined hydrothermal strategy, electrophoretic self-assembly, and film conversion fabrication techniques are mainly discussed to optimize the best fabrication conditions. Moreover, various characterization techniques and reduction processes of GFs are also elaborated in detail. Finally, a perspective of the future development and applications of GFs have been given a separate portion in this review.

Abstract:Along with carbon nanotubes and other low-dimensional materials, graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are an active area of research and are candidates for the next generation of semiconductors with unparalleled electrical performance. An effective method was demonstrated to fabricate aligned GNR arrays of various lengths and densities by etching the wrinkle arrays that we created by substrate engineering. The width of the GNR could be 10 nm, and density of the GNR array was highly tailorable with a maximum average of 2.5 ribbons/μm, which could form in any position on the substrate. We tailored the length of the array to be within the 200–800 nm range by adjusting the parameters of the substrate structure. The as-prepared GNRs could be organized in both single and array manners, which shows an on/off ratio of >10 indicated by an open band gap of graphene. This result provides a route to fabricate aligned GNR arrays conveniently, efficiently, and with high controllability and allows for large-scale integration of GNRs into nanoelectronics or optoelectronics.

Abstract:Chemical graphene nanoribbons (CGNRs), a new type of quantum-confinement graphene nanostructure with tunable electrical conduction channels and bandgaps, are fabricated by chemically narrowing the conduction channels of the graphene based on an edge-selective covalent reaction. Abstract:Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are a family of one-dimensional (1D) materials with a graphitic lattice structure. GNRs possess high mobility and current-carrying capability, sizeable bandgap and versatile electronic properties, which make them promising candidates for quantum electronic applications. In the past 5 years, progress has been made towards atomically precise bottom-up synthesis of GNRs and heterojunctions that provide an ideal platform for functional molecular devices, as well as successful production of semiconducting GNR arrays on insulating substrates potentially useful for large-scale digital circuits. With further development, GNRs can be envisioned as a competitive candidate material in future quantum information sciences. In this Perspective, we discuss recent progress in GNR research and identify key challenges and new directions likely to develop in the near future.
