Abstract:The polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been developed as a versatile technique to prepare the block copolymer-based nano-objects. Compared with the traditional block copolymer-based self-assembly technology, the PISA technology is featured with a polymerization process and a simultaneous self-assembly process, as well as with well-controlled morphologies and high solid content (up to 50 wt%). These advantages have facilitated the large-scale production and application of the nano-objects. Based on the modification of various "living"/controlled polymerization mechanisms and the optimization of various formulations, the PISA technology has been well developed over the past decade. Correspondingly, the application of the PISA technology is also widely used. Up to now, several reviews on the morphology evolution of PISA technology have been presented. However, a comprehensive summary on the application of PISA technique is still needed. In this review, following with a brief introduction on the fundamental principle and the status of PISA technology, the application of PISA in nanocomposite materials, biomedical materials, batteries, functional coatings, Pickering emulsifiers, nanostructured membranes, hydrogels, luminescent materials, and other fields will be focused and summarized. This summary is hoped to depict a comprehensive outline of PISA technology in recent years and to prompt the development of the self-assembly technology in interdisciplinary field. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has become widely recognized as a robust and efficient route to produce nanostructured systems toward functionally superior materials. Herein, by combining mesoscale simulations and micromechanical modeling, we report the structural control over the interfacial organization and the resulted micro mechanical behaviors of novel nanocomposites designed based on the PISA of initiator-modified Janus nanoparticles in diblock copolymers. Our simulations demonstrate that the off center distribution of these functionalized Janus nanoparticles with respect to phase interface can be precisely regulated by tuning the reaction kinetics and the concentration of monomers dispersed in polymer microdomains. Theoretical calculation reveals that such polymerization-induced interfacial self assembly of Janus nanoparticles is fundamentally attributed to a unique entropy effect mediated by the reaction. The diffusion dynamics of monomers in the entanglement mesh of the diblock copolymers is also examined to evaluate the efficiency of the structural control governed by polymerization in the polymer matrix. Furthermore, the combination of techniques allows us to determine how the interfacial polymerization of Janus nanoparticles influences the micromechanical behaviors, such as the elastic fields, modulus, and failure, fracture behaviors of the nanocomposites. The findings have a bearing on enriching our understanding on the thermodynamic nature of polymer nanocomposites and suggest design guidelines for creating block copolymer-based functional materials of programmable interfacial nanostructures correlated with controlled mechanical performance.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a powerful and versatile technique for producing colloidal dispersions of block copolymer particles with desired morphologies. Currently, PISA can be carried out in various media, over a wide range of temperatures, and using different mechanisms. This method enables the production of biodegradable objects and particles with various functionalities and stimuli sensitivity. Consequently, PISA offers a broad spectrum of potential commercial applications. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current state of rational synthesis of block copolymer particles with diverse morphologies using various PISA techniques and mechanisms. The discussion begins with an examination of the main thermodynamic, kinetic, and structural aspects of block copolymer micellization, followed by an exploration of the key principles of PISA in the formation of gradient and block copolymers. The review also delves into the main mechanisms of PISA implementation and the principles governing particle morphology. Finally, the potential future developments in PISA are considered.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) was developed to prepare assemblies of conjugated block copoly(phenylacetylene)s for the first time. The living dispersion polymerization of (R/S)-4-(1-phenethylbamoyl)phenylacetylene (rmAN/smAN) can be achieved in the presence of poly(phenylacetylene) (PPA) macro-initiators. The assemblies prepared from the copolymers PPA(m)-b-PrmAN(n) with the short core-forming PrmAN blocks tended to form vesicles in tetrahydrofuran because of the rigid conformation of the block copolymers. As the length of PrmAN blocks increased, the assemblies preferred to form lamellae, and then, the lamellae twisted to form helical ribbons. The helicity of copolymers could transfer to the helical assemblies accurately. This work not only expanded applications of PISA into living coordination polymerization but also enhanced the efficiency of the assembly preparation of rigid conjugated block copoly(phenylacetylene)s.

Abstract:We report the combination of the living anionic polymerization (LAP) mechanism with the polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) process, and the all-styrenic diblock copolymer poly(p-tert-butylstyrene)-b-polystyrene (PtBS-b-PS) based LAP PISA. Firstly, the practicability and controllability of the LAP PISA were successfully confirmed by the well-controlled molecular weight (MW) and narrow molecular weight distribution (M-w/M-n < 1.10). Subsequently, the effect of key factors, including the MWs of PtBS and PS segments, targeted MW ratio M-n,M-PS/M-n,M-PtBS, and weight solids content, on the morphological evolution was investigated, and the phase diagram was finally presented.

Abstract:Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) enables the simultaneous growth and self‐assembly of block copolymers in one pot and therefore has developed into a high‐efficiency platform for the preparation of polymer assemblies with high concentration and excellent reproducibility. During the past decade, the driving force of PISA has extended from hydrophobic interactions to other supramolecular interactions, which has greatly innovated the design of PISA, enlarged the monomer/solvent toolkit, and endowed the polymer assemblies with intrinsic dynamicity and responsiveness. To unravel the important role of driving forces in the formation of polymeric assemblies, this review summarized the recent development of PISA from the perspective of driving forces. Motivated by this goal, here we give a brief overview of the basic principles of PISA and systematically discuss the various driving forces in the PISA system, including hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, and π‐π interactions. Furthermore, PISA systems that are driven and regulated by crystallization or liquid crystalline ordering were also highlighted.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) is a robust strategy for the syntheses of block copolymer nano-objects with various morphologies. Although PISA has been extensively studied, the use of cyclic macromolecular chain transfer agents (macroCTAs) as the hydrophilic block has not been reported. We explored the effects of macroCTA topo-logy on the polymerization kinetics and morphologies of block copolymer assemblies during reversible addition-fragment-ation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization. To this end, linear and cyclic poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) with 4-(4-cyanopentanoic acid) dithiobenzoate (CPADB) groups were synthesized and used as CTAs to mediate the RAFT poly-merization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) and 2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorostyrene (PFSt) under PISA formulation. Interestingly, the nucleation period of the linear PEO is slightly shorter than that of its cyclic analog, and the cyclic hydrophilic segment leads to a delayed morphological transition during PISA.

Abstract:Drug delivery systems (DDS) based on functionalized polymeric nanoparticles have attracted considerable attention. Although great advances have been reported in the past decades, the fabrication efficiency and reproducibility of polymeric nanoparticles are barely satisfactory due to the intrinsic limitations of the traditional self-assembly method, which severely prevent further applications of the intelligent DDS. In the last decade, a new self-assembly method, which is usually called polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), has become a powerful strategy for the fabrication of the polymeric nanoparticles with bespoke morphology. The PISA strategy efficiently simplifies the fabrication of polymeric nanoparticles (combination of the polymerization and self-assembly in one pot) and allows the fabrication of polymeric nanoparticles at a relatively high concentration (up to 50 wt%), making it realistic for large-scale production of polymeric nanoparticles. In this review, the developments of PISA-based polymeric nanoparticles for drug delivery are discussed.

Abstract:The functionalization and application of nano-objects generated using a polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA) procedure is becoming a focus in recent years. In this contribution, using ethanol as solvent, poly(oligo(ethylene oxide) methyl ether methacrylate) (POEOMA) as macro-initiator/stabilizer, and 2-(perfluorohexyl)ethyl methacrylate (PFHEMA) and glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) as comonomers, the initiators for continuous activator regeneration atom transfer radical polymerization (ICAR ATRP)-based PISA is realized. The lower GMA content system tends to form spheres with large diameters and heavy contrast, while the lower PFHEMA content system tends to form the spheres or short worms with small diameters. However, the system with further increased GMA content results in the failed ICAR ATRP PISA procedure with the formation of precipitates by the cross-linking reaction between pendant epoxy groups. Furthermore, using the efficient reaction between the epoxy group on GMA and thiol group on mercapto-succinic acid agent, the carboxyl groups can be introduced into the inner cavity of the nano-objects and used for incorporation with the Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions, and the organic-inorganic nanoparticles Fe3O4@POEOMA are finally prepared in the presence of a reductant.

Abstract:Abstract Polymerization induced self-assembly (PISA) has a high solid content, simple operating steps, and can generally achieve high conversion to monomers in a short time, which has been widely used in the preparation and adjusting to morphologies of polymer micelles self-assembly. In this article, the preparation and applications of the polymeric micelle synthesized by PISA were reviewed. The particle morphology can be adjusted by a variety of active polymerizations with different initiation mechanisms in the preparation of polymer micelles. Among them, free radical active polymerization is more practical. The reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) were highlighted. Additionally, different shapes such as spheres, worms, and vesicles can be obtained by RAFT in the preparation of nano-objects fields. Researchers construct the phase diagram to get the pure phase for applications. As one form produced by PISA, polymeric micelles are usually artificial nanoreactors for a series of organic and inorganic catalysis and can be used as drug delivery and target agents. Due to the increase in the ultimate tensile strength, RAFT is an optimal technique to produce thermoplastic elastomers.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) combines synthesis and self-assembly of artificial polymers in one-pot, which brings us one step closer to emulating biosynthesis. However, the reported PISA formulations primarily focus on developing nano-objects with new chemical compositions and rarely on structural regulation of polymers with specific components. Herein, sequence structure controllable polymerization-induced self-assembly (SCPISA) is reported by using 7-(2-methacryloyloxyethoxy)-4-methylcoumarin (CMA) as a monomer. During the copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and CMA, controlled incorporation of CMA units into the polymer chains can be realized by programmable light/heat changes. SCPISA-based P(HEMA- co -CMA) copolymers with the same composition but different sequence structures generate a range of assemblies. Moreover, the morphologies of the resultant nano-objects can also be controlled by regulating the feed molar ratio of CMA and HEMA, which is similar to the conventional PISA, but the synthesis procedure is obviously simplified in SCPISA. The versatility of the methodology is further demonstrated by the fabrication of different functional nano-objects with sequence structure-dependent morphologies in SCPISA systems with different functional monomers.

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has attracted growing interest as facile fabrication process of polymer-based nanomaterials. However, PISA of acrylonitrile (AN) by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has remained an outstanding challenge due to the high activity of AN and poor solubility of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) in AN monomer. Here the application of PISA by using an initiators for continuous activator regeneration (ICAR) ATRP for the synthesis of PAN-based nano-objects is demonstrated. A highly active ATRP macroinitiator, methoxy-poly(ethylene oxide) 2-bromo-2-phenylacetate (mPEO-BPA) was synthesized by esterification and used also as a stabilizer. The molecular weight of the macroinitiator was found to determine the structure of self-assembled nano-objects. The high molecular macroinitiator (mPEO113-BPA) formed nano-objects with spherical or worm-like morphology, while the lower molecular weight analogue (mPEO45-BPA) resulted in precipitation in most cases due to insufficient stabilization of the nano-objects.

Abstract:The self-assembly of block copolymers attracts wide interest due to many potential applications of the polymeric aggregates. Great effort has been made to realize the convenient fabrication of abundant polymeric materials with well-defined nanostructures. This review introduces the development of the in situ preparation of block copolymer aggregates by heterogeneous polymerization. Great emphasis is put on discussing the formation mechanism of aggregates with different morphologies. Some important factors that influence the morphologies are illustrated when different polymerization methods are employed. By demonstrating some recent advances and existing problems in this area, more attention and effort should be paid to this field to facilitate its further progress.

Abstract:Almost all of polymeric nanostructures are now prepared by a classical post-self-assembly strategy. An ambitious target is to quest new polymer in situ self-assembly ways. Here we pose a light-initiated in situ self-assembly method, named LISA, which can de novo form various nanostructures through orthogonal photoligation from multiple homopolymers. Tuning the initial componential or light parameter, one can predict and govern the systematic morphological evolution. This method circumvents tedious synthesis and solution-processing procedures of block copolymers in post-self-assembly strategy and allows the preparation of ordered assemblies from simple homopolymers in one-pot photoreaction. We anticipate that this photocontrolled in situ self-assembly strategy would provide a new vision for facile construction of high-ordered nanostructures starting from homopolymers

Abstract:<p>In the recent decade, PISA (polymerization-induced self-assembly) has emerged to be a quite popular technique for preparing a variety of nanoassembly structures in the selective solvent. As a special technique of PISA, PICA (polymerization-induced cooperative assembly) is believed to be able to produce more variable nanostructures and its regulation ways seem even flexible. The process of PICA is studied systematically with the simulation method for discovering possible regulation ways of the morphologies. We find that the existence of solvophobic homopolymers yields a "chain growth retarding effect", which effectively slows down the reaction kinetics of the polymerization. Besides of proving the transition from lower-order morphologies to higher-order morphologies as reported in experiments, we also find the novel transition from higher-order morphologies to lower-order morphologies, as a result of the self-adaptation behavior of the system. For the first time, we demonstrate that this behavior is able to be well described as a kind of inverse flip-flop process of vesicle structures to the thermodynamically stable micelle structure. We also discover that the obvious contrast of length between the solvophilic macro-chain transfer agents and solvophobic blocks is beneficial to the emergence of plentiful kinds of structures. This study is helpful for understanding the crucial factors on precisely regulating the morphologies in PICA, as well as guiding the way to improve the experimental technologies.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Janus Polymerization: A Novel Approach towards Topology Design

Abstract:Janus polymerization combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain involving a living/controlled chain-growth polymerization and a self-triggered stepwise polycondensation, which provides a facile way to synthesize novel polymers with sophisticated topologies in one step directly from monomers. Di-/Multi-block copolymers, branch polymers, mikto-arm star copolymers and cylindrical polymer brushes are synthesized using rare earth triflates catalysts assisted by various epoxy initiators owing to their specific position at the middle of the chain. This work reviews recent progress on Janus polymerization in our group. Specifically, the characteristic of rare earth metal catalysts and mechanism of Janus polymerization are discussed in detail where tripedal crows are employed to illustrate the mechanism. New methodologies for the construction of topological polymers are introduced, together with the unique and prominent properties, such as thermoplastic properties, self-assembly and self-healing behaviors and the corresponding applications in self-sealing films for plants and electrostatic spinning. A new Janus system is put forward which affords a facile synthetic method for functional polyesters by incorporating a modifiable monomer 3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxacyclobutane. Finally, the development of Janus polymerization including new catalytic systems and monomers is also prospected. The concept of Janus polymerization makes significant breakthroughs into traditional cognitions about incompatible cationic and anionic polymerization mechanisms in one system which motivates the power in the catalysis and synthesis of polymer chemistry.
Smartphone-Enabled Platform for Direct Recognition of the Morphology of Copolymer Nano-Objects During Polymerization-Induced Self-Assembly

Abstract:Polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA) has been demonstrated as a robust method for the preparation of polymeric nanoparticles with various morphologies in high solid content. Developing efficient methods for the direct recognition of the morphologies of copolymer nanoparticles during PISA in a low-cost and simple manner is of practical significance. Herein, we proposed a fluorescent chroma method that enabled the direct recognition of the morphologies of copolymer nano-objects in the PISA process. Methacrylate monomer bearing pyrene fluorophore (PyAMA) with a broad emission region was first synthesized, which exhibited blue monomeric fluorescence and produced green excimer emission when stacked together in a dimer state. PyAMA was then used as a comonomer during the RAFT dispersion polymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) using 4-cyano-4-(2-phenylethanesulfanyl-thiocarbonyl)sulfanylpentanoic acid (PETTC) capped poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PETTC) as a macro-molecular chain transfer agent (macroCTA). Accompanying with the morphological transformation from micelles to nanowires to vesicles, the fluorescent color of the copolymer nanoparticles underwent the variation from blue to cyan to green due to the increased emission ratio of pyrene excimer to monomer (Iexcimer/Imonomer), and the direct observation of the nanostructural changes during PISA by naked eyes was realized. Furthermore, an easy-to-use smartphone program was elaborately designed to simplify the morphological recognition based on the fluorescent colors for different morphologies. This strategy provides a facile platform to monitor the morphological evolutions during PISA and realizes the preassessment of the morphologies of PISA-generated nanoparticles.

Abstract:Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) was conducted in a non‐polar medium (n‐dodecane) via reversible complexation‐mediated polymerization (RCMP). Stearyl methacrylate (SMA) was used to synthesize a macroinitiator, and subsequent block polymerization of benzyl methacrylate (BzMA) from the macroinitiator in n‐dodecane afforded a PSMA–PBzMA block copolymer, where PSMA is poly(stearyl methacrylate) and PBzMA is poly(benzyl methacrylate). Because PSMA is soluble but PBzMA is insoluble in n‐dodecane, the block copolymer formed a self‐assembly during the block polymerization (PISA). Spherical micelles, worms, and vesicles were obtained, depending on the degrees of polymerization of PSMA and PBzMA. "One‐pot" PISA was also attained; namely, BzMA was directly added to the reaction mixture of the macroinitiator synthesis, and PISA was conducted in the same pot without purification of the macroinitiator. The spherical micelle and vesicle structures were also fixed using a crosslinkable monomer during PISA. RCMP‐PISA is highly attractive as it is odourless and metal‐free. The "one‐pot" synthesis does not require the purification of the macroinitiator. RCMP‐PISA can provide a practical approach to synthesize self‐assemblies in non‐polar media.
