Abstract:Efficient and clean energy storage and conversion devices are essential for future social development. However, the slow oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) considerably limit the energy efficiency and operating life of metal-air batteries, fuel cells and water splitting devices. Preparing inexpensive, efficient, stable, and environment friendly catalysts for ORR and OER is crucial for promoting the commercial application of these energy conversion devices. Herein, the recent advances in transition metal-decorated and heteroatom-doped porous carbon-based catalysts for ORR and OER and their structure-activity relation are analyzed. Finally, theoretical calculations are discussed to summarize the effects of transition metal decoration and heteroatom doping on the electrochemical properties of carbon-based materials, and the challenges and opportunities in this field are proposed.

Abstract:Non-precious metal catalysts should be studied to substitute precious Pt catalysts. Recent developments of non-precious-metal catalysts (combined with the achievements of our group) are summarized in this paper. The main issues that exist in the transition metal oxides, metal-nitrogen-carbon material, and heteroatom-doped carbon material are highlighted from the aspects of the synthetic methods and mechanisms. The research tendency and perspective of these non-precious metal catalysts are provided.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the most important reactions in life processes and energy conversion systems. To alleviate global warming and the energy crisis, the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for the ORR for application in energy conversion and storage devices such as metal-air batteries and fuel cells is highly desirable. Inspired by the biological oxygen activation/reduction process associated with heme- and multicopper-containing metalloenzymes, iron and copper-based transition-metal complexes have been extensively explored as ORR electrocatalysts. Herein, an outline into recent progress on non-precious-metal electrocatalysts for the ORR is provided; these electrocatalysts do not require pyrolysis treatment, which is regarded as desirable from the viewpoint of bioinspired molecular catalyst design, focusing on iron/cobalt macrocycles (porphyrins, phthalocyanines, and corroles) and copper complexes in which the ORR activity is tuned by ligand variation/substitution, the method of catalyst immobilization, and the underlying supporting materials. Current challenges and exciting imminent developments in bioinspired ORR electrocatalysts are summarized and proposed.

Abstract:<p>Exploiting advanced electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of vital importance for the development of metal-air batteries, fuel cells and water electrolyzers. Rational design and fabrication of electrocatalysts with high specific areas, abundant expose active sites, and porous structures is an effective approach to improve the electrocatalytic performances. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous crystalline materials, which possess large surface areas, high porosities, componential and structural diversity, has shown great potential as efficient OER electrocatalysts. This review focus on the recent progress of fabrication and utilization of transition metal (e.g., Fe, Co, and Ni) based MOF materials including pristine MOFs, MOF composites and their derivatives for OER. A variety of typical strategies, including synthetic designs, compositional, and structural modifications for activity improvement of the MOF-based materials in the OER are outlined and discussed. Based on the previous achievements, the current state of the art and the perspectives for the future development of the field are summarized.</p>

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has an important influence in the development of green and sustainable energy, and it is urgent to find the effective electrocatalysts to reduce their overpotential. MOFs materials have adjustable pore structure and polymetallic sites. Unsaturated metal sites are located on the material surface, which can be used as catalytic activity centers. However, intrinsic activity hinders the application in water splitting, and the necessary methods for the production of highly active catalytic materials are vulcanization and oxidation of the materials. Catalytic materials have been explored for monometallic, bimetallic, and trimetallic MOFs. Carbon-coated and doped MOF catalysts with core-shell structural features have been further investigated. MOF-based materials are widely used as OER electrocatalysts due to their inherent porous structure and excellent tunability. The experimental results and theories obtained have been compared through DFT calculation, and it is judged that the material obtained is a catalyst with excellent OER activity. Meanwhile combined with experimental and theoretical research, the thorough comprehension of the functional active site and underlying mechanisms for enhancing OER are emphatically emphasized. Through the overall comparison of these MOFs materials, it can be found that bimetallic materials have higher electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution than monometallic materials. MOFs materials derived from core-shell structure or obtained by carbon coating and doping not only have the stable and good OER activity, but also the shell formed by them can prevent further dissolution of metal cores. More importantly, it is found that only metal centers with good contact with the electrolyte are the electrochemically active. The intrinsic activity of MOF on OER can be effectively improved by synergistic interaction between polymetallic active sites. In this case, it can offer a promising concept for researching high-performance electrocatalysts based on MOF for OER. It is conducive to the synthesis of high-ratio oxygen-vacancy MOF catalysts. In addition, through the comprehensive reference of such articles, most of them describe the MOF materials synthesized by one or two metals alone, and this article is a summary of MOF materials with good properties. The emergence of these materials is an opportunity for high-performance oxygen evolution materials, which can provide the possibility to replace the expensive catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the core electrode reaction in energy-related technologies, such as electrolytic water, electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction, rechargeable metal-air batteries, and renewable fuel cells. Development of well-stocked, cost-effective, and high-performance OER electrocatalysts is the key to the improvement of energy efficiency and the large-scale commercial implementation of these technologies. Multicomponent transition metal oxides and (oxy)hydroxides are the most promising OER catalysts due to their low cost, adjustable structure, high electrocatalytic activity, and outstanding durability. In this review, a brief overview about the mechanisms of OER is first offered, accompanied with the theory and calculation criteria. Then, the latest advances in the rational design of the related OER electrocatalysts and the modulation of the electronic structure of active sites are comprehensively summarized. Specifically, various strategies (including element doping, defect engineering, and fabrication of binderless catalysts) used to improve the OER performance are detailedly discussed, emphasizing the structure—function relationships. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on this promising field are proposed.

Abstract:Considering the urgent requirement for clean and sustainable energy, fuel cells and metal‐air batteries have emerged as promising energy storage and conversion devices to alleviate the worldwide energy challenges. The key step in accelerating the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics at the cathode is to develop cost‐effective and high‐efficiency non‐precious metal catalysts, which can be used to replace expensive Pt‐based catalysts. Recently, the transition metal and nitrogen co‐doped carbon (M‐Nx/C) materials with tailored morphology, tunable composition, and confined structure show great potential in both acidic and alkaline media. Herein, the mechanism of ORR is provided, followed by recent efforts to clarify the actual structures of active sites. Furthermore, we concentrate on the progress of optimizing the catalytic performance of M‐Nx/C catalysts by modulating nitrogen‐rich precursors and porous structure engineering. Here, we also outline and evaluate the remaining challenges and development prospects of M‐Nx/C catalysts.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), namely, so-called oxygen electrode reactions, are two fundamental half-cell reactions in the energy storage and conversion devices, e.g., zinc–air batteries and fuel cells. However, the oxygen electrode reactions suffer from sluggish kinetics, large overpotential and complicated reaction paths, and thus require efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Transition-metal-based layered double hydroxides (LDHs) and their derivatives have displayed excellent catalytic performance, suggesting a major contribution to accelerate electrochemical reactions. The rational regulation of electronic structure, defects, and coordination environment of active sites via various functionalized strategies, including tuning the chemical composition, structural architecture, and topotactic transformation process of LDHs precursors, has a great influence on the resulting electrocatalytic behavior. In addition, an in-depth understanding of the structural performance and chemical-composition-performance relationships of LDHs-based electrocatalysts can promote further rational design and optimization of high-performance electrocatalysts. Finally, prospects for the design of efficient and stable LDHs-based materials, for mass-production and large-scale application in practice, are discussed.

Abstract:Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) could be an ideal candidate for challenging energy conversion and storage technology. Usually, the crucial oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction are naturally lethargic and require efficient catalysts to kinetically boost the energy conversion processes to achieve the practicable ZABs application. Transition-metal/carbon hybrid catalysts show excellent potentials in electrocatalysis, and they have been developed into cost-effective and scalable oxygen electrocatalyst alternatives for expensive and scarcer noble metal ones in rechargeable ZABs. Herein we summarize recent achievements in transition metal/carbon hybrids for oxygen electrocatalysis. These catalysts mainly fall into two categories by the integrated metal/metal oxides nanoparticles and atomically dispersed transition metal/carbon matrix. We focus on the relationship between structure and performance with their synthesis strategies. Their application in rechargeable ZABs are also comprehensively discussed. Finally, the perspectives on transition metal/carbon hybrids for oxygen electrocatalysis are presented for the future challenges in rechargeable ZABs.

Abstract:In recent years, rechargeable Li-air and Zn-air batteries have attracted wide attention due to their high theoretical specific energy densities. However, the high cost and poor stability of noble metal catalysts for the oxygen redox reactions limit their practical large-scale application. On contrast, low-cost transition metal oxide ( TMO)-based composite materials exhibit considerable bifunctional activity for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution, and excellent stability, which holds great potential over the precious metal-based catalysts. This work briefly introduces the recent advances in TMO-based composites as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for Li-air and Zn-air batteries. After a brief introduction into the research field of air batteries, metal oxides ( including Co-and Mn-based oxides) and polymetallic oxides ( mainly spinel and perovskite types) are reviewed. In consideration of the poor electronic conductivity of metal oxide catalysts, composites including additional conductive materials are also introduced. Finally, challenges and perspectives of bifunctional TMOs are emphasized to stimulate innovations for the future development of practical Li-air and Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Carbon-based catalysts are potential substitutes for noble-metal catalysts in the oxygen reduction reaction（ORR） owing to their excellent electrical conductivities and chemical stabilities.To rationally design and accelerate the identification of highly efficient carbon-based ORR catalysts,improving the design of the active sites and microstructures is necessary.In this review,strategies for improving the intrinsic performances,activities,stabilities,and anti-poisoning properties of catalysts are analyzed.As a critical component of the micro structure,the porous structures of catalysts significantly affect their distributions of active sites and levels of mass transfer,which are also extensively analyzed.Finally,based on the formation of active sites and the fabrication of porous structures,conclusions and perspectives regarding the future development of highly efficient carbon-based electrocatalysts are provided.

Abstract:<p>Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a vital role in electrochemical water splitting, leading to a more feasible route for sustainably and eco-friendly producing hydrogen energy. Rather than noble metal catalysts with scarcity and expense, first raw 3d dual transition metal non-oxides are promising candidates to achieve superior OER activity and durability in alkaline solution due to their tunable electron structure, high conductivity, and cost-off advantages. Herein, a concise review of recent advances in designing 3d dual transition metal non-oxides electrocatalysts for OER under alkaline condition is provided with particular emphasis on structure-performance relationships. The diverse effects of 3d dual transition metals, especially for Ti, V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, and Zn, are highlighted in discussion regarding synthesis strategies and OER performances of corresponding electrocatalysts, in different categories of transition metal sulfides, selenides, phosphides, nitrides, and other non-oxides. Finally, existent challenges and directional perspectives for developing first raw 3d dual transition metal non-oxides electrocatalysts with outstanding OER performance are outlined.</p>

Abstract:Water splitting is the essential chemical reaction to enable the storage of intermittent energies such as solar and wind in the form of hydrogen fuel. The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is often considered as the bottleneck in water splitting. Though metal oxides had been reported as OER electrocatalysts more than half a century ago, the recent interest in renewable energy storage has spurred a renaissance of the studies of transition metal oxides as Earth-abundant and nonprecious OER catalysts. This Perspective presents major progress in several key areas of the field such as theoretical understanding, activity trend, in situ and operando characterization, active site determination, and novel materials. A personal overview of the past achievements and future challenges is also provided.

Abstract:Metal oxide hollow structures with large surface area, low density, and high loading capacity have received great attention for energy-related applications. Acting as oxygen-related catalysts, hollow-structured transition metal oxides offer low overpotential, fast reaction rate, and excellent stability. Herein, recent progress in the oxygen-related catalysis (e.g., oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and metal-air batteries) of hollow-structured transition metal oxides is discussed. Through a comprehensive outline of hollow-structured spinels, perovskites, rutiles, etc., a rational design strategy is provided for an enhanced oxygen-related catalysis performance from the viewpoint of crystal structures. Urgent challenges and further research directions are presented for hollow-structured transition metal oxides toward excellent oxygen-related catalysis.
