Abstract:Developing highly efficient catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a key to the fabrication of commercially viable fuel cell devices for future energy applications. Considerable progress has been made to reduce Pt usage and improve performance of the Pt catalysts by modulating exposed facets of Pt nanocrystals and combining Pt with other metals to generate bimetallic nanocrystals with structures in the form of alloys, core-shells, branches or anisotropies. Apart from the above methods, confining Pt-based nanoparticles (NPs) surfaces with elaborately selected layers such as polymers, silicon or carbons can also lead to an optimized Pt electronic structure, which is beneficial to ORR process. In this minireview, we summarize the recent advancements in the area of surface-confined Pt-based electrocatalysts for ORR with emphasis on introducing the design strategies and synthesis methodologies. The integration of these catalysts into ORR operations and the resulting performance as well as the strengthening mechanisms is also discussed. Meanwhile, the insights into the research directions are proposed in order to shed light on the future development of surface-confined Pt-based ORR catalysts.

Abstract:Pt‐based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are the topic of extensive and intensive research since a few decades. Nevertheless, the scarcity of these Pt‐based electrocatalysts, their high cost and unsatisfactory durability are the primary hindrances to their further commercialization. In recent years, non‐Pt electrocatalysts have garnered considerable interest as alternatives to Pt‐based catalysts for the ORR. This review highlights the synthesis, catalytic activity and key factors, namely also active sites, of various nanostructured non‐Pt catalysts that can be grouped into five categories: monometallic catalysts; bimetallic or multimetallic catalysts; transition metal oxides/chalcogenides/nitrides/oxynitrides/carbides; heteroatom‐doped carbon catalysts with and without transition metals and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)‐derived catalysts that have emerged as a class of promising catalysts recently. For metallic catalysts, the ORR activity and durability can be tuned by capitalizing on such effects as surface ligands and lattice strain; for heteroatom‐doped carbon catalysts, some factors like mass transport and electric conductivity are nontrivial for enhancement of the ORR activity. Recent research advances are presented and an outlook for future research is provided.

Abstract:Pt‐based electrocatalysts are considered as one of the most promising choices to facilitate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), and the key factor enabling their success is to reduce the required amount of platinum. Herein, we focus on illuminating both the theoretical mechanisms which enable enhanced and sustained ORR activity and the practical methods to achieve them in catalysts. The various multi‐step pathways of ORR are firstly reviewed and the rate‐determining steps based on the reaction intermediates and their binding energies are analyzed. We then explain the critical aspects of Pt‐based electrocatalysts to tune oxygen reduction properties from the viewpoints of active sites exposure and altering the surface electronic structure, and further summarize representative research progress towards practically achieving these activity enhancements with a focus on platinum size reduction, shape control and core Pt elimination methods. We finally outline the remaining challenges and provide our perspectives with regard to further enhancing their activities.

Abstract:Abstract Today, Pt/C catalysts are widely used in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The practical applications of PEMFCs still face many limitations in the preparation of advanced Pt‐based catalysts, including high cost, limited life‐time, and insufficient power density. A kinetically sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is primarily responsible for these issues. The development of advanced Pt‐based catalysts is crucial for solving these problems when the large‐scale application of PEMFCs is to be realized. Herein, we demonstrate the design principle of advanced Pt‐based catalysts with an emphasis on theoretical understandings to practical applications. Generally, three main strategies (including strain effect, electronic effect, and ensemble effect) that governing the initial activity of Pt‐based electrocatalysts are elaborated in detail in this review. Recent advanced Pt‐based ORR catalysts are summarized and we present representative achievements to further reveal the relationship of excellent ORR performance based on theoretical mechanisms. Then we focus on the preparation standards of membrane electrode assembles and testing protocols in practice. Finally, we predict the remaining challenges and present our perspectives with regards to design strategies for improving ORR performance of Pt‐based catalysts in the future.

Abstract:Carbon-based materials have been regarded as the most promising alternatives to high-cost and scarce Pt-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Thus, developing highly efficient carbon-based catalysts becomes the key to realize the commercialization of fuel cells. In this Minireview, the recent advances in the carbon-based ORR catalysts have been reviewed carefully, with particular attention paid to understanding of the types and structures of active sites, and the strategies used in manipulating the electron and geometry structures for better performances. Besides, we also discuss the challenges and directions for future research of carbon-based catalysts.
Design and Preparation of Highly Active Pt-Pd/C Catalyst for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:ORR (Oxygen Reduction Reaction) has been studied on Pt-Pd/C catalyst both experimentally and theoretically to gain insight into the promotion effect of PtPd nanoclusters to ORR and to provide guidelines for the design of an improved ORR catalyst. First, Pt3Pd1/C, Pt1Pd1/C, and Pt/C catalysts were prepared by the polyol process in ethylene glycol solution and characterized by XRD (X-ray diffraction), TEM ( transmission electron microscope), and CV ( cyclic voltammetry) techniques. XRD patterns reveal that all the catalysts have disordered face-centered cubic structures similar to the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Low-resolution TEM images indicate that the dispersion of the metal nanoparticles on the carbon support is uniform and in a narrow particle size range for Pt3Pd1/C and Pt/C catalysts, while for Pt1Pd1/C catalyst, the dispersion of the metal nanoparticles on the carbon support is uneven with a little agglomeration. Point resolved EDS ( energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) of the individual particles have shown that both Pt and Pd are represented in the single nanoparticle for the Pt-Pd/C catalysts. CV tests show that Pd-containing catalysts of Pt3Pd1/C and Pt1Pd1/C have different features in the hydrogen adsorption-desorption region from pure Pt/C catalyst. The catalytic activity of Pt3Pd1/C for ORR is a little improved compared with Pt/C or Pt1Pd1/C catalyst in RDE ( rotating disk electrode) measurement. Detailed work reveals that the activity of ORR could be further improved on Pt-Pd/C catalyst with Pt rich on the metal nanoparticles surface. This point is consistent with the theoretical calculation results. DFT ( Density Function Theory) studies on the adsorption and dissociation of O-2 on PtPd cluster indicate that the presence of Pd atoms facilitates the dissociation of O-2 on Pt sites.

Abstract:The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is one of the key catalytic reactions for hydrogen fuel cells, biofuel cells and metal–air cells. However, due to the complex four-electron catalytic process, the kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction are sluggish. Platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts represented by platinum and palladium are considered to be the most active ORR catalysts. However, the price and reserves of Pt/Pd are major concerns and issues for their commercial application. Improving the catalytic performance of PGM catalysts can effectively reduce their loading and material cost in a catalytic system, and they will be more economical and practical. In this review, we introduce the kinetics and mechanisms of Pt/Pd-based catalysts for the ORR, summarize the main factors affecting the catalytic performance of PGMs, and discuss the recent progress of Pt/Pd-based catalysts. In addition, the remaining challenges and future prospects in the design and improvement of Pt/Pd-based catalysts of the ORR are also discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, non-Pt-based ORR catalysts have been developing rapidly and have achieved performance comparable to or even surpassing Pt precious metal catalysts in specific reactions, offering new possibilities for Pt-based catalyst replacement and showing great promise for application. This paper reviews the recent research progress of non-Pt-based fuel cell ORR catalysts. The latest research progress of non-Pt-based ORR SACs (including single metal active site ORR SACs, multi-metal active site ORR SACs, and non-Pt-based noble metal catalyst ORR SACs), non-metallic ORR catalysts, alloy-based ORR catalysts, high-entropy alloy ORR catalysts, and other non-Pt-based fuel cell ORR catalysts are presented in detail. This paper discusses in detail the synthesis methods, characterization means, optimization of performance, and application prospects of these non-Pt-based ORR catalysts. In addition, this review details the excellent performance of these catalysts in terms of compositional and structural controllability, electrical conductivity, and chemical stability, as well as their ability to exhibit ORR activity comparable to that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. This field is full of opportunities and challenges. In summary, non-Pt-based fuel cells show great potential in ORR. With the continuous improvement of preparation and characterization technologies, catalysts have broad application and market prospects. In addition, the development trend of non-precious metal fuel cell catalysts is reviewed.

Abstract:Pt on a tungsten carbide nanocrystalline support (Pt-WC/C) has been prepared by the direct reduction of a platinum salt precursor combined with intermittent microwave heating (IMH). The Pt-WC/C electrocatalyst shows better performance for oxygen reduction in acidic media than that of pure Pt/C or Pt-WC/C prepared by a mechanical mixing method. The results reveal that the Pt-WC/C electrocatalyst prepared by present method is very active for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with an onset potential of 1.05V versus standard hydrogen electrode (SHE) at ambient temperature, which is over 150mV more positive compared to that of commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Increasing the platinum utilization efficiency is the key to the advancement and broad dissemination of proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Central to the task is the creation of highly active and durable Pt-based catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which demands a comprehensive understanding of the ORR processes on these catalysts under reaction conditions. Past efforts have accumulated a vast wealth of knowledge of the ORR on extended Pt and Pt-alloy model surfaces. While the knowledge has been applied to understanding and designing ORR catalysts, it has also been recognized that these understandings cannot always translate into nanoscale systems. In this Perspective, we will review the progress that the theoretical descriptor has evolved to reconcile the observed differences between extended and nanoscale Pt surfaces, and we highlight the needs in advancing both characterizations and theories in order to understand ORR in the more complex Pt-alloy nanocatalysts. Particularly, understanding the dynamic structure–composition–function relation of Pt-alloy nanocatalysts during ORR demands concerted efforts in precision synthesis, advanced atomistic-scale in situ characterization, and comprehensive computational models.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Recent development of electrochemical technologies for renewable energy conversion and storage has enlightened the importance of tailoring the structures of catalytic materials at the nanoscale. In particular, the design and synthesis of nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have attracted great attention and been extensively studied. Remarkable progress has been made in improving the catalytic activity and stability of ORR catalysts by controlling and tuning the particle size, shape, composition and surface structures, as well as building up sophisticated composite nanostructures in core/shell and nanoporous configurations. Here a brief review is provided for the recent development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the ORR. Instead of providing a complete list of the great amount of work reported in this topic, our focus is placed on fundamental understanding of the structure-property relationships of platinum-based nanomaterials, in particular alloy nanoparticles, in the electrochemical environment. The discussion is guided by correlations between well-defined extended surfaces and practical high-surface-area catalysts. Conclusions are made on challenges that remain and potential implications on other catalytic systems.

Abstract:Fuel cells are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for stationary and mobile power generation due to their high energy yield and low environmental impact of hydrogen oxidation. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at cathode is a very complex process and plays a crucial role during operation of the PEM fuel cells. However, its mechanism and the nature of intermediates involved remain vague. This chapter focuses on the recent theoretical modeling studies of ORR catalysts for PEMFC. Recent theoretical investigations on oxygen reduction electrocatalysts, such as Pt-based catalysts, non-Pt metal catalysts (Pd, Ir, CuCl), and non-precious metal catalysts (transitional metal macrocyclic complexes, conductive polymer materials, and carbon-based materials), are reviewed. The oxygen reduction mechanisms catalyzed by these catalysts are discussed based on the results. © Springer-Verlag London 2013.

Abstract:Advances in chemical syntheses have led to the formation of various kinds of nanoparticles (NPs) with more rational control of size, shape, composition, structure and catalysis. This review highlights recent efforts in the development of Pt and non-Pt based NPs into advanced nanocatalysts for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under fuel-cell reaction conditions. It first outlines the shape controlled synthesis of Pt NPs and their shape-dependent ORR. Then it summarizes the studies of alloy and core-shell NPs with controlled electronic (alloying) and strain (geometric) effects for tuning ORR catalysis. It further provides a brief overview of ORR catalytic enhancement with Pt-based NPs supported on graphene and coated with an ionic liquid. The review finally introduces some non-Pt NPs as a new generation of catalysts for ORR. The reported new syntheses with NP parameter-tuning capability should pave the way for future development of highly efficient catalysts for applications in fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and even in other important chemical reactions.

Abstract:Owing to their remarkable catalytic activities, doped nanocarbon materials have been widely employed as efficient noble metal-free catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) towards the artificial energy conversion systems, such as fuel cells and a variety of sensors. After several decades of innovative investigation, the substantial controversies still exist ranging from synthesis strategies to actual active sites for doped nanocarbon materials, but greatly pave the development of sustainable ORR electrocatalysts with high efficiency. This review mainly focuses on the newly developed synthesis methods, such as ball milling, co-doping with multi-elements and low temperature preparation with more predictable structures that were reported in the last five years. Particularly, we have also discussed the open controversies and mechanism studies of doped carbon for ORR.

Abstract:Fuel cells are one of the most promising clean energy devices to substitute for fossil fuel in the future to alleviate energy crisis and environmental pollution.As the key reaction on the cathode in the fuel cells,oxygen reduction reaction（ORR） still requires efficient noble metal catalysts such as the comme rcial Pt/C to boost the reaction for its sluggish kinetics.Therefore,it is critical to design earth-abundant carbonbased catalysts with high efficiency and long-term stability to replace the noble metal-based catalysts.This review focuses on the recent progress about carbon-based ORR catalysts including non-metal doped carbon materials,transition metal-nitrogen-carbon species,transition metal carbides/carbon,single atom catalysts,and other carbon hybrids.And we further infer that the excellent ORR performances can be achieved by the balance of geometric and electronic structures of catalysts such as conductivity,surface area,hierarchical porous structure,defect and doping effect.Additionally,the perspective development trend is also proposed to guide the rational designation of carbon-based catalysts for ORR and even extend to other energy storage and conversion fields in the future.

Abstract:Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells are considered one of the alternatives to fossil energy sources. The slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode and the high price of Pt-based catalysts remain one of the key challenges for the commercial viability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. However, their high cost and susceptibility to poisoning severely limit their use for large-scale commercial applications in fuel cells. Heteroatom-doped porous carbon has attracted extensive attention from scientists due to its advantages such as high specific surface area and the properties conferred by heteroatom doping. On the one hand, we discuss a variety of current methods for the preparation of heteroatom-doped porous carbons, including the template method and the activation method. On the other hand, we discuss the application of heteroatom-doped porous carbon in Pt catalysts, transition metal catalysts and metal-free catalysts. Finally, we also present the pre-existing and challenges of heteroatoms in ORR catalysis, which will drive the development of ORR catalysts.
