Abstract:In recent years, significant progress has been made in the development of Fenton-like catalysts suitable for operation under neutral conditions. In this study, chitosan/FeOOH/CeO2 microspheres were developed using a straightforward coprecipitation method. The catalysts are simple to prepare, cost-effective, and suitable for largescale production. In the presence of 60 mmol/L of H2O2, the catalysts achieved a 98% removal efficiency for 50 mg/L of OTC in simulated wastewater within 30 min at a wide pH range of 3-9. The excellent performance of the catalysts was mainly attributed to the formation of a CeO2-FeOOH heterogeneous structure resulting from the combination of CeO2 and the FeOOH matrix. In addition, the CeO2-FeOOH heterogeneous structure increased the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the surface of CeO2 and allowed the catalyst spheres to maintain a specific surface area of 103.7 m2/g even when the diameter increased to 1.73 +/- 0.16 mm. Density functional theory calculation and other supporting results revealed that Ce(III) served as the primary active centers responsible for the adsorption and activation of H2O2, while Fe(II) at the heterojunction facilitated the regeneration of Ce(III). This study provides insight into the development of efficient catalysts and the fundamental mechanisms of water treatment processes.
Pd/CeO2 Interface with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution/Oxidation Reaction

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction and hydrogen oxidation reaction (HER/HOR) are two key reactions in the electrolysis of water to produce green hydrogen and fuel cells, respectively. However, the slow kinetics of HER/HOR under alkaline conditions and lack of catalysts with good activity and durability limit their development and application. Here, Pd nanoparticles supported by CeO2/C with abundant oxygen vacancies were synthesized for alkaline HER/HOR. The results of physical characterizations and electrochemical measurements indicated that small-size Pd nanoparticles were in full contact with CeO2, and charge transfer occurred at the Pd-CeO2 interface. The rich Pd-CeO2 interface and the interaction between metal and metal oxide carriers greatly improved the electrocatalytic activity of HER and HOR under alkaline conditions. The optimal Pd/CeO2/C exhibited excellent HER/HOR activity with a higher HER exchange current density (1.963 mA cm(-2)) than commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the HER and HOR mass activity of Pd/CeO2/C reached 33 times and 9.2 times that of Pd/C, respectively. Pd/CeO2/C exhibited enhanced electrocatalytic stability due to the anchoring of Pd via abundant oxygen vacancy defects in CeO2/C. This work provides a meaningful reference for the rational regulation of metal-support interfaces and the application of metal-oxide-support-based electrocatalysts in electrocatalytic reactions.
Stabilizing single-atom iron electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction via ceria confining and trapping

Abstract:Atomically dispersed Fe–N–C materials recently hold great interest in costly Pt substitution for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction of fuel cells. However, the heat treatment involved in the material preparation excites Fe aggregating into nanosized species with low activity rather than single-atom Fe sites. Herein, we propose a “ceria-assisted” strategy to preferentially generate active single-atom Fe sites in Fe–N–C materials, which involves oxidative polymerization of pyrrole, Ce3+ and Fe3+ adsorption, and subsequent heat treatment. Because of its spatial confinement and strong trapping for Fe atoms, ceria can effectively suppress agglomeration of isolated Fe atoms and stabilize the Fe atoms by bonding to O in the lattice during the heat treatment, leading to a high content of atomically dispersed Fe (4.6 wt %). Abstract:Ce atom is introduced into the amorphous iron oxyhydroxide nanosheet to tailor electronic structure and octahedral structure for efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction and water splitting, and remarkably improved activity and stability is achieved. Iron oxyhydroxide has been considered an auspicious electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline water electrolysis due to its suitable electronic structure and abundant reserves. However, Fe‐based materials seriously suffer from the tradeoff between activity and stability at a high current density above 100 mA cm−2. In this work, the Ce atom is introduced into the amorphous iron oxyhydroxide (i.e., CeFeOxHy) nanosheet to simultaneously improve the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity and stability for OER through regulating the redox property of iron oxyhydroxide. In particular, the Ce substitution leads to the distorted octahedral crystal structure of CeFeOxHy, along with a regulated coordination site. The CeFeOxHy electrode exhibits a low overpotential of 250 mV at 100 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 35.1 mVdec−1. Moreover, the CeFeOxHy electrode can continuously work for 300 h at 100 mA cm−2. When applying the CeFeOxHy nanosheet electrode as the anode and coupling it with the platinum mesh cathode, the cell voltage for overall water splitting can be lowered to 1.47 V at 10 mA cm−2. This work offers a design strategy for highly active, low‐cost, and durable material through interfacing high valent metals with earth‐abundant oxides/hydroxides.

Abstract:The practical application of electrocatalytic water splitting is hindered by the sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), where the exploration of efficient and stable electrocatalysts toward water oxidation remains a great challenge. Herein, we report an active iron-doped ceria (FeO x /CeO2) catalyst with a highly disordered feature decorated on three-dimensional (3D) nickel foam, which can directly serve as the superior OER electrode in alkaline media. The highly disordered Fe-doped CeO2 catalyst displays remarkable OER performance with a low overpotential of 252 mV to achieve 10 mA cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 45 mV dec–1, and long-term durability for at least 48 h with a stable structure. The superior OER activity of FeO x /CeO2 is attributed to the lattice oxygen activation mechanism facilitated by its disordered structure as well as the high electrochemical surface area. This study provides valuable insights into the rational design of efficient OER catalysts through tailoring the catalyst structure and reaction pathway.

Abstract:Exploring active, stable, earth-abundant, low-cost, and high-efficiency electrocatalysts is highly desired for large-scale industrial applications toward the low-carbon economy. In this study, we apply a versatile selenizing technology to synthesize Se-enriched Co1-xFexSe2 catalysts on nickel foams for oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) and disclose the relationship between the electronic structures of Co1-xFexSe2 (via regulating the atom ratio of Co/Fe) and their OER performance. Owing to the fact that the electron configuration of the Co1-xFexSe2 compounds can be tuned by the incorporated Fe species (electron transfer and lattice distortion), the catalytic activity can be adjusted according to the Co/Fe ratios in the catalyst. Moreover, the morphology of Co1-xFexSe2 is also verified to strongly depend on the Co/Fe ratios, and the thinner Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets are obtained upon selenization treatment, in which it allows more active sites to be exposed to the electrolyte, in turn promoting the OER performance. The Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets not only exhibit superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 41 mV dec-1 but also possess ultrahigh durability with a dinky degeneration of 4.4% even after 72 h fierce water oxidation test in alkaline solution, which outperforms the commercial RuO2 catalyst. As expected, the Co0.4Fe0.6Se2 nanosheets have shown great prospects for practical applications toward water oxidation.

Boosting Activity and Stability of Electrodeposited Amorphous Ce‐Doped NiFe‐Based Catalyst for Electrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract:The amorphous Ce‐doped NiFe‐based catalysts are developed by using a facile electrodeposition approach, which shows superior activity and excellent durability for water oxidation in alkaline media. NiFe‐based hydroxides are considered as promising nonprecious catalysts for water oxidation due to their low cost and easy preparation. However, the rational design of NiFe‐based electrocatalysts remains a great challenge to address the sluggish reaction kinetics and severe deactivation problems for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, the authors report a facile approach to fabricate an amorphous Ce‐doped NiFe hydroxide catalyst, which enables high activity and outstanding stability toward OER in alkaline media. The overpotential of electrodeposited amorphous Ce‐doped NiFe is only 195 mV at 10 mA cm−2. Meanwhile, the durability of the amorphous Ce‐doped NiFe is maintained for 300 h at 100 mA cm−2. The comprehensive characterization results reveal that the improved electrochemical performance of the amorphous Ce‐doped NiFe catalyst is originated from the favorable oxidation transition of active sites enabled by Ce‐doping. It is a very good strategy to introduce highly oxidized state ions to regulate the NiFe‐based catalyst to improve the catalytic activity and stability.

Abstract:High-entropy oxide (HEO) electrocatalysts are appealing for multi-step catalytic reactions as their high compositional diversity and multi-element synergy effects. Herein, we find that the metal-oxygen (M-O) interactions in FeCoNi-based HEO can be well-optimized by introducing Al and Ce elements. The in-situ electrochemistry-triggered Al leaching exposes abundant newly-formed active sites with greatly reduced energy difference between TM 3d and O 2p orbitals. This fact shows the enhancement of M-O covalency, which is further quantified by the Fe/Co/Ni charge calculations. The stronger M-O covalency greatly decreases the activation energy of water oxidation at Fe/Co/Ni sites and the barrier of electrical transfer. Furthermore, the Ce element downshifts the O 2p band center, effectively refraining lattice oxygen loss. These advantages enable a supersmall overpotential of 303.7 mV at 500 mA cm −2 that maintains 95.8 % even operating for 840 h, which is the best report for the HEOs to date.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent stability at high current densities for overall water splitting is a challenging but urgent goal. Herein, a novel kind of significantly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts has been elaborately designed through the fabrication of Fe-doped Ni 2 P nanosheets decorated with CeO 2 nanoparticles (Fe-Ni 2 P/CeO 2 ) grown on Ni foam. It reveals the existence of electron transfer from Ni 2+ to Ce 4+ , resulting in an increase of Ni 3+ , of which the strong Lewis acidity promotes the adsorption of OH − and thus facilitates the formation and conversion of oxygen-related intermediates during the water splitting process. The resulting catalyst shows outstanding electrocatalytic activities for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (η 20 = 190 mV, η 1000 = 260 mV) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) (η 20 = 78 mV, η 1000 = 292 mV). Moreover, when utilized for overall water splitting, the Fe-Ni 2 P/CeO 2 requires very low voltages of 1.52 V and 2.88 V to achieve current densities of 20 mA cm −2 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming the Pt/C || RuO 2 electrolyzer. Importantly, the as-designed electrolyzer exhibits exceptional durability at a high current density of 1000 mA cm −2 . This work has demonstrated an effective strategy for designing non-precious metal heterojunctions with abundant electrocatalytic active sites to drive efficient overall water splitting.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting in acidic media based on a proton-exchange membrane (PEM) is a promising technique for the large-scale production of hydrogen. However, developing electrocatalysts with high activity and excellent stability for an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic media is still a big challenge. Herein, a Ce-x-IrO2 catalyst supported on N-doped porous carbon (NPC) was developed via doping Ce into IrO2 nanoparticles. The Ce-x-IrO2 nanoparticles were uniformly distributed on NPC due to the high surface area. The optimized Ce-0.2-IrO2 @NPC delivers a low overpotential of 224 mV and excellent stability of 100 h in 0.5 M H2SO4 at 10 mA cm(-2). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the introduction of Ce could modify the electronic structure of IOr(2), decreasing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step for OER and enhancing the electrochemical OER performance. Our work opens up a new way of developing anodic electrocatalysts, which can be stably applied in acidic media.

Abstract:The sluggish anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is currently the major hinderance for hydrogen production from water splitting. Iron-based materials are promising cost-effective candidates for OER electrocatalysts, however their low intrinsic activity limits their performance. Here we report a defect-engineered Fe2O3-CeO(2 )heterojunction with rich oxygen vacancies (Fe2O3@CeO2-OV), exhibiting ultralow overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and 317 mV at 1000 mA cm(-2), respectively, alongside superior stability and durability. Advanced characterization and density functional theory calculations demonstrate that defect engineering combined with heterojunction formation activates the lattice oxygen, switching the reaction pathway from the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) to the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). The oxygen vacancies are revealed to form preferably on CeO2 and induce not only electronic but also geometric modulation, contributing to strong Fe2O3-CeO2 interfacial interaction and charge transfer from CeO2 to Fe2O3, facilitating the O-2 desorption and boosting the intrinsic activity.
Role of amorphous engineering and cerium doping in NiFe oxyhydroxide for electrocatalytic water oxidation

Abstract:Amorphous engineering and atomistic doping provide an effective way to improve the catalytic activity in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of transition metal layered double hydroxides. Herein, Cerium (Ce) was introduced into NiFe-based oxyhydroxide using a modified aqueous sol-gel procedure. Ce as an electron acceptor promoted the coupling oxidation of Ni2+/3+ in NiFe oxyhydroxide, and the activated oxyhydroxide showed excellent catalytic activity in OER. The amorphous NiFeCe oxyhydroxide electrocatalyst demonstrated great modified OER catalytic activity under alkaline conditions and excellent cyclic stability, with an overpotential of only 284 mV at 50 mA cm-2, which was significantly better than amorphous NiFe oxyhydroxide and crystalline NiFeCe oxyhydroxide. Theoretical investigations further indicated that the overpotential of the rate-determining step (*OOH deprotonation) decreased from 0.66 to 0.41 V after Ce doping and strong electron interaction, effectively reducing the dependence of proton activity in the solution of OER, and optimizing the adsorption/desorption process of related oxygen-containing species in the reaction. This work also provides a good reference for optimizing OER activity by using rare-earth-metal induced electronic regulation strategies.

Abstract:In the pursuit of stable, high performance Ni-based oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, modifying the local chemical compositions or fabricating hybrid nanostructures to generate abundant interfaces for improving the water oxidation activity of electrocatalysts has emerged as an effective strategy. Herein, we report the facile development of a Ni3S2-CeO2 hybrid nanostructure via an electrodeposition method. Benefiting from the strong interfacial interaction between Ni3S2 and CeO2, the electron transfer is notably improved and the water oxidation activity of Ni3S2 nanosheets is significantly enhanced. In 1.0 M KOH, the Ni3S2-CeO2 electrocatalyst achieves a current density of 20 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 264 mV, which is 92 mV lower than that of Ni3S2. Moreover, Ni3S2-CeO2 exhibits superior electrochemical stability. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the enhanced OER electrocatalytic performance of Ni3S2-CeO2 can be ascribed to an increase in the binding strength of the reaction intermediates at the Ni3S2-CeO2 interface.

Abstract:Metal borides have been acknowledged as promising candidates for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, amorphous ternary metal borides (Ni-Ce-B) with different molar ratios of Ce% are achieved by a facile wet chemical method. With the optimal 5% of Ce, the as-prepared Ni-Ce-B-5/NF electrode exhibits comparable OER performance with lower overpotential (240 mV) than that of pure Ni-B/NF electrode (330 mV) and other metal borides. The high activity of Ni-Ce-B/NF is attributed to the amorphous structure and synergistic effect of binary metal Ni and Ce in Ni-Ce-B materials. Additionally, CeO2-x forms and serves as an electron acceptor during the self-electrooxidation process, facilitating the formation of crystalline high-valence nickel species, resulting in robust electrocatalysis and long-term stability. This work presents a Ce-based metal boride as a promising candidate for the low-cost and highly efficient OER catalyst.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key anode reaction for electrochemical water splitting, while it is severely hindered by the sluggish rection kinetics and insufficient stability of traditional electrocatalysts. To address the urgent need for efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts, a promising heterogenous CoFe-layered double hydroxide-based electrocatalyst (Ce@CoFe-LDH) is developed by a one-step hydrothermal method combined with rapid electrodeposition. The ultrafine Ce(OH)3 nanoparticles effectively trigger the local surface activity of CoFe-LDH nanowires by the interface electron transfer, thereby promoting the improvement of OER activity and stability. Consequently, the Ce@CoFe-LDH electrocatalyst only needs 207 mV overpotential to obtain 10 mA cm-2, while the Tafel slope is only 50.0 mV dec-1, smaller than those of CoFe-LDH catalyst (232 mV, 74.2 mV dec-1, respectively). Importantly, the Ce@CoFe-LDH exhibits remarkable catalytic durability toward OER at 100 mA cm-2 over 120 hours. First-principles theoretical calculations reveal that interface engineering can be used to optimize the electronic structure of Ce@CoFe-LDH by the charge redistribution and thereby decrease the energy barrier of rate-determining step. In addition, the Ce@CoFe-LDH electrocatalyst as anode for water splitting also shows a low cell potential of 1.47 V at 10 mA cm-2 and robust stability at 100 mA cm-2 over 50 hours. Overall, this work provides new insights into designing efficient OER electrocatalysts for scalable water splitting in clean energy and environmental applications.

High‐Valence Metals Accelerate the Reaction Kinetics for Boosting Water Oxidation

Abstract:A model catalyst, CeO2‐NiFeOxHy, is presented to achieve the modulation of valence state of active site (Ni2+→Ni3+→Ni4+) for improved OER. It is found that the CeO2‐NiFeOxHy crystalline‐amorphous interface promotes the in situ reconstruction of Ni‐O to the NiOOH Ni active layer. The incorporation of Fe3+ accelerates the formation of Ni4+ in the OER process because Fe3+ has the similar behavior to the Lewis acid. The transition metal with high valence state in oxyhydroxides can accelerate the reaction kinetics, enabling highly intrinsic OER activity. However, the formation of high‐valence transition‐metal ions is thermodynamically unfavorable in most cases. Here, a novel strategy is proposed to realize the purpose and reveal the mechanism by constructing amorphous phase and incorporating of elements with the characteristic of Lewis acid or variable charge state. A model catalyst, CeO2‐NiFeOxHy, is presented to achieve the modulation of valence state of active site (Ni2+→Ni3+→Ni4+) for improved OER, leading to dominant active sites with high valence state. The CeO2‐NiFeOxHy electrode exhibits superior OER performance with overpotential of 214 and 659 mV at 10 and 500 mA cm−2, respectively (without IR correction), and high stability, which are much better than those of NiOxHy, NiFeOxHy and CeO2‐NiOxHy. These findings provide an effective strategy to achieve the active metals with high‐valence state for highly efficient OER.

Abstract:A new CeO2/CoSe2 nanobelt composite is developed as a highly effective water oxidation electrocatalyst by growing CeO2 nanoparticles in situ on CoSe2 nanobelts, via a simple polyol reduction route. As demonstrated by S.-H. Yu and co-workers on page 182, such CeO2/CoSe2 nanobelt composites are able to catalyse exteremely high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity, even better than the state-of-the-art RuO2 catalyst in an alkaline medium.
