Abstract:A reasoning Boolean operation based CAD modeling approach applied to construct heterogeneous material objects is presented. This reasoning Boolean operation consists of a merging operation and an extracting operation, and it is executed according to the material-dominant information defined in the designed heterogeneous object database. In addition to the material-dominant Boolean union, subtraction, and intersection, a new Boolean complex_union operation is defined and introduced to the set of the reasoning Boolean operation. The Boolean complex_union ‘assembles’ the results of the material-dominant Boolean intersection and subtraction to form a new modeling assembly for the heterogeneous object. Due to the CAD-based nature, the thus formed heterogeneous model can be readily implemented with advanced CAD/CAE/CAM software for integrated design, analysis, and simulation. An example of such an application, its hierarchy of the model database, and the major steps of the model construction are described.

Abstract:In this paper, an algorithm for Boolean operation between sculptured models is presented and the accuracy, efficiency and robustness are the main considerations. The solid model is represented with the trimmed parametric patches and half edge data structure. Hierarchy intersection is applied for unified classification, and tracing the intersection curve to overcome degenerate cases occurring frequently in practice is also used. It can easily be extended to Boolean operations for non manifold models. The algorithm as a part of a modeling system on a SGI workstation is implemented.

Abstract:To enhance the ability of current modeling system, an uniformed representation is employed to represent wire-frame, solid, surface models. We present an algorithm for Boolean operation between the models using the representation. Accuracy, efficiency and robustness are the main consideration. The geometric information is represented with trimmed parametric patches and trimmed parametric splines. The topological information is represented with an extended half-edge data structure. In the process of intersection calculation, hierarchy intersection is applied for unified classification, and tracing the intersection curve to overcome degenerate cases that occur frequently in practice. And the algorithm can be easily extended to Boolean operations for non-manifold models. The algorithm has been implemented as the modeling kernel of a feature based modeling system named GS-CAD98, which was developed on Windows/NT platform.

Abstract:A new algorithm is proposed to recast Boolean operations of triangulated solids as a boundary conforming tetrahedral meshing problem. Different from those existing algorithms that merely maintain a conforming surface mesh, the new algorithm maintains a boundary conforming volume mesh at the same time of computing surface intersections. This volume mesh not only provides a background structure in helping the improvement of the efficiency of intersection computations, but also enables the development of a set of efficient and reliable flood-filling type procedures to extract the Boolean outputs. The efficiency and robustness of the proposed algorithm are investigated in further details, and various techniques are suggested to tackle these two issues accordingly. Finally, the performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated by performing suitable test cases and the results are compared well with those data obtained by other state-of-the-art codes.

Abstract:To enhance the geometric ability of current modeling system, the non regular precise geometric model is used as the unified data structure to represent and manipulate the wire frame models, the surface models and the solid models in the algorithms. The authors present the data structure and Boolean operation in this paper. For Boolean operation, accuracy, efficiency and robustness are the main consideration. As the geometric kernel of a feature based modeling system, the algorithm has been implemented in a feature based modeling system named GS CAD98 on NT platform.

Abstract:A processing algorithm for freeform fabrication of heterogeneous structures is presented. The algorithm was developed based on the heterogeneous fabrication structural model, which was constructed from the STL based multi‐material volume regions and with material identifications. The reasoning Boolean operation based modelling approach was used to construct the heterogeneous CAD assembly and to output the needed STL format. Procedures for generating the database hierarchy and the storage of the heterogeneous structural model, and derivation for developing the processing algorithm for layered fabrication of heterogeneous structure are presented. The developed algorithm was applied to a heterogeneous structure consisting of two discrete material volumes, and the detailed processing path is described.

Abstract:The current computer-aided technologies in design and product development, the evolution of CAD modeling, and a framework of multi-volume CAD modeling system for heterogeneous object design and fabrication are presented in this paper. The multi-volume CAD modeling system is presented based on nonmanifold topological elements. Material identifications are defined as design attributes introduced along with geometric and topological information at the design stage. Extended Euler operation and reasoning Boolean operations for merging and extraction are executed according to the associated material identifications in the developed multi-volume modeling system for heterogeneous object. An application example and a pseudo-processing algorithm for prototyping of heterogeneous structure through solid free-form fabrication are also described.

Abstract:A novel modeling approach for designing and constructing CAD-based composite unit cells is presented. The modeling technique is developed based on a reasoning Boolean operation algorithm which consists of merging and extracting operation to construct composite unit cells at the heterogeneous material level. Owing to its CAD-based nature, the unit cell models can be readily implemented with advanced CAD/CAE/CAM systems for integrated design, simulation, and manufacturing of advanced composites. A seamless integration between the CAD model and finite element analysis, and results of stress and deformation in composite unit cells and in the fiber and matrix is demonstrated. The proposed modeling technique is able to capture the designed composite geometry, reinforced fiber architecture, and constituent material heterogeneity. Sample unit cells representing 2D woven fabric, 2D basket weave, 3D tri-axial braided, and 3D uni-directional composite are also presented.

Abstract:3D geological modeling is a complex process,especially when processing the multi-solid modeling issues.The completed topological relationship between geological solids should be maintained.In face of the difficulty of getting basic data and the complexity of geological phenomenon itself,the current modeling technologies can not handle the intersection and gap between geological solids.Furthermore,the spatial analysis of 3D geological models is a common requirement in engineering geology information system,such as simulation for excavation.This paper proposes a kind of Boolean operation algorithm based on TIN,which use fast collision detection method and improved triangle intersection algorithm and containment test algorithm.The algorithm resolves the Boolean operations of geological entities such as join,union and difference.The method can deal with the problem of geological body modeling which having complicated spatial relationship such as invasion and cross-bedding.It is also applicable to the engineering analysis applications on geological models like as excavation simulation.The algorithm is tested in the development of a geotechnical engineering information system of Beijing.

Abstract:We present a robust framework to conduct material modeling suitable for continuously varying materials with a local material composition control. The geometry and attribute representations are defined using two trivariate T-splines based on the same parametric domain. The optimization process decreases the mismatch of geometry and attribute between the input tetrahedral mesh and the trivariate T-splines, which consists of two alternately executed procedures: progressive fitting and octree-based adaptive refinement. Control points are dynamically updated without constructing large matrices as used in finite element method. To improve computational efficiency of the optimization, adaptive refinement is carried out only in those regions that undergo fine-scale deformation and an octree-based subdivision is directly used to insert control points in the parametric domain. The proposed framework was implemented on medical and synthetic examples to show the robustness of the material modeling framework. The comparison between trivariate T-splines with adaptive refinement and trivariate NURBS with uniform refinement demonstrates the computational efficiency.

Abstract:In the realm of embodied artificial intelligence, the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) play a pivotal role. Although there are effective methods like program-of-thought prompting for LLMs which uses programming language to tackle complex reasoning tasks, the specific impact of code data on the improvement of reasoning capabilities remains under-explored. To address this gap, we propose complexity-impacted reasoning score (CIRS), which combines structural and logical attributes, to measure the correlation between code and reasoning abilities. Specifically, we use the abstract syntax tree to encode the structural information and calculate logical complexity by considering the difficulty and the cyclomatic complexity. Through an empirical analysis, we find not all code data of complexity can be learned or understood by LLMs. Optimal level of complexity is critical to the improvement of reasoning abilities by program-aided prompting. Then we design an auto-synthesizing and stratifying algorithm, and apply it to instruction generation for mathematical reasoning and code data filtering for code generation tasks. Extensive results demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed approach.

Abstract:Assembly mating constraints have significance in many different fields such as assembly design and assembly planning. This paper presents a novel approach for automatically recognizing assembly mating constraints from B-Rep model. It is composed of geometric reasoning and constraint verification. The general geometric reasoning rules are extended to handle the case of CAD modeling with tolerance and avoid some redundant constraints. According to the implicit assembly semantic, an algorithm based on the idea of mating cells identification is introduced for verifying and enhancing the validity of mating constraints resulting from geometric reasoning. Experimental results show that this approach can highly enhance the correctness and validity of automatic acquisition of mating constraints

Abstract:We present a Boolean operation algorithm for free-form solid models represented in geometry images. By taking advantage of the regular data organization of geometry images, our algorithm can perform efficient surface division using boundary-fill algorithm which is previously used for digital image processing. A quadtree subdivision scheme is also applied to the geometry images to accelerate the intersection line calculation. Experimental result shows that the algorithm can generate well-defined closed triangle meshes for Boolean operations. The resulted triangle mesh can also be converted into a geometry image for further processing.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved modeling algorithm based on modified fuzzy Petri net for fuzzy reasoning. The asynchronized property of token was neglected due to simple structures of fuzzy Petri net models for fuzzy reasoning in literatures. The property will cause uncertain results of reasoning for complex problems. The modeling algorithm aims mainly at solving this issue based on fuzzy Petri net whose arc power function, transition function and place capacity are modified. Compared with existing fuzzy Petri nets, the modified fuzzy Petri net can be used to reason according to inherent firing mechanism without additional control mechanism. The algorithm uses arc power and module replacement to deal with reasoning uncertainty and structure conflict. The validity of the algorithm for forward/backward reasoning is proved for acyclic fuzzy rule-based systems. An example is given to illustrate the validity of the proposed algorithm for reasoning.

Abstract:Reasoning, a crucial ability for complex problem-solving, plays a pivotal role in various real-world settings such as negotiation, medical diagnosis, and criminal investigation. It serves as a fundamental methodology in the field of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). With the ongoing development of foundation models, e.g., Large Language Models (LLMs), there is a growing interest in exploring their abilities in reasoning tasks. In this paper, we introduce seminal foundation models proposed or adaptable for reasoning, highlighting the latest advancements in various reasoning tasks, methods, and benchmarks. We then delve into the potential future directions behind the emergence of reasoning abilities within foundation models. We also discuss the relevance of multimodal learning, autonomous agents, and super alignment in the context of reasoning. By discussing these future research directions, we hope to inspire researchers in their exploration of this field, stimulate further advancements in reasoning with foundation models, and contribute to the development of AGI.

Abstract:Semantic Web (SW), commonly regarded as the next generation of the Web, is an emerging vision of the new Web from the Knowledge Representation and the Web communities. To realize this vision, a series of techniques has been proposed. Semantic Web Ontology Langauge (OWL) and its extension Semantic Web rule Language (SWRL) and Semantic Web Logic Language (SWRL-FOL) are some of the most important outputs from the SW activities. However the existing reasoning and consistency checking tools for those languages are primitive. This paper proposes using the existing formal modelling tool, in particular Alloy, to provide an automatic reasoning service for the Semantic Web ontology family languages (OWL/SWRL/SWRL-FOL).

Abstract:This paper presents a unified differentiable boolean operator for implicit solid shape modeling using Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG). Traditional CSG relies on min, max operators to perform boolean operations on implicit shapes. But because these boolean operators are discontinuous and discrete in the choice of operations, this makes optimization over the CSG representation challenging. Drawing inspiration from fuzzy logic, we present a unified boolean operator that outputs a continuous function and is differentiable with respect to operator types. This enables optimization of both the primitives and the boolean operations employed in CSG with continuous optimization techniques, such as gradient descent. We further demonstrate that such a continuous boolean operator allows modeling of both sharp mechanical objects and smooth organic shapes with the same framework. Our proposed boolean operator opens up new possibilities for future research toward fully continuous CSG optimization.
