Abstract:By reviewing bullwhip effect and demand oscillation existing in the Supply Chain Management(SCM),the coordinate issue between inventory cost and Customer Demand Satisfactory(CDS) is discussed.Then,by introducing the Model Predictive Control(MPC) strategy,and the translation of some concepts in process industrial control into the SCM fields,the optimization of supply chain network is successfully realized.Further more,a one-product,three-echelon demand network is modeled and simulated later to analyze its performance in the presence of significant uncertainty,forecast error,and constraints of inventory levels.The result successfully mitigates the bullwhip effect in the supply chain while reducing safety stocks to profitable levels and improving customer demand satisfaction.

Based on actual distribution process data from a pharmaceutical logistics distribution center, the proposed theories and methods are validated against real-world engineering backgrounds.

Abstract:ABSTRACTThis paper presents a model predictive control (MPC) method for a single supply chain (SC) unit. In order to make the most profit, the prediction of demand and the policy of inventory are the key factors for an SC unit. The ordering is a manipulate variable for an SC unit, and the pricing is introduced as another manipulate variable in this paper. The supposed price has determinate effect on the demand. The demand then can be regarded as a determinate part and a stochastic part. The inventory is regarded as a probability problem because of the stochastic demand. The two manipulate variables bring different dynamics into the SC unit. An MPC is designed, and the two‐time scale characteristic of the two manipulate variables is considered simultaneously for the SC unit. By comparing with MPC without dynamic pricing policy and order‐up‐to‐level policy, we found that the simulation results approve the validity of the MPC with dynamic pricing policy. © 2012 Curtin University of Technology and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:This paper studies the impact factors and solutions for improving management performance of supply chain inventory control system based on the principles of system dynamics and artificial simulation from the perspective of dynamic complexity. This paper also takes the impact of RFID on the supply chain management into consideration under the context of the Internet of things. We think that "System Structure", "Control Policy" and "Control Parameters" are three kinds of important factors to affect the performance of supply chain inventory management; and presents the "structural solutions" of adjusting the ordering cycle to match lead time, the "strategic solutions" based on taking the order bill amounts and the goods in transit into account, and the "operational solutions" based on parameter control. Then this paper probes the ways of their influence on the management performance under the condition of centralized control and decentralized control. Results show that the effectiveness of these three solutions on management performance is increasing under the condition of centralized control and is decreasing under the condition of decentralized control in turn. The results further show that the system thinking is important and effective to deal with the dynamic complex systems.

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to make a contribution to a more effective management for supply chains and networks, which we are subsuming under the title supply systems. We conceive of supply systems management as the design, control, and development of logistics along the value chain or in value networks. In this article, we concentrate on control, i.e., the regulation and steering of supply systems from production to customer and vice versa, with the help of system dynamics modeling and simulation. Traditionally, supply chain management has been heavily supported by discrete event simulation and optimization models on very detailed levels. Established tools, e.g., Manufacturing Resources Planning, Enterprise Resources Planning, and Production Planning Systems, have emphasized highly specialized functions, such as the planning for optimal capacity use and achievement of delivery goals, via the sequencing, scheduling, and dispatching of individual orders, or the global allocation of resources but without the possibility to evaluate different outcomes of the allocation process. In the quest for efficiency and effectiveness, new approaches to control, which lead beyond these functions of disposition, are needed. We present a model that combines two systemic methodologies that operate on higher levels of aggregation and complement each other: system dynamics to model and simulate the supply chain and cybernetic control to apply control-theoretical concepts, namely proportional, derivative, and integral control, in a combined mode as well as according to a recursive logic of distributed control. This way, substantial improvements in both efficiency and effectiveness can be achieved, and ultimately organizational viability can be enhanced.

Abstract:Bullwhip effect is prevalent in supply chains, creating supply and inventory risks that affect marketing, supply and production. However, there are limited researches on the optimization of chemical supply chain inventory management. In order to solve the above problem, this paper took the sulfur product supply chain of a sulfur plant as an example, combined with the idea of system dynamics, and systematically studied the inventory control strategy in the distributor-retailer two-level inventory system constituted by the supply chain. Firstly, the causal loop diagram was drawn according to the system relationship between variables in the two-level supply chain, and then the system dynamics model of sulfur product supply chain was formed. Finally, problems existing in the supply chain were explored through simulation, and optimization suggestions were submitted. It can be concluded from the simulation results that there was bullwhip effect in the sulfur product supply chain, and the delay of transportation time and the change of inventory adjustment time would have an impact on the inventory level of each node enterprise in the supply chain. Therefore, the method of building an information sharing platform, implementing visual information management, and adopting logistics transportation service outsourcing could enhance the information exchange among node enterprises, so as to improve the operational efficiency of the entire product supply chain.

Abstract:The existence of time delay causes the operation of supply chain system to aggravate the instability, induce bullwhip effect and reduce overall performance. In this paper, a discrete mathematical model with time-varying delay is constructed to investigate supply chain inventory network system with time-varying delay. Based on the proposed discrete mathematical model with time-varying delay, the inventory control strategy is desgined by using Lyapunov-Krosovskii functional analysis method. The feasibility analysis of supply chain inventory control strategy on bullwhip effect and the influence factors of time-varying delay are discussed by means of numerical simulation. The results prove that the inventory control strategy can restrain bullwhip effect effectively. It provides a novel approach to study supply chain inventory network system with time-varying delay from discrete perspective.

Abstract:This research aims to develop a simulation approach based on system dynamics modelling (SDM) and adaptive network based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) for quantifying and reducing the bullwhip effect in a multi-product, multi-stage supply chain. The proposed model is comprised of three groups of variables influencing the bullwhip effect, namely the structure of a supply chain network, supply chain contributions (ordering process in regular situation or when a supplier has a promotion or shortage gaming) and supply chain performances (the number of defects and ordering lead time). As a result, a two layer simulation model is developed with three generic models. The flexibility of this proposed approach is its ability to model various types of ordering policies which are basic inventory policies, material requirement planning (MRP) system and just in time (JIT) approach. The supply chain of a beverage company was selected to validate and demonstrate the flexibility of the proposed model. The findings of the proposed simulation model are consistent with the results obtained from the case study. The error magnitude of the bullwhip effect level varied between 0 and 9% resulting in bullwhip effect reductions of up to 92%. Accordingly, the bullwhip effect levels are significantly decreased by using the proposed simulation model.

Existing supply chain dynamics models cannot show the continuous-discrete combined features. In this paper, Agent-based Model and System Dynamics Model are used in AnyLogic to do modeling and simulation of supply chain, which contains factory, distributer, retailer and consumer. Bullship effect is showed in the simulation results.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effects of information sharing and early order commitment on the performance of four inventory policies used by retailers in a supply chain of one capacitated supplier and four retailers. Model parameters and operating conditions are emulated from a local business supplying a standard product to its retailers. Through computer simulation and subsequent analyses, we found that the inventory policy used by the retailers, information sharing, and early order commitment can significantly influence the performance of the supply chain. Out of the four inventory policies examined, the economic order quantity rule is found to be the best for the retailers and the entire supply chain, but periodic order quantity and Silver–Meal provide the best performance for the supplier. The sharing of future order plans by the retailer and the supplier is also shown to be the most effective way for reducing the supplier’s cost and improving its service level; however, the magnitude of these benefits achieved is less for the retailers. In addition, early order commitment by the retailers is found to be beneficial to the supplier and retailers in reducing their total cost.

Abstract:Supply chain (SC) has been continuously affected by the epidemic and political situation, which has greatly impacted the SC disruption risk management. This situation evokes attention to control the SC inventory management under ripple effect. In addition, the need for supplier selection and disruption risk management can affect the SC inventory management over the planning time horizon. However, most existing works focus on inventory management, supplier selection, and disruption risk assessment separately. This work investigate an integrated inventory management, supplier selection, and disruption risk assessment under ripple effect. For the problem, a novel mixed-integer optimal control blended with dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) is formulated. The mixed-integer optimal control, proposed by Sager (2005), can portray the dynamic process consisting of continuous and discrete control variables. The DBN is applied to establish probabilistic relationships among SC participants, and to evaluate the disruption risk of the manufacturer. Two performance indexes are proposed to minimize the total cost and the disrupted probability for the manufacturer simultaneously. Then, a solution method is established to solve the problem, and an illustrative example is presented to demonstrate the proposed method.

Abstract:Unforeseen events can interrupt the operational process and have a negative impact on the chemical supply chain transportation (CSCT) system. A number of research studies have addressed the risk management issues in chemical supply chain (CSC) or CSCT. However, most of the existing methodologies lack inbuilt and practical techniques that take into consideration the complex interactions and dynamic feedback effects, which can significantly affect the reliability of risk management outcomes. This paper suggests a novel modelling and simulation method to address the dynamic risks effects in the CSCT, especially the consideration of time-dependent system behaviour in different operational conditions. Furthermore, the flexibility of the model modification is adapted to enhance the practice in risk mitigation. A transparent decision support tool is provided to compare the outcomes of different risk mitigation processes, which offers decision makers an alternative CSCRM mitigation package.

Abstract:Inventory management is a fundamental challenge in supply chain management. The challenge is compounded when the associated products have unpredictable demands. This study proposes an innovative optimization approach combining system-dynamic Monte-Carlo simulation and Bayesian optimization. The proposed algorithm is tested with a real-life, unpredictable demand dataset to find the optimal stock to meet the business objective. The findings show a considerable improvement in inventory policy. This information is helpful for supply chain analytics decision-making, which increases productivity and profitability. This study further adds sensitivity analysis, considering the variation in demand and expected output in profit percentage. This paper makes a substantial contribution by presenting a simple yet robust approach to addressing the fundamental difficulty of inventory management in a dynamic business environment.

Abstract:Abstract This paper develops a supply chain (SC) model by integrating raw material ordering and production planning, and production capacity decisions based upon two case studies in manufacturing firms. Multiple types of uncertainties are considered; including: time-related uncertainty (that exists in lead-time and delay) and quantity-related uncertainty (that exists in information and material flows). The SC model consists of several sub-models, which are first formulated mathematically. Simulation (simulation-based stochastic approximation) and genetic algorithm tools are then developed to evaluate several non-parameterised strategies and optimise two parameterised strategies. Experiments are conducted to contrast these strategies, quantify their relative performance, and illustrate the value of information and the impact of uncertainties. These case studies provide useful insights into understanding to what degree the integrated planning model including production capacity decisions could benefit economically in different scenarios, which types of data should be shared, and how these data could be utilised to achieve a better SC system. This study provides insights for small and middle-sized firm management to make better decisions regarding production capacity issues with respect to external uncertainty and/or disruptions; e.g. trade wars and pandemics.

Abstract:Working capital management (WCM) seeks to improve the efficiency of a firm’s operation through managing its inventory, accounts receivable, and accounts payable. Supply chain networks composed of various entities, e.g. supplier, manufacturer, which coordinate in order to deliver the finished product to the customer at the right time. The average days that it takes for a company to convert a dollar invested in raw material into a dollar collected from customer is defined as cash conversion cycle (CCC). A low CCC implies that the company has lower financial cost to fund its business operation. It goes without saying that, all firms are willing to decrease their financial cost through diminishing CCC, however minimization of the CCC for the supply chain echelons are in conflict, as one firm’s payable period is another firm’s receivable period. In this paper, a simulation- based optimization (SBO) model is developed to make trade-offs between conflicting cash conversion cycle minimizations for supply chain members through finding optimal values to the financial and inventory decisions parameters. The results indicated that CCC of the supply chain entities can be decreased significantly by employing optimal values of inventory and financial decisions parameters.

Abstract:This paper presents some analytical results on production and order dynamics in the context of a discrete-time VMI supply chain system composed of one retailer and one manufacturer. We firstly derive the lower bound and upper bound on the range of inventory fluctuations for the retailer under unknown demand. We prove that the production fluctuations can be interestingly smoothed and stabilized independent of the delivery frequency of the manufacturer used to satisfy the retailer’s demand, even if the retailer subsystem is unstable. The sufficient and necessary stability condition for the whole supply chain system is obtained. To further explore the production fluctuation problem, the bullwhip effect under unknown demand is explored based on a transfer function model with the purpose of disclosing the influences of parameters on production fluctuations. Finally, simulation experiments are used to validate the theoretical results with respect to inventory and production fluctuations.
