Abstract:The layout of a new instrument designed to study the interaction of highly charged ions with surfaces, which consists of an ion source, a beamline including charge separation and a target chamber, is presented here. By varying the charge state and impact velocity of the projectiles separately, the dissipation of potential and kinetic energy at or below the surface can be studied independently. The target chamber offers the use of tunable metal-insulator-metal devices as detectors for internal electronic excitation, a timeof-flight system to study the impact induced particle emission and the possibility to transfer samples in situ to a UHV scanning probe microscope. Samples and detectors can be prepared in situ as well. As a first example data on graphene layers on SrTiO3 which have been irradiated with Xe36+ are presented. Abstract:Cross section, being amongst the most important parameter in describing atomic collision processes, can point towards the relevant reaction mechanisms and also have been used as key physical quantities for checking many-body theories [1]. On the other hand, cross sections for the interaction between ions and atoms play an important role in understanding astrophysical plasmas and fusion plasma diagnostics. However, due to the complicated collisional processes and high costs involved in experimental measurements, cross sections for highly charge ions interacting with atoms/molecules are still limited. We start to systematic study of the interactions between ions and atoms/molecules based on the highly charged ion collision platforms Shanghai [2]. Using a reaction microscope, the three dimension momenta of the projectile ions, the recoil ions and the free electrons can be measured in multi-coincidence for the interaction of ions with atoms/molecules. Then both the transfer ionization cross sections and state-selective differential cross sections can be deduced, and the fragmentation mechanism of molecular ions also can be analyzed with the three dimensional momentum measurement. At the same time, Base on time-dependent density functional theory non-adiabatically coupling with molecular dynamics, we investigated the ionatom/molecule collision processes. Aiming at manyelectron systems with large spacial scale, we proposed an approximate method to extract the electron capture cross sections, avoiding explicit dependence on the final scattering wave functions. To demonstrate the reliability of the method, we reconstructed the electron capture and ionization cross sections in N2 system in collision with proton [3]. The results agree reasonably well with the experimental data and semi-empirical results in the keV energies. In this report, I will first introduce the experimental facilities for highly charged ion colliding with atoms and molecules, then present some new result. Abstract:The charge states of Cs ions/atoms scattered from Cs/W(110) or sputtered from Cs/Al surfaces have been calculated as a function of the work function and the temperature of the surface in terms of the time-dependent Newns-Anderson quantum model with the intra-atomic Coulomb interaction. The calculated results are in good agreement with the experimental data. Furthermore, the probabilities of charge states of the moving Cs ions/atoms approaching and leaving the surface are demonstrated.

Abstract:Electron beam ion traps allow studies of slow highly charged ion transmission through freestanding 2D materials as an universal testbed for surface science under extreme conditions. Here we review recent studies on charge exchange of highly charged ions in 2D materials. Since the interaction time with these atomically thin materials is limited to only a few femtoseconds, an indirect timing information will be gained. We will therefore discuss the interaction separated in three participating time regimes: energy deposition (charge exchange), energy release (secondary particle emission), and energy retention (material modification).

Abstract:We present a detailed investigation of the spectral properties and photoionization of highly charged ions subjected to warm- and hot-dense plasma environments. A unified framework, based on the finite-temperature orbital-free density functional theory, is adopted to describe (warm- and hot-dense) plasma screening effects on the nucleus-electron interaction. Self-consistent solving the coupled radial Diarc equations for both bound and continuum wave functions is used through the model, EPPP, we developed, to account the relativistic and plasma shielding effects, which is based on the flexible atomic code. The key features of the proposed model are the capacities to systematically include gradient corrections and exchange-correlation effects. Additionally, numerical tests are conducted to validate the accuracy and stability of the model. The transition energies, radiative transition parameters, ionization potentials, and photoionization (radiation recombination) cross sections of an exemplary ion Al-12(+) are studied under finite temperature and density conditions. The present work offers an insight into electron screening of ions and is expected to be beneficial for plasma modeling. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Assuming rectilinear trajectories for the projectile into a solid surface, a specific expression for the "energy window" of the driving atoms in a monolayer has been derived for different ion-target systems, in which the atomic displacements occur primarily in the surface layer, while the subsurface layer is kept intact. The results obtained here are in good agreement with Brice et al.'s numerical estimations and close to experimental data for ion beam assisted depositions.

Abstract:Proton emission, a decay, and cluster radioactivity play an important role in nuclear physics. We show that high-frequency alternative electric fields could deform Coulomb barriers that trap the charged particle, and raise the possibility of speeding up charged particle emissions. They could also cause anisotropic effects in charged particle emissions, and introduce additional terms in the Geiger-Nuttall laws. Our study may further suggest that, for proton emitters like Ir-166, when the electric field is strong, the dominant decay mode could be changed from a decay to proton emission. As high-frequency alternative electric fields correspond to high-frequency laser fields in the dipole approximation, our study could be viewed as a benchmark for future theoretical studies of charged particle emissions in realistic laser fields. Abstract:In the past three decades, the development of nuclear physics facilities for fundamental and applied science purposes has required an increasing current of multicharged ion beams. Multiple ionization implies the formation of dense and energetic plasmas, which, in turn, requires specific plasma trapping configurations. Two types of ion source have been able to produce very high charge states in a reliable and reproducible way: electron beam ion sources (EBIS) and electron cyclotron resonance ion sources (ECRIS). Multiple ionization is also obtained in laser-generated plasmas (laser ion sources (LIS)), where the high-energy electrons and the extremely high electron density allow step-by-step ionization, but the reproducibility is poor. This chapter discusses the atomic physics background at the basis of the production of highly charged ions and describes the scientific and technological features of the most advanced ion sources. Particular attention is paid to ECRIS and the latest developments, since they now represent the most effective and reliable machines for modern accelerators.

Abstract:Spacecrafts face various environmental risks in their working durations, thereinto, surface charging, which may result in abnormal operation of devices, is a typical detrimental effect and deserves to be deeply investigated, especially the charging process under various electron energy distributions. In this work, aiming to reveal the evolution process of surface charging in detail, we establish an approach for predicting surface potential under electron irradiation by considering the electron emission process. Mathematical relationships for the dependence of surface charging on the secondary electron yield properties of dielectric surfaces are established. The dynamic process of surface potential evolution is calculated for MgO and Al 2 O 3 when the energy variation of incident electrons obeys uniform distribution, Gaussian distribution, and Maxwell distribution. By analyzing the dynamic equilibrium process of electron incidence/exit in the positively/negatively charged cases, the effect of electron energy on equilibrium surface potential and equilibrium time are quantitatively calculated. It is found that the surface potential will be a dozen volts when the surface is positively charged, surface charging of this magnitude does not have a noticeable effect, and the equilibrium time is short (several microseconds). However, the surface potential may reach very high levels (thousands of volts) leading to breakdowns when the dielectric surface is negatively charged, and its equilibrium time is 3 to 4 orders of magnitude higher than the positively charged case. Via calculating the surface potential under various incident distributions, we acquire the dynamic evolution process of surface potential evolution under different energy distributions, and find its consequence shows a similar tendency for the situation of constant energy irradiation. This work digs into the mechanism of surface charging under various irradiation situations, which makes sense for further works involving surface charging induced by electron irradiation with multiple energy distributions.

Abstract:The irradiation with highly energetic (MeV–GeV) heavy ions can produce modifications to the properties of different materials. Among the observed effects, fabrication of nanostructures in different materials surfaces was demonstrated. Recently, slow (eV–keV) highly charged ions (HCIs) were successfully utilized for the fabrication of similar surface nanostructures in various solids. However, HCI exhibits unique features by altering only the upper most surface layers without modifying the deeper layers, which cannot be avoided for MeV–GeV heavy ions. Based on both the material properties and ion parameters (charge state, kinetic energy, potential energy, etc.), surface structures of various geometries (hillocks, caldera-like, pits) and sizes were obtained. This paper reviews the research progress of surface engineering by HCI and the available theoretical models for understanding the creation mechanisms of the formed nanostructures.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of high-energy sources, namely, high-energy plasma pulses and high-energy electron beam pulses, on materials in the form of layer through separate and combined exposures. Experimental setups utilizing a Rod Plasma Injector (RPI) and an electron gun were employed for irradiation tests. The studies involved pre- and post-treatment analysis of morphology, chemical, and phase composition using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction measurements. Surface modifications under different exposure conditions were characterized, revealing that both sources induced significant alterations in surface composition and crystal structure. These interactions result in a more uniform chemical composition, reduced surface roughness, and a shift from an amorphous phase to a nanocrystalline or amorphous-nanocrystalline state. The results underscore the potential of high-energy sources for efficient surface engineering, offering opportunities for customized material surface modifications through meticulous adjustment of these generation parameters.

Abstract:After the commissioning of the Freiburg electron beam ion trap, experiments on dielectronic recombination of the low-lying resonances in He-like Ar16+ have been carried out at high resolution. Forbidden transitions (“coronal lines”) of highly charged argon ions in the optical range have been measured with an accuracy around 1 ppm. Ions extracted from FreEBIT have been used to perform collision experiments using the Cold Target Recoil-Ion Momentum Spectroscopy (COLTRIMS) technique.

Abstract:Spectra in the extreme ultraviolet range from 107 to 353 Å emitted from Fe ions in various ionization stages have been observed at the Heidelberg electron beam ion trap (EBIT) with a flat-field grating spectrometer. A series of transition lines and their intensities have been analyzed and compared with collisional-radiative simulations. The present collisional-radiative model reproduces well the relative line intensities and facilitates line identification of ions produced in the EBIT. The polarization effect on the line intensities resulting from nonthermal unidirectional electron impact was explored and found to be significant (up to 24%) for a few transition lines. Based upon the observed line intensities, relative charge state distributions (CSD) of ions were determined, which peaked at Fe23+ tailing toward lower charge states. Another simulation on ion charge distributions including the ionization and electron capture processes generated CSDs which are in general agreement with the measurements. By observing intensity ratios of specific lines from levels collisionally populated directly from the ground state and those starting from the metastable levels of Fe xxi, Fe x and other ionic states, the effective electron densities were extracted and found to depend on the ionic charge. Furthermore, it was found that the overlap of the ion cloud with the electron beam estimated from the effective electron densities strongly depends on the charge state of the ion considered, i.e. under the same EBIT conditions, higher charge ions show less expansion in the radial direction.

Unusual charge exchange by swift heavy ions at solid surfaces

Abstract:We have employed x-ray spectroscopy to probe the charge changing process only in the bulk of the foil when swift heavy ions pass through it. In contrast, the electromagnetic methods take into account integral effect of the charge changing process in the bulk as well as the charge exchange phenomenon at the surface of the foil. Thus, the difference between the mean charge states so measured from the two methods disentangles the charge exchange phenomenon at the surface from the charge changing process in the bulk and, provides opportunities to refine the understanding of ion-surface interactions. Very surprisingly, up to tens of electrons per event participate in the charge exchange phenomenon during swift heavy ion-surface interactions. This finding has been validated with a series of experiments using several ions (z = 22-35) in the energy range of 1.5-3.0 MeV/u and also verified theoretically with Fermi-gas model. Interestingly, such unusual charge exchange phenomenon could play significant role in x-ray emission of many astrophysical environments, infrared emission bands from range of environments in galaxies, accelerator physics, ion energy losses in solids, heavy ion cancer treatments, inner shell ionization by heavy ions, and surface modifications in nano scale.

Abstract:The cold emission of particles from surfaces under intense electric fields is a process which underpins a variety of applications including atom probe tomography (APT), an analytical microscopy technique with near-atomic spatial resolution. Increasingly relying on fast laser pulsing to trigger the emission, APT experiments often incorporate the detection of molecular ions emitted from the specimen, in particular from covalently or ionically bonded materials. Notably, it has been proposed that neutral molecules can also be emitted during this process. However, this remains a contentious issue. To investigate the validity of this hypothesis, a careful review of the literature is combined with the development of new methods to treat experimental APT data, the modelling of ion trajectories, and the application of density-functional theory (DFT) simulations to derive molecular ion energetics. It is shown that the direct thermal emission of neutral molecules is extremely unlikely. However, neutrals can still be formed in the course of an APT experiment by dissociation of metastable molecular ions.

Abstract:The irradiation with fast ions with kinetic energies of > 10 MeV leads to the deposition of a high amount of energy along their trajectory (up to several ten keV/nm). The energy is mainly transferred to the electronic subsystem and induces different secondary processes of excitations which result in significant material modifications. A new setup to study these ion induced effects on surfaces will be described in this paper. The setup combines a variable irradiation chamber with different techniques of surface characterizations like scanning probe microscopy, time-of-flight secondary ion and neutral mass spectrometry, as well as low energy electron diffraction under ultra high vacuum conditions, and is mounted at a beamline of the universal linear accelerator (UNILAC) of the GSI facility in Darmstadt, Germany. Here, samples can be irradiated with high-energy ions with a total kinetic energy up to several GeVs under different angles of incidence. Our setup enables the preparation and in-situ analysis of different types of sample systems ranging from metals to insulators. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry enables us to study the chemical composition of the surface, while scanning probe microscopy allows a detailed view into the local electrical and morphological conditions of the sample surface down to atomic scales. With the new setup particle emission during irradiation as well as persistent modifications of the surface after irradiation can thus be studied. We present first data obtained with the new setup, including a novel measuring protocol for time-of-flight mass spectrometry with the GSI UNILAC accelerator.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the energy loss of highly charged ions interacting with various tungsten surfaces. The analysis primarily focuses on elucidating the impact of electron density distributions on energy loss of ions. Furthermore, we explore the correlation between surface azimuthal angles and energy loss under both uniform and inhomogeneous electron density distributions. Utilizing the classical over-the-barrier model (COBM), simulations involving trajectory calculations, energy loss, charge-exchange processes, and surface electron distributions, etc., were performed. Remarkably, the significant influence of axial channeling of surfaces on ion energy loss is observed. For the comparison of ion energy loss under uniform and inhomogeneous electron density distributions, the results reveal a more pronounced effect of electron density inhomogeneity on ion energy loss at higher energy-loss values. Additionally, the calculated energy-loss spectra of Ar 16+ ions grazing on graphite surfaces show reasonable agreement with experimental data. These findings are crucial for understanding the surface structure of crystals.

Abstract:The charge states of sputtered cesium and oxygen ions/atoms from metal surfaces have been discussed with the time-dependent Newns-Anderson model. The final charge state distribution has been calculated as a function of work function of the surfaces. The calculated results fit the experimental data well. Besides, the dependence of the final charge states of the sputtered oxygen particles on the surface temperature is also predicted.

Abstract:MeV-range ions generated in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high-energy-density physics experiments carry a wealth of information, including fusion reaction yield, rate, and spatial emission profile; implosion areal density; electron temperature and mix; and electric and magnetic fields. Here, the principles of how this information is obtained from data and the charged particle diagnostic suite currently available at the major US ICF facilities for making the measurements are reviewed. Time-integrating instruments using image plate, radiochromic film, and/or CR-39 detectors in different configurations for ion counting, spectroscopy, or emission profile measurements are described, along with time-resolving detectors using chemical vapor deposited diamonds coupled to oscilloscopes or scintillators coupled to streak cameras for measuring the timing of ion emission. A brief description of charged-particle radiography setups for probing subject plasma experiments is also given. The goal of the paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of available capabilities, with reference to resources where more detailed information can be found.
