Abstract:Simulation technology is a comprehensive method for predicting possible outcomes or evaluating decision-making effects by establishing computer models of complex systems and simulating their behavior and evolution processes. This paper systematically reviews the development history, main methods, application fields, challenges, and future trends of simulation technology. Firstly, the article defines the connotation of simulation technology and expounds its important value in military, business, public policy, and other fields. Secondly, the article traces the development of simulation technology from its origins in World War II to the present, summarizing key milestones such as modeling languages, graphical interfaces, distributed interaction, and cloud computing. Thirdly, the article introduces the main modeling paradigms, such as system dynamics, discrete events, and agents, as well as compound modeling methods like continuous-discrete hybrid and multi-agent-macro hybrid. Meanwhile, the article also demonstrates typical applications of simulation in defense, business, government, engineering, healthcare, and other fields, using case studies in military operations, consumer markets, macroeconomics, traffic management, and disease spread. Based on an analysis of existing technical challenges, practical dilemmas, and methodological controversies, the article finally outlines the development prospects of simulation technology in the directions of large-scale high-performance computing, data-driven modeling, human-computer hybrid, cognitive-behavioral simulation, and cross-domain coupling. The article points out that simulation is accelerating its integration with artificial intelligence, big data, digital twins, and other technologies, evolving towards more intelligent, real-time, and immersive directions, and will become an indispensable enabling technology in the digital era. Strengthening theoretical innovation and application expansion of simulation is of great significance for enhancing national scientific and technological strength and comprehensive competitiveness.

Abstract:Simulation models are an absolute necessity in the human and social sciences, which can only very exceptionally use experimental science methods to construct their knowledge. Models enable the simulation of social processes by replacing the complex interplay of individual and collective actions and reactions with simpler mathematical or computer mechanisms, making it easier to understand the relationships between the causes and the consequences of these interactions and to make predictions. As the formalism of mathematical models offering analytical solutions is often not suitable for representing social complexity, more and more agent-based computer models are being used. For a long time, the limited computing capacities of computers have hampered programming models that would take into account the interactions between large numbers of geographically located entities (persons or territories). In principle, these models should inform the conditions for the emergence of certain patterns defined at a macro-geographic level from the interactions occurring at a micro-geographic level, in systems whose behaviors are too complex to be understood directly by a human brain. Moreover, it is also necessary to analyze the dynamic behavior of these models with nonlinear feedback effects and verify that they produce plausible results at all stages of their simulation. This essential work of exploring the dynamics of modeled systems remained in its infancy until the late 2010s. Since then, algorithms combining more sophisticated methods, including genetic algorithms and the use of distributed intensive computing, have made it possible to make a significant qualitative leap forward in the exploration and validation of models. The result is an epistemological turn for the human and social sciences, as indicated by the latest applications realized with the help of the OpenMOLE platform presented here.

Abstract:During the past half-century simulation has advanced as a tool of choice for operational systems analysis. The advances in technology have stimulated new products and new environments without software standards or methodological commonality. Each new simulation language or product offers its own unique set of features and capabilities. Yet these simulation products are the evolution of research, development, and application. In this paper we interpret the historical development of simulation modeling. In our view simulation modeling is that part of the simulation problem-solving process that focuses on the development of the model. It is the interpretation of a real production (or service) problem in terms of a simulation language capable of performing a simulation of that real-world process. While “interpretation” is in the “eyes of the beholder” (namely us) there are some historical viewpoints and methods that influence the design of the simulation model.

Abstract:Simulation modelling is a fascinating research field. The techniques and tools of simulation modelling have been used to research and investigate the behaviour of various systems in a wide range of areas such as commerce, computer networks, defence, health, manufacturing and transportation. Indeed, the study of the use of these techniques and tools, and the development of new forms of these, are a rich source of research in their own right. Simulation modelling is about to reach the 50th anniversary of the development of GSP (General Simulation Program), the first simulation modelling language (Tocher and Owen, 1960). There have been several historical accounts of simulation modelling research. To complement these, we have performed a review of the recent history of simulation modelling. This study targeted three leading journals dedicated to this field. These are the ACM Transactions of Modeling and Computer Simulation, Simulation: Transactions of The Society for Modeling and Simulation International and Simulation Modelling Practice and Theory (formerly Simulation Practice and Theory). The study covered the first 6 years of this century (2000–2005) and included 576 papers. The key observation of this work was the relative lack of ‘real world’ involvement in simulation modelling research and an even greater lack of evidence of ‘real world’ benefit, arguably very alarming outcomes for an applied field. To further investigate this observation two additional surveys were carried out, one to study if real world papers appeared in the more widely known OR/MS literature (837 papers in 12 journals) and one to study if such papers appeared in Manufacturing and Logistics, an application area closely associated with simulation modelling (1077 papers in 10 journals). The results of these surveys confirmed our observations. We ask if this is the natural evolution of a field that has existed for half a century or an indication of a worrying problem? This paper reports on our findings and discusses whether or not simulation modelling research urgently needs to face a ‘reality check.’

Abstract:The ubiquitous presence of computer simulations in all kinds of research areas evidence their role as the new driving force for the advancement of science and engineering research. Nothing seems to escape the image of success that computer simulations project onto the research community and the general public. One simple way to illustrate this consists of asking ourselves how would contemporary science and engineering look like without the use of computer simulations. The answer would certainly diverge from the current image we have of scientific and engineering research. As much as computer simulations are successful, they are also methods that fail in their purpose of inquiring about the world; and as much as researchers make use of them, computer simulations raise important questions that are at the heart of contemporary science and engineering practice. In this respect, computer simulations make a fantastic subject of research for the natural sciences, the social sciences, engineering and, as in our case, also for philosophy. Complex System Modeling and Simulation

Abstract:The research on complex systems is different from that on general systems because the former must consider self-organization, emergence, uncertainty, predetermination, and evolution. As an important method to transform the world, a simulation is one of the most important skills to discover complex systems. In this study, we provide a survey on complex systems and their simulation methods. Initially, the development history of complex system research is summarized from two main lines. Then, the eight common characteristics of the most complex systems are presented. Furthermore, the simulation methods of complex systems are introduced in detail from four aspects, namely, meta-synthesis methods, complex networks, intelligent technologies, and other methods. From the overall point of view, intelligent technologies are the driving force, and complex networks are the advanced structure. Meta-synthesis methods are the integration strategy, and other methods are the supplements. In addition, we show three complex system simulation examples: digital reactor simulation, simulation of a logistics system in the industrial site, and crowd evacuation simulation. The examples show that a simulation is a useful means and an important method in complex system research. Finally, the future development prospects for complex systems and their simulation methods are suggested.

Abstract:SIMULATION, Volume 100, Issue 12, Page 1281-1295, December 2024. The notion of (self-)adaptation, according to J. Holland (1975), describes the process of iterative refinement of an entity's behavior or structure to improve its performance in its environment. We argue that the potential role of (self-)adaptive simulation models has not been sufficiently acknowledged in the past. A focus on adaptive simulation will likely propel methodological advances in modeling and simulation and digital twinning, increasing its impact on solving urgent real-world problems. Therefore, we will review methods for including adaptation as part of or within simulation models and consequently discuss how simulation models themselves may become the subject of adaptation within and across simulation studies. We will identify different motivations for and types of adaptations within simulation studies by analyzing a family of simulation models. The need to automatically conduct various types of adaptations increases with the importance of online adaptations, e.g. as encountered in digital twins. Further methodological developments in unambiguously representing and intelligently processing the various knowledge sources used in simulation studies, domain-specific languages, analysis methods, self-adaptive software, and, last but not least, model learning are needed. Combining the adaptation within and of simulation models, we arrive at the vision of self-adaptive models, which are less subject to adaptation but become the central actors in their adaptation.

Searching for Models for Psychological Science: A Possible Contribution of Simulation

Abstract:The problem of the theoretical precariousness of psychology requires defining, at an epistemological level, its concepts and languages and the use of models for finding core concepts and building more or less 'hard' theories. After reviewing some main aims and models of psychology, and comparing them with those of other sciences, the commentary deals with the possibility of simulating life as a tool for building evolutionary psychological models. In particular, evolutionary and developmental robotics and the evo-devo models can simulate the simultaneous adaptation effects of the phylogenetic and ontogenetic development of the embodied mind in response to the characteristics of the environment. The simulation using Artificial Intelligence and robotics could contribute significantly to the definition, experimentation, and validation of the models that make up the theories of psychology in its different domains, enhancing the interdisciplinarity with other sciences that study the same objects. Further studies, both epistemological and empirical, are suggested to confirm whether this evo-devo approach can be integrated with "evolutionary psychology" and contribute to a unifying meta-theory of psychological science.

Abstract:The question "What is real?" can be traced back to the shadows in Plato's cave. Two thousand years later, Rene Descartes lacked knowledge about arguing against an evil deceiver feeding us the illusion of sensation. Descartes' epistemological concept later led to various theories of sensory experiences. The concept of "illusionism", proposing that even the very conscious experience we have is an illusion, is not only a red-pill scenario found in the 1999 science fiction movie "The Matrix" but is also a philosophical concept promoted by modern tinkers, most prominently by Daniel Dennett. Reflection upon a possible simulation and our perceived reality was beautifully visualized in "The Matrix", bringing the old ideas of Descartes to coffee houses around the world. Irish philosopher Bishop Berkeley was the father of what was later coined as "subjective idealism", basically stating that "what you perceive is real". With the advent of quantum technologies based on the control of individual fundamental particles, the question of whether our universe is a simulation isn't just intriguing. Our ever-advancing understanding of fundamental physical processes will likely lead us to build quantum computers utilizing quantum effects for simulating nature quantum-mechanically in all complexity, as famously envisioned by Richard Feynman. In this article, we outline constraints on the limits of computability and predictability in/of the universe, which we then use to design experiments allowing for first conclusions as to whether we participate in a simulation chain. Eventually, in a simulation in which the computer simulating a universe is governed by the same physical laws as the simulation, the exhaustion of computational resources will halt all simulations down the simulation chain unless an external programmer intervenes, which we may be able to observe.

Abstract:In this article,I introduce one of the main approaches to mindreading in everyday life.I make clear the background that simulation theory came up as the opposite of Theory Theory,the three kinds of simulation,several groups of experimental evidences which stand for Simulation Theory,and some defensive discourses against the doubts from the opposers.All of those show that there are considerable differences between mindreading and 'matter-reading',there are many advantages of explanation for Simulation Theory,but it is still impossible to kick all of the theory factor out of the game of mindreading,it is better to combine the two or even more approaches together.

While these simulations provide high-fidelity models, they are poorly suited for inference and lead to challenging inverse problems. We review the rapidly developing field of simulation-based inference and identify the forces giving additional momentum to the field. Finally, we describe how the frontier is expanding so that a broad audience can appreciate the profound influence these developments may have on science.
