Abstract:This study investigated hydrothermal humification of corn straw acid hydrolysis residue with biogas slurry impregnation, aiming at producing water-soluble artificial humic acid fertilizer for fertilizer application and soil remediation. Hydrothermal humification parameters, including potassium hydroxide concentration (1-3 mol/L), retention time (2-6 h), and temperature (140-180 °C), were investigated using water as the liquid phase. The selected hydrothermal humification condition was 1.5 mol/L potassium hydroxide at 180 °C for 4 h. Moreover, biogas slurry impregnation (0-30 days) was evaluated to improve humic acid yield without introducing additional chemicals or energy input. Biogas slurry as the liquid phase increased the humic acid production by 73.24% with 5 days of impregnation compared to the control due to the alkalinity. The humic acid concentration was sufficient for China's national standard of water-soluble humic acid fertilizers in such conditions. The organic components in biogas slurry were involved in artificial humification as a precursor, forming C-N bonds with humic acid. The product with fortified nitrogen-containing functional groups enhanced the nutrient slow-release characteristics and water retention capabilities. The pot experiment further confirmed that artificial humic acid prepared in this study not only promoted the growth of plants but also achieved soil remediation.

Abstract:Humic substance is vital for soil fertility and has wide applications such as soil remediation agents, organic fertilizer and adsorbents. The results of pH effect on artificial humic acids (AHAs) production demonstrated that acid hydrothermal conditions are favorable for biomass waste dissolution and formation of AHA precursors such as saccharides, furans, organic acids and phenols; whereas alkaline hydrothermal conditions are suitable for AHAs production from these precursors. Enhanced humification from biomass waste with a combined acid - alkaline hydrothermal process was proposed. The solid product known as hydrochar was reduced to only 5 wt% after this process indicating the significant improvement of dissolution and transformation. The AHAs concentration of 28.28 +/- 0.98 wt% obtained from corn stalk was the highest yield so far, 10 times higher than ever reported. The carbon flow analysis indicated that the selectivity of AHA-C was 43.2% of the initial carbon in corn stalk. Our study provides a new way of mass production of AHAs in short period, which has great potential for industry application.
Extraction and Utilization of Humic Acid from Sewage Sludge

Abstract:A method was developed to produce liquid humic fertilizer from dewatered, activated sludge. The sludge was dissolved with 0.2 mol/L NaOH, stirred slowly for 24 h, and then centrifuged. The supernatant was separated through an inorganic ultrafiltration membrane with a relative molecular mass cutoff of 1 000. The residual sludge was dewatered after neutralization. 46% of the organic substances in the sludge were dissolved, with humic acid accounting for 28% of the mass. After being concentrated 20 fold, the solution meets the standard humic acid and heavy metal requirements for liquid fertilizers. The permeated solution contains about 80% of the NaOH feeding. The method reduces the sludge by a mass ratio of 55%, and reduces the sludge water mass content from 80% to 70%. The resulting concentrated humic solution can be used for producing complex fertilizers.

The application of humic acid fertilizer in the soil can not only optimize the soil structure and increase the utilization rate of fertilizers, but also promote the growth of crops, thereby achieving the effect of increasing yield and income. In the repair of contaminated soil, humic acid fertilizers can fix heavy metals and degrade organic pollutants. Based on this, in order to promote the efficient application of humic acid fertilizers in soil, the application of humic acid fertilizers in soil improvement and remediation of contaminated soil was explored.

Abstract:Currently, conversion of coal into alternative fuel and non-fuel valuable products is in demand and growing interest. In the present study, humic acid was extracted from two different ranks of coal, i.e., low rank and high rank (lignite and bituminous), through chemical pretreatment by nitric acid. Samples of lignite and bituminous coal were subjected to nitric acid oxidation followed by extraction using KOH and NaOH gravimetric techniques. The chemical pretreatment of both types of coal led to enhanced yields of humic acid from 21.15% to 57.8% for lignite low-rank coal and 11.6% to 49.6% bituminous high rank coal. The derived humic acid from native coal and nitric acid treated coal was analyzed using elemental analysis, E4/E6 ratio of absorbance at 465 nm and 665 nm using UV-Visible spectrophotometry and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy FTIR. The chemical characteristics of coal treated with nitric acid have shown increased molecular weight and improved aromaticity with more oxygen and nitrogen and lower C, H, and sulphur content. The E4/E6 ratio of nitric acid-treated low and high ranks of coal was high. The FTIR spectroscopic data of nitric acid-treated lignite coal indicates an intensive peak of carboxyl group at 2981.84 cm−1, while bituminous coal was shown in cooperation with the N-H group at 2923.04 cm−1. SEM was performed to detect the morphological changes that happen after producing humic acid from HNO3 treatment and native coal. The humic acid produced from HNO3 treated coal had shown clear morphological changes and some deformations on the surface. SEM-EDS detected the major elements, such as nitrogen, in treated humic acid that were absent in raw coal humic acid. Hence, the produced humic acid through HNO3 oxidation showed a more significant number of humic materials with improved efficiency as compared to native coal. This obtained humic acid can be made bioactive for agriculture purposes, i.e., for soil enrichment and improvement in growth conditions of plants and development of green energy solutions.

Abstract:In this study, artificial humic acid (AHA) was produced from rice straw at room temperature. The response surface methodology was used to investigate the response of artificial humic acid to time, liquid-solid ratio, and KOH concentration. The optimal reaction conditions were determined: reaction time of 2 h, liquid-solid ratio of 6, and KOH concentration of 1.5 mol/L. The artificial humic acid content under these conditions was 32.29 g/L, which satisfied the Chinese agricultural industry standard for water-soluble humic acid fertilizers (humic acid content ≥30 g/L). Compared with chemical fertilizers, artificial humic acid fertilizer promoted chard growth and increased soil organic matter and humic acid. The stability of artificial humic acid was better, with a retention rate of 60.47 % in the soil. Water-soluble humic acid fertilizer also promoted chard growth by increasing the relative abundance of growth-promoting bacteria such as Glutamicibacter and Pseudomonas and, as well as growth-promoting fungi such as Mortierella . The application of water-soluble humic acid fertilizers has implications for both soil improvement and the reduction of agricultural carbon emissions.

Abstract:<p>A novel preparation protocol for synthetic, look-a-like humic substances (i.e., fulvic and humic acids) simulating geochemical processes through hydrothermal reaction is presented, with crude waste biomass as an omnipresent and universal precursor. The chemical nature of the organic scaffold and the type and abundance of oxygen-containing functional groups of the synthetic humic substances (A-FA and A-HA) are revealed by a series of examinations. Results from EA, XPS analyze, FTIR spectra and NMR technology matched well each other, suggesting high similarity on chemical structure (abundant aromatic frameworks) and contents (e.g. N and S elements) in both humic acids. Pyrolysis-gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) analysis is employed on the organic structure and is directly compared to extracted natural humic matter from black soils (Harbin, China). Dehydrated carbohydrates and their condensates with low molecular weight that are rich in oxygen are the main structural components of the artificial fulvic acids, while aromatic structures and aliphatic side chains are almost absent. Aromatics (7.43%) and in some cases long-chain aliphatics (7.15%) are more prominent in the A-HA sample. The combination of the diverse analytical techniques not only allows a better understanding of artificial fulvic and humic acids, but also supports the high similarity to natural humic substances in structure and morphology. As the technology can be easily scaled and is comparable cheap, the as obtained products can be discussed to rehabilitate used up farm land.</p>

Abstract:Hydrochar derived from biowaste after hydrothermal treatment presents coal-like properties due to its abundant aromatic and oxygen-containing structures, having great potential for hydrothermal humic acid (HHA) production. This study investigated the correlation between hydrochar characteristics and its potential for producing HHAalk under alkaline hydrothermal conditions. The hydrochars were prepared at different hydrothermal temperatures and pH, and their chemical properties were analyzed by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The hydrochars prepared in the hydrothermal environment with high temperature (200 °C) and strong acidity (pH 0) presented a deep degree of dehydration and carbonization, achieving higher HHAalk yields (67.9 wt% and 68.8 wt%, respectively) under alkaline hydrothermal treatment than that in other trials. It ascribed that the high content of acid-insoluble component in hydrochar (i.e., lignin-derived hydrochar, HHA and humins), up to more than 90 wt%, was favorable for HHAalk production. The HHA in hydrochar can transfer into humins under high hydrothermal temperature (>180 °C) and strong hydrothermal pH (<1). The linear relationship indicated the hydrochar yield, cellulose and hemicellulose content in hydrochar were negatively correlated with HHAalk yield while the acid-insoluble component content had a positive correlation. The unsaturation degree of hydrochar was suggested as a representative indicator for evaluating the humification potential of hydrochar. This study provides scientific support for the preparation of suitable hydrochar with efficient hydrothermal humification potential.

Abstract:Acid hydrothermal treatment of biowaste is favorable for producing hydrochar and corresponding hydrothermal solution containing saccharides, furans and aromatic compounds, while the alkaline hydrothermal condition is beneficial for their humification to form hydrothermal humic acid (HHA). Herein, the humification potential of hydrochar, hydrothermal solution, and their mixture under alkaline hydrothermal conditions was compared to further reveal their contribution to HHA. The result showed the main source of HHA was hydrochar, occupying 70 wt% of total HHA yield from their mixture while hydrothermal solution only contributed 17 wt%. Moreover, the HHA that existed in hydrochar (denoted as HHAacid) was 32 wt% while the hydrochar-derived HHA obtained after alkaline hydrothermal treatment (denoted as HHAalk) increased to 65 wt%, close to that from commercial coal or lignite. The hydrochar was further separated into four components, i.e. hydrothermal fulvic acid (HFA), stable HHAacid (S-HHAacid) non-stable HHAacid (N-HHAacid) and remaining substance (RS), aiming to reveal the major pathway of the incremental HHA production under alkaline hydrothermal condition. Reactions of RS + HFA, RS + N-HHAacid and self-synthesizing of RS all contributed to the incremental HHAalk yield with the major contribution (75C%) from the first combination (RS + HFA). The pathways of alkaline hydrothermal humification of hydrochar were revealed after analyzing the molecular level structure of HHAalk by UPLC-MS. This in-depth analysis fills the knowledge gap in the mechanism of hydrothermal humification of biowaste.

Abstract:Due to the positive effect on soil structure and the influence on improving the efficiency of plant roots nutrient uptake, humic acids (HA) are widely considered for fertilizer production. Especially, it seems to be particularly promising to use them as additives in technologies of mineral fertilizer production. One of the common mineral fertilizer components, due to its good water solubility and the presence of nitrogen in two forms, is ammonium nitrate (AN). The aim of this study was to determine the influence of the humic acids extracted from peat and lignite on the thermal decomposition of HA and the thermal decomposition of ammonium nitrate and humic acids mixtures. For the quality assessment of HA, spectroscopic methods (FTIR/ATR and CP/MAS 13 C NMR) and analysis of elemental composition were used. The analysis of the spectra showed differences in the degree of humification of humic acids extracted from various raw materials. HA isolated from peat were distinguished by the presence of peptides, polysaccharides, and lignin residues. Elemental analysis showed the higher carbon and sulfur content in the extracted HA compared to the reference samples. The results of the TG-DTA-MS analysis confirmed the influence of differences in the molecular structure of humic acids, especially in the aliphatic and aromatic carbon content, on the thermal decomposition process. Total content of carboxylic and/or hydroxylic functional groups had a significant impact on the start of the decomposition temperature. Their increase visibly influenced the acceleration of the exothermic decomposition of AN.

Abstract:The purpose of the study is to examine the main methods of obtaining fertilizers and optimizing processes. Using methods of analysis, comparison, and experimentation, three main approaches to obtaining fertilizers were identified: grinding and mixing with potassium hydroxide (KOH), ultrafine grinding with chemical additives, and a complex method for processing caustobioliths. Comparative analysis of the investigated methods allowed for identifying their advantages, disadvantages, and effectiveness. The key result was the ability to determine the most effective method for producing humate-containing fertilizers from brown coal, depending on specific production conditions and requirements. The results of the study showed that the ultrafine grinding process with chemical additions, such as urea and alkali metal hydroxides, showed promising potential for creating highly effective humate-containing fertilizers from brown coal, in addition to the comparative analysis. After thorough optimization, this technique showed improved fertilizer utilization and superior plant uptake, making it a strong contender for sustainable farming methods. Nevertheless, achieving optimal results requires detailed process parameter optimization. The study underscores the importance of using brown coal in humate-containing fertilizer production as an environmentally safe and sustainable approach. The results can contribute to further development and improvement of humate-containing fertilizer production methods, promoting sustainable agriculture and increased crop productivity.

Synthesis of artificial humic acid-urea complex improves nitrogen utilization

Abstract:The inefficient use of conventional nitrogen (N) fertilizers leads to N enrichment in the soil, resulting in N loss via runoff, volatilization and leaching. While using artificial humic acid to prepare novel N fertilizer is a good choice to improve its efficiency, the high heterogeneity of artificial humic acid limits its structural analysis and utilization efficiency. To solve above problems, this work mainly carried out the fractionation experiments, melt penetration experiments and soil incubation experiments. The results revealed that four fractions with different aromatization degree and molecular weights were obtained by the newly proposed continuous dissolution method, particular in the extraction solution of pH = 3-4, which were extracted with the highest aromatization degree. Furthermore, artificial humic acid urea complex fertilizers prepared at pH = 3-4 significantly improved the release of NH4+-N by 38.32% on days 7 and NO3--N by 10.30% on days 14, compared to urea application. The highly aromatic complex fertilizer with loading of urea-N was able to supply more inorganic N to the soil on days 3-14 (low molecular weight N) and to maintain a higher N content on days 70 (highly aromatized N). This can partially offset the mineralization of readily available organic N, buffering the immobilization of inorganic N from the soil when unstable organic compounds (e.g. conventional urea) were incorporated. A-HAU3-4 addition on days 70, Proteobacteria and Actinobacteriota were found to be the dominant phylum in the soil and the relative abundance of Endophytic bacteria was increased, which was conducive to the improvement of soil N utilization efficiency and soil N sequestration. Therefore, the preparation of artificial humic urea fertilizer with high aromatization degree or low molecular weight were an effective way to improve N utilization efficiency in the initial stages of soil incubation and maintain N fixation in the later stages of soil incubation. The future application of the strategy presented by this study would have an important ecological significance for alleviating agricultural N pollution.

Abstract:Based on the different types of humic acids,including mineral-humic acid,bio-humic acid,the study compared the characteristics and the effects of difference humic acid fertilizers on plant growth and soil fertility with the chemical fertilizer and organic fertilizer. The results showed that,compared with the chemical fertilizer,the soil organic matter increased 11. 14% and 12. 03%,total N concentration in soil increased 20. 62% and 22. 26%,rapid available K concentration in soil increased 6. 02% and 9. 28%,rapid available P concentration in soil increased28. 05% and 29. 49% of the mineral-humic acid and bio-humic acid fertilizer treatment. Soil physical and chemical properties was also improved. The bio-humic acid fertilizers could achieve a better effect than humic acid and other organic fertilizer with inorganic fertilizer. The humic acid fertilizer could increase the yield of rape,and N,P,K concentration in plant. After 60 d pot experiment,the dry matter increased 9. 43% and 16. 38% of the mineral-humic acid and bio-humic acid fertilizer treatment. Compared with the organic fertilizer,humic acid had better effects on crop nutrient content. Compared with mineral-humic acid, bio-humic acids even had broad prospects in soilremediation and water purification in China,saline alkali soil improvement,for example.
Humic Acids Formation during Compositing of Plant Remnants in Presence of Calcium Carbonate and Biochar

Abstract:The investigation of the mechanisms organic matter transformation in compost organic fertilizers is an urgent task of modern soil ecology and soil chemistry. The main components of such fertilizers are newly formed, weakly humified labile humic acids (HAs). The objective of the study is to determine the mechanism of converting the newly formed HAs into the forms with increased resistance to microbiological and biochemical influences. Obtained during the plant residues decomposition, HAs were studied in the incubation experiment (0, 30, 90 days). Calcium carbonate and biochar produced by rapid pyrolysis from birch and aspen wood, at 550 °C, were used as the composting mixture compounds. Decomposed plant residues—fresh aboveground mass of clover (Trifolium pratense L.), rye (Secale cereale L.), as well as dry oat straw (Avena sativa L.) were the material used for humification. To obtain Has, 0.1 M NaOH and 0.1 M Na4P2O7 were used. Then, HAs were separated from fulvic acids (FAs) using a 0.5 M H2SO4. The amount of labile HAs (HAs1) was estimated by their content in 0.1 M NaOH. The amount of stabilized HAs (HAs2) was calculated by the difference between the HAs content in 0.1 M Na4P2O7 and 0.1 M NaOH. Preparation of HAs for elemental composition and NMR analysis was performed according to the International Humic Substances Society’s recommendations. The possibility of converting newly formed HAs into stable forms (calcium humates), whose share in the HAs composition reaches 40–50%, has been shown. However, the mechanism of HAs transformation under the studied reagent’s influence was different. In the presence of calcium carbonate, it is caused by the physicochemical processes of newly formed HAs rearrangement. However, in the presence of biochar, this is due to the humification processes’ intensification and to the increase in the aromatization degree confirmed by the increase in the optical density, as well as by the increase in carbon and oxygen proportion, and by the decrease in hydrogen proportion in HAs molecules. The understanding of HAs formation and transformation mechanisms at the early humification stages can help to optimize the methods of obtaining organic fertilizers.

Abstract:Nitrohumic acids (NHAs) are considered as promising slow-release N fertilizers. In this study, NHA was produced from six organic feedstocks, including coal, leonardite, municipal waste compost, sewage sludge, and apple and beech biochars via nitration using nitric acid. The nitration process was conducted in two ways: (i) after humic acid (HA) extraction (NHA D ), and (ii) before HA extraction (NHA ID ). The prepared NHAs were then characterized using FT-IR and CHNS analysis. Additionally, N mineralization of NHAs was investigated in a sandy loam soil sample. The FT-IR spectra showed that both methods of nitration loaded nitro (NO 2 ) groups into the HA structure. However, the CHNS analysis indicated the highest rate of N increase for NHA D (106%) and NHA ID (113%) extracted from leonardite. Moreover, on average, the total acidity and carboxylic groups of the HAs increased by 7.5% and 14.5% after the nitration processes, respectively. The highest extraction yields of NHA D (26.1%) and NHA ID (42.1%) were also obtained from leonardite. Although the extraction yield of NHA ID was on average two times higher than that of NHA D , NHA D indicated a higher soil N availability (1.4 times). We concluded that the NHA D extracted from leonardite could be considered as an alternative slow-release N fertilizer.

Abstract:Humic acid is inexpensive, and has a wide range of sources and a strong adsorption force with the surface of iron ore, and the size of its adsorption force is affected by some factors such as humic acid concentration, pH of the solution, and metal cations. The modified humic acid pellet binder (MHA) with strong adhesion and high viscosity was obtained through the separation and purification of solid wastes such as lignite and weathered coal and chemical modification treatment and successfully applied in the production process of iron ore pellets. After industrial tests, MHA can significantly improve the strength of green and dry pellets, less residue after high-temperature roasting, less metallurgical pollution, high strength of fired pellets, and can partially or completely replace bentonite.

Abstract:<p>Humic acid, as a natural organic matter, is widely distributed in surface soil, oceans, rivers, and other ecological environments throughout the whole earth ecosystem. Humic acid provides abundant organic carbon and helps to maintain a hydrated, pH and redox buffered environment hosting the soil microbiome. Humic acid is however also a largely ignored polymer material full of exciting functional properties, and its scale is enormous. This perspective article discusses its synthesis and management as a tool to tackle parts of the climate crisis as well its use in technological applications, as made by chemical conversion of agricultural side products to artificial humic acids.</p>

Abstract:In this study, response surface methodology (RSM) was adopted to investigate the optimization of process conditions for extracting humic acid (HA) from coal, aiming to enhance the yield of humic acid. Additionally, UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, TG-DTG, CP/MAS13CNMR, XPS, and molecular fluorescence were utilized to examine the properties of HAs. The extraction time significantly influenced the yield from Lishi weathered lignite, while the liquid-solid ratio had a significant impact on the yield from Wuhai weathered lignite. The interactive effect between factors did not have a significant effect on the yield. The optimal extraction conditions for Lishi humic acid (LSHA) were determined to be an extraction time of 4.4 h, NaOH concentration of 0.30 mol/L, and liquid-solid ratio of 21 mL/g, while those for Wuhai humic acid (WHHA) were 3.1 h, 0.21 mol/L, and 12 mL/g, respectively. Under these optimal conditions, the true yield values closely matched the predicted value obtained from the model optimization. Comparative analysis of the HAs revealed similarities in their chemical properties, including the degree of aromaticity, molecular weight, and distribution of functional groups. The aromaticity of WHHA was higher compared to that of LSHA. The higher hydrophilic-hydrophobic index of LSHA contributed to its relatively high biological activity compared to that of WHHA. Both humic acids belong to terrestrial humic acids. The results of the study provide a reference for further application of humic acid.

Abstract:A new composite adsorbent of sodium humate (HNa)=alpha-aluminium oxide (alpha-Al2O3) for flue gas desulfurization (FGD) was prepared using the impregnation method. Both the adsorbent of alpha-Al2O3 and HNa=alpha-Al2O3 were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive Xray spectrometer (EDS), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Desulfurization activity of the adsorbent impregnated with ammonia (NH4OH) was investigated in a fixed-bed quartz reactor. Experimental results indicate that HNa, which coats the alpha-Al2O3 fibers impregnated with HNa solution, improved the property of alpha-Al2O3 support for FGD. On the other hand, the HNa-coating on the adsorbent of HNa/alpha-Al2O3 impregnated with NH4OH played an important role in enhancing the desulfurization property of the alpha-Al2O3. Due to the strong adsorption capability of HNa, more NH4OH was adsorbed in the adsorbent of HNa/alpha-Al2O3 the longer a high sulfur dioxide (SO2) conversation rate was maintained. In addition, because the desulfurization product was a compound fertilizer consisting of ammonium sulfate [(NH4)(2)SO4], ammonium humate (HNH4), and HNa, the recycling use of alpha-Al2O3 was also easily achieved. Thus, this study can provide a new cost-effective way to remove SO2 from flue gas.
