Abstract:A simple and highly sensitive technique for determining nonlinear refractive index n2 by CW He-Ne laser beam self-action has been developed. The magnitude and sign of a new nonlinear medium, solution of jasmine tea in ethyl alcohol have been measured, the magnitude of which is 106 times larger than that of Carbondisulfide.

Abstract:We studied the nonlinear optical properties of a square split-ring structure of magnetic meta-materials and the mechanism by which a non-centrosymmetric silver structure generates the second harmonic within the near-infrared band. We also analyzed the effect of the silver structure on the second harmonic and applied the silver structure in an air cavity-silver-glass structure, which is an insulator-metal-insulator structure, for sensing. By identifying the effect of different refractive indexes on the transmission spectrum, we obtained the intrinsic relation between the refractive index and the wavelength at which the second harmonic is excited. The experimental results indicate that with the growth of the refractive index, the second harmonic has an evident red shift and that by changing the shape and split width of the silver structure, the sensitivity is significantly improved, measurement of amino acid solutions up to 1007.2 nm/RIU. This study brings new insight into the application of second harmonics with nonlinear effects in the sensing field.

Abstract:The quality of air significantly impacts both the quality of life and the health of individuals. Femtosecond laser filament-induced nonlinear spectroscopy effectively measures both aerosol concentration and composition. Specifically, the nonlinear refractive index coefficient of the atmosphere directly influences the nonlinear propagation of femtosecond lasers in the air. The presence of aerosol particles in the atmosphere, particularly water droplets, may affect this nonlinear refractive index coefficient. However, the measurement of the nonlinear refractive index coefficient of highly scattering aerosols has not yet been reported. In this paper, a method to obtain the nonlinear refractive index coefficients of aerosols based on spectral changes is presented. Experiment measured the n 2 coefficient of the air and water vapor aerosols respectively. Experimental results show that the n 2 coefficients are 2.5 × 10 −19 cm 2 /W and 2.4 × 10 −19 cm 2 /W respectively for air with incident energy of 48 μJ and 68 μJ, the n 2 coefficient are 2.5 × 10 −19 cm 2 /W and 2.3 × 10 −19 cm 2 /W respectively for aerosol with attenuation coefficients of 0.029 dB/cm. When the concentration of aerosols was increased to an attenuation coefficient of 0.045 dB/cm, the nonlinear refractive index coefficient of the aerosols was 3.1 × 10 −19 cm 2 /W. The experimental results indicated that low concentrations of aerosols did not affect the nonlinear refractive index coefficient of air, but as the concentration increased to a certain level, the nonlinear refractive index coefficient of air increased. This work provides a simpler and faster technical route for measuring the n 2 coefficient of gaseous media, offers a new approach to the problem of measuring the nonlinear refractive index of thick, highly scattering media, and addresses the shortcomings of the z-scan.

Abstract:We developed a simple, accurate single-shot method to determine the nonlinear refractive index of air by measuring the evolution of the spatial shape of a laser beam propagating through the atmosphere. A distinctive feature of this new method, which relies on a modified Fresnel propagation model for data analysis, is the use of a hard aperture for producing a well-defined, high-quality beam from a comparatively non-uniform quasi-flat-top beam, which is typical for high-peak-power lasers. The nonlinear refractive index of air for a very short (2 ps) long-wave infrared (LWIR) laser pulse was measured for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, yielding n2=3.0×10-23m2/W at 9.2 µm. This result is 40% lower than a corresponding measurement with longer (200 ps) LWIR pulses at a similar wavelength.

Abstract:A method is reported to simultaneously measure the nonlinear absorption and refraction coefficients of materials using a nonlinear-imaging technique with a phase object. In this technique, the sign and magnitude of both the nonlinear absorption and refraction can be acquired conveniently from the analysis of three experiment images: the linear image, the nonlinear image and the image without sample. In order to validate our approach, we demonstrate this method for ZnSe at 532 nm where two-photon absorption is present and the nonlinear refractive index n 2 is negative. The values of β (nonlinear absorption coefficient) and n 2 we measured are very close to the values found in other literature.

Abstract:We measure the transmission of near-infrared ps pulses through single CdTe nanowires. Benefitting from the strong light confinement and large effective nonlinearity of these nanowires, a significant spectral broadening of similar to 5 nm and nonlinear phase shift of a few pi due to self-phase modulation (SPM) is observed experimentally at coupled peak power of a dozen W with a propagating length down to several hundred grns. A nonlinear-index coefficient (n(2)) as high as (9.5 +/- 1.4) x 10(-17) m(2)/W at 1550 nm is extracted from transmission spectra, corresponding to a nonlinear parameter (gamma) of similar to 1050 W-1 m(-1). The simulations indicate a spectral broadening more than 1.5 gm in single nanowire when pumped by fs pulses in anomalous dispersion regime. The obtained results suggest that, CdTe nanowire is promising in developing ultracompact nonlinear optical devices for microphotonic circuits. Abstract:The third-order nonlinear refractive index n2 of nitrobenzene liquid was studied using Z-scan technique under femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses. The Z-scan results demonstrate that the n2 value under 20 ps, 532 nm laser pulse excitation is 11 times larger than that under 300 fs, 800 nm excitation. The mechanism of nonlinear refraction dynamics of nitrobenzene was investigated using pump-probe with phase object technique under femtosecond pulses excitation. The nonlinear response function of nitrobenzene under ultrafast laser excitation was determined from the pump-probe experimental results. The target of the present work is to provide a reference for future work of integrated photonic device and nonlinear optical measurement based on solvent nitrobenzene.

Abstract:Optical nonlinearities of periodically poled LiNbO3 crystals were investigated by the single beam Z-scan technique with a continuous wave (cw) laser beam at 532 nm. The nonlinear optical absorption coefficient and refractive index change are determined to be 8.1 x 10(-6) cm/W and 2.6 x 10(-4) at 0.5 MW/cm(2) light intensity, respectively. Both sign and magnitude of the measured refractive nonlinearity are considerably different from the Z-scan results in congruent LiNbO3. The nonlinearities in the periodically poled LiNbO3 induced by 532 nm continuous waves are believed to be mainly due to the photorefractive effect. (C) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We demonstrate a simple and reliable method for measuring the two-dimensional refractive index (RI) distribution of transparent liquids, either homogeneous or inhomogeneous. The RI variation and the RI over the laser incident surface are measured by computing the phase shift of the interferograms as the optical path difference between the two beams passing through the sample liquid and air is changing. The phase shift is calculated by analyzing the interferograms by fast Fourier transform and a fringe shift counter. The RI change of the NaCl-water in the dissolving process was successfully measured by our method. This algorithm is stable, fast, efficient and of high accuracy up to 10(-4). It holds potential for some applications that requires noncontact, and particularly for inhomogeneous transparent mediums.

Abstract:Two modified Z-scan methods, in which the far-field on-axis aperture in common Z-scan is replaced by an off-axis aperture and a circular board, are suggested for measurements of n2 with enhanced sensitivity. The calculated results show that with the increase of the distance from the off-axis aperture to the axis or the diameter of the circular board, the peak-valley normalised transmittance difference of Z-scan will increase rapidly. Also the Z-scan characteristics with a nonlinear absorption are analyzed.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity of C60/NH2-(CH2)3-Si(OC2H5)3 sol and gel excited by a Nd:YAG laser with 150 ps pulse duration, 1.06μm wavelength and 1 Hz repeat was measured by using Z-scanning technique. Theoretical fits from the data give the value of n2 =5.6×10-12 esu for the sol and 6.2×10-12 esu for the gel. The higher laser transmission of the gel at the focus than that of the sol was attributed to the strong nonlinear scattering of the sol.

Abstract:In this measurement of the nonlinear refraction index of 4 mm thick Nd:YVO4 crystal, the single-beam Z scan method is employed and the experimental data is processed according to the Z scan theory of thin sample. As a result, the refraction index, which tallies with the one resulting from other different measure method, is obtained in this measurement. So the rationality and the validity of this simple measurement and data processing method are proved.

Abstract:An ultrasensitive third-order optical nonlinearity measurement was theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on an extended Sagnac interferometer using weak value amplification. The predictable nonlinear refractive index coefficient (n2) of a nonlinear optical sample (nematic liquid crystals) accorded with the experimental result, which confirmed the rationality and feasibility of the proposed method. The sensitivity of the proposed method was associated with the resolution of the spectrometer and the postselection angle. By choosing a currently available spectrometer, the minimum Kerr phase of about 7.5 × 10−7 rad could be measured. Moreover, low cost and convenient operation of this method might have potential application in third-order optical nonlinearity measurements.

Abstract:We report that a modified Z-scan method by nonlinear ellipse rotation (NER) can be used to discriminate true nonlinear refraction from thermal effect in the transient regime and steady state. The combination of Z-scan and NER allows us to measure the third-order nonlinear susceptibility component without the influence of thermal-optical nonlinearity. The experimental results of pure CS(2) and CS(2) solutions of nigrosine verify that the transient thermal effect can be successfully eliminated from the NER-modified Z-scan measurements. This method is also extended to the case in which thermal-optical nonlinearities depend on a high repetition rate of femtosecond laser pulses for the N,N-dimethylmethanamide solutions of graphene oxide.

Abstract:The transmittance technique with a phase object (T-PO), for measuring optical nonlinear coefficients is proposed with a top-hat beam. The sensitivity of the T-PO with a top-hat beam is a factor of 4 greater than that with a Gaussian beam. The validity of this method is verified by measuring the nonlinearity of a well-characterized liquid, CS 2 at 532-nm wavelength. The ease of use of this method has been proved by measuring a new compound 4-( N-methyl, N-hydroxyethyl) amino, 4'-nitroazobenzene(ANAB) at 600-nm wavelength, indicating that this method can be extended to the measurement of optical nonlinearities in a wide-band spectrum.

Abstract:A reversal 4f coherent imaging system with phase objects is presented to measure nonlinear refraction of the materials. The modified system can increase the sensitivity compared with the conventional nonlinear-imaging technique with phase objects. The sensitivity enhancement of the modified system is about two times greater than the conventional technique within 0≤ΔφNL≤1. CS2 is used to demonstrate the measurement using the reversal 4f coherent imaging system with phase objects.

Abstract:Wavelength 1064 nm is one of the most widely used laser wavelengths in industries and science. The high-precision measurement of the refractive index of optical materials at 1064 nm is significant for improving the optical design. We study the direct measurement of refractive index at 1064 nm of lasers, including calcium fluoride (CaF2), fused silica and zinc selenide (ZnSe), whose refractive indices cover a large range from 1.42847 to 2.48272. The measurement system is built based on the quasi-common-path Nd:YAG laser feedback interferometry. The thickness can be measured simultaneously with the refractive index. The results demonstrate that the system has absolute uncertainties of similar to 10(-5) and similar to 10(-4) mm in refractive index and thickness measurement, respectively.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearities of semiconductor bulk material Indium nitride (InN) have been investigated by Reflection Z-scan technique (RZ-scan) at the wavelength of 532nm with 21ps laser pulse. Top hat beam is used in order to get high spatial quality. Different from the normal RZ-scan device, instead of moving the sample, the lens before the sample is moved along z-axis. This can guarantee the stability of the spot on the surface of the sample and the measurement accuracy. The measurement of nonlinear refraction without aperture should be tested first, and then with a small aperture nonlinear absorption coefficient is measured. The experimental results show that InN has positive nonlinear refraction and saturable absorption effect. Nonlinear refraction and absorption coefficient are obtained by fitting theoretical simulation with experimental data.
Second Z-Scan in Materials with Nonlinear Refraction and Nonlinear Absorption

Abstract:The Z-scan technique is a popular method for measuring optical nonlinearities using a single laser beam. We describe a simplified second Z-scan technique for cases where nonlinear refraction is accompanied by nonlinear absorption to separately evaluate the nonlinear refraction and the nonlinear absorption by performing straightforward measurement with the aperture removed. We divide the normalized transmittance of the closed aperture (S < 1) Z-scan by that of the open-aperture (S = 1) Z-scan. It is found that not only the ratio rho of the imaginary part chi(I)((3)) to the real part chi(R)((3)) of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility chi((3)) but also the linear transmittance S of the aperture has a great influence on the performance of the second Z-scan. Some useful results, which determine whether a second Z-scan can be performed or not, have been obtained for the rho dependence of the critical linear transmittance S-c of the aperture and S dependence of the critical ratio rho(c). These results may be applied to timely adjusted experimental conditions in order to obtain highly accurate data. We demonstrate this method on a CH3OH solution of Co2L3 with 7 ns laser pulses.
Study of nonlinear optical properties of organic material utilizing two-color Z-scan

Abstract:The theory of two-color Z-scan was studied. The expression of the normalized on-axis transmittance in the far field was derived with some simplifications, and the influences of the wavelength and beam waist radius of the pump and probe beams on the measurement sensitivity were discussed. Utilizing an Ar + laser with the wavelength of 514.5 nm as pump beam and a He-Ne laser with the wavelength of 632.8 nm as probe beam, a two-color Z-scan experiment was performed in organic solvents of C60 and 4-BCMU which has different absorption coefficients at 514.5 nm, and their thermal-induced non-degenerate nonlinear refractive index n2 were measured to be -3.46��10 -5 esu and -4.06��10 -5esu, respectively. Some phenomena observed in this experiment were explained.
