Abstract:This group of six papers makes respectively different approaches to literary ethical criticism. Professor Nie Zhenhao makes a pioneering and comprehensive exposition of the notion of literary ethical criticism, including its sources, methods, contents, foundations, the applicable areas, practical values and realistic significance. Professor Knut takes Ibsen′s plays for example to discuss not only the moralities in Ibsen′s plays, but also the necessity and importance of literary ethical criticism. Professor Wang Ning talks about Ecocriticism together with literary ethical criticism, providing a good example for combining literary ethical criticism with some other methods of literary criticism. Based on the three phases of human self-recognition and in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspectives, Professor Liu Jianjun makes a further interpretation of the ethical method in literary criticism. Professor Qiao Guoqiang speculates inquisitively the definition and ideological foundations of the ethical criticism. He also makes a conceptual debate over the authors, their literary works and their readers in terms of the critical method. Believing that it is three-dimensional and apocalyptical, Professor Zou Jianjun discusses the historical and realistic significances of the ethical method in literary criticism. In brief, all the above-mentioned papers attempt to state that in an era of moral invisibility in literary criticism, the critics should be responsible for moral re-establishment through literary criticism and therefore, to recover or retrieve the moral values in literature. They believe that literary ethical criticism is one of the most important approaches to achieving this end.

Abstract:Half a century ago, Mr Liang Shuming raised a theory that the moral Chinese family life, which provides Chinese people with emothional comfort and encouragement, has a religious effect in Chinese society, meanwhile the kind of function is carried by the religions in Western society. In this article, the author holds the opinion that this theory is not out-of-date yet. Moreover, in the author's view, it still plays an important role not only in the identification of the Confucianism's influence, but also in some current moral theory issues, especially some difficult problems in Western ethics.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism has been a methodology in China since 2004,as at that year two conferences in that field were held respectively in Nanchang and Yichang and then comes the highly-cited paper "Ethical Approach to Literary Studies: A New Perspective." Compared with ethic criticism in west countries,ethical literary criticism in China has its own features: it changes the literary ethics into ethical literary criticism as a mean efficiently to solve practical literary questions,uses the concept of ethical literary criticism rather than ethical criticism to construct its own discourse,and discusses the basic theoretical questions by case studies.It is those features that make it different from ethical criticism in the west,as well as moral criticism in China.

Abstract:In contemporary age the ethnics develops in both ″introvert″ and ″extravert″ ways.The former is represented by the renaissance of political philosophy,and the latter,by the development of moral metaphysics and moral psychology.This paper is a discussion and review of Kant's moral philosophy in perspective of moral psychology.It analyzes some key Kantian concepts: will,reason and liberty,reflects the moral psychological sense of the three axioms of Kant's ethnics,and re-investigates the relationship between Kant's and Hegel's ethnical theories.Through those efforts it presents a profile of the framework and connections of Kant's moral psychological theories.

Abstract:This paper explains He Lin's excavation of Wang Anshi's Thoughts on Mind from the perspectives of theory of mind and theory of human nature . Abstract:Although Liang Qichao's theory of public morals in his Newman Essay has been most influential in modern times,so that even people take the moral theory of Newman Essay down to the theory of public morals.But In fact his later commentaries on personal morals in the Newman Essay made great additions and amendments to theory of public morals by more deeply thinking of the basic meaning and value of morality in the whole moral structure.At the same time commentaries on personal morals established ideological position and direction for Liang Qichao as a modern new Confucian,also laid model of adjustment and development for Confucian moral theory in modern times.

Abstract:Most of the moral entries in ethics of Mencius do not only refer to virtue (德性) that of inherent quality,but also refer to virtuous conduct (德行).In fact,the concept of moral entries (德目) in classic Confucianism often refers to virtuous conduct,virtue,principal,etc.Thus the concept of virtuous topics in classic Confucianism cannot be interpreted only as virtue and that is where careful analysis is needed.The concepts of Ren and Yi (仁义) and etc.in Mencius’philosophy still have the meaning of virtuous conduct,and while these concepts take up the thought of Confucius,they continue to deepen and have new development.To view from the perspective of virtuous conduct and virtue,the main traditional virtuous topics have been transformed gradually from virtuous conduct to virtue in Mencius’thoughts.This article uses the perspective of virtue ethics to study and discuss further in the theory of virtue in Mencius’philosophy.

Abstract:In recent years, with the assistance of the progress of comparative study on Chinese and Western philosophy, the underlying meaning of "the unity of knowledge and action"(知行合一) by Wang Yangming has been reconsidered. However, in the relevant discourse on this topic,"when a thought is aroused it is already the presentation of moral knowledge and action" (一念发动便是知亦便是行) is an important statement which has long been neglected due to its only appearance in the Complied Works of Wang Yangming's Remaining Words. It is undoubtedly the supplement of the familiar statement "when a thought is aroused it is already action" (一念发动处便即是行) and an complete explanation of "the unity of knowledge and action". It indicates that when "knowledge-action" is in the process of the moral knowledge through a sudden thought (一念良知), "knowledge" is not of experience (闻见之知) but of virtue ( 德性之知), and it also refers to will and intention, which cannot be separated from the action that aroused from thought. Moral knowledge's ability of self-reflexive enables the accomplishment of the "unity of knowledge and action". In this sense, since liangzhi is"unity of knowledge and action", therefore, this is a liangzhi ethics statement rather than epistemological statement.

Abstract:Ethical literary criticism is a theory of interpreting and analyzing literature from an ethical perspective. It examines literature as a unique expression of ethics and morality within a certain historical period, and argues that literature is not just an art of language, but also an art of text. Ethical literary criticism is aimed at interpreting literary texts, claiming that almost all literary texts are the records of human beings' moral experiences and contain ethical structures or ethical lines. Ethical lines form the main ethical structure. Compared to the written text in literature, the text of oral literature, which can be termed as brain text, is stored in the human brain. The material and fundamental existence of literature is based on written context. The evolving definition of literature is dependent upon the culture and context from which it originated.

Abstract:Early modem novels configuring modernity are established on the basis of the motif of ethical self-confession between double-domed male hero and another male intellectual. The literary ethical device of self-confession is created by male intellectuals and emerged through the interaction between the male characters. Modem Japanese literature has thus created the standard method of the modem novel as it expresses the modern individual's ethical sense. of guilt or ethical inner conflicts through confession. In this respect, it is not unconvincing to say that the new modem state as well as the individual has builtthe ethical order which form the background of the birth of modem Japanese literature. This paper will not only examine the literary ethics implicit in the device of confession, but also provide an alternative approach to the history of modem Japanese literature by adopting Nie Zhenzhao's Method of "ethical literary criticism."

Abstract:By discussing the relations of knowledge and morality, the author of this paper explores attempts to disclose possible errors made by modern Chinese scholars in exploring possible approaches to integrating traditional Confucianism with knowledge. According to the author, knowledge and morality are basically different in nature although there is no absolute distinction between them. Man shows his concerns about morality either by cognition or by practice. Each approach has its particular logic, and may develop along the lines of this logic by itself. While the integration of knowledge and morals may be a theoretical issue, their interaction and combination in the real sense only occurs in practice. The accusation that Confucianism “prioritizes morality over knowledge” is just as wrong as the accusation that scientists' pursuit of knowledge as “prioritizes knowledge over morality.” The integration of Confucianism with knowledge is mainly primarily a matter of practice rather than theory. Many modern researchers (particularly Neo-Confucians) seek an approach that integrates traditional Confucianism and the knowledge in Western intellectual traditions from the metaphysical and ontological perspectives. This is due to the fact that they fail to see the relationship between knowledge and morality, and wrongly accuse traditional Confucianism of prioritizing morality over knowledge. As a result, they fail to see the modern integration of Confucian moral traditions with knowledge as a process of self-cultivation and the individual's personal moral practice in maintaining or restructuring the values of the self in the face of the world of knowledge.

Abstract:Wang Guo-wei interpreted li(reason or rationalism) from knowledge,metaphysical and ethical points of view. He applied the principle of knowledge as the fundamental principle to interpreting li and thereby negated its metaphysical and ethical meanings,which revealed Wang's intention to alter the mystical element intraditional Chinese philosophy. However,the practice of this intention neglected the particular content and value of li in traditional Chinese philosophy and therefore impaired the unity and significance of his interpretation. Thus the question of how to keep the balance between interpreting and interpreted still remains unsolved.

Abstract:Mencius, referred to as second sage in Chinese philosophy history, grounds his theory about original goodness of human nature on psychological components by bringing in something new down ancient ages. Including the principles of virtuous action associated with Confucius to his doctrine, but by composing them along psychosocial development, he theorizes utterly out of the ordinary that makes all the difference to the school. In his argument stated a positive opinion, he explains the method of forming individuals’ moral awareness by means of inseparable integrity of feelings and thoughts, saying human being are born innately good. According to Mencius, heart-mind correlation is the motivational complement of inner incentives. Knowledge and virtue, which are extensions of inborn goodness, comprehended intuitively; then affective motives respond to circumstance, what is learned transmits to cognitive process and eventually behavior emerges. Comparing during the years of Warring State period he lived, in western geography Aristotle, who is one of the pioneers of Greek philosophy, argues deductive and inductive methods in mental activity. On the other hand, Mencius uses analogical reasoning throughout his self-titled work. This essay is an attempt to assert that most postulates of developmental theories, which have been considered an integral part of modern psychology, begin with Mencius in early era. Secondly, this study also aims to discuss the main paradigm of Mencius across emotivist-rationalist opposition, which keeps emotion above thought as well as reason above emotion.

Abstract:Experimental ethics is the scientific study of moral issues,focusing on understanding the psychological mechanisms of moral behaviors and finding solutions for moral conflicts.Within experimental ethics lie four topics of exploration:The first line of investigation involves the experimental testing of popular conceptions of human nature.The second line of research uses psychological methods(including neuroscience technology)to untangle the complex effects of human reason and emotion on moral responses.The third line of research concerns the influence of context on individual moral behaviors,challenging the philosophic notion of moral virtues and characters.Finally,the fourth line of research covers cross-cultural studies in moral psychology, illustrating how certain aspects of human morality are universal and how many aspects of it are culture-specific.We argue that the study of experimental ethics will help us better understand the true nature of human morality,enlighten us about "what is" and "what should be" in moral understanding,and bridge the gap between the astute fields of experimental psychology and the erudite fields of philosophy.

Abstract:Among different types of vitalism in modern China,LIANG Shu-ming's vitalism focuses on the evolution of all the different kinds of living beings with emphasis on human beings, especially the evolution of their ethical and spiritual life,more specifically,the creation of Confucian ethical life and spirit.In the construction of his ethical vitalism, Liang takes Confucian ethical tradition and value of"law in this world"as foundation,and vests the ideas of life,intuition, reason,evolution,creation,spirituality,which normally are not vested with ethical values,with Confucian ethical values. Furthermore,Liang's thought is also influenced by the"law for leaving this world"from Buddhism,and his ethical vitalism makes promise for the evolution in the future.LIANG Shu-ming's reflection on life,ethical life and mind,and even the mentality from psychology,is never restricted in the present,but within a long time frame.The way of life,mind,and spirit is how they evolve.

Abstract:By explanations of origination,development and their fundamental connotations of theories of Zhu-zi and Yang-ming,the modern significations of them will be illustrated.The most vital part of Zhu-zi theory is that of "to obtain knowledge by investigating nature of things",the distinctiveness of which is to do one's best to establish a position for knowledge inquiry activities of people.Minds equaling to sense and acquiring conscience constitute main philosophic propositions,in which "integrating conscience and activities into a whole" shows an important feature of this antilogy.Zhu-zi emphasized the characters of reading and studying,which offers a very good instruction for setting up modern "studying society" and "lifelong education".As for college's general education,the thoughts of Zhu-zi besides those of Confucian's impart the most important sources.Zhu-zi advocated that "own reverence" stands for working attitudes of self-restrained,solemnity and earnest,and diligence and undivided,which still offers important sources to maintain positive ethic for East Asian societies.Yang-ming theory emphasizes practice which embodies "integrating conscience and activities into a whole","tempering oneself by doing things",this kind of philosophic spirits merged with practical philosophy development since 19th century is interlinked well with modern philosophy.The idea of Wang Yang-ming's all things are one merits ecumenical value in terms of human peaceful development and ethic supporting for ecological and environment protection.

Abstract:As the theoretic means for explaining and analyzing the thinking history, the study pattern potentially stipulates the academic vision and analyzing methods for the thinking history. The present study often puts the modern enlightenment to the opposing frame between rationalism and non-rationalism and leads to the theories such as the opposite between the enlightenment and salvation, belief and reason. Aiming at various defects brought by such dualist opposing static study patterns, it is necessary to use the dynamic study pattern, reconstruct the ways to understanding the Chinese enlightening questions and the principle of value estimate; first of all it is to set the study method of 'relation thought'; secondly, on t-his basis to carry out the dynamic investigation of the enlightening principle.
