TOXICITY OF INSECTICIDES COMMONLY USED IN VEGETABLE FIELDS TO THE DIAMONDBACK MOTH, PLUTELLA XYLOSTELLA, AND ITS PARASITE, COTESIA PLUTELLAE

Abstract:Toxicity of 9 insecticides commonly used in vegetable fields to the larvae of the diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.), and its major larval parasite, Cotesia plutellae Kurdjumov, was investigated in the laboratory. When tested at the rates recommended for field application by the producers, fipronil, Bt and avermectin produced 100% kill of the 3rd instar larvae of DBM, a mixture of Bt and virus, diafenthiuron and chlorfluazuron over 95% kill, and “shachongshuang” 80% kill. However, fenvalerate and methomyl produced rather low rates of kill, and over 70% of the DBM larvae tested could still pupate normally. When adult parasites were exposed to the fresh, dry insecticide film, “shachongshuang” killed more than 80% of the adults in 2 h, and fipronil 100% in 12 h. After 24 h exposure to the insecticide film, more than 90% of adults were killed by methomyl and “shachongshuang”, about 50% of the adults were killed by diafenthiuron and fenvalerate. The mortality caused by chlorfluazuron, Bt, avermectin and the mixture of Bt and virus were all below 20%, as that in the control. It is recommended that avermectin, Bt, the mixture of Bt and virus, diafenthiuron, and chlorfluazuron should be selected to control DBM during seasons when C.plutellae and other natural enemies are relatively abundant. Fipronil should be used only when DBM is very abundant and natural enemies are in very low numbers.
