Abstract:The shared buffer of router architecture could reduce space greatly.Aiming at the traditional router architecture,an architecture that could support multi-path routing was presented.Then,based on the theory of linear programming,a multi-path routing method was presented.Compared with the traditional single-path routing strategy,this new approach can reduce the overall execution time by avoid congestion in network greatly.The results prove that,with multi-path routing method,the total execution time can be reduced with 12%～13% in uniform situation and 22%～23% in hot-spot situation.

Abstract:Mobile IP(MIP) based on IP layer offers a global mobility solution to support wireless Internet traffic.In this paper,to eliminate the triangle routing problem and minimize handoff latency,the route optimization extensions for Mobile IP(ROMIP) is complemented and the backward smooth handoff mechanism is utilized in Network Simulator(NS-2,Version: 2).Binding cache management messages(Binding Warning,BW;Binding Update,BU;Binding Request,BR;Binding Acknowledgement,BA,etc.) are introduced into the original NS-2 framework.Moreover,backward smooth handoff mechanism is used to minimize the handoff latency.The simulation results show that,compared with the standard Mobile IP protocol in ROMIP,the achieved bandwidth increases evidently while the end-to-end packet delay remains low.Owing to the implementation of smooth handoff,handoff latency is cut down more than 50%.Moreover,this method keeps transparent for hardware and convenient for software.The research provides a valuable and practical implementation method for real-time communication in Mobile IP network.

Abstract:Internet service provider faces a daunting challenge in provisioning network efficiently. We introduce a proactive multipath routing scheme that tries to route traffic according to its built-in properties. Based on mathematical analysis, our approach disperses incoming traffic flows onto multiple paths according to path qualities. Long-lived flows are detected and migrated to the shortest path if their QoS could be guaranteed there. Suggesting non-disjoint path set, four types of dispersion policies are analyzed, and flow classification policy which relates flow trigger with link state update period is investigated. Simulation experiments show that our approach outperforms traditional single path routing significantly.

Abstract:Routing failures are common on the Internet and routing protocols can not always react fast enough to recover from them, which usually cause packet delivery failures. To address the problem, fast reroute solutions have been proposed to guarantee reroute path availability and to avoid high packet loss after network failures. However, existing solutions are often specific to single type of routing protocol. It is hard to deploy these solutions together to protect Internet routing including both intra- and inter-domain routing protocols because of their individual computational and storage complexity. Moreover, most of them can not provide effective protection for traffic over failed links, especially for the bi-directional traffic. In this paper, we propose a unified fast reroute solution for routing protection under network failures. Our solution leverages identifier based direct forwarding to guarantee the effectiveness of routing protection and supports incremental deployment. In particular, enhanced protection cycle (e-cycle) is proposed to construct rerouting paths and to provide node and link protection for both intra- and inter-domain routing protocols. We evaluate our solution by simulations, and the results show that the solution provides 100% failure coverage for all end-to-end routing paths with approximately two extra Forwarding Information Base (FIB) entries. Furthermore, we report an experimental evaluation of the proposed solution in operational networks. Our results show that the proposed solution effective provides failure recovery and does not introduce processing overhead to packet forwarding.

Abstract:Most end devices are now equipped with multiple network interfaces. Applications can exploit all available interfaces and benefit from multipath transmission. Recently Multipath TCP (MPTCP) was proposed to implement multipath transmission at the transport layer and has attracted lots of attention from academia and industry. However, MPTCP only supports TCP-based applications and its multipath routing flexibility is limited. In this paper, we investigate the possibility of orchestrating multipath transmission from the network layer of end devices, and develop a Multipath IP (MPIP) design consisting of signaling, session and path management, multipath routing, and NAT traversal. We implement MPIP in Linux and Android kernels. Through controlled lab experiments and Internet experiments, we demonstrate that MPIP can effectively achieve multipath gains at the network layer. It not only supports the legacy TCP and UDP protocols, but also works seamlessly with MPTCP. By facilitating user-defined customized routing, MPIP can route traffic from competing applications in a coordinated fashion to maximize the aggregate user Quality-of-Experience.

Abstract:Multi-path routing is a promising technique to increase the Internet's reliability and to give users greater control over the service they receive. Currently the interdomain routing protocol limits each router to using a single route for same destination, which may not satisfy the diverse requirements of end users. In this paper, in order to support the effective and efficient multi-path service(MPS), we propose a multi-path inter-domain routing via deviation from primary path(MIR-DPP) which includes two main steps as following. Firstly, to improve the path diversity of node pairs, the special topology collected from neighboring ASes around the primary path, and the multipath set is calculated by our multipath discovery method. Secondly, to gain high-quality paths which are not compliant with routing policy, a negotiation mechanism is designed to address policy limits. Experiments with Internet topology and routing data demonstrate that MIR-DPP offers tremendous flexibility and diversity for path selection with reasonable overhead.

Abstract:Global routing is an extremely important stage of very large scale integration (VLSI) physical design. With the rise of nano-scale integrated circuit design, the multilayer global routing problem has attracted considerable research interest during the past few years. In this article, a multilayer X-architecture global routing (ML-XGR) system based on particle swarm optimization (PSO), called FZU-Router, is proposed to solve the ML-XGR problem for the first time. FZU-Router contains a multilayer X-architecture integer linear programming (MX-ILP) model and a multilayer X-architecture PSO (MX-PSO) algorithm, which are presented to formulate and solve the ML-XGR problem, respectively. Moreover, four effective strategies are designed to enhance the efficiency of FZU-Router: 1) a strategy for generating new routing modes is proposed to strengthen the robustness of encoding strategy of MX-PSO; 2) a strategy for combining MX-PSO with maze routing is proposed to improve the routability; 3) a strategy for reducing the channel capacity is proposed to make better use of optimization ability of MX-PSO; and 4) a strategy for dynamic resource assignment is proposed to make better use of routing resources and shorten the running time. Experimental results on multiple benchmarks confirm that the proposed FZU-Router leads to fewer total overflow and shorter total wirelength compared with the state-of-the-art routers.

A Multi-Path Routing Protocol with Sub-Shortest Path for Wireless Multi-Hop Networks

Abstract:The multi-path routing can increase the throughput and balance load of network.In order to balance the load in wireless multi-hop networks,a novel multi-path routing strategy with the sub-shortest route is proposed,referred as Sub-shortest Multiple-path Wireless Routing Protocol(SM-WRP)protocol.The SM-WRP protocol provides multiple node-disjoint routes,which may include a shortest route and a sub-shortest one.And distributes the traffic in these paths to alleviate the congestion generation.The performance comparison with Multiple path Wireless Routing Protocol(M-WRP)by simulation shows that the proposed SM-WRP can achieve an improvement over M-WRP in terms of packet delivery ratio and average end-to-end delay under the heavy load situation.

Abstract:Hot-potato routing is a border gateway protocol policy that selects the 'closest' egress router in terms of interior gateway protocol cost. This policy imposes inherent interactions between intra-AS Autonomous System and inter-AS traffic engineering. In light of this observation, we present a hybrid intra-AS and inter-AS traffic engineering scheme named egress selection based upon hot potato routing. This scheme involves link weight optimization, which can not only minimize the time that IP Internet Protocol packets travel across the network by assigning specified egress router but also balance the load among the internal links of the transit network. Egress selection based upon hot potato routing also incorporates multi-topology routing technique to address the problem that one set of link weights might not guarantee specified egress routers. Accordingly, we formulate the link weights optimization problem using multi-topology routing as a mixed integer linear programming model. And we present a new heuristic algorithm to make the problem tractable. Numerical results show that only a few topologies are needed to guarantee specified egress router, and maximum link utilization is also reduced. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:We propose a QoS (Quality-of-Service)-guaranteed multipath routing policy in MPLS (Multiple Protocol Label Switching) networks. The key idea is traffic dispersion throughout the network, so that the load of the network can be balanced and call admission ratio is increased while user-required QoS being guaranteed. We first discuss the decomposition and allocation issues of end-to-end QoS constraints on paths. Based on these analyses, we present the traffic dispersion path selection strategy used by multipath routing, and also investigate the critical parameter K's effect on the performance of above path selection strategy. Numerical results show the effectiveness of multipath routing in traffic dispersion, load balancing, and call-admission-ratio improvement. We also conclude that the advantage of using multipath routing becomes more obvious as the users' requests for network resources get stricter.

Abstract:Intra-domain traffic engineering can significantly enhance the performance of large IP backbone networks. An important component of current methods for traffic engineering with link state routing protocols like OSPF is accurate knowledge of traffic matrix. However, the traffic matrix is unknown and varies with time. So it is important to obtain a traffic engineering method that is "robust" to variations in traffic matrix. In this paper, we use multi-topology routing (MTR) for providing robust traffic engineering in IP networks. We first formulate the problem of robust traffic engineering using MTR as a mixed integer programming problem (MIP). To make the problem solvable, we then decompose the problem into logical topologies design problem and traffic assignment problem, which are solved by a heuristic algorithm and a tractable linear programming (LP) model, respectively. Using simulation results on Rocketfuel topologies, we study and discuss effectiveness of the proposed robust traffic engineering approach. Simulation results show that robust traffic engineering based on MTR is promising.

Abstract:In this paper, a network-based service management framework is proposed. Our framework places programmable nodes, distributes services among these nodes and directs traffic through them in accordance to a predefined sequence. Based on standard shortest path routing, it is impossible to represent all paths as shortest paths with only one set of link weights, i.e., partial traffic cannot be directed through required service nodes. In order to solve this problem, multi-topology routing (MTR) is introduced to provide multiple optional paths over multiple sets of link weights. One mixed integer linear programming model is proposed for the joint optimization problem. Numerical results show that our optimization scheme is feasible and effective in network with standard shortest path routing.

Abstract:Even though IP VPN has practically proven itself to be a cost-effective solution, the lack of centralized network management capabilities of current IP VPN deployment makes the management of growing VPN networks an extremely tedious procedure. This paper proposes to use policy-based network management method to address this challenge. Firstly, a policy-based IP VPN management architecture is presented, mainly explaining the operational components concerning the IPsec. Then a detailed discussion with respect to policy definition language and IP VPN policy information model is given. Finally, a case study for interdomain IP VPN configuration exemplifies the design and implementation of this management system based on the test-bed developed in the Networks & Services Group of University College London (UCL).

Abstract:BGP and OSPF are two protocols widely used for inter-and intra-domain routing.Their working states have deep influence on network performance.This paper designs and implements a general route monitoring and analysis system.The system collects routing information in real-time,and parses the information to automatically generate inter-and intra-domain topology.The system generates history topology graphs so that users can easily browse and compare them.It also analyzes the routing convergence and stability based on the statistics of the collected routing information.With the help of these convenient functions,network administrators can manage the real-time state of a routing system and take the corresponding operation.
