Abstract:This study aims at showing the ethical approaches in T. S. Eliot’s poetry. I argue that Eliot’s poetry is loaded with ethical approaches that characterized the era in which he lived. Also, the significance of this study arises from the fact that ethics have become buried in modern life. I, among others, feel we need it urgently these days to survive in a nice manner. When reading Eliot’s The Waste Land, we have come with a pessimistic reading of the poem. This reading applies to our life nowadays. Eliot imagines the modern world as a wasteland, a land that has been mixed with ambiguity, aridness, and destruction. This land, according to some critics, gives no indication of purity, which neither the land nor the people could visualize. In The Waste Land, various characters are sexually frustrated or dysfunctional, unable to cope with either reproductive or no reproductive sexuality.

Abstract:From the discourse function perspective of Halliday's Systemic Functional Linguistics, this paper compares and analyzes two Chinese translations of The Waste Land by Zhao Luorui and Zha Liangzheng (Mudan), exploring how the different translations creatively interpret and reconstruct the original text in accordance with the cultural context and aesthetic preferences of the target language. It further investigates how this reconstruction impacts and shapes the target readers' understanding and acceptance process. The study reveals that the translators' distinct orientations in translation strategies lead to significant differences in the translations regarding expressive effects and readers' experiences. Zhao's translation effectively maintains the discourse structure and linguistic style of the original text through a conservative and traditional translation approach. Conversely, Mudan's translation notably enhances the readability and acceptability of the translation with a flexible and innovative translation style. Overall, the latter translation is better suited to the aesthetic habits and cultural background of Chinese readers.

Abstract:Known as ‘Pope of Russel Square’ in the history of English literature from the 20th century, T. S. Eliot’s, literary ingenuity augmented the modernist writings. ‘The Waste Land’ is one such eventuality that, retrospectively from the publication, permuted worldwide, giving boundless definitions and ceaseless critical appraisals. Contriving the idiom of modern poetry, his career as a part never went over the hill since it was chiselled out of the emotional and intellectual retaliation to a gest which was his life itself. The close-grained, fragmented study of his works, has seemingly been immense and comprehensive. Being portrayed as the literary arbiter, his personal life was lucid and full of drama. The oeuvre hence hollers the zeitgeist of his era. As a philosopher, his happy hunting ground was both religion and the emphasis on conforming to the basic moral values of life. His ethical involvement with life emanates from the underlying desolation and devastation regarding his personal life. When he assiduously carried his position in poetry, politics, and literature, he was tagged as heedless in his personal life. The childhood limitations sprouted out from the complications of inguinal hernia, later when he was at Harvard while studying Sanskrit and Indian philosophy, the commencement of WWI and the escape from Oxford after witnessing a society which was wartorn, a love affair with Emily Hale which closed out in two shakes of a lamb’s tail and the hasty entry into wedlock with Vivienne Haigh-Wood whose alleged adultery with Bertrand Russel and her ailment that followed took a toll on his burgeoning literary career. The shuffling was wilfully implemented, as alluded to by many critics. But for a feeler who, exasperated by the atrocities of war, could not necessarily keep the word restrained to the end and the overscrupulous side of Eliot could not have missed the slightest of the change either.

Abstract:The poetic experience is approached as an act of affective communication. Through analysis of a part of The Waste Land by T. S. Eliot, factors that contribute to the empathic communication between poet and reader are examined. It is suggested that the capacity for flexible language behavior of the participants in the poetic experience makes possible this empathic communication. The relationship between language and expression of affect is emphasized. Implications for affect theory are presented.

Abstract:T.S. Eliot's seminal modernist poem "The Waste Land" has long been recognized for its intricate web of literary and philosophical allusions, including references to Mahayana Buddhism. This paper aims to examine the presence and significance of the Bodhisattva, a central figure in this tradition, within the poem. By leveraging Sallie B. King's theory of Buddha Nature (1992), which posits the inherent potential for enlightenment within all beings, this analysis seeks to shed new light on Eliot's portrayal of spiritual desolation, disillusionment and the quest for transformation. Through the lens of Buddha Nature, the fragmented characters and desolate landscapes depicted in "The Waste Land" are re-examined, revealing hidden layers that resonate with the notion of inherent enlightenment in apparent spiritual crisis. The paper explores how Eliot's engagement with Buddhist philosophy, as reflected through the concept of Buddha Nature, bridges eastern and western worldviews, offering a platform for cross-cultural dialogue and interpretation. By synthesizing King's scholarly insights with literary analysis, this paper sheds light on the transcendent potential embedded within the poem. It seeks to unravel Eliot's nuanced exploration of human suffering, the quest for enlightenment, and the interplay between spiritual emptiness and the inherent Buddha Nature. The Bodhisattva's commitment to guiding others toward enlightenment echoes the potential for transformation and renewal embedded within Eliot's desolate world. Through this analysis, the paper aims to contribute to the ongoing scholarly discourse surrounding Eliot's masterpiece, offering fresh perspectives on the poem's engagement with Buddhist philosophy and its universal themes of suffering, enlightenment and the human condition. By illuminating the presence and significance of the Bodhi-sattva and Buddha Nature in "The Waste Land", this paper hopes to inspire further exploration of the transcendent potential within Eliot's work and its enduring relevance in the modern world.

Abstract:Sometime ago, I found myself using the diagnosis of a student's depression as a critical tool of interpretation, searching for signs of mental illness in her essay that explored order and disorder in T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. I realised that my reading had become a creative act, combining poem, poet, student essay and author to create, in a sense, one (un)readable text. The present paper is a reflection upon the processes of order and disorder located in a diagnosis of "madness" and the readings of writer and text this diagnosis initiated. I look to deconstruct acts of reading and diagnosis.

Abstract:After the World War-1, there spread chaos and disillusionment in society, faith got shattered and life became meaningless. Jean-Paul Sartre’s version of Existentialism is based on this meaninglessness and absurdity. Man faces an absurd and meaningless existence in this chaotic world. Thus these two are the main tropes of Sartre’s philosophy. T. S. Eliot also lived in that chaotic age and composed his long narrative poem The Waste Land (1930) after the World War. This poem is based on the consequences of the war that caused absurdity and chaos depriving human life of real significance and value. This study explores and analyses these aspects of meaninglessness and absurdity in The Waste Land (1930) in the light of Sartre’s philosophy and contends to say that almost all of the characters presented in the poem encounter meaningless and chaotic lives. Their lives are without any real purpose and are quite insignificant in a chaotic and disorderly world. So the land is full of the waste only. This meaningless life is nothing but a heap of the waste. By presenting this picture of chaotic life, Eliot intends to forward a solution in the form of rebirth of the lost religious faith and moral values. This research is significant because the aspects of meaninglessness and absurdity accurately relate to our current times where human beings face real existential threat and the significance of life is being lost. This awareness may lead to an immediate solution. Moreover, this study may provoke further research in this area in order to bring out the relevance of literary texts to all times and human life everywhere.

Abstract:This article discusses the stemma,valency and dependency based on Tesniere(1959),which consist of the fundamental elements of Structural syntax.Considering the importance of the syntax for natural language processing,the theory is also investigated from the viewpoints of formalization and parsing.The author concludes that structural syntax of Tesniere is an analyzing-oriented and semantic-driven theory.The basic property makes the theory into an important and practical means in language teaching and computational linguistics.

Abstract:The modernist poems “The Waste Land” (1922) and Paris (1919) both respond in oblique ways to the aftermath of the First World War, featuring prominent images of both death and societal decline as well as new growth and restoration. Through close readings which place these two texts within the post-war context and the poetic and literary responses of this period, I examine the ways in which T. S. Eliot and Hope Mirrlees combine emotional and societal responses to the First World War with wider conceptions of civilisation, myth, folklore and cultural history.

Abstract:My paper aims to find the locus of emotion in T. S. Eliot’s objective poetics. Eliot is best known as the promulgator of modern poetics of objectivity in contrast to the Romantic conception of poetry emphasizing subjective feelings. Specifically, along with “an objective correlative,” “impersonality,” defined as “escape from emotion” or “escape from personality,” becomes the watchword identifying the objectivity of his poetic theory. The problem is that the subsequent Modernist reception of Eliot’s poetics contains misunderstanding it as if it disregarded the emotional aspect of poetry. But, actually, Eliot affirms emotion and personality as the essential poetic experiences over and over again throughout his essays on poetry. And even in those scholars who have recognized that affirmation, the problem lies, too: they are at a loss, looking on Eliot’s acknowledgment of both personality and impersonality as a contradiction. In an attempt to solve these problems, my thesis has raised and justified the argument that Eliot, in his basic premise, allocates “impersonality” in the sphere of the poetic technique of creation and “personality” or “emotion” in the locus of the poetic content. By finding the locus of emotion in another poetic sphere than the objective technique, my argument has concomitantly clarified that Eliot’s conceptions of personality and impersonality are not contradictory at all but consistent over the critical writings published throughout his career.

Abstract:The essay urges scholars to view Eliot not only as a novelist but also as a poet. It focuses upon her poetry writing in the mid-1870s and in her collection of poems, The Legend of Jubal and Other Poems (1874). Understanding Eliot as a self-fashioned poetess who ultimately sought literary eminence through poetry in her career will offer greater insight into the sensibility of one of the nineteenth-century’s greatest writers. Eliot turned to poetry because the cultural prestige of poetry offered her a chance to secure a literary legacy beyond that of a popular novelist. Known in her day as the “female Shakespeare” (Collins, Interviews 104, 140), Eliot consciously used her celebrity to promote her poetry and fashion an image of herself as a living sage.

By putting the poetic subject between the classical and the modern settings, it ventures an attempt to discuss the poetic subject as a Romanticist seeker for love and mean?ing. On the one hand, the subject craves for love and understanding from the feminine counterpart, who seems to represent the classical deal of love and meaning.
