Abstract:The architectural spirit of Sun Yatsen's Mausoleum lies in its open monumentality, i. e. the harmony between grandiosity and modesty as well as tradition and modernity. Sun Yatsen chose his bury-ground in Nanjing with the intention to leave behind a strong political symbol and to remind his comrades to go on with his ideal of reconstructing the country. Under the leadership of Kuomintang and with efforts of architects, the Mausoleum was endued with a grand, open, simple and elegant character. It became not only an embodiment of Sun Yatsen -symbol of a new age -and the sovereignty of a new nation, but also a public sphere of ritual ceremonies. With the constant solemn homage rituals, a national memory and sense of identity were established.

Abstract:In this article, I address the design of the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum in Nanjing (1925-31), the most important monument of republican China. By putting it in the context of Sun's ideal for a modern China, the historiography of Chinese architecture since the nineteenth century, various historical associations of competition proposals, the new commemoration rite the Chinese Nationalist Party developed for Sun, and the iconic needs in a cultural politics for awakening masses, I argue that Chinese-style architecture, rather than a readymade system, was an open-ended discourse, in which tradition was examined in relation to the new interest in international architecture. This is epitomized in the design of the mausoleum, in which various ideals for a modern Chinese monument-stylistic, functional, and symbolic-were conceived as part of an effort to fashion the new nation. Modern architecture, in this instance, must be understood as a material embodiment of the struggle to define a modern state.

Abstract:To commemorate the Dr. Sun Yatsen,Nanjing National Government built an ensemble of buildings with the nationwide people's help. The project designed by famous architect Lv Yanzhi won the top design prize, the massive memorial hall adopted modern technology, new materials while the modern technology imitated the Chinese traditional superior style, such as wooden and stone craft. All the building's component is harmony with details and showed the perfect scale.The monument erected on the traditional pedestal with curved tablet which is different to consistently use habit. The whole building was arranged along a middle axis with memorial hall and monument as the main construction. Based on the traditional memorial architecture style, most of buildings absorbed western technology such as new material,new construction. It displays the perfect site unity of commemorating Dr. Sun Yatsen and citizens' assembly.

Abstract:After Sun Yat-sen died, Kuomintang launched a nationwide worship for Sun. They wanted to spread the symbol of Sun and instill it into the everyday life of people. One important measure was to set up the memorial-week and memorial days of Sun Yat-sen. This paper will study how Kuomintang controlled the society and spread its ideology through the institution of Sun's memorial-week. It will also unveil the operation of modern political power behind the memorial-week campaign. In the meantime, it will inspect the responses from different walks of life and the special function of memorial-week during the period of the Anti-Japanese War. Due to its isolation from the masses and its serious corruption, Kuomintang actually failed to mobilize people by its ideology. However, Sun's symbol was spread broadly, constituting the collective memory of Sun in that period and affecting any new reception of Sun after 1949.

Abstract:SUN Yat-sen's Grand Funeral in 1929 was a representative of ritual politics in modern China. To highlight the unique status of SUN Yat-sen, Kuomintang gave him a “Party Funeral” rather than a State Funeral. One can see a miniature of Party-State in the organization of the final funeral of 1929, as well as a kind of down-indoctrinated worship of SUN Yat-sen in Kuomintang's propaganda. With serious ceremonies and grand scenes, the funeral was successful in general. It proves that Kuomintang has grasped both the tradition of Chinese political culture and modern skills of propaganda. However, there were dissenting voices from popular and the classes, which revealed that Party-State had not gained sufficiently social coherence.

Abstract:Between the modern and the tradition,was Sun Yat-sen playingas an adaptor or a contradictor? There is no definite answer among scholars.So does his attitude to Confucianism.Based on the analysis ofinteraction between Sun Yat-sen's thinking in culture and acting in politics,the author reviews this two shifts to Confucianism.The study shows,although on the surface,Sun Yat-sen indeed had "alienation" and "return" toConfucianism in different periods oflife,there is the consistency in his inmost thoughts.As to him,Confucianism occupies an important position in his ideology,and closely related to his political practice.As same as other typical Confucian scholar-officials,Sun Yat-sen gave a culture interpretation to his revolutionary cause.No matter success or fail,he owed much tothe inner dynamic ofConfucianis.

A Study of the Three Mausoleums of the Southern Han

Abstract:The three mausoleums of the Southern Han in Guangzhou are not isolated from other cultures, but closely related to the high-ranking tombs from other areas of the Five Dynasties. Liu Yin was not recognized as an emperor during his lifetime, and buried as a county king after his death, so the De Mausoleum of the Southern Han falls to the level of“county king”as a local vassal burial. Liu Yan claimed his emperorship and established a state, but he was an “internal emperor and external minister”. He called himself the “King of the Great Han” in formal diplomatic occasions, so the Kang Mausoleum was of a royal level.Before the death of Liu Sheng, the rise of the latter Zhou in the Central Plains caused his fear and anxiety.He “kept to the courtesy of his subjects”, so the Zhao mausoleum of the Southern Han was basically following the “county king” rule. The three mausoleums of the Southern Han reflect the political order between the Southern Han and the Middle Kingdom during the different periods of the Five Dynasties.

Abstract:On the 19th day of the third lunar month in 1644, Emperor Zongzheng of Ming Dynasty hung himself. People in the southeastern coastal area created a discourse of the Sun Birthday to commemorate him. After the establishment of Qing Dynasty, the symbolic meaning of "3. 19" changed from the revengement of the forefathers and monarchs to " the resistance of Qing Dynasty to restore Ming Dynasty" . When Emperor Zongzheng was put into the "3. 19" discourse as its subject matter, the date began its history of memory ( being remembered and forgotten) . From the vantage-point of the archeology of knowledge, the discourse, after its loss of national memory, existed long in the individual memory even up to the early 1900s. In the anti-Qing opposition of Manchu, the discourse was narrated in the context of a nation-state. As a result, it acquired its modern significance. Numerous discourses of this kind brought forth after the downfall of Qing Dynasty, however, are virtually the consequences of ideological conflicts.
“Sun Yat-sen Culture” – Socio-Cultural Brand for the Greater Bay Area of China and the World Consolidation

Abstract:Introduction. This article is devoted to the description of the phenomenon named after the Chinese revolutionary and thinker Sun Yat-sen, who lived at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The image of this outstanding representative of the South Chinese Lingnan (Cantonese) culture has been actively used by the Chinese government for more than 15 years to unite the population of the urban cluster of the Greater Bay Area (Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau) of South China. The paper discusses the cultural and historical context, the personality of the politician himself, the prerequisites for his personal “culture” formation, as well as the methods and goals of popularizing the “Sun Yat-sen culture.” Methods and Materials. A wide range of recently published works by Chinese and foreign researchers and publicists on related topics were reviewed, analyzed, and theoretically compiled. Analysis. The author fills in the gaps in understanding the connection between the features of Sun Yat-sen’s image and the current tasks of the Chinese state. The characteristic features of the personality and the “Sun Yat-sen figure” have been determined, and its functions have been identified. Results. As a result of the application of general scientific methods, the author comes to the conclusion that the “Sun Yat-sen culture” is introduced as a regional brand, a role model, a showcase, and a personal cultural brand of South China. This brand is being transformed from local to regional and wider by means of state popularization. This happens with the aim of strengthening socio-cultural ties in the Greater Bay Area, with the prospect of further uniting representatives of the “Chinese world” and more. The article also shows examples of the means of socio-cultural brand popularization and touches upon its correlation with the idea of “discursive power” in modern China.

Abstract:Sun Yat-sen was a great revolutionary.Li Gongzhong's "Sun Yat-sen: the Fluctuation of the Heroic Image in the Past Century" summarizes the formation process of Sun's heroic image of leadership,and explains its different connotations in the different historical periods,as well as its special significance to the modern society.What effect did the Revolution have in the end on the development of Chinese national capitalism? Shen Shipei's "The 1911 Revolution and the Development of National Capitalism",based on related data,holds that "the Revolution had long-term effect on the development of national capitalism in the Republican Period",which lasted into the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War.The secret parties were an important social power in the late Qing Dynasty.Liang Jiagui's "Secret Parties and the 1911 Revolution" expounds why the secret parties followed the leadership of the bourgeois revolutionists and its significance,and probes into the reasons that resulted in their separation.The Revolution prompted a change of Chinese thoughts on charity.Cai Qingyu's "The Change of Charitable Thoughts in the Late Qing Dynasty and the Early Republic of China",combing through the development and the change of Chinese charity thoughts in modern times,holds that this change was the transition of Chinese charity from traditional philanthropy to institutional and legal social security,and an indispensable loop in the history of Chinese charity.

Abstract:As an important embodiment and carrier of Chinese traditional culture, the rituals and ceremonies in heritage tourism not only carry profound spiritual and cultural connotations, such as respecting nature and worshiping ancestors, they also enable people to gain a sense of identity. Therefore, this paper aims to explore the relationship between heritage tourism and the politics of identity-building from the perspective of critical toponymy based on the case study of the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor. Drawing on five years' of fieldwork at the Mausoleum of the Yellow Emperor in Shaanxi Province, China, this paper unfolds how heritage tourism has evolved into a certain kind of political agenda and a social engineering of nation-building. Relying on in-depth interviews and R language text analysis, this paper examines how Chinese national identity is produced, performed, and established through landscape naming and ritual performance in heritage tourism. This paper finds that (1) the naming and interpretation of ancestral roots cultural landscapes, as well as ritual performance in heritage tourism, are closely associated with cultural representations and reproductions of national identity. (2) The naming and interpretation of landscapes, as well as the performance of ritual practices in heritage tourism, are closely associated with national history and mythology. The tourists' behaviors and emotions, as well as their performance and experiences during the ritual practice at the heritage tourism site, help to construct national identity. The cultural production and invention are combined with actions enacted by governments and local residents, as well as visitors from different backgrounds. (3) The mausoleum creates cultural links for Taiwanese tourists to understand their ancestral roots culture and thus to enhance their connection with the mainland. This paper tries to explore the relationship between heritage tourism and identity-building from the perspective of critical toponymy, which has implications for place branding and marketing projects when promoting ancestral roots culture and place-named tourism. This research not only helps the individuals to realize and reappreciate the value of traditional culture and heritage, it also motivates the individuals to rethink their responsibilities in cultural inheritance and the innovative development of culture. It also helps to enhance the consciousness of the people on both sides of the strait as a community of the Chinese nation, as well as to promote the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.

Abstract:Museum enterprise is an integral part of modern states, using the past to construct the present, promoting nationalism and patriotic citizenship, and appealing to domestic as well as foreign visitors. Objects and images are carefully selected to foster a sense of historical and cultural consciousness among the people. Many antiques and relics that the state preserves may be of little humanistic significance, but are intended to create national unity and legitimate the current regime against other political rivals (Hamlish, 2000; Coombes, 1988; Kaplan, ed., 1994). History museums in contemporary China are no exception (Cohen, 2009; Vickers, 2007; Carroll, 2005; Denton, 2005; Steiner, 1995). As Kelvin C. K. Cheung argues in chapter 2, after losing the civil war, Chiang Kai-Shek made the Republic of China on Taiwan the guardian of Han Chinese civilization, and founded the National Palace Museum in Taipei to display a thousand years of unbroken Chinese history. In a similar fashion, the Communists on the Mainland created a network of museums to eradicate feudalism and implement revolutionary change. The Museum of the Chinese Revolution in Tiananmen Square adhered to the red line of Maoism from the 1950s to the 1970s, and the exhibitions changed as frequently as the dominant ideology (Hung, 2005).

Abstract:Memory Studies, Volume 17, Issue 3, Page 581-598, June 2024. In memory studies, museums and memorials have been actively employed in constructing and reinterpreting the social memories of nation-states and sub-groups within national populations. As such, scholarly debates have often focused on the roles of social and political elites in creating national remembrance. This article provides an alternative theoretical and empirical lens that focuses on China's local memory practices and initiatives within the context of private museums and their dynamic interaction with the state. It examines how grassroots communities in Yan'an use private museum space to commemorate, interpret and negotiate local histories promoted by political elites. While local governments actively promote official sites of memory in Yan'an as the roots of Chinese communism for patriotic education, the private museum offers an alternative form of public space for social gatherings and memory transmission. Instead of promoting a grand narrative of the founding of the nation, the private museum focuses on local folk culture and the representation of the everyday landscape in response to rapid social change. Such forms of local commemoration are not driven by radical social movements that challenge the dominant historical narrative of ruling elites. Instead, they provide spaces for local communities to safely negotiate, communicate and sometimes compromise within and through official constraints. The findings contribute to our understanding of memory politics and its roles in shaping the state-society relationships of modern China.

Abstract:The core of Sun Yat-seng's ideology of the Principle of Democracy is to establish a bourgeois democratic republic to guarantee the people's full enjoyment of freedom and democracy,and to eliminate the pernicious influences of feudal tyranny with an ultimate aim to transfer the state power from the feudal emperor to all the people of China.The realization of the Principle of Democracy is one of Sun Yat-seng's dreams,for which he had struggled all his life.Sun Yat-seng's ideology of the Principle of Democracy is mainly composed of the following:the adocacy of democratic republicanism,the theory of revolutionary courses,the advocacy of equality and freedom,the etsablishment of a political system by the whole people,the distinguishability of state powers from the state functions,the specification of the Five Rights in the constitution,and the local autonomy.
