Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTAs) were respectively fabricated using traditional one-step oxidation and re-oxidation method on a titanium surface in fluorine-containing electrolytes. Microstructures, optical properties of specimen were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, digital microscope, field-emission scanning electron microscope and ultraviolet-visible spectroscope. Compared with the one-step oxidation, the resulted samples showed more uniform surface, longer tube length and statistical higher absorption in visible light region. Importantly, a new growth mechanism named template-induced growth model is proposed to explain the growth of TiO2-NTAs prepared by re-oxidation approach in present work. Besides, water contact angles of samples before and after irradiated by UV light were measured and discussed in detail. It is confirmed that samples obtained from re-oxidation method have more hydroxyl groups can be formed when irradiated by UV light, which lead to more sensitive light-induced hydrophilicity finally. The light-induced hydrophilic performance of TiO2-NTAs would be favorable to improve the likelihood of electrolyte contacting of the surface, which is useful in many realistic application instances. Abstract:Titania nanotube arrays (TNAs) as a hot nanomaterial have a unique highly ordered array structure and good mechanical and chemical stability, as well as excellent anticorrosion, biocompatible, and photocatalytic performance. It has been fabricated by a facile electrochemical anodization in electrolytes containing small amounts of fluoric ions. In combination with our research work, we review the recent progress of the new research achievements of TNAs on the preparation processes, forming mechanism, and modification. In addition, we will review the potential and significant applications in the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, solar cells, water splitting, and other aspects. Finally, the existing problems and further prospects of this renascent and rapidly developing field are also briefly addressed and discussed.

Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays have attract much attention due to its novel three-dimensional structure,big surface areas and special geometric structure.In this review, TiO2 nanotube arrays in situ grown on Ti substrate were fabricated by anodic oxidation and the development of electrolyte was summarized.The property of the TiO2 nanotube arrays were introduced, including the crystal structure, optical property, electrical characteristics and the catalytic activity.Moreover, the modification of TiO2 nanotube arrays was described in detail.The modification method contains metal ion doping,nonmetal ion doping,metal deposition,coupling with the conducting polymer, coupling with semiconductor and other modified approaches.The application in photoelectrocatalytic degradation of pollutions, photocatalytic water splitting, dye-sensitized solar cell,sensors and other fields were also inveatigated.Finally,the future studies on the morphology control and modification of TiO2 nanotube arrays were proposed.

Abstract:Nickel-titanium-oxide (Ni-Ti-O) nanotube arrays (NTAs) prepared on nearly equiatomic NiTi alloy shall have broad application potential such as for energy storage and biomedicine, but their precise structure control is a great challenge because of the high content of alloying element of Ni, a non-valve metal that cannot form a compact electronic insulating passive layer when anodized. In the present work, we systemically investigated the influence of various anodization parameters on the formation and structure of Ni-Ti-O NTAs and their potential applications. Our results show that well controlled NTAs can be fabricated during relatively wide ranges of the anodization voltage (5–90 V), electrolyte temperature (10–50°C) and electrolyte NH 4 F content (0.025–0.8 wt%) but within a narrow window of the electrolyte H 2 O content (0.0–1.0 vol%). Through modulating these parameters, the Ni-Ti-O NTAs with different diameter (15–70 nm) and length (45–1320 nm) can be produced in a controlled manner. Regarding potential applications, the Ni-Ti-O NTAs may be used as electrodes for electrochemical energy storage and non-enzymic glucose detection and may constitute nanoscaled biofunctional coating to improve the biological performance of NiTi based biomedical implants.

Abstract:The self-organized TiO2 nanotube arrays have a vast technology application prospect due to the high surface area and precisely controlled morphology.The present paper gives an overall review on TiO2 nanotubular layers prepared on titanium and its alloys substrates.The highly ordered nanotubes are fabricated by electrochemical anodization in electrolytes containing fluoride ion.The influence factors on the formation of TiO2 nanotubes,such as electrolytes,anodic potential,oxidation time,pH value and alloy substrates are analyzed in detail.A remarkable feature of nanotube layer with two distinct ordered tube sizes can be obtained on titanium alloys by anodization.The initiation and growth effects of two-size nanotubes are also deduced.Besides,the forming mechanism and modification(tubes doped with different elements) of TiO2 nanotubes are introduced.The doped TiO2 nanotube arrays show much higher improvement in photocatalytic and solar energy conversion than pure TiO2 nanotube arrays.Furthermore,the progress of as prepared TiO2 nanotubular arrays in dye-sensitized solar cell,photoelectrolysis water splitting,biomedical applications are summarized.The prospect of TiO2 nanotubular arrays is also viewed.

Abstract:The vertically aligned highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated by potentiostatic anodization of biologic Ti alloys(TLM) and pure Ti substrates, followed by annealing at 480 and 550 degrees C for 6 h. High-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was applied to characterize the original films. The phase of the film was characterized by XRD. The interfacial adhesion and bond strength between thin films coating and substrate were tested by scratch method. The results show that the films on the TLM alloy have high adhesion strength compared with them on pure Ti.

Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanotube arrays were prepared by anodization of Ti/Au/Ti trilayer thin film DC sputtered onto forged and cast Co-28Cr-6Mo alloy substrate at 400 °C. Two different types of deposited film structures (Ti/Au/Ti trilayer and Ti monolayer), and two deposition temperatures (room temperature and 400 °C) were compared in this work. The concentrations of ammonium fluoride (NH4F) and H2O in glycerol electrolyte were varied to study their effect on the formation of TiO2 nanotube arrays on a forged and cast Co-28Cr-6Mo alloy. The results show that Ti/Au/Ti trilayer thin film and elevated temperature sputtered films are favorable for the formation of well-ordered nanotube arrays. The optimized electrolyte concentration for the growth of TiO2 nanotube arrays on forged and cast Co-28Cr-6Mo alloy was obtained. This work contains meaningful results for the application of a TiO2 nanotube coating to a CoCr alloy implant for potential next-generation orthopedic implant surface coatings with improved osseointegrative capabilities.

Abstract:Titania nanotubes grown by anodic oxidation have intrigued the material science community by its many unique and potential properties, and the synthesis of technology is merging to its mature stage. The present review will focus on TiO2 nanotubes grown by self-organized electrochemical anodization from Ti metal substrate, which critically highlights the synthesis of this type of self-organized titania nanotube layers and the means to influence the size, shape, the degree of order, and crystallized phases via adjusting the anodization parameters and the subsequent thermal annealing. The relationship between dimensions and properties of the anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays will be presented. The latest progress and significance of the research on formation mechanism of anodic TiO2 nanotubes are briefly discussed. Besides, we will show the most promising applications reported recently in biomedical directions and modifications carried out by doping, surface modification, and thermal annealing toward improving the properties of anodically formed TiO2 nanotubes. At last, some unsolved issues and possible future directions of this field are indicated.

Abstract:Surface modification with oxide nanostructures is one of the efficient ways to improve physical or biomedical properties of shape memory alloys. This work reports a fabrication of highly ordered Ti-Ni-O nanotube arrays on Ti-Ni alloy substrates through pulse anodization in glycerol-based electrolytes. The effects of anodization parameters and the annealing process on the microstructures and surface morphology of Ti-Ni-O were studied using scanning electron microscope and Raman spectroscopy. The electrolyte type greatly affected the formation of nanotube arrays. A formation of anatase phase was found with the Ti-Ni-O nanotube arrays annealed at 450 °C. The oxide nanotubes could be crystallized to rutile phase after annealing treatment at 650 °C. The Ti-Ni-O nanotube arrays demonstrated an excellent thermal stability by keeping their nanotubular structures up to 650 °C.

Abstract:Uniform and highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated by the electrochemical anodic oxidation on Ti-6Al-4V surface, using graphite plate as cathode and ethylene glycol (EG) with addition of a certain amount of H2O and NH4F as electrolyte, and the anodization voltage went up to a presetting voltage by stepwise increment. The morphology, structure and composition of TiO2 nanotube arrays were characterized by SEM, EDS, XRD and XPS. The formation process of TiO2 nanotubes was introduced in brief. The experiments were arranged by an orthogonal experiment method and the experimental results showed that the formation of TiO2 nanotube arrays was influenced by not only each factor (F- content, H2O content, external voltage and duration), but also cross correlation among the four factors. The optimal condition was F- content 0.2 wt%, H2O content 4 vol%, external voltage 40 V and duration 1 h in the studied electrochemical system, and the length of obtained nanotubes was 1.5 microm, the outer diameter was approximately 100 nm and the aspect ratio was 15. As-formed nanotube arrays were amorphous and changed to anatase TiO2 after annealed at 500 degrees C for 2 h in air ambience. XPS survey spectra revealed the surface of as-formed nanotube arrays containing Ti, O, C, F and N. The nanotube arrays on Ti-6Al-4V surface with better thermo-stability and crystallinity would have great potential in biomaterials.

Abstract:A two-electrode technique has been employed to anodize Ti foils for obtaining highly oriented TiO2 nanotube (NT) arrays. The morphology of the NT arrays was characterized by scanning electron microscope. With increasing anodization time, the lengths and diameters of TiO2 NT arrays was added from 6.7 to 19.5 μm, and 90 to 110 nm, respectively. As confirmed by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra, the as-anodized TiO2 NTs were amorphous but transformed into anatase phase after thermal annealing at 450°C for 3 hours. Reflectance spectrum of TiO2 NT arrays showed that the layer with longer NTs can lower the reflectance in the visible spectrum because of the stronger light scattering effects of NTs, thus enhancing light harvesting from NTs. Dye-sensitized solar cells were fabricated using TiO2 NT arrays (tube-lengths: 6.7, 12.8, 16.3 and 19.5 μm). The characteristic of photocurrent density-voltage (J-V) showed that higher conversion efficiencies can be achieved with the longer NTs.

Abstract:Due to increased awareness and interest in the biomedical implant field as a result of an aging population, research in the field of implantable devices has grown rapidly in the last few decades. Among the biomedical implants, metallic implant materials have been widely used to replace disordered bony tissues in orthopedic and orthodontic surgeries. The clinical success of implants is closely related to their early osseointegration (ie, the direct structural and functional connection between living bone and the surface of a load-bearing artificial implant), which relies heavily on the surface condition of the implant. Electrochemical techniques for modifying biomedical implants are relatively simple, cost-effective, and appropriate for implants with complex shapes. Recently, metal oxide nanotubular arrays via electrochemical anodization have become an attractive technique to build up on metallic implants to enhance the biocompatibility and bioactivity. This article will thoroughly review the relevance of electrochemical anodization techniques for the modification of metallic implant surfaces in nanoscale, and cover the electrochemical anodization techniques used in the development of the types of nanotubular/nanoporous modification achievable via electrochemical approaches, which hold tremendous potential for bio-implant applications. In vitro and in vivo studies using metallic oxide nanotubes are also presented, revealing the potential of nanotubes in biomedical applications. Finally, an outlook of future growth of research in metallic oxide nanotubular arrays is provided. This article will therefore provide researchers with an in-depth understanding of electrochemical anodization modification and provide guidance regarding the design and tuning of new materials to achieve a desired performance and reliable biocompatibility.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (TiO2 NTAs) have attracted much interest due to their unique highly ordered array structure, outstanding properties, and potential applications in photo/photoelectrocatalytic degradation of pollutants, hydrogen production, supercapacitors, dye-sensitized solar cells, sensors, and biomedical devices. It has been fabricated via a facile electrochemical anodic oxidation of Ti substrate in fluoride-containing electrolytes. Combined with our previous work, we comprehensively review the recent progress of TiO2 TNAs on the synthesis processes, forming mechanism, and modification used to improve the photoelectric properties. In addition, this article summarizes some of the recent advances on the photo/photoelectrocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Besides, other applications and the future development of TiO2 TNAs are also briefly discussed and addressed.

Abstract:Fabrication, properties, and sensing applications of TiO 2 nanotubes have been reviewed, and the highly ordered TiO 2 nanotube arrays made by anodic oxidation in fluoride-contained electrolytes highlighted. The effect of anodization parameters (electrolyte, pH, and voltage) on the titania nanotube size and shape were discussed. The excellent biocompatibility of TiO 2 , the high orientation, the large surface area with tunable pore sizes, as well as the high electron transfer rate along with the nanotubes make TiO 2 nanotube array an ideal substrate for the sensor’s fabrication and application. The sensors based on the TiO 2 nanotube arrays for sensing hydrogen, oxygen, humidity, glucose and hydrogen peroxide all exhibited low detection limit, high stability, very good reproducibility and high sensitivity.
