Abstract:TiO2 nanotube arrays (TiO2-NTAs) were respectively fabricated using traditional one-step oxidation and re-oxidation method on a titanium surface in fluorine-containing electrolytes. Microstructures, optical properties of specimen were characterized by X-ray diffractometer, digital microscope, field-emission scanning electron microscope and ultraviolet-visible spectroscope. Compared with the one-step oxidation, the resulted samples showed more uniform surface, longer tube length and statistical higher absorption in visible light region. Importantly, a new growth mechanism named template-induced growth model is proposed to explain the growth of TiO2-NTAs prepared by re-oxidation approach in present work. Besides, water contact angles of samples before and after irradiated by UV light were measured and discussed in detail. It is confirmed that samples obtained from re-oxidation method have more hydroxyl groups can be formed when irradiated by UV light, which lead to more sensitive light-induced hydrophilicity finally. The light-induced hydrophilic performance of TiO2-NTAs would be favorable to improve the likelihood of electrolyte contacting of the surface, which is useful in many realistic application instances. Silver-Decorated Tio2 Nanorod Array Films with Enhanced Photoelectrochemical and Photocatalytic Properties

Abstract:Highly ordered TiO2 nanorod (TNR) array films decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) by a hydrothermal treatment and a successive ionic layer adsorption reaction (SILAR) technique. The amount of Ag NPs on the TNR can be controlled by changing the number of cycles in silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution. The morphology, structure, composition, optical, photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic properties of the Ag/TNR films were investigated in detail. The Ag/TNR films exhibit larger redshift of the absorption edges and higher absorption intensities in the visible light range. Furthermore, the Ag/TNR films sensitized with 5 SILAR cycles show the best photocurrent density (32 mu A/cm(2)) and photodegradation efficiency (95.52%), which is 5.7 and 1.3 times higher than that of pure TNR, respectively. The excellent properties can be ascribed to localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Ag NPs. The stability and reusability of the Ag/TNR films were also investigated. Therefore, the Ag/TNR films with high performance and stability can be used in potential applications. (C) 2016 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In the present review we try to give a comprehensive and most up to date view to the field, with an emphasis on the currently most investigated anodic TiO2 nanotube arrays. We will first give an overview of different synthesis approaches to produce TiO2 nanotubes and TiO2 nanotube arrays, and then deal with physical and chemical properties of TiO2 nanotubes and techniques to modify them. Finally, we will provide an overview of the most explored and prospective applications of nanotubular TiO2.

Abstract:Nanoscale engineering of regular structured materials is immensely demanded in various scientific areas. In this work, vertically oriented TiO2 nanotube arrays were grown by self-organizing electrochemical anodization. The effects of different fluoride ion concentrations (0.2 and 0.5 wt% NH4F) and different anodization times (2, 5, 10 and 20 h) on the morphology of nanotubes were systematically studied in an organic electrolyte (glycol). The growth mechanisms of amorphous and anatase TiO2 nanotubes were also studied. Under optimized conditions, we obtained TiO2 nanotubes with tube diameters of 70–160 nm and tube lengths of 6.5–45 μm. Serving as free-standing and binder-free electrodes, the kinetic, capacity, and stability performances of TiO2 nanotubes were tested as lithium-ion battery anodes. This work provides a facile strategy for constructing self-organized materials with optimized functionalities for applications.

Abstract:The formation of titanium oxide nanotube arrays on titanium substrates was investigated in HF electrolytes. Under optimized electrolyte and oxidation conditions, well-ordered nanotubes of titania were fabricated. Topologies of the anodized titanium change remarkably along with the changing of applied voltages, electrolyte concentration and oxidation time. Electrochemical determination and scanning electron microscope indicate the nanotubes are formed due to the competition of titania formation and dissolution under the assistance of electric field. A possible growth mechanism has also been presented.

Abstract:This comprehensive study highlights the outstanding physical and chemical properties of anodically crystallized TiO2 nanotube arrays, attributed to their substantial surface area and nano-scale thickness. The crystallization of amorphous TiO2 nanotubes plays a pivotal role from an applications perspective. Within this comprehensive review, our primary focus revolves around an in-depth exploration of various annealing techniques. We meticulously examine their advantages and limitations when compared to alternative methods. Moreover, our inquiry extends to scrutinizing the profound impact of morphology and crystal structure on anodically grown TiO2 nanotubes subjected to different annealing protocols. Consequently, the insights gleaned from this review transcend the realm of theoretical knowledge. Anodized TiO2 nanotube arrays are poised to find practical applications in pivotal domains such as water splitting, hydrogen generation, and solar cells. Moreover, they emerge as promising candidates for a wide array of micro and nano-scale applications, including drug delivery systems in the biomedical sector, as well as innovative electronic device and sensing approaches within the aerospace industry.

Abstract:This Article focuses on the fabrication of highly ordered nanotubes and some novel nanostructures of titania (TiO2) with a two-step anodization method. The first-step anodization was actually a pretreatment of the Ti foil surface and provided well-ordered imprints that served as a template for the further growth of nanotubes. As a result, the TiO2 nanotubes growing in the second-step anodization appreciably outperformed those fabricated with the conventional one-step Ti anodization in terms of size uniformity and arrangement orderliness. The parameters of the anodization were then modulated to obtain more complex structures. When the voltage in the second-step anodization was lower than that in the first-step anodization, a lotus root-shaped TiO2 nanostructure, in which each imprint contained several smaller nanopores, was achieved. When the second anodization was further divided into two stages, double-layered nanotube arrays were synthesized. They contained two distinctly separated parts, i.e., the bamboo-shaped upper one and the smooth-walled lower one. These results have demonstrated the effectiveness and controllability of the two-step anodization method in producing high-quality TiO2 nanotubes, which are believed to have potential applications in such fields as solar cells, photonic crystals, and hydrogen storage.

Abstract:Well-aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays were fabricated from anodization by a subsequent heat treatment. Rate performance and electrochemical properties of TiO2 nanotube arrays were studied intensively. The electrode exhibits excellent rate capabilities at various rates with an average coulombic efficiency reaching 95.6%. It is obvious that TiO2 nanotube array possesses high rate capability and excellent cycling stability.

Abstract:Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube array electrodes were successfully fabricated by a two-step anodization method on Ti sheet substrates in an electrolyte composed of ammonium fluoride, deionized water, and glycol. The tube wall was smooth, and the average internal and external diameters, wall thickness, and tube length achieved were 80 nm, 90 nm, 10 nm, and 9 μm, respectively. X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy results revealed that the TiO2 nanotube arrays presented an amorphous structure. When calcined at 300 °C, the arrays crystallized into the anatase phase, and the crystallization degree of the oxide layer increased as the temperature rose. Calcinating at 400 °C did not obviously disrupt the porous structure of the highly ordered arrays. However, higher temperature enlarged the diameter of the nanotube array and roughened the tube wall. When the temperature reached 600 °C, the nanotube mouth broke because of the excessive stress, causing the oxide layer’s thinness and nanotube mouth clogging. The photoelectric test showed that the electrode presented obvious photoresponse under 300–400 nm UV excitation (maximized at 360 nm). The degree of crystallization and the micro-structure of the oxide layer can significantly affect the photoelectric properties of the electrode. After calcination at 400 °C, the TiO2 nanotube arrays, with highly ordered tubular structure directly connected to the Ti substrate, can ensure the rapid transportation of photo-induced electrons to the Ti substrate, while the high crystallinity of the arrays can help reduce the defect density of the nanotube and extend the lifetime of the photo-induced carriers. The electrode showed the best photoelectric property, and the photocurrent intensity was maximized (29.6 μA). However, the calcination process with over-temperature resulted in substantial loss of the TiO2 oxide layer, mouth clogging, and a severe decline in the photoelectric properties.

Abstract:Highly ordered titanium oxide nanotube arrays were fabricated by titanium anodic oxidation in a glycol solution containing 5% ammonium fluoride.Influences of anodizing voltage and electrode distance on morphology of the nanotube arrays were investigated.By fine tuning the anodizing voltage,the inner diameter of the titanium oxide nanotube arrays ranged between 20~145 nm.Amost perfect and highly ordered titanium oxide nanopore arrays could also be prepared by properly controlling the distance between two electrodes.Moreover,the morphology variation of the highly ordered titanium oxide nanotube/nanopore arrays was explained by the current density distribution inside the titanium oxide film simulated by finite element analysis.

Abstract:Surface clean,highly ordered TiO2nanotube arrays were prepared by electrochemical anodic oxidation method with a mixture of ethylene glycol and ammonium fluoride as solution and high purity titanium plate as electrodes. The influence of the ammonium fluoride concentration,anodic oxidation voltage and time on the size and morphology of TiO2nanotubes were studied systematically in this work. Results show that surface clean and highly order TiO2nanotube arrays with a length of 50 μm and a diameter of 90 nm can be prepared by the anodic oxidation method when the fluoride content,the voltage and time of anodic oxidation are 0.3%,60 V and 13 hours,respectively.

Abstract:Highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays were successfully fabricated using ethanol and water mixture electrolytes (40 vol% ethanol and 0.2 wt% hydrofluoric acid) by a facile electrochemical anodization method. The as-prepared nanotube arrays were grown perpendicular to the titanium substrate with about 90 nm in diameter, 20 nm in wall thickness, and around 500 nm in length. The formation mechanism of the samples is briefly discussed. A blue shift in the spectrum of UV–Vis absorption was observed with respect to a piece of the sol–gel derived TiO2 film. Moreover, photocurrent response and photoelectrocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under ultraviolet light irradiation were adopted to evaluate the photoelectrocatalytic properties of the TiO2 nanotube arrays. We demonstrate that the highly ordered TiO2 nanotube arrays possess much better photoelectrocatalytic activity than the sol–gel derived TiO2 film and good stability.

Abstract:The preparation and application of TiO2 nanotube array are widely investigated in recent years. Anodic oxidation adopted to prepare TiO2 nanotube array has attracted intensive attention due to its simplicity, low cost and easy industrialization. The preparation of TiO2 nanotube array by anodic oxidation is reviewed in this paper. Key factors affecting the formation of anodic TiO2 nanotube array are discussed based on the formation mechanism of anodic TiO2 nanotube array. In combination with the results of our research group, how to adjust tube diameter, tube length, wall thickness, and improve the quality of surface morphology of anodic TiO2 nanotube array by changing voltage, potential sweep rate, electrolyte, temperature and oxidation time are summarized. Finally, the development on the doping of anodic TiO2 nanotube array is presented.

Abstract:Over the past ten years, self-aligned TiO2 nanotubes have attracted tremendous scientific and technological interest due to their anticipated impact on energy conversion, environment remediation and biocompatibility. In the present manuscript, we review fundamental principles that govern the self-organized initiation of anodic TiO2 nanotubes. We start with the fundamental question: Why is self-organization taking place? We illustrate the inherent key mechanistic aspects that lead to tube growth in various different morphologies, such as rippled-walled tubes, smooth tubes, stacks and bamboo-type tubes, and importantly the formation of double-walled TiO2 nanotubes versus single-walled tubes, and the drastic difference in their physical and chemical properties. We show how both double- and single-walled tube layers can be detached from the metallic substrate and exploited for the preparation of robust self-standing membranes. Finally, we show how by selecting the right growth approach to TiO2 nanotubes specific functional features can be significantly improved, e.g., an enhanced electron mobility, intrinsic doping, or crystallization into pure anatase at extremely high temperatures can be achieved. This in turn can be exploited in constructing high performance devices based on anodic TiO2 in a wide range of applications.

Abstract:The anodic formation of high-aspect-ratio titanium oxides (TiO2) nanotube arrays on titanium foils were investigated in N, N-dimethyl formamide electrolyte. The influences of reaction time and applied voltage on the formation of TiO2 nanotube arrays were examined. By tailoring the anodization conditions, high-aspect-ratio TiO2 nanotube arrays with a length of 22 mu m were obtained. The current work indicates that a protecting layer formed during the anodization is responsible for the formation of long TiO2 nanotubes. A light-to-energy conversion efficiency of 3.4% was obtained by using dye D102. This kind of high-aspect-ratio TiO2 nanotube arrays has potential applications in photovoltaic cells.

Abstract:Titania nanotube arrays were fabricated in deionize water and glycerol mixed electrolyte containing a certain amount of NH4F. Three different polishing methods were used for pretreatment of Ti substrates: polished by hand with abrasive paper, by polishing machine, or by chemical polishing fluid (HF:HNO3=1:4, in volumetric ratio). The morphology of three different samples were imaged by scanning electron microscopy, and their photoelectrical properties were studied as well. Experimental results showed that Titania nanotube arrays grown on the Ti substrate and polished by polishing fluid has highly-ordered and well-defined nanotube structure. The effects of anodization potential and duration on synthesis of highly-ordered TiO2nanotubes were also studied in this paper. Both the layer thickness and nanotube diameter linearly increase with the increasing potential. The layer thickness also increases with prolongation of anodization time. By optimizing the preparation conditions, we can successfully control the geometrical structure of TiO2nanotube arrays with diameters in the range between 50 and 200 nm and the layer thickness between 800 and 2000 nm.

Abstract:Vertically-oriented one-dimensional TiO2 nanotube (TNT) arrays have been fabricated by anodic oxidation using different electrolyte solvents, including ethylene glycol (EG), diethylene glycol (DEG), and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), in the presence of hydrofluoric acid (HF) or ammonium fluoride (NH4F). The influence of synthetic conditions, including the nature of the electrolyte and anodization voltage, on nanotube microstructure has been systematically investigated. Highly-ordered TNTs with tube length of similar to 0.5-26.7 mu m, inner diameter of similar to 13-201 nm, and outer diameter of similar to 28-250 nm have been obtained. The conversion of as-prepared TNT arrays from amorphous phase to crystalline structure has been achieved by a post-synthetic annealing at 500 degrees C for 3 h in oxygen ambient. The TNT arrays with tunable sizes and structures are attractive for use as electrode materials in fabrication of thin film solar cells and highly active photocatalysts.
