Abstract:Shape-morphing systems, which can perform complex tasks through morphological transformations, are of great interest for future applications in minimally invasive medicine1,2, soft robotics3–6, active metamaterials7 and smart surfaces8. With current fabrication methods, shape-morphing configurations have been embedded into structural design by, for example, spatial distribution of heterogeneous materials9–14, which cannot be altered once fabricated. The systems are therefore restricted to a single type of transformation that is predetermined by their geometry. Here we develop a strategy to encode multiple shape-morphing instructions into a micromachine by programming the magnetic configurations of arrays of single-domain nanomagnets on connected panels. This programming is achieved by applying a specific sequence of magnetic fields to nanomagnets with suitably tailored switching fields, and results in specific shape transformations of the customized micromachines under an applied magnetic field. Using this concept, we have built an assembly of modular units that can be programmed to morph into letters of the alphabet, and we have constructed a microscale ‘bird’ capable of complex behaviours, including ‘flapping’, ‘hovering’, ‘turning’ and ‘side-slipping’. This establishes a route for the creation of future intelligent microsystems that are reconfigurable and reprogrammable in situ, and that can therefore adapt to complex situations. A micromachine less than 100 micrometres across, made of arrays of nanomagnets on hinged panels, is encoded with multiple shape transformations and actuated with a magnetic field.

Once cooled, the actuated shape can be locked. Additionally, varying the particle loadings for heating enables sequential actuation. The integrated multifunctional shape manipulations are further exploited for applications including soft magnetic grippers with large grabbing force, reconfigurable antennas, and sequential logic for computing.</p>

Abstract:Remote manipulation of a micromachine under an external magnetic field is significant in a variety of applications. However, magnetic manipulation requires that either the target objects or the fluids should be ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic. To extend the applicability, we propose a versatile optical printing technique termed femtosecond laser-directed bubble microprinting (FsLDBM) for on-demand magnetic encoding. Harnessing Marangoni convection, evaporation flow, and capillary force for long-distance delivery, near-field attraction, and printing, respectively, FsLDBM is capable of printing nanomaterials on the solid-state substrate made of arbitrary materials. As a proof-of-concept, we actuate a 3D polymer microturbine under a rotating magnetic field by implementing gamma-Fe2O3 nanomagnets on its blade. Moreover, we demonstrate the magnetic encoding on a living daphnia and versatile manipulation of the hybrid daphnia. With its general applicability, the FsLDBM approach provides opportunities for magnetic control of general microstructures in a variety of applications, such as smart microbots and biological microsurgery.

Abstract:Untethered magnetoresponsive soft materials that can transform between various complex 3D shapes are of growing interests in diverse areas such as soft robotics, flexible electronics, and biomedical engineering. Previous approaches are difficult to precisely encode continuous 3D magnetization profiles in small‐scale 3D structures. Herein, a novel method to produce magnetoresponsive soft materials for shape‐morphing systems across different length scale is reported. The magnetization profiles are programmed by the mechanically‐guided 4D printing with high precision and time‐cost efficiency. A theoretical model and model‐based simulation method are developed to quantitatively predict shape‐morphing of printed structures under applied magnetic fields, and guide the design of complex 3D shapes. A broad set of structures with complex transformations are fabricated to illustrate the capability of the methods. Diverse typical functional applications from centimeter‐ to millimeter‐scale, including soft crawling robots, flexible grippers, bionic butterfly, and multistate magnetic switch, are further demonstrated.

Abstract:We report remote manipulation of micronanomachines containing magnetic nanoparticles. Surface-modified Fe(3)O(4) nanocrystals were synthesized as doping agents of the photopolymerizable resin, which was pinpoint written by femtosecond laser-induced two-photon photopolymerization to create microsprings. Owing to the nature of superparamagnetism of Fe(3)O(4) nanoparticles, force exerted to the microsprings relies sensitively on the field gradient of the external ferromagnet, and various motions like elongation, bending, and swing are achieved in a well-controllable remote manner. As a noncontact, sensitive, easy, and environmentally friendly approach, the magnetic driving of micronanomachines may play an important role for nano and biological applications.

Abstract:The ability to controllably manipulate magnetic skyrmions, small magnetic whirls with particle-like properties, in nanostructured elements is a prerequisite for incorporating them into spintronic devices. Here, we use state-of-the-art electron holographic imaging to directly visualize the morphology and nucleation of magnetic skyrmions in a wedge-shaped FeGe nanostripe that has a width in the range of 45-150 nm. We find that geometrically-confined skyrmions are able to adopt a wide range of sizes and ellipticities in a nanostripe that are absent in both thin films and bulk materials and can be created from a helical magnetic state with a distorted edge twist in a simple and efficient manner. We perform a theoretical analysis based on a three-dimensional general model of isotropic chiral magnets to confirm our experimental results. The flexibility and ease of formation of geometrically confined magnetic skyrmions may help to optimize the design of skyrmion-based memory devices.
