Abstract:Air pollution is a major challenge for the humankind Under the highly complex air pollution conditions in China, strong homogenous nucleation and multiphase heterogeneous processes coexist, coupling with strong atmospheric oxidizing capacity and ozone pollution. This complex air pollution, different from the "London smog" and the "Los Angeles photochemical smog", is a new type of " haze chemistry smog" pollution. "Haze chemistry" distinguishes from traditional homogeneous chemistry by surpassing its existing theoretical understandings. It is a type of air pollution chemistry that comprehensively studies the gas-liquid-solid multiphase processes, revealing the formation mechanism of PM2.5 and the non-linear relationship between PM2.5 and O-3 under typical multi-medium complex air pollution conditions. Understanding "haze chemistry" processes is crucial for precise control of complex air pollution in China and other countries. Here, we propose and summarize the concept of "haze chemistry", and discuss its further improvement, development, and application.

Abstract:Since 1971, it has been known that the atmospheric free radicals play a pivotal role in maintaining the oxidizing power of the troposphere. The existence of the oxidizing power is an important feature of the troposphere to remove primary air pollutants emitted from human beings as well as those from the biosphere. Nevertheless, serious secondary air-pollution incidents can take place due to fast oxidation of the primary pollutants. Elucidating the atmospheric free-radical chemistry is a demanding task in the field of atmospheric chemistry worldwide, which includes two kinds of work: first, the setup of reliable radical detection systems; second, integrated field studies that enable closure studies on the sources and sinks of targeted radicals such as OH and NO3. In this review, we try to review the Chinese efforts to explore the atmospheric free-radical chemistry in such chemical complex environments and the possible link of this fast gas-phase oxidation with the fast formation of secondary air pollution in the city-cluster areas in China.

Abstract:In this paper we present a review of atmospheric chemistry research in China over the period 2006–2010, focusing on tropospheric ozone, aerosol chemistry, and the interactions between trace gases and aerosols in the polluted areas of China. Over the past decade, China has suffered severe photochemical smog and haze pollution, especially in North China, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta. Much scientific work on atmospheric chemistry and physics has been done to address this large-scale, complex environmental problem. Intensive field experiments, satellite data analyses, and model simulations have shown that air pollution is significantly changing the chemical and physical characters of the natural atmosphere over these parts of China. In addition to strong emissions of primary pollutants, photochemical and heterogeneous reactions play key roles in the formation of complex pollution. More in-depth research is recommended to reveal the formation mechanism of photochemical smog and haze pollution and their climatic effects at the urban, regional, and global scales.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric chemistry research has been growing rapidly in China in the last 25 years since the concept of the “air pollution complex” was first proposed by Professor Xiaoyan TANG in 1997. For papers published in 2021 on air pollution (only papers included in the Web of Science Core Collection database were considered), more than 24 000 papers were authored or co-authored by scientists working in China. In this paper, we review a limited number of representative and significant studies on atmospheric chemistry in China in the last few years, including studies on (1) sources and emission inventories, (2) atmospheric chemical processes, (3) interactions of air pollution with meteorology, weather and climate, (4) interactions between the biosphere and atmosphere, and (5) data assimilation. The intention was not to provide a complete review of all progress made in the last few years, but rather to serve as a starting point for learning more about atmospheric chemistry research in China. The advances reviewed in this paper have enabled a theoretical framework for the air pollution complex to be established, provided robust scientific support to highly successful air pollution control policies in China, and created great opportunities in education, training, and career development for many graduate students and young scientists. This paper further highlights that developing and low-income countries that are heavily affected by air pollution can benefit from these research advances, whilst at the same time acknowledging that many challenges and opportunities still remain in atmospheric chemistry research in China, to hopefully be addressed over the next few decades.

Abstract:Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) pollution has become a major health threat accompanying the rapid economic development in China. For decades, filter-based offline chemical analyses have been the most widely adopted means to investigate PM and have provided much information for understanding this type of pollution in China. However, offline analyses have low time resolutions and the chemical information thus obtained fail to reflect the dynamic nature of the sources and the rapid processes leading to the severe PM pollution in China. In recent years, advances in real-time PM chemical characterization have created a new paradigm for PM studies in China. In this review, we summarize those advances, focusing on the most widely used mass spectrometric and ion chromatographic techniques. We describe the findings from those studies in terms of spatiotemporal variabilities, degree of neutralization and oxygenation, source apportionment, secondary formation, as well as collocated measurements of the chemical and physical (hygroscopic and optical) properties of PM. We also highlight the new insights gained from those findings and suggest future directions for further advancing our understanding of PM pollution in China via real-time chemical characterization.

Abstract:In large areas of China severe air pollution events pose a significant threat to human health, ecosystems and climate. Current reduction of primary emissions will also affect secondary pollutants such as ozone (O3) and particulate matter (PM), but the magnitude of the effects is uncertain. Major scientific challenges are related to the formation of O3 and secondary particulate matter including Secondary Organic Aerosols (SOA). Large uncertainties also remain regarding the interactions of soot, SOA and O3 under the influence of different SO2, NOX and VOC concentrations. To improve the understanding of these secondary atmospheric interactions in China, scientific areas of central importance for photochemically induced air pollutants have been identified. In addition to the scientific challenges, results from research need to be synthesized across several disciplines and communicated to stakeholders affected by air pollution and to policy makers responsible for developing abatement strategies. Abstract:Abstract Emissions caused by the use of coal and by traffic have caused serious photochemical smog and aerosol pollution with unique characteristics in most Chinese cities. This report gives an overview of aerosol concentrations in China based on data obtained from both the literature and recent research by the authors. The results show that TSP (total suspended particulate) and PM-10 (particles with aerodynamic diameter 10 µm) concentrations frequently exceed the National Ambient Air Quality Standard and that ambient aerosol concentrations constitute a serious air pollution problem. PM-2.5 concentrations are also high and account for 60 % of the PM-10 mass. Organic carbon and sulfate are the most abundant components of PM-2.5, while crustal elements represent a minor portion.Nitrate concentrations are almost the same as sulfate in summertime, which implies that NOx control is very important in lowering fine particle concentrations and in improving air visibility. The chemical mass balance (CMB) method was applied in Beijing to identify the sources of PM-2.5. The main sources include fugitive dust, coal burning/industrial processes, traffic emissions, and secondary aerosol produced by atmospheric chemical conversion.

Abstract:Severe air pollution and its associated health impacts have become one of the major concerns in China. Among all the air pollutants, ambient particles are of great interest to the scientific community and policy makers because of their ability to carry health risks, as well as influence air quality and global climate. The researches on chemical characteristics of particles remain key priorities since the mass and ratios of different components imply the various sources and formation mechanisms. It is crucial to develop detailed chemical databases of particles in China to precisely conduct source apportionment and evaluate environmental impacts. This paper elucidates chemical properties of PM2.5 at the particular sites and seasons in major regions of China. Characteristics of regional air pollutions are also analyzed by urban-regional pair studies. The formation of heavy pollution episodes is also discussed. Contributions of primary and secondary sources to the organic aerosols are investigated as well. Secondary organic aerosol (SOA) presents a major fraction of organic aerosol. Different from most of other cities in the world, anthropogenic SOA is dominant, suggesting reducing the anthropogenic VOCs is an efficient way to reduce organic aerosols in China. These studies help to improve the understanding of the current state of air pollution in diverse Chinese cities. Analysis of chemical signatures of PM2.5 could further assist as an input to model simulations and in policy making for emission control.
The interplays among meteorology, source, and chemistry in high particulate matter pollution episodes in urban Shanghai, China

Abstract:High particulate matter (PM) pollution episodes still occur occasionally in urban China, despite of improvements in recent years. Investigating the influencing factors of high-PM episodes is beneficial in the formulation of effective control measures. We herein present the effects of weather condition, emission source, and chemical conversion on the occurrence of high-PM episodes in urban Shanghai using multiple online measurements. Three high-PM episodes, i.e., locally-accumulated, regionally-transported, and dust-affected ones, as well as a clean period were selected. Stagnant air with temperature inversion was found in both locally-accumulated and regionally-transported high-PM episodes, but differences in PM evolution were observed. In the more complicated dust-affected episode, the weather condition interacted with the emission/transport sources and chemical conversion, resulting in consecutive stages with different PM characteristics. Specifically, there were (1) stronger local accumulation in the pre-dust period, (2) dust-laden air with aged organic aerosol (OA) upon dust arrival, (3) pollutants being swept into the ocean, and (4) back to the city with aged OA. Our results suggest that (a) local emissions could be rapidly oxidized in some episodes but not all, (b) aged OA from long-range transport (aged in space) had a similar degree of oxygenation compared to the prolonged local oxidation (aged in time), and (c) OA aged over land and over the ocean were similar in chemical characteristics. The findings help better understand the causes and evolution of high-PM episodes, which are manifested by the interplays among meteorology, source, and chemistry, providing a scientific basis for control measures.

Abstract:Abstract. The impact of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions to the atmosphere on the production of secondary pollutants, such as ozone and secondary organic aerosol (SOA), is mediated by the concentration of nitric oxide (NO). Polluted urban atmospheres are typically considered to be high-NO environments, while remote regions such as rainforests, with minimal anthropogenic influences, are considered to be low-NO. Policy to reduce urban air pollution is typically developed assuming that the chemistry is controlled by the high-NO regime. However, our observations from central Beijing show that this simplistic separation of regimes is flawed. Despite being in one of the largest megacities in the world, we observe significant formation of gas and aerosol phase oxidation products associated with the low-NO rainforest-like regime during the afternoon. This is caused by a surprisingly low concentration of NO, coupled with high concentrations of VOCs and of the atmospheric oxidant hydroxyl (OH). Box model calculations suggest that during the morning high-NO chemistry predominates (95 %) but in the afternoon low-NO chemistry plays a greater role (30 %). With increasing global emphasis on reducing air pollution, the modelling tools used to develop urban air quality policy need to adequately represent both high- and low-NO regimes if they are to have utility.

Abstract:Severe air pollution episodes have been frequent in China during the recent years. While high emissions are the primary reason for increasing pollutant concentrations, the ultimate cause for the most severe pollution episodes has remained unclear. Here we show that a high concentration of particulate matter (PM) will enhance the stability of an urban boundary layer, which in turn decreases the boundary layer height and consequently cause further increases in PM concentrations. We estimate the strength of this positive feedback mechanism by combining a new theoretical framework with ambient observations. We show that the feedback remains moderate at fine PM concentrations lower than about 200 μg m−3, but that it becomes increasingly effective at higher PM loadings resulting from the combined effect of high surface PM emissions and massive secondary PM production within the boundary layer. Our analysis explains why air pollution episodes are particularly serious and severe in megacities and during the days when synoptic weather conditions stay constant.

Abstract:The concentrations of ground-level ozone (O3) in China have undergone a rapid increase in recent years, resulting in adverse impacts on the air quality and climate change. However, limited research has been conducted on the coastal urban agglomerations with increasingly serious O3 pollution. Therefore, in order to better understand in situ photochemistry, comprehensive field observations of O3 and its precursors, coupled with the model simulation, were conducted in autumn of 2019 at six sites in an urban agglomeration along the coastline of southeastern China. Results indicated that O3 pollution in the southern part of the urban agglomeration was more severe than that in the northern part, due to higher levels of O3 precursors and stronger atmospheric oxidation capacity (AOC) in the southern regions. Oxygenated volatile organic compounds (OVOCs), NO2, and CO dominated the total OH reactivity, and the site-average daytime Ox (O3 + NO2) increments correlated well (R2 = 0.94) with the total OH reactivity of CO and VOCs at these sites except for Quanzhou, where industrial emissions (35.1 %) and solvent usages (33.7 %) dominated the VOC sources. However, vehicle exhausts (31.1 %) were the most predominant contributors to the VOC sources at other sites. The results of model simulations showed that net O3 formation rates were larger at the southern sites. Furthermore, O3 production was mainly controlled by VOCs at most sites, but co-limited by VOCs and NOx at Quanzhou. The most significant VOC groups contributing to O3 formation were aromatics and alkenes, with m/p-xylene, toluene, propene, and ethene being the main contributors at these sites. This study offers a more comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and formation of photochemical pollutions on the scale of the urban areas, indicating the critical need to reduce VOC emissions as a means of mitigating their photochemical effects.

Abstract:Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) pollution is still one of China's most important environmental issues, especially in northern cities during wintertime. In this study, intensive real-time measurement campaigns were conducted in Xi'an, Shijiazhuang, and Beijing to investigate the chemical characteristics and source contributions of PM 2.5 and explore the formation of heavy pollution for policy implications. The chemical compositions of PM 2.5 in the three cities were all dominated by organic aerosol (OA) and nitrate (NO 3- ). Results of source apportionment analyzed by a hybrid environmental receptor model (HERM) showed that the secondary formation source contributed more to PM 2.5 compared to other primary sources. Biomass burning was the dominant primary source in the three pilot cities. The contribution of coal combustion to PM 2.5 is non-negligible in Xi'an and Shijiazhuang but is no longer an important contributor in the capital city of Beijing due to the execution of a strict coal-banning policy. The potential formation mechanisms of secondary aerosol in the three cities were further explored by establishing the correlations between the secondary formation sources and aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) and O x (O 3 +NO 2 ) , respectively. The results showed that photochemical oxidation and aqueous-phase reaction were two important pathways of secondary aerosol formation. According to source variations, air pollution events that occurred in campaigns were classified into three types: biomass-combustion-dominated, secondary-formation-source-dominated, and a combination of primary and secondary sources. Additionally, this study compares the changes in chemical composition and source contributions of PM 2.5 in past decades. The results suggest that the clean-energy replacements for rural households should be urgently encouraged to reduce the primary source emissions in northern China, and collaborative control on ozone and particulate matter needs to be continuously promoted to weaken the atmosphere oxidation capacity for the sake of reducing secondary aerosol formation.

Abstract:To investigate the volatility of atmospheric particulates and the evolution of other particulate properties (chemical composition, particle size distribution and mixing state) with temperature, a thermodenuder coupled with a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer was used to conduct continuous observations of atmospheric fine particles in Chengdu, southwest China. Because of their complex sources and secondary reaction processes, the average mass spectra of single particles contained a variety of chemical components (including organic, inorganic and metal species). When the temperature rose from room temperature to 280°C, the relative areas of volatile and semi-volatile components decreased, while the relative areas of less or non-volatile components increased. Most (> 80%) nitrate and sulfate existed in the form of NH4NO3 and (NH4)2SO4, and their volatilization temperatures were 50–100°C and 150–280°C, respectively. The contribution of biomass burning (BB) and vehicle emission (VE) particles increased significantly at 280°C, which emphasized the important role of regional biomass burning and local motor vehicle emissions to the core of particles. With the increase in temperature, the particle size of the particles coated with volatile or semi-volatile components was reduced, and their mixing with secondary inorganic components was significantly weakened. The formation of K-nitrate (KNO3) and K-sulfate (KSO4) particles was dominated by liquid-phase processes and photochemical reactions, respectively. Reducing KNO3 and BB particles is the key to improving visibility. These new results are helpful towards better understanding the initial sources, pollution formation mechanisms and climatic effects of fine particulate matter in this megacity in southwest China.

Response of aerosol chemistry to clean air action in Beijing, China: Insights from two-year ACSM measurements and model simulations

Abstract:Despite substantial mitigation of particulate matter (PM) pollution during the past decade in Beijing, the response of aerosol chemistry to clean air action and meteorology remains less understood. Here we characterized the changes in aerosol composition as responses to emission reductions by using two-year long-term measurements in 2011/2012 and 2017/2018, and WRF-Chem model. Our results showed substantial decreases for all aerosol species except nitrate from 2011/2012 to 2017/2018. Chloride exhibited the largest decrease by 65-89% followed by organics (37-70%), mainly due to reductions in coal combustion emissions in winter and agriculture burning in June. Primary and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) showed comparable decreases by 61-70% in fall and winter, and 34-63% in spring and summer, suggesting that reductions in primary emissions might also suppress SOA formation. The changes in nitrate were negligible and even showed increases due to less reductions in NOx emissions and increased formation potential from N2O5 heterogeneous reactions. As a result, nitrate exceeded sulfate and became the major secondary inorganic aerosol species in PM with the contribution increasing from 14-21% to 22-32%. Further analysis indicated that the reductions in aerosol species from 2011/2012 to 2017/2018 were mainly caused by the decreases of severely polluted events (PM1 > 100 μg m-3). WRF-Chem simulations suggested that the decreases in OA and sulfate in fall and winter were mainly resulted from emission reductions (27-36% and 25-43%) and favorable meteorology (4-10% and 19-30%), while they were dominantly contributed by emission changes in spring and summer. Comparatively, the changes in nitrate were mainly associated with meteorological variations while the contributions of emissions changes were relatively small. Our results highlight different chemical responses of aerosol species to emission changes and meteorology, suggesting that future mitigation of air pollution in China needs species-targeted control policy.

Abstract:Due to profound impact on climate and human health, air quality has attracted attention from all levels of the civil society. The key step in the provision of required tools for the society to tackle the complex air quality problem is to characterize it in a comprehensive manner with a long-term perspective. Here, we describe a continuous and comprehensive observation station and its accompanying state-of-the-art instrumentation that was established to investigate the complex urban atmospheric environment in a rapidly developing Chinese Megacity. The station, located in downtown Beijing, aims to study air quality by identifying the major atmospheric pollutants and key processes determining their formation and loss mechanisms. A few hundreds of parameters are continuously measured with the state-of-the-art instruments, including trace gas concentrations, aerosol particle size distributions, and mass concentrations, covering aerosol particle chemical composition from molecules to micrometer-sized aerosol particles. This produced long-term, comprehensive big data with around 1 x 10 11 bytes per year. In this paper, we provide an overview on the facilities of the station, the instrumentation used, the workflow of continuous observations and examples of results from 2018 to 2019 and a basis for establishing a modern long-term, comprehensive atmospheric urban observation station in other megacities.
Chemical Boundary Layer and Its Impact on Air Pollution in Northern China

Abstract:Planetary boundary layer (PBL) meteorology plays a vital role in air pollution, which has drawn increasing attention due to its adverse eco-environmental impacts. Although recent observational studies suggested the vertical heterogeneity of pollutants in the PBL, the overall picture illustrating the structure of the chemistry is still not fully understood, especially for polluted regions in China. Here, wintertime observations of main gaseous and particulate pollutants together with aerosol components and ground-based lidar remote sensing, as well as model simulations, are integrated to better understand the chemical process related to PBL evolution. We find that the turbulent motion does shape chemistry stratification in the PBL, reflected especially by a steep ozone drop near the surface due to a strong titration effect. Furthermore, enhanced secondary production, like sulfate and nitrate aerosols, in the upper PBL and residual layer substantially contributes to near-surface haze pollution through vertical mixing. Abstract:China is rapidly developing as evidenced by enhanced urbanization and industrialization and greatly increased energy consumption. However, these have brought Chinese cities a variety of urban air pollution problems in recent decades. During the 1970s, black smoke from stacks became the characteristic of Chinese industrial cities; in the 1980s, many southern cities began to suffer serious acid rain pollution; and recently, the air quality in large cities has deteriorated due to nitrous oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and photochemical smog, which are typical of vehicle pollution. Some cities now have a mixture of these. Urban air pollution influences both the health of citizens and the development of cities. To control air pollution and protect the atmospheric environment, the Chinese government has implemented a variety of programs. This paper first reviews the current status of air quality in Chinese cities, especially key cities, then describes the characteristics of some major urban air pollutants, including total suspended particles (TSP), respirable particles 10 microns or less in diameter (PM10), very fine particles 2.5 microns or less in diameter (PM2.5), Sulfur dioxide (SO2), acid rain, NOx, and photochemical smog. Two specific topics, SO2 and acid rain control and vehicle emission control, are used to illustrate the actions that the government has taken and future plans. Finally, a case study of the Chinese capital, Beijing, is presented with a discussion of its main air pollution problems, recently implemented control measures and their effects, and future strategies for urban air quality improvement.
