Abstract:On the basis of the hard inclusion earthquake preparation model (HEPM for short) and referring intraplate earthquake preparation characteristics and geologic structure feature of North China,model of crustal structure of four layers with a hard inclusion,a soft inclusion and a vertical fault is constructed. Dynamic simulation on the space time distribution of deformation and stress fields near surface for the model is carried out. The results show that at beginning of earthquake preparation, deformation near surface of the hard inclusion in the model is relatively stable, a deformation gap is showed. During the medium short term period before earthquake, the deformation increased swiftly. Meanwhile, the average stress in the region strengthened obviously,which is the inner mechanism for migration of precursory anomalies with regularity from outer area to epicenter area of strong earthquake.

Abstract:The knowledge on properties and dynamics of earthquakes and faults remains highly incomplete despite considerable research spanning over 100 years.The main difficulties stem from the limited resolution of the available observations, strongly nonlinear behavior and other complexities in the governing physics, along with existence of multiscale multi-phase (solid, granular, fluid) crustal heterogeneities.Recent theoretical and technique developments, novel laboratory experiments, dense seismic arrays, and other high quality data sets provide new opportunities for advancing the understanding of earthquakes and fault zones.These and related topics were discussed in a workshop titled ''Frontiers in Studies of Earthquakes and Faults'', conducted during Nov 27-Dec 1, 2017 at the Southern University of Science and Technology, Shenzhen, China.The papers in this topical issue are based on presentations given at the workshop and additional contributions, and they describe the stateof-the-art in several key frontiers.Topics covered in this volume include analysis of earthquake source properties, models of dynamic ruptures and slow slip events, imaging fault zones and the crust, detection of small earthquakes, high-resolution results from laboratory fracturing experiments, quantifying temporal changes of seismic properties, inversions of focal mechanisms to stress and more.

Abstract:A multiscale approach [1] that couples the finite-element method (FEM) and the discrete-element method (DEM) is employed to model and analyse the earthquake fault rupture-soil-foundation interaction (FR-SFI) problem.In the approach, the soil constitutive responses are obtained from DEM solutions of representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the FEM integration points so as to effectively bypass the phenomenological hypotheses in conventional FEM simulations.The fault rupture surfaces and shear localization patterns under normal faults with or without foundation atop have been well captured by the multiscale approach and verified with available centrifuge experimental [2] and numerical results [3].By examining the responses and microstructural evolutions of local RVE packings, it is found that the RVEs located in-or outside the shear bands behave distinctly, and may change their stress states from initial at-rest to active in the normal fault case.The micromechanics study also sheds lights on the capability of heavy foundations in protecting the superstructure as a result of rupture surface diversion.

Abstract:Abstract The preparation process of natural earthquakes is still difficult to quantify and remains a subject of debate even with modern observational techniques. Here, we show that foreshock activity can shed light on understanding the earthquake preparation process based on results of meter-scale rock friction experiments. Experiments were conducted under two different fault surface conditions before each run: less heterogeneous fault without pre-existing gouge and more heterogeneous fault with pre-existing gouge. The results show that fewer foreshocks occurred along the less heterogeneous fault and were driven by preslip; in contrast, more foreshocks with a lower b value occurred along the more heterogeneous fault and showed features of cascade-up. We suggest that the fault surface condition and the stress redistribution caused by the ongoing fault slip mode control the earthquake preparation process, including the behavior of foreshock activity. Our findings imply that foreshock activity can be a key indicator for probing the fault conditions at present and in the future, and therefore useful for assessing earthquake hazard.

Abstract:Resolving rupture processes of great earthquakes has fundamental importance to the study of earthquake physics,rupture dynamics, fault zone structure, and evolving processes. It also plays an essential role in earthquake hazard estimation,emergency response and seismic hazard mitigation. This paper reviews the major progress of the earthquake rupture process studies in the last decades, with an emphasize on the research directions of the department geophysics of Peking University including real-time response, back-projection techniques, geodetic data analysis, joint inversion and inversion in complex earth medium. We discussed the advantages and limitations of tradition methods; proposed a systematic and integrated approach from fast-response to detailed study. We also raised perspectives of using source models for ground motion prediction and the possibility of full-dynamic inversion.
A laboratory perspective on accelerating preparatory processes before earthquakes and implications for foreshock detectability

Abstract:Dynamic failure in the laboratory is commonly preceded by many foreshocks which accompany premonitory aseismic slip. Aseismic slip is also thought to govern earthquake nucleation in nature, yet, foreshocks are rare. Here, we examine how heterogeneity due to different roughness, damage and pore pressures affects premonitory slip and acoustic emission characteristics. High fluid pressures increase stiffness and reduce heterogeneity which promotes more rapid slip acceleration and shorter precursory periods, similar to the effect of low geometric heterogeneity on smooth faults. The associated acoustic emission activity in low-heterogeneity samples becomes increasingly dominated by earthquake-like double-couple focal mechanisms. The similarity of fluid pressure increase and roughness reduction suggests that increased stress and geometric homogeneity may substantially shorten the duration of foreshock activity. Gradual fault activation and extended foreshock activity is more likely observable on immature faults at shallow depth.

Abstract:We combined novel laboratory techniques and numerical modeling to investigate (a) seismic preparatory processes associated with deformation localization during a triaxial failure test on a dry sample of Berea sandstone. Laboratory observations were quantified by measuring strain localization on the sample surface with a distributed strain sensing (DSS) array, utilizing optical fibers, in conjunction with both passive and active acoustic emission (AE) techniques. A physics-based computational model was subsequently employed to understand the underlying physics of these observations and to establish a spatio-temporal correlation between the laboratory and modeling results. These simulations revealed three distinct stages of preparatory processes: (i) highly dissipative fronts propagated towards the middle of the sample correlating with the observed acoustic emission locations; (ii) dissipative regions were individuated in the middle of the sample and could be linked to a discernible decrease of the P-wave velocities; (iii) a system of conjugate bands formed, coalesced into a single band that grew from the center towards the sample surface and was interpreted to be representative for the preparation of a weak plane. Dilatative lobes at the process zones of the weak plane extended outwards and grew to the surface, causing strain localization and an acceleration of the simulated deformation prior to failure. This was also observed during the experiment with the strain rate measurements and spatio-temporally correlated with an increase of the seismicity rate in a similar rock volume. The combined approach of such laboratory and numerical techniques provides an enriched view of (a)seismic preparatory processes preceding the mainshock.

Off-fault deformation feedback and strain localization precursor during laboratory earthquakes

Abstract:Recent large-scale seismological observations have shown that off-fault strain localization and foreshock migration could serve as an early warning of an impending earthquake. However, this process is still largely unknown. In this study, state-of-the-art friction experiments were conducted in a oil-confined biaxial shear apparatus to investigate the link between stick-slip nucleation and off-fault deformation. Our findings indicate that there is a direct link between stick-slip nucleation and off-fault deformation, provided that the fault is conditionally unstable (a - b < 0). Inelastic off-fault deformation may trigger unstable slip by decreasing the stiffness of the surrounding rock volume, which favors earthquake nucleation. Additionally, the study presents laboratory observation of precursory strain localization around a fault during stick-slip cycles. These findings suggest that volumetric deformation processes could be a main factor in the nucleation of large ruptures and strain localization could be a reliable harbinger of large earthquakes.

Abstract:Strong earthquakes rank among the most devastating natural disasters, with the potential to inflict catastrophic damage on communities and critical infrastructure worldwide. The structural geological and geophysical study of seismogenic features remains a cornerstone of earthquake research, providing essential insights into the dynamic processes driving these powerful events. High-resolution investigations in geomorphology, stratigraphy, and structural geology allow for a detailed understanding of the spatial and temporal characteristics of seismic deformations, encompassing co-seismic, post-seismic, and inter-seismic stages, potentially spanning multiple earthquake cycles. The integration of cutting-edge techniques—such as high-resolution data from Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR), Structure from Motion (SfM), geophysical surveys, drilling, and frictional laboratory experiments—coupled with precise dating methods, enables quantitative analysis at high spatial resolutions across diverse temporal ranges, from years to millions of years. Recent advancements in frictional experimental techniques and numerical modeling have also significantly refined our understanding of deformation processes within seismogenic structures. This special issue compiles research on tectonic activities related to seismogenic structures from varied global tectonic setting, with a focus on leveraging high-resolution spatial data and sophisticated dating techniques. The contributions aim to deepen our understanding of the dynamics underlying strong earthquakes and improve our capacity for seismic hazard assessment.

Abstract:Understanding rock shear failure behavior is crucial to gain insights into slip-related geohazards such as rock avalanches, landslides, and earthquakes. However, descriptions of the progressive damage on the shear surface are still incomplete or ambiguous. In this study, we use the hybrid finite-discrete element method (FDEM) to simulate a shear experiment and obtain a detailed comprehension of shear induced progressive damage and the associated seismic activity. We built a laboratory fault model from high resolution surface scans and micro-CT imaging. Our results show that under quasi-static shear loading, the fault surface experiences local dynamic seismic activities. We found that the seismic activity is related to the stress concentration on interlocking asperities. This interlocking behavior (i) causes stress concentration at the region of contact that could reach the compressive strength , and (ii) produces tensile stress up to the tensile strength in the region adjacent to the contact area. Thus, different failure mechanisms and damage patterns including crushing and sub-vertical fracturing are observed on the rough surface. Asperity failure creates rapid local slips resulting in significant stress perturbations that alter the overall stress condition and may trigger the slip of adjacent critically stressed asperities. We found that the spatial distribution of the damaged asperities and the seismic activity is highly heterogeneous; regions with intense asperity interactions formed gouge material, while others exhibit minimal to no damage. These results emphasize the important role of surface roughness in controlling the overall shear behavior and the local dynamic seismic activities on faults.

Numerical Simulation on Faulting: Microscopic evolution, macroscopic interaction and rupture process of earthquakes

Abstract:We review the recent researches of numerical simulations on faulting, which are interpreted in this paper as the evolution of the state of the fault plane and the evolution of fault structure. The theme includes the fault constitutive (friction) law, the properties of the gauge particles, the initial phase of the rupture, the dynamic rupture process, the interaction of the fault segments, the fault zone dynamics, and so on. Many numerical methods have been developed: boundary integral equation methods (BIEM), finite difference methods (FDM), finite or spectral element methods (FEM, SEM) as well as distinct element methods (DEM), discrete element methods (again DEM) or lattice solid models (LSM). The fault dynamics should be solved as a complex non-linear system, which shows multiple hierarchical structures on its property and behavior. The researches have progressively advanced since the 1990's both numerically and physically thanks to high performance computing environments. The interaction at small scales is modeled to provide a large scale property of the fault. The dynamic rupture has been actively studied especially for the effect on the fault geometry evolution or due to the existed fault structure. The (quasi-)static and the initial processes of the fault movement have been also explored in a seismic cycle. The effect of fluid or heat has been also taken into account in the mechanics. All these efforts help us to understand the phenomena and the unified understanding (simulation) over different spacio-temporal scales is more and more expected.

EARTHQUAKE DYNAMICS: SOURCE DISTRIBUTION WITH RESPECT TO LITHOSPHERIC RHEOLOGY

Abstract:Earthquake source distribution strongly depends on temperature and pressure conditions of the tectonic environments. Focal mechanism complicates the temperature-pressure conditions of the lower stability transition at the brittle-ductile transition boundary of the continental crust, a transition from velocity weakening (seismic) to velocity strengthening (non-seismic). Plate boundary associated earthquakes such as interface and intraslab events are studied on a platform of lithospheric rheology and crust-mantle dynamics. Brittle friction bears dynamic constraints on depth distribution of subduction interface earthquakes. Deep earthquakes, including subduction intraslab events, are not well explained by frictional shearing mechanism, for which a candidate mechanism appears to be associated with solid-solid phase transition at high pressure and temperature conditions where a brittle rupture or frictional processes may not be plausible. Rheological properties relevant to physics of earthquake focus and source depth distribution are critically reviewed based on theoretical and experimental research.

A topic of significant interest for the scientific community is to elaborate on the phenomena governing the faulting and fracturing of crustal rocks. Therefore, in this study, uniaxial compressive shear failure experiments were conducted on Fangshan marble rock samples with a prefabricated slot to simulate thrust faulting. The center of each marble plate (105 mm × 80 mm × 5 mm) was engraved with a 30-mm long double-sided nonpenetrating slot (depth: 2 mm, width: 0.5 mm). The deformation and destruction processes of the rock surface were recorded using a high-speed camera. The digital image correlation method was used to calculate the displacement and strain distribution and variation at different loading stages. The accumulative and incremental displacement fields u and v, strain field ex and ey, and shear strain exy were analyzed. When the loading level reached its ultimate value, the strain field was concentrated around the prefabricated slot. The concentration reached a maximum at the ends of the prefabricated slot. The magnitude of shear strain reached 0.1. This experiment contributes to our understanding of the dynamic process of active faulting.

Abstract:Performing stimulation experiments at approximately 1 km depth in the Bedretto Underground Laboratory for Geosciences and Geoenergies necessitates identifying and characterizing the target fault zone for on-fault monitoring of induced fault slip and seismicity, which presents a challenge when attempting to understand seismogenic processes. We discuss the multidisciplinary approach for selecting the target fault zone for experiments planned within the Fault Activation and Earthquake Ruptures (FEAR) project, for which the aim is to induce the fault slip and seismicity for an earthquake magnitude of up to 1.0 while enhancing the monitoring and control of fluid-injection experiments.

Abstract:Large earthquakes are among the most dangerous natural disasters with potentially devastating effects on society and infrastructure across the globe. In order to better understand earthquakes, research in active tectonics aims at quantifying crustal deformation throughout the active fault's earthquake cycles by studying geomorphic and stratigraphic evidence of recent and past earthquakes. The underlying assumption in this approach is that a fault's current and previous seismic behavior is representative of its future behavior. Constraining a fault's seismic behavior in such a manner requires high-resolution geomorphic and stratigraphic records that enable us to resolve the spatial and temporal characteristics of co-, post-, and interseismic phases, ideally over multiple earthquake cycles. Recent technological developments have dramatically increased not only the amount and resolution of topographic and geophysical survey data sets but also our ability to date stratigraphic units and geomorphic surfaces. These technological advances have enabled us to better understand the interplay between crustal deformation, earthquake ruptures, and their signature in geomorphic and stratigraphic records. In particular, the availability of high-resolution data sets from LiDAR, SfM, or geophysical surveys and the use of accurate dating methods such as cosmogenic or OSL dating allow us to quantitatively study surface deformation at high spatial resolution over large areas and at multiple time scales—from a few years to millions of years. In this special issue, we focus on the tectonic activity of active faults and the geomorphic processes in various tectonic regimes worldwide. It covers active tectonics, earthquake geology, remote sensing, tectonic geomorphology, Quaternary geochronology, geohazard, and seismology.
