Abstract:Valorizing plastic waste into value-added chemicals/fuels in a green manner (e.g., electrochemical reforming) is a sustainable way to address the global pressing plastic pollution. For the electro-reforming of plastic waste (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate (PET)), the development of highly active and selective catalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we have designed a low-cost and highly defective nickel sulfide to selectively convert ethylene glycol (PET monomer) into formate, with the co-production of hydrogen fuel. The optimal B and Co co-doped Ni3S2 (B,Co-NiS) only takes 1.341 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at 100 mA cm-2 for ethylene glycol oxidation, and it can realize high Faradic efficiency (> 93%) and selectivity (> 92%) for EG-to-formate conversion over a wide potential range. Furthermore, the bifunctional B,Co-NiS assisted real PET waste hydrolysate electrolysis in a membrane-electrode assembly (MEA) can generate 15.24 mmol formate per hour and attain over 70 times H2 production efficiency than conventional water electrolysis. Mechanism analyses indicate the excellent catalytic performance of B,Co-NiS stems from the hierarchical structure, rich S defective sites, regulated electronic properties, and the dopants-facilitated in situ formation of active sulfide@oxyhydroxide phase. This work provides an integrated nanostructure control-composition regulation strategy to design cost-effective catalysts for plastic electro-upcycling and paves the way for low-carbon plastic waste management.

Abstract:Sustainable conversion of plastic waste to mitigate environmental threats and reclaim waste value is important. Ambient-condition photoreforming is practically attractive to convert waste to hydrogen (H2); however, it has poor performance because of mutual constraint between proton reduction and substrate oxidation. Here, we realize a cooperative photoredox using defect-rich chalcogenide nanosheet-coupled photocatalysts, e.g., d-NiPS3/CdS, to give an ultrahigh H2 evolution of ∼40 mmol gcat-1 h-1 and organic acid yield up to 78 μmol within 9 h, together with excellent stability beyond 100 h in photoreforming of commercial waste plastic poly(lactic acid) and poly(ethylene terephthalate). Significantly, these metrics represent one of the most efficient plastic photoreforming reported. In situ ultrafast spectroscopic studies confirm a charge transfer-mediated reaction mechanism in which d-NiPS3 rapidly extracts electrons from CdS to boost H2 evolution, favoring hole-dominated substrate oxidation to improve overall efficiency. This work opens practical avenues for converting plastic waste into fuels and chemicals.

Abstract:Treating hazardous waste Ni from the electroplating industry is mandated world-wide, is exceptionally expensive, and carries a very high CO 2 footprint. Rather than regarding Ni as a disposable waste, the chemicals and petrochemicals industries could instead consider it a huge resource. In the work described herein, we present a strategy for upcycling waste Ni from electroplating wastewater into a photothermal catalyst for converting CO 2 to CO. Specifically, magnetic nanoparticles encapsulated in amine functionalized porous SiO 2 , is demonstrated to efficiently scavenge Ni from electroplating wastewater for utilization in photothermal CO 2 catalysis. The core-shell catalyst architecture produces CO at a rate of 1.9 mol·g Ni −1 ·h −1 (44.1 mmol·g cat −1 ·h −1 ), a selectivity close to 100%, and notable long-term stability. This strategy of upcycling metal waste into functional, catalytic materials offers a multi-pronged approach for clean and renewable energy technologies.

Abstract:Excessive CO 2 emission and plastic waste pollution constitute two pressing threats to our environment. Effective tactics are urgently demanded to address these issues. Herein, we report that the thermal treatment of plastic wastes in the presence of nickel chloride, melamine, and KCl/LiCl salt mixture produces atomic nickel and nitrogen-doped carbon materials (Ni–N–C), which are proven to be effective for electrocatalytic CO 2 conversion. We disclose that the treating temperature and the activation of molten KCl/LiCl play critical roles in fabricating Ni–N–C with high porosity, abundant Ni sites, and good charge transfer ability. As a result, Ni–N–C-800 prepared from polyethylene terephthalate bottles exhibits good performance in electrochemical CO 2 -to-CO conversion. Importantly, a large current density of 400 mA cm −2 and a high faradaic efficiency of 90% for CO production can be achieved in the flow cell, which endows Ni–N–C-800 with great prospects for industrial applications. Furthermore, we show that the thermal treatment of other plastic wastes such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride can also yield effective Ni–N–C catalysts, demonstrating good universality of upcycling plastic wastes to efficient catalysts. This study puts forward a sustainable solution for the simultaneous valorization of both CO 2 and plastic wastes.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution, an emerging environmental issue, poses significant threats to aquatic ecosystems and human health. In tackling microplastic pollution and advancing green hydrogen production, this study reveals a tandem catalytic microplastic degradation-hydrogen evolution reaction (MPD-HER) process using hierarchical porous carbon nitride-supported single-atom iron catalysts (FeSA-hCN). Through hydrothermal-assisted Fenton-like reactions, we accomplish near-total ultrahigh-molecular-weight-polyethylene degradation into C3-C20 organics with 64% selectivity of carboxylic acid under neutral pH, a leap beyond current capabilities in efficiency, selectivity, eco-friendliness, and stability over six cycles. The system demonstrates versatility by degrading various daily-use plastics across different aquatic settings. The mixture of FeSA-hCN and plastic degradation products further achieves a hydrogen evolution of 42 μmol h‒1 under illumination, outperforming most existing plastic photoreforming methods. This tandem MPD-HER process not only provides a scalable and economically feasible strategy to combat plastic pollution but also contributes to the hydrogen economy, with far-reaching implications for global sustainability initiatives.

Abstract:Plastic valorization presents a significantly untapped opportunity to address environmental issues while creating the necessary economic push for a circular carbon economy. Compared with the conventional routes for processing plastics (e.g., pyrolysis and gasification), a photoreforming strategy, namely, photocatalytic plastic oxidation paired with water splitting, aims to achieve plastic valorization into commodity chemicals under mild conditions while offering hydrogen fuels. Here, we implement MoS2-tipped CdS nanorod photocatalysts in an aqueous medium to reform pretreated plastics that range from polyesters (e.g., polylactic acid (PLA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)) to polyolefins (e.g., polyethylene (PE)). The architecture of MoS2/CdS takes advantage of the anisotropic morphology and rapid charge transfer features of nanorods, by collecting the electrons at the MoS2 tip for hydrogen evolution and utilizing the entire sidewall of CdS nanorods with rich holes toward plastic oxidation. It is shown that continuous H2 can be evolved from photoreforming of PLA, PET (commercial PET granules and real-world PET bottles), and PE, while these plastic substrates are accordingly converted into a series of valuable chemicals. This work provides an effective way to harness solar energy to realize the transformation of trash (plastics) to treasure (gaseous/liquid chemicals).

Abstract:AbstractWith large quantities and natural resistance to degradation, plastic waste raises growing environmental concerns in the world. To achieve the upcycling of plastic waste into value‐added products, the electrocatalytic‐driven process is emerging as an attractive option due to the mild operation conditions, high reaction selectivity, and low carbon emission. Herein, this review provides a comprehensive overview of the upgrading of plastic waste via electrocatalysis. Specifically, key electrooxidation processes including the target products, intermediates and reaction pathways in the plastic electro‐reforming process are discussed. Subsequently, advanced electrochemical systems, including the integration of anodic plastic monomer oxidation and value‐added cathodic reduction and photo‐involved electrolysis processes, are summarized. The design strategies of electrocatalysts with enhanced activity are highlighted and catalytic mechanisms in the electrocatalytic oxidation of plastic waste are elucidated. To promote the electrochemistry‐driven sustainable upcycling of plastic waste, challenges and opportunities are further put forward.

Abstract:The plastic waste issue has posed a series of formidable challenges for the ecological environment and human health. While conventional recycling strategies often lead to plastic down-cycling, the electrochemical strategy of recovering valuable monomers enables an ideal, circular plastic economy. Here a corrosion synthesized single atom Pt1/Ni(OH)2 electrocatalyst with part-per-million noble Pt loading for highly efficient and selective upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into valuable chemicals (potassium diformate and terephthalic acid) and green hydrogen is reported. Electro-oxidation of PET hydrolysate, ethylene glycol (EG), to formate is processed with high Faraday efficiency (FE) and selectivity (>90%) at the current density close to 1000 mA cm-2 (1.444 V vs RHE). The in situ spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations provide insights into the mechanism and the understanding of the high efficiency. Remarkably, the electro-oxidation of EG at the ampere-level current density is also successfully illustrated by using a membrane-electrode assembly with high FEs to formate integrated with hydrogen production for 500 h of continuous operation. This process allows valuable chemical production at high space-time yield and is highly profitable (588-700 $ ton-1 PET), showing an industrial perspective on single-atom catalysis of electrochemical plastic upcycling.

Abstract:Developing cost-effective and efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen production is of paramount importance to attain a sustainable energy future. Reported herein is a novel three-dimensional hierarchical architectured electrocatalyst, consisting of platinum-copper-nickel nanoparticles-decorated carbon nanofiber arrays, which are conformally assembled on carbon felt fabrics (PtCuNi/CNF@CF) by an ambient-pressure chemical vapor deposition coupled with a spontaneous galvanic replacement reaction. The free-standing PtCuNi/CNF@CF monolith exhibits high porosities, a well-defined geometry shape, outstanding electron conductivity, and a unique characteristic of localizing platinum-copper-nickel nanoparticles in the tips of carbon nanofibers. Such features render PtCuNi/CNF@CF as an ideal binder-free HER electrode for hydrogen production. Electrochemical measurements demonstrate that the PtCuNi/CNF@CF possesses superior intrinsic activity as well as mass-specific activity in comparison with the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts, both in acidic and alkaline solutions. With well-tuned composition of active nanoparticles, Pt42Cu57Ni1/CNF@CF showed excellent durability. The synthesis strategy reported in this work is likely to pave a new route for fabricating free-standing hierarchical electrodes for electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Plastic wastes were catalytically transformed into different structured carbons as effective catalysts for peroxymonosulfate activation to degrade organic pollutants in water and the catalytic conversion mechanism was comprehensively investigated. A salt template-based carbonization approach was successfully developed to catalytically converting high-density polyethylene (HDPE) into diverse carbon materials, such as core-shell carbon composites, nanosheets, and their hybrids. The morphology and proportions of structure defective carbon were found to be controlled by a NiCl 2 to HDPE ratio. Carbon nanosheets performed excellent catalytic efficiency in peroxymonosulfate activation toward phenol oxidation, due to a high content of reactive defects via a nonradical electron-transfer mechanism. More importantly, deliberate experiment design and kinetic analyses were employed to illustrate the artifact of radical scavengers (e.g., ethanol) in mechanistic investigation for nonradical/radical reaction. This work provides an upcycle approach for waste plastics into carbocatalysts and new insight to the conversion process and advanced water purification.

Abstract:Developing a facile and cost-efficient method to synthesize carbon-based nanomaterials possessing excellent structural and functional properties has become one of the most attractive topics in energy conversion and storage fields. In this study, density functional theory calculation results reveal the origin of high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity predominantly derived from the synergistic effect of intrinsic defects and heteroatom dopants (e.g., N, S) that modulate the bandgap and charge density distribution of carbon matrix. Under the guidance of the first-principle prediction, by using ultralight biomass waste as precursor of C, N, and S elements, a defect-rich and N/S dual-doped cheese-like porous carbon nanomaterial is successfully designed and constructed. Herein, the intrinsic defects are artfully generated in terms of alkaline and ammonia activation. The electrochemical measurements display that such a material owns a comparable ORR activity (E1/2 = 0.835 V) to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, along with splendid durability and methanol tolerance in alkali media. Furthermore, as cathode catalyst, it displays a high Zn-air battery performance. The excellent ORR activity of the catalyst can be attributed to its unique 3D porous architecture, abundant intrinsic defects, and high-content active heteroatom dopants in the carbon matrix.

Abstract:Plastics are omnipresent in our everyday life, and accumulation of post-consumer plastic waste in our environment represents a major societal challenge. Hence, methods for plastic waste recycling are in high demand for a future circular economy. Specifically, the degradation of post-consumer polymers towards value-added small molecules constitutes a sustainable strategy for a carbon circular economy. Despite of recent advances, chemical polymer degradation continues to be largely limited to chemical redox agents or low energy efficiency in photochemical processes. We herein report a powerful iron-catalyzed degradation of high molecular weight polystyrenes through electrochemistry to efficiently deliver monomeric benzoyl products. The robustness of the ferraelectrocatalysis was mirrored by the degradation of various real-life post-consumer plastics, also on gram scale. The cathodic half reaction was largely represented by the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The scalable electro-polymer degradation could be solely fueled by solar energy through a commercially available solar panel, indicating an outstanding potential for a decentralized green hydrogen economy.

Abstract:The abundant plastic wastes become an imperative global issue, and how to handle these organic wastes gains growing scientific and industrial interest. Recently, converting plastic wastes into hydrogen fuel has been investigated, and the “waste-to-value” practice accelerates the circular economy. To accelerate the development of plastic-to-hydrogen conversion, in this review, recent advances in plastic-to-hydrogen conversion via thermochemical, photocatalytic, and electrocatalytic routes are analyzed. All of the thermo-, photo-, and electrochemical processes can transform different plastic wastes into hydrogen, and the hydrogen production efficiency depends heavily on the selected techniques, operating parameters, and applied catalysts. The application of rational-designed catalysts can promote the selective production of hydrogen from plastic feedstocks. Further studies on process optimization, cost-effective catalyst design, and mechanism investigation are needed.

Artificial photosynthesis, compared with the conventional strategies (e.g., pyrolysis) operated under harsh conditions, has emerged as a green and sustainable approach to convert plastic waste into commodity chemicals under ambient conditions. In this study, we have developed a partially oxidized CuIn5S8 nanosheet photocatalyst (O-CuIn5S8) to promote the conversion of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste into value-added chemicals while producing hydrogen fuel. After oxygen incorporation, the as-obtained O-CuIn5S8 catalyst demonstrates significantly improved activity, with a hydrogen evolution rate of 2.57±0.02 mmol g-1 h-1, which is 7 times higher than that of the pristine CuIn5S8. Furthermore, O-CuIn5S8 allows an effective transformation of pretreated PET into a range of valuable commodity chemicals, including formate, acetate, and glycolate, via a hole-induced oxidation mechanism. This work paves the way for the rational development of photocatalysts to manage plastic pollution and meanwhile reclaim the carbon source within PET plastic waste.

Abstract:Waste plastic is one of the most concerned solid waste issues all over the world. Converting waste plastics into high value-added hydrogen (H2) has attracted considerable attention. Herein, we reported on the innovative strategy of producing highly pure (91.5 vol%) H2 from non-recyclable waste plastics through microwave-induced reactions over the iron/nickel nanoparticles supported by cerium oxide with carbon nanotube substrates (Fe/Ni-CeO2 @CNTs). The chemical structure of the catalyst was optimized, and the reaction mechanism of microwave-induced catalytic pyrolysis was also researched. The synergistic effects of dehydrogenation on Fe/Ni bimetallic particles and the reforming reaction induced by CeO2 contributed to the remarkable H2 selectivity and high H2 yield. The catalyst also showed excellent stability and robustness after 5 regeneration cycles. High-valued carbon nanotubes are also generated, achieving nearly zero carbon emission.

Abstract:The preparation of waste plastics-derived catalysts is an effective strategy for the waste reclamation. However, plastic-derived material is unsuitable for wastewater purification due to its small specific surface area (SSA) and inadequate active sites (such as N/O sites). Herein, we synthesized graphene-like nanosheets using g-C3N4 as the self-sacrificing soft template and plastic as the carbon precursor. Consequently, this strategy greatly promoted the efficiencies of the emerging organic pollutants degradation with the SSA and N content of the plastic-derived biochar increasing up to 1043.4 m2/g and 17.53 at.%, respectively. In detail, 100 % sulfadiazine (SD) removal could be achieved in 180 s via the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and the catalytic activity is far higher than previous research. Mechanism experiments corroborated that such a striking performance was attributed to the generation of SO4 center dot-, O2 center dot � and 1O2. Meanwhile, kinds of plastic precursors, even medical waste (i.e., masks, gauze, operating caps and degreasing cotton) were also applicable. And the practical application of the plasticderived catalyst was further demonstrated by treating pollutants in a continuous flow mode with in situ fabricated membrane. This work provides valuable insights into waste plastics processing and water pollutants removal.
