At the end of this chapter, we will prospect the potential directions of plasmonic integrated optics.

Abstract:The nonlinear optical effects originating from the light-matter interaction under intense light excitations have enabled numerous novel applications, such as frequency conversion, all-optical modulation, and ultrafast optical switching. Recent years, the development of metamaterials, photonic crystals, and topological optics allow unconventional enhanced nonlinear effects that may potentially exceed traditional nonlinear materials. In this chapter, we discuss the concepts of nonlinear optical effects and introduce several nonlinear optical applications, including broadband terahertz source based on plasmonic metasurfaces, nonlinear Fano resonances, and nonlinear interaction of topological graphene plasmons.

Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:As typical one‐dimensional nanostructures for waveguiding tightly confined optical fields beyond the diffraction limit, metal nanowires have been used as versatile nanoscale building blocks for functional plasmonic and photonic structures and devices. Metal nanowires, especially those fabricated by bottom‐up synthesis such as Ag and Au nanowires, usually exhibit excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness with diameters down to tens of nanometers, which offers great opportunities for plasmonic waveguiding of optical fields with deep‐subwavelength confinement, coherence maintenance and low scattering losses. Based on nanowire plasmonic waveguides, a variety of applications ranging from plasmonic couplers, interferometers, resonators to photon emitters have been reported in recent years. In this article, significant progresses in these nanowire plasmonic waveguides, circuits and devices are reviewed. Future outlook and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.

Abstract:The coupling of light to collective oscillation of electrons on the metal surface allows the creation of surface plasmon-polariton wave. This surface wave is of central interest in the field of plasmonics. In this paper, we will present a brief review of this field, focusing on the plasmonic waveguide and plasmonic transmission. In the plasmonic waveguide, the light can be guided along the metal surface with subwavelength lateral dimensions, enabling the possibility of high-density integration of the optical elements. On the other hand, in the plasmonic transmission, the propagation of light through a metal surface can be tailored with the subwavelength holes, leading to the anomalous transmission behaviors which have received extensive investigations in recent years. In addition, as a supplement to plasmonics in the visible and near-infrared region, the study of THz plasmonics has also been discussed.

Abstract:The properties of propagating surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) along one-dimensional metal structures have been investigated for more than 10 years and are now well understood. Because of the high confinement of electromagnetic energy, propagating SPPs have been considered to represent one of the best potential ways to construct next-generation circuits that use light to overcome the speed limit of electronics. Many basic plasmonic components have already been developed. In this review, researches on plasmonic waveguides are reviewed from the perspective of plasmonic circuits. Several circuit components are constructed to demonstrate the basic function of an optical digital circuit. In the end of this review, a prototype for an SPP-based nanochip is proposed, and the problems associated with building such plasmonic circuits are discussed. A plasmonic chip that can be practically applied is expected to become available in the near future.

Abstract:Nanoplasmonics is an emerging field of nanophotonics, where electrons oscillate coherently and collectively inside nanostructures as surface plasmons. Properties of nanoplasmonics are strongly related to materials and nanostructures, with associated resonant wavelengths covering ranging from ultraviolet, visible, near infrared to far infrared. By overcoming the light diffraction limit, nanoplasmonic structures could tightly confine the optical field and energy at nanoscale, which leads to various novel applications for both fundamental research and industry. Especially, nanoplasmonics could remarkably enhance various light-matter interactions, such as Raman scattering, fluorescence, photovoltaic conversion, photothermal conversion, photoacoustic effect, magneto-optic effect and photocatalysis. These topics have been intensively investigated both theoretically and experimentally, pushing this field forward continuously. In this article, basic physical principles and influencing factors of nanoplasmonics will be briefly introduced first, then we will review principles and applications of various nanoplasmonics-enhanced light-matter interactions. This article provides useful guidelines for constructing high-performance devices and technologies in nanoplasmonics.

Abstract:In this article, we reviewed new designs for plasmonic nanostructure and its nanofocusing, coupling, resonance, and waveguide characterizations. With in-plane Fresnel zone plates, a 15 times field enhancement was achieved for the plasmonic nanofocusing. Plasmonic antennas placed at both ends of a single nanowire, consisting of a nanooptical circuit, was successfully realized in an enhanced plasmon coupling and emission. Plasmonic Fano resonance was also observed in a single sliced Ag nanodisk with the structure symmetry breaking. A hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a CdS nanoribbon placed on Ag surface showed an excellent mode confinement and energy low dissipation. More potential applications based on these plasmonic configurations are also discussed in this article.

Abstract:We review here our recent studies on plasmonic enhanced photothermal effects in metallic nanostructure, and the applications of such effects. When light is shined on a prefect metamaterial absorber patterned with e-beam lithography, the gold nanoparticles (NPs) forming the absorber can be either transformed to nano-spherical-domes, or to truncated-octahedral shaped or multi-twined nanocrystals with large crystal grain sizes and flat boundary facets. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the gold NPs can be also observed. Evidences clearly show that the surface melting and the coalescence mechanism play a key role on nanocrystals formation. These melted gold nanospheres can even be transferred to another substrate, on which the transferred NPs exhibit excellent size uniformity. The strong photothermal effects can also be utilized to tune silicon photonics waveguides and resonators. It is shown that all-optical photothermal switching of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI), silicon disk resonators, and silicon ring resonators is possible with the help of plasmonic nanoheaters. The switching response time and power consumption are all at reasonably low level.
Plasmonic Waveguides to Enhance Quantum Electrodynamic Phenomena at the Nanoscale

Abstract:The emerging field of plasmonics can lead to enhanced light matter interactions at extremely nanoscale regions. Plasmonic (metallic) devices promise to efficiently control both classical and quantum properties of light. Plasmonic waveguides are usually used to excite confined electromagnetic modes at the nanoscale that can strongly interact with matter. The analysis of these nanowaveguides exhibits similarities with their low frequency microwave counterparts. In this article, we review ways to study plasmonic nanostructures coupled to quantum optical emitters from a classical electromagnetic perspective. These quantum emitters are mainly used to generate single photon quantum light that can be employed as a quantum bit or qubit in the envisioned quantum information technologies. We demonstrate different ways to enhance a diverse range of quantum electrodynamic phenomena based on plasmonic configurations by using the classical dyadic tensor Green function formalism. More specifically, spontaneous emission and superradiance are analyzed by using the Green function based field quantization. The exciting new field of quantum plasmonics will lead to a plethora of novel optical devices for communications and computing applications operating in the quantum realm, such as efficient single-photon sources, quantum sensors, and compact on-chip nanophotonic circuits.

Abstract:Plasmonic waveguides are proposed to transmit information optically from one electronic component to another in integrated nanoelectronic circuits. A metal–insulator–metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide, rather than a traditional dielectric waveguide or an electric wire, is used for data transmission. The MIM plasmonic waveguide confines plasmonic (electromagnetic) waves to a dielectric slot with a cross-section of 50nm×50nm, and propagates them close to the speed of light. Two nanorods that form a nanoantenna are employed to receive the optical power from the waveguide, and localize as well as concentrate the received power in the proximity around the two nanorods. The localized optical power is converted to electric signals by a nanoscale plasmonics-to-electronics converter, which has a nanosized active volume and a bandwidth of up to 1THz. Both the plasmonic waveguide and the converter have nanoscale dimensions comparable to those of modern nanoelectronic counterparts. The proposed method could be used to improve the performance of existing nanoelectronic systems by exploiting the strength of optics.

Abstract:Plasmons, the electromagnetic excitations coupled with electron waves, possess the intrinsic ability of manipulating light at subwavelength scales down to picometer. This ability not only helps uncovering the fascinating quantum behaviors that strengthen the basic understanding of quantum science, but also enables the inventions of various quantum optoelectronic devices, triggering the birth of quantum plasmonic technology. The past decade has witnessed the flourishing of this technology. In this review, we first focus on fundamental investigations into quantum behaviors for both "isolated" plasmonic nanostructures and "coupled" plasmon-emitter systems, emphasizing new theoretical frameworks and experimental advances. Leveraging on these fundamentals, the progress in exploring and applying quantum plasmonic devices is discussed, such as quantum plasmonic circuits, nanolasers, biochemistry, and spin-orbit interaction devices. Upon summarizing the past and present developments, the future research directions and promising applications are highlighted.

Abstract:Plasmonic phenomena on the surface between metal and dielectric have received extensive attention, and have boosted a series of exciting techniques. Plasmonics describes the interaction between light and electronics and shows great potential in nanophotonics, optoelectronic devices, quantum physics, and surface-enhanced spectroscopy, etc. However, plasmonic phenomena are always suffering from the inherent loss issue of plasmonic materials at optical frequency, which has restricted further applications of plasmonics. In this review, we focus on the technique of waveguide effective plasmonics, which is a feasible low-loss realization of plasmonic metamaterials in lower frequency based on the structural dispersion. This review provides the underlying physics of the waveguide effective plasmonics and its applications varying from classical plasmonic concepts to novel effective plasmonic devices. Finally, we make a brief discussion on the direction of future researches and a prospect of the potential applications.
