Abstract:The single mode hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide is presented at the wavelength of 1.55 mu m. We show that this waveguiding structure, consisting of a low-index SiO2-stripe sandwiched between a high-index Si-nanowire and a silver film, achieves both long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity. Components such as 90 degrees-circular and S-shaped bends, based on the proposed waveguide with an intensity confinement area of 50x200 nm(2), can obtain a total transmission efficiency exceeding 85% for various bend radii. Finally, we demonstrate that the efficient directional couplers can be developed using two coupled waveguides. In particular, we determine the typical coupling lengths and maximum transfer power for different structural parameters of the coupler. Abstract:Key challenge in the design of plasmonic nano-waveguide is to simultaneously achieve high confinement and low propagation loss. This paper presents that a planar hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic nano-waveguide (HDLW) could be a promising candidate to build high-performance plasmonic components. Our studies show that the HDLW can achieve better trade-off between the field intensity confinement and the propagation length than a metal-insulator-metal nanoslot waveguide does. Consequently, a 90°-circular bend built with the HDLW can achieve a total loss of 0.3 dB with a small bending radius of 2μm. A ring resonator formed with the HDLW shows the excellent performance: with a ring radius of 5 μm, this resonator exhibits a large free spectral range (22 nm), a narrow bandwidth (4 nm), and high extinction ration (20 dB). The superior performance of these plasmonic components makes them promising building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:This paper proposed to use plasmonic waveguides for on-chip nanoscale optical data transmission. To optically transmit data between electronic devices, plasmonic devices, such as plasmonic sources, modulators, waveguides, switches, filters and detectors are needed. A novel planar hybrid plasmonic waveguide (PHPW), which consists of a low-index stripe sandwiched between a high-index nanowire and a metallic film is reported. A highly confined hybrid mode is formed in the low-index stripe as the result of interaction between photonic mode and plasmonic mode. The combination of the plasmonic and photonic modes across the low-index stripe can simultaneously achieve long propagation length and strong field confinement with high power intensity in the PHPW. The PHPW is based on a planar structure, offering additional degrees of freedoms to design a large variety of high-performance passive and active plasmonic devices such as waveguide bends, waveguide couplers and ring resonators.

Abstract:We propose a novel surface plasmon-polariton waveguide constructed by a wedge-to-wedge structure. The waveguide is based on the metal-insulator-metal mechanism, which enables nanometer light confinement and keeps longer propagation length at the telecom wavelengths.

Abstract:As typical one‐dimensional nanostructures for waveguiding tightly confined optical fields beyond the diffraction limit, metal nanowires have been used as versatile nanoscale building blocks for functional plasmonic and photonic structures and devices. Metal nanowires, especially those fabricated by bottom‐up synthesis such as Ag and Au nanowires, usually exhibit excellent diameter uniformity and surface smoothness with diameters down to tens of nanometers, which offers great opportunities for plasmonic waveguiding of optical fields with deep‐subwavelength confinement, coherence maintenance and low scattering losses. Based on nanowire plasmonic waveguides, a variety of applications ranging from plasmonic couplers, interferometers, resonators to photon emitters have been reported in recent years. In this article, significant progresses in these nanowire plasmonic waveguides, circuits and devices are reviewed. Future outlook and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Nanowires supporting propagating surface plasmons can function as nanowaveguides to realize the light guiding with field confinement beyond the diffraction limit, providing fundamental building blocks for nanophotonic integrated circuits. This review covers the recent developments of plasmon waveguiding in nanowires, mainly including plasmon waveguiding in metal nanowires, coupling of nanowire plasmons and emitters, hybrid nanowire waveguides and plasmonic gain, and nanowire photonic devices. We first introduce the main techniques for fabricating metal nanowires, the plasmon modes in metal nanowires and the excitation/detection methods. We then discuss the fundamental properties of plasmon propagation and emission, including zigzag, chiral and spin-dependent propagation, mode conversion, loss and propagation length, group velocity, terminal emission, and leaky radiation. Then the interactions between nanowires and emitters are reviewed, especially the coupling of single nanowires and single quantum emitters. Finally, we briefly introduce the hybrid nanowire waveguide composed of a semiconductor nanowire and a metal film with an intervening thin insulator and highlight a few nanophotonic devices based on plasmonic nanowire networks or plasmonic-photonic hybrid nanowire structures.

Abstract:A 170 nm wide hybrid plasmonic waveguide with a loss of 0.08 dB/μm is demonstrated experimentally. Directional couplers with different gaps and microdisks with 0.5 μm radius based on such waveguides are also presented.

Abstract:The key challenge of the plasmonic waveguide is to achieve simultaneously both the long propagation length and high confinement. The hybrid dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguide consists of a SiO 2 stripe sandwiched between a Si-nanowire and a silver film and thus promises as a best candidate to overcome this challenge. We propose to exploit this unique property of this structure to design different high-efficient silicon-based plasmonic components including waveguide, power splitter, and wavelength-selective ring resonator. As a result, the proposed power splitter with a waveguide cross section ( λ 2 /60) and a strong mode confinement area (~ λ 2 /240) features a low power transmission loss (<0.4 dB) at the optimal arm length of 4 μm with respect to different separation distances of output arms. Moreover, we also demonstrate that a plasmonic ring resonator with a compact ring radius of 2 μm may achieve high optical performance such as high-extinction ratio of 30 dB, large free spectral range of 67 nm, and small bandwidth of 0.6 nm. These superior performances make them promising building blocks for integrated nanophotonic circuits.

Abstract:Recently hybrid plasmonic waveguides have been proposed and attracted much attention as a good option to realize a nano-scale light confinement as well as a relatively long propagation distance. Furthermore, hybrid plasmonics waveguides offer a way to transfer and process both photonic and electronic signals along the same plasmonic circuit, which is desirable in order to combine the advantage of both photonics and electronics for high-speed signal processing and an easy realization of active components. In this paper, we give a review for our recent work on silicon hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides and devices.

Abstract:A new hybrid plasmonic waveguide is introduced and characterized in the paper. By coupling the photonic modes of a Si waveguide with the higher-order plasmonic modes of a silver nanowire, we demonstrate that the resultant hybrid modes possess small mode areas and long propagation distances, as well as high excitation efficiency (~90%) from the conventional dielectric modes. Such hybrid waveguides may find applications in the high-dense photonic integrations.

Abstract:Planar lightwave circuits (PLC) based on nanophotonic waveguides are becoming more and more attractive because of their ultrasmall sizes and possibility for realizing large scale monolithic integration with a very high integration density. In this paper we discuss two attractive types of nanophotonic waveguides based on dielectrics or metals. For the dielectric type, a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) strip waveguide is considered, and ultra-compact photonic integrated devices such as polarization-insensitive arrayed waveguide grating (de)multiplexers are obtained. Based on the fact that light can be confined tightly in a single interface between a metal and dielectric, a surface plasmon (SP) waveguide can offer a tight confinement for the light field. The cross-sectional size of an SP waveguide could be pushed down to tens of nanometers, i.e. beyond the diffraction limit. An accurate anaylysis for an SP waveguide formed by a dielectric nano-trench in a metal is presented. A novel subwavelength index-guided multimode plasmonic waveguide is introduced and an ultra-compact MMI power splitter is designed.

Abstract:Plasmonic waveguides are proposed to transmit information optically from one electronic component to another in integrated nanoelectronic circuits. A metal–insulator–metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide, rather than a traditional dielectric waveguide or an electric wire, is used for data transmission. The MIM plasmonic waveguide confines plasmonic (electromagnetic) waves to a dielectric slot with a cross-section of 50nm×50nm, and propagates them close to the speed of light. Two nanorods that form a nanoantenna are employed to receive the optical power from the waveguide, and localize as well as concentrate the received power in the proximity around the two nanorods. The localized optical power is converted to electric signals by a nanoscale plasmonics-to-electronics converter, which has a nanosized active volume and a bandwidth of up to 1THz. Both the plasmonic waveguide and the converter have nanoscale dimensions comparable to those of modern nanoelectronic counterparts. The proposed method could be used to improve the performance of existing nanoelectronic systems by exploiting the strength of optics.

Abstract:Recently hybrid plasmonic waveguides have been becoming very attractive as a promising candidate to realize next-generation ultra-dense photonic integrated circuits because of the ability to achieve nano-scale confinement of light and relatively long propagation distance. Furthermore, hybrid plasmonic waveguides also offer a platform to merge photonics and electronics so that one can realize ultra-small optoelectronic integrated circuits (OEICs) for high-speed signal generation, processing as well as detection. In this paper, we gave a review for the progresses on various hybrid plasmonic waveguides as well as ultrasmall functionality devices developed recently.

Abstract:In this paper,our recent theoretical and experimental results on silicon hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides and integrated devices are reviewed.First,we present several types of silicon hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides,which enable the confinement of optical field within the lateral scale of 100 nm,as well as a ~ 102μm propagation distance.Second,several kinds of submicron photonic integrated devices like power splitters,ultra-compact polarization beam splitters and resonators are presented by using silicon hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides.Finally,the coupling between silicon hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides and silicon nanowires,as well as the loss compensation of silicon hybrid nanoplasmonic waveguides with gain mediums has also been discussed.

Abstract:The emerging field of nanophotonics1 addresses the critical challenge of manipulating light on scales much smaller than the wavelength. However, very few feasible practical approaches exist at present. Surface plasmon polaritons2,3 are among the most promising candidates for subwavelength optical confinement3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. However, studies of long-range surface plasmon polaritons have only demonstrated optical confinement comparable to that of conventional dielectric waveguides, because of practical issues including optical losses and stringent fabrication demands3,11,12,13. Here, we propose a new approach that integrates dielectric waveguiding with plasmonics. The hybrid optical waveguide consists of a dielectric nanowire separated from a metal surface by a nanoscale dielectric gap. The coupling between the plasmonic and waveguide modes across the gap enables ‘capacitor-like’ energy storage that allows effective subwavelength transmission in non-metallic regions. In this way, surface plasmon polaritons can travel over large distances (40–150 µm) with strong mode confinement (ranging from λ2/400 to λ2/40). This approach is fully compatible with semiconductor fabrication techniques and could lead to truly nanoscale semiconductor-based plasmonics and photonics.
